If the climate control system is operating in cooling mode , air flows
p rima rily from th e outlets in the center console and in the door
pillars . T o ach ieve adequa te cooling, you should never close the
ou tle ts completely. •
Using climate controls economically
Using the climate controls prudently can help save fuel.
When you use the a ir conditioner, e ngine power is reduced
and fuel consumption increa ses. To save fu el, you should use
the air co nditioner o nly when necessary. Also please note the
following points :
If you want to save fuel , activate ECON .
If you are going to drive with the wi ndows open, use ECO N.
~ For the sake of the environment
By reducing t he amount of fuel you use, you also reduce the amou nt
of pollutants emitted into the air .•

Solar blower fan /solar roof
With sufficient sunlight, the blower fan continues to
operate with solar energy to bring in fresh air after the
ignition has been switched off

T he windsh ield defogger works only when the engine is runn ing . T he
ind icator light in the button illum inates when the windshield
defogger is turned on.
With a cold engine at outside temperatures below 41 °F (+5 °C) and i n
( AU TO] operation, the windshield defogger turns on automati­
cally . Depend ing o n outside temperat ure, the w indshie ld is heated
for a maximum of 4 m inutes. The temperature for the climate control
must be selected so tha t it is ope ra ting in the heat ing mode . .,_

Controls
This overview is to assist you in familiarizing yourself with
the air conditioning controls.

The left side of the display shows the temperature selected for the
rear passenger on the left, the right side shows the temperature
selected for the rear passenger on the right .
If the air conditioning
sett ings are changed, th is appea rs briefly in the cor respond ing a rea
of the display.
Functions a re t urned on and off by touching the buttons. The LED in
the switch illuminates when the function is turned on .
By pressing the
safety s wit ch ® in the driver's door~ page 54 the
climate contro ls in the rear are deactivated. The message
PASSIVE
appears in the display. In this mode the rear climate control can only
be operated by the driver th rough the controls in the front compa rt­
ment.
ION/OFF I Tu rning on and off
The air conditioning can be turned on and off by pressing the
I ON/OFF I button. W it h the ignition Off, the residua l heat funct ion
can be activated by pressing the button. The residual heat from the coolant can
be used to heat the vehicle interior. The residual heat
function is turned off a utomatically after 30 minu tes.
Set ting the temperature
Temperat ure c an be adjusted over a range from 64 ° F (+18 °C) to 80

® Air distribution
You can adjust the air circulation so that air flows from specific vents.
• In the
I !setting, all the air flows from the vents in the center
conso le and the out lets in the door pillars.
• In the
-0 setti ng, a ir f lows from the ou tlets u nder the front seats.
• In the~ setting, air flows from outlets in the center console and
t he door pilla rs as we ll as from the outlets under the front seats.
To regulate air distribution automatically, switc h to
[AUTO] .
~ Heated se a ts *
In position O the heating for the seats is turned off. The range of
adjustment is from 1 to 6.
The seats can be pre-heated for about 10 minutes using the heat ing .
However, the heating is turned off if the seat sensors do not detect
the weight of an occupant during th is period .
l'tJ] Ventilated sea ts*
The seat cushion and the seat back surfaces of the front seats can be
ventila ted. In pos it ion O the sea t ventilation is t urned off . The range
of adjustment is from 1 to 6.
!AU TO I Automatic operation
Air temperature, volume of air and air distribution are automatically
reg ulated to ach ieve or ma inta in t he desired temperatures as qu ickly
as possible . •

Electromechanical parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces the hand
brake.

- Pull the switch to apply the parking brake~ fig. 135. The
indicator light in the switch will come on.
- Step on the brake pedal or the accelerator pedal and press
the switch at the same time to release the parking brake.
The indicator light in the switch will go out.
Your vehicle is equipped with an electromechanical parking brake
which replaces the handbrake. The parking brake is designed to
prevent the vehicle from rolling unintentionally.
In addition to the normal functions of a traditional hand brake, the
electromechanical parking brake provides various convenience and
safety functions.
Emergency brake
An emergency brake ensures that the vehicle can be slowed even if
the normal brakes fail~ page 125, "Emergency braking".

If the parking brake is applied with the ignition turned on, the
indicator light in the instrument cluster (U.S. models:=.., Canadian
models: ©) and in the switch

• If the parking brake is applied with the ignition turned off, the
indicator light in the instrument cluster (U.S. models:=., Canadian
models: ©) and in the switch
«fl) will come on for about 30 seconds
and then go out.
& WARNING
If the vehicle is stationary and the transmission is engaged with
the engine running, the engine should not be speeded up (e.g.
manually from under the hood). Otherwise the vehicle will start to
move -you run the risk of an accident.
0 Note
If the warning/indicator light (U.S . models: BRAKE, Canadian models:
«I» ) flashes in the instrument cluster, there is a brake system
malfunction . By pressing the [CHECK! button, you can bring up a
driver message which explains the malfunction in more detail. If the
message

a parking brake malfunction which you should have repaired immedi­
ately by an authorized dealership~ page 28.
[ i] Tips
• You can apply the parking brake at any time -even with the igni­
tion turned off . The ignition must be turned on in order to release the
parking brake.
• Occasional noises when the parking brake is applied and released
are normal and are not a cause for concern.
• The parking brake goes through a self-test cycle at regular inter­
vals -when the vehicle is parked. Any associated noises are normal. •

Steering wheel with tiptronic ®
The shift buttons on the steering wheel allow the driver to
shift gears manually.

The shift b uttons are activated when the selector lever is in D, Sor in
the manual shi ft program (tiptronic) .
Of course, you can continue to use the manual shift program with the
selector lever on the center console .•
Fail-safe mode
If tiptronic® suffers a malfunction, the foil-safe mode
maintains minimum driveobility .
In the event of particular system malfunctions, the automatic trans­
mission switches to the fail-safe mode. This is signalled by all the
segments in the display illuminating or going out.
You can continue to move the selector lever to all positions . The
man ual shift prog ram (tiptronic) is switched off in the fail-safe mode.

m en t Vehicle
OP-eration
In selector lever positions D and Sand in the manual shift program,
the t ransm ission remains in 3rd gea r if 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear was
engaged previously. The transm ission remains in 5th gear, if 4th, 5th
or 6th gear was engaged previously.
T he next time you dr ive off or start the engine, 3rd gear is engaged.
You can cont inue to use reverse gear . But the electronic lockout for
reve rse gear is turned off.
0 Note
If the transmission switches to fail -safe mode, you should take the
vehicle to an authorized Audi dealership as soon as possible to have
the cond ition corrected .•

In the case of Advan ced Parking Sys tem with rear view camera, the
visual display is installed in combination with the front and back
acoustic parking assist and the re ar-view camera .
The rear-vi ew camera is located in the rear lid=> fig. 176 and assists
the driver when parking in reverse . The picture from the rear-view
camera on the MMI display shows a m irror v iew of a sect ion of the
area behind the vehicle=>
page 165, fig . 182.

The visual image or rear-view camera picture is available as soon as
the MM I display o r the MMI is switched on or the start-up phase is
completed .•

The acoustic parking assist gives an acoustic and visual

Activation of the acoustic parking system is confirmed by
a brief acknowledgement sound. The indicator light in the
switch lights up.
Deactivation
- If you drive forwards faster than approx. 6 mph (10 km/h), or
- if you switch the ignition off, the entire acoustic parking
assist is automatically deactivated, or
- you can press the switch
Pw! in the center console
=:, page 161, fig. 177 to deactivate the Audi parking
system. The indicator light in the switch goes out.
You have to turn on the acoustic parking assist manually if you wish
to park the vehicle forwards or if you wish to approach an obstacle
forwards and want a distance warning.
The range at which the sensors start to measure is

Distance warning is given by chimes which are generated by a signal
generator . The volume and the pitch of the chimes can be adjusted in
the MMI =>
page 171.
Mute
In the case of vehicles with automatic transmission, an acoustic
distance warning is discontinued when the transmission selector lever is moved to the P position
. However, the system remains active.
As soon as the selector lever is moved from the
P position and the
vehicle approaches an obstacle, the acoustic distance warning
resumes.
Driving forward/backward
Distance warning when driving forward/backward is based on detec­
tion of an obstacle in the range of the parking assist . As the distance
decreases, the time interval between the audible tones becomes
shorter.
When the distance is less than approx. 1 ft (0.30 m), the tone
becomes continuous. At this point you should stop backing up or
driving forward .
If the distance to an obstacle remains the same, the volume of the
distance warning is gradually reduced after about
4 seconds (does
not apply to the zone for the continuous tone). If you start to
approach the detected obstacle again, the distance warning will
sound at the normal volume again.
Parking
When you select another gear when parking (e.g. reverse/forward),
the warning tones are temporarily suppressed, but the visual display
remains on the MMI display. If you start approaching a detected
obstacle again, the distance warning will sound at the normal volume
again.
Visual display
The segments on the MMI display indicate a change in the distance
between the vehicle and an obstacle . The number of segments
displayed depends on the obstacles in front of or behind the vehicle.
The closer the vehicle comes to the obstacle, the closer the segments
approach the vehicle=>
page 161, fig. 178. When the segment
before last is displayed, the vehicle has reached the collision zone. At
this point you should stop backing up or driving forward=>& .
The image in the visual display can be switched off on the MMI display
=>
page 173 . The acoustic distance warning remains active. .,,

same performance characteristics as the components or iginally
installed on your veh icle.
• Never u se tir e-rim combinations that have not been approved
by Audi.

Item s stored be tween the safety belt buckl e and the center
console can cause the sensors in the buckle to send the wrong
information to the ele ctroni c control module and prevent the
Advanced Airbag System from w orking properl y.
• Always make sure that nothing can interfere with the safety
belt buckles and that they a re not obstru cted .

passenger's knees and upper and lower thigh areas as a s upplement

Notice about data recorded by
vehicle control modules
Your vehicle is not equipped with an Event Data Recorder (EDR),
installed by some manufacturers for the express purpose of
capturing data for retrieva l after an accident or crash event. ED R's are
sometimes called "crash recorders".
Some state laws restrict the retrieval or downloading of data stored
by ED R's that were installed in a vehicle for the express purpose of
retrieving data after an accident or crash event without the owner's
consent.
Although your vehicle is not equipped with an EDR, it is equipped w ith
a number of electronic control modu les for various vehicle systems
such as, for example, engine function, emission control, as well as for
the airbags and safety belts.
T hese electronic contro l modules also record vehicle-re lated data
during normal vehicle operation for diagnostic and repair purposes .
Th e recording capacity of the e lectronic control modu les is limited to
data (no sound is recorded) and only a sma ll amount of data is actu­
ally recorded over a very limited period of time and stored when a
system fault or other condition is sensed by a control unit. Some of
the data then stored may relate to vehicle speed, direction, braking
as well as restraint system use and performance in the event of a
crash or other condition. Stored data can only be read and down­
loaded with special equipment.
Electronic Stabilization Program
(ESP)

The ESP improves the vehicle stability.

ESP is des igned to help you maintain vehicle control in s ituations
where the car approaches the limits of "grip", especia lly when accel­
erat ing and cornering. ESP reduces the risk of skidd ing and imp roves
stability under all road conditions.
Th e system operates across the entire speed range in combination
with the ABS system. If the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) malfunc­
tions, the ESP will also shut down.
How the system works
The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL)
and the Anti-Slip Regulation System (ASR) are integrated in the elec­
tronic stabilizatio n pro gram. In addition to the data provided by
these funct ions, the ESP control unit requires additional measure­
ment data provided by high performance sensors. The rotational
