-If you use the power locking switch with
the doors closed, remember that all the
vehicle doors will lock.
- Locked doors make it more difficult for
emergency workers to get into the vehi­
cle, which puts lives at risk. Do not leave
anyone behind in the vehicle, especially
children.
Emergency locking
If the power locking system fails (power fail­ ure), you will need to lock the passenger door
separately.

For this purpose, a mechan ica l locking device
i s provided on the end panel of the passenger
door (only visible when the door is open) .
• Remove the cap

• Insert the key into the inner slot and turn it
to the right as far as it can go .
After you close the door you w ill no longer be
able to open it from the outside . You can open
it from the inside, however, by pulling on the
door latch tw ice.

- Persons taller than 4'11" (1.5 m) as
well as children in booster seats who
a re too close to the rea r window and
r oof can suffer severe head and neck in­
juries when the rea r lid is closed or in a
crash.

- The minimum clearance between the
passengers ' heads and the rear window
must never -under any circumstances -
be less than 1 inch (2 .5 cm) when the
passengers sit fully upr ight.
- Always make sure that rear seat pas­
sengers cannot be struck when the rear
l id is closed .
- After closing the rear lid, always pull up
on it to make sure that it is prope rly
closed . Othe rw ise it could open sudden ly
when the veh icle is moving .
- To help prevent po isonous exha ust gas
from being d rawn into the vehicle, al­
ways keep the rea r lid closed while dr iv­
ing. Never transport objec ts larger t han
those which fit completely in to the lug ­
gage area, because then the rear lid can­
not be fully closed.
- Never leave you r vehicle u nattended es ­
pecially with the rea r lid left open . A
child could crawl into the car through the
luggage compartment and pull the lid
shut, becom ing trapped and unab le to
get out . To reduce t he risk of persona l in­
jury, never let ch ildren play in or around
yo ur vehicle . A lways ke ep the rear lid as
we ll as the veh icle doo rs closed when not
in use.

- If the rear lid is open or not properly
l ocked when th e ignition is turned on,
the door and rea r lid war ning appea rs in
the i nstr ument cluster disp lay.
- If the rear lid on a loc ked veh icle is un­
l ocked wi th the m iddle b utton
e:5 on the
r emo te key, t he rear lid is automatically
l ocked again immediately after clos ing.
This is indicated by the t urn signa ls
blinking.
Emergency release for rear lid
I f the rea r lid cannot be opened, an emergen­
cy release is provided .

General recommen­
dations
Why is your seat adjustment so
important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can
only provide maximum protection if the front
seats are correctly adjusted.
There are various ways of adjust ing the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger . Adjust
your seat properly so that :
- you can easily and quick ly reach all the
switches and controls in the instrument
panel
-your body is prope rly supported thus reduc­
ing physical stress and fatigue
- the safety be lts and airbag system can offer
maximum protection
¢ page 108 .
In the following sec tions, you will see exactly
how you can best adjust you r seats .
There are special regulations and instructions
for insta lling a child safety seat on the front
passenger's seat. Always heed the informa­
tion rega rd ing child safety provided in
~ page 130, Child Safety.
A WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the driver and
all other passengers can result in serious
personal in jury.
- Always keep your feet on the floor when
the vehicle is in motion -never p ut your
feet on top of the instrument panel, out
of the w indow or on top of the seat cush­
ion! This applies espec ially to the passen­
gers .
If your seating position is incorrect
yo u increase the r isk of injury in the case
of sudden braking or an acc ident.
If the
airbag infla tes and the seating position
is incorrect this could result in personal
injury or even death.
- It is import ant for bo th the driver and
front passenger to keep a distance of at least 10 inches (25 cm) between them­
selves and the steering wheel and/or in­
strument panel. If you're s itting any
closer than th is, the a irbag system can­
not protect you properly . In addition to
this, the front seats and head restra ints
must be adjusted to your body height so
that they can give you max imum protec­
tion.
- Always try to keep as much distance as
possible between yourself and the s teer­
ing wheel or instrument pane l.
- Do not adjust the driver's o r fron t pa s­
senger's seat whi le the vehicle is moving.
Your seat may move unexpected ly, caus ­
ing sudden loss of vehicle contro l and
personal injury . If you ad just yo ur seat
while the veh icle is moving, you are out
of posit ion.
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving.
We recommend that you adjust the driver's
seat in the fo llowing manner:
.,. Adjust the seat in fore and aft direction so
t ha t you can easily p ush the peda ls to the
floor wh ile keeping your knee slightly bent

.,. Adjust the seatback so that when you sit
w ith your back against the seatback, you can
still grasp the top of the steering wheel.
.,. Posit ion the head restraint accord ing to the
occupant 's height~

s t raint shou ld be a t least at eye level, pref ­
erably higher and idea lly level with the top
of the head

A WARNING "--
Never place any objects in the dr iver's foot-
well. An object could get into the pedal
area and interfere with pedal function. In
case of sudden braking or an acc ident, you
would not be able to brake or accelerate!

A WARNING
-Never adjust the driver's or front passen­
ger seat while the vehicle is moving. If
you do this while the vehicle is moving,
you will be out of posit ion. Always adjust
the driver's or front passenger seat when
the vehicle is not moving.
- Be careful when adjusting the seat
height. Check to see that no one is in the
way, or serious injury could result!
- Beca use the seats can be electrically ad­
justed wi th the ign it ion key removed,
never leave children unattended in the
vehicle. Unsupervised use of the e lectric
seat adj ustments may cause serious in­
jury.
- To reduce the r isk of injury in the case of
sudden braking or accident, front pas­
sengers must never ride in a moving ve­ hicle with the seatback recl ined. Safety
belts and the airbag system offer maxi­
mum p rotection only when the seatback
is upright and the safety be lts a re prop­
erly posit ioned on the body. The more
the seatback is recl ined, the greate r the
risk of personal injury from an inco rrec t
seating position and improperly posi­
t ioned safety be lts!
- Always make sure the front seatbac ks are
in the upright position and securely
locked in place when driving.

The head restraints must be adjusted proper­
ly to provide protection.

The head restraints on the front seats can be
adjusted to provide safe support to head and
neck at the optimum height . When optimally
adjusted , the top of the rest raint should be
level with the top of the head

General information
Safe transportation of passengers on the rear
seats requires proper safety precautions .

A ll passengers on the rear seats must be sea t­
ed in compliance w ith the sa fety guidelines
explained in
c::> page 100 and c::> page 108.
The correct seating position is critical for the

A WARNING

- Occupants in the front and rear seats
must always be properly restrained.
- Persons taller than 4 feet 11 inches
(1. 50 m) must never sit in the rear seat
area . The rear passenger compartment is
too small for passenger taller than 4 feet 11 inches
(1. 50 m).
- The minimum clearance between the
passenge rs' heads and the rear window
must never, under any circumstances, be
less than 1 inc h (2.5 cm) with the pas­
sengers sit ting fully upright. Ta ller per­
sons, as well as children on booster seats
who are too close to the rear window, can suffer severe head and neck injuries

occurs. Always make sure that rear seat

rear lid is closed .
- When the rear backrest is folded down
do not allow passengers to occupy the
load surface available while the vehicle is
in motion. Vehicle occupa nts must al­
ways be properly restrained. -
Never store any heavy, hard objects on
the rear lid cover. This can be hazardous
for rear seat occupants if the rear lid is
opened or if the vehicle is braked sud­
denly or in the event of a crash .
- Loose items inside the passenger com­
partment, can fly forward in a crash or
sudden maneuver and injure occupants .
Always sto re a rticles in the luggage com­
pa rtment and use the faste ning eyes, es­
pecia lly when the rea r seatbacks have
been fo lded down.
- Read and heed all WARN INGS

Rear window shelf '
You can place light articles of clothing on the
rear window shelf behind the seatback .
A WARNING ~ -
Whenever you are driving, do not leave any
hard objects on the rear window shelf or
a llow your pet to sit on the she lf. These
could become a hazard for veh icle occu­
pants in the event of sudden brak ing or a
crash!
(i) Tips
- A vent slot is located between the shelf
and the rear w indow. Do not block the
vent with any items you may place on the
rear window she lf.
- Do not place bu lky items on the rear win­
dow shelf as they wou ld restr ict or block
the driver's vision t hrough the rear view
m irror .

about 200 lbs (90 kg). One can easi ly imagine
the injuries that an item of that weight flying
freely through the passenger compartment can cause in a co llision at a speed considered
relative ly low .
A WARNING
Weak, damaged or improper straps used
to secure items to t ie-downs can fail du r­
ing hard b rak ing or in a col lision and cause
ser ious personal inju ry.
- Always use suitable mounting straps and
properly secure i tems to the tie-downs in
the luggage compar tment to help pre­
vent items from shifting or flying for­
wa rd as dangerous missiles .
- When the rear seat back rest is folded
down, always use su itab le mount ing
st raps and proper ly secure items to the
t ie-downs in the luggage compartment
to help prevent items from flying for­
ward as dangerous miss iles into the pas­
senger compartment.
- Never attach a child safety seat tether strap to a tie-down.

crash, a heavy object on the cover could fly
fo rward and injure any passen gers.
Roof rack
First things first
A roof rack can be fitted to carry additional
luggage on the roof
• Always read and follow the instructions pro­
vided by the roof rack man ufacturer when
the roof rack sys tem must be installed.
If you are transporting luggage or other ob ­
jects on the roof, p lease note the fo llowing:
- Yo ur vehicle has spec ially designed aerody-
namic roof rails . On ly install a roof rack spe­
cifically designed for your model. Contact
the nearest Aud i dealer for information on
approved modul ar roo f racks for your vehi­
cle .
- T hese approved roof racks are the basis for a
comp lete roof rack system . Additional at ­
tachments for the basic roof rack are neces­ sary to safely tran spo rt luggage, bicycles,
surf boards, skis or small boats. All necessa­ ry hardwar e fo r these syst ems is available at
your authorized A udi dealer.
- We recommend that you keep the installa­
tion instruct ions for your roof rac k system
together w ith your Owner's literatu re i n t he
veh icle. .,.

A WARNING
The outlet p lus any appliances plugged in­
to it rema in functional even if the ignition
is switched off or the ignition key is re­
moved. N ever leave children inside the ve­
hicle withou t supe rv ision.

When the engine is off and accessor ies are
still plugged in and are on, the vehicle bat­
tery ca n still be dra ined .
Storage
General
A WARNING
-Always remove objec ts from the instru­
ment panel. Any items not put away
cou ld slide around inside the vehicle
wh ile driving or when acce lerating or
when applying the brakes or when driv­
ing around a corner.
- When you are drivi ng make sure tha t
anything you may have placed in the cen­
ter console or other storage lo cations
cannot fa ll out into the footwells . In case
of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake, depress th e clutch or acceler­
ate.
-Any articles of cloth ing that you have
hung up must not interfere with the driv­
er's v iew. The coat hooks are desig ned
only for lightweight clothing. Never hang
any clothing with ha rd, po inted or heavy
objects in the pocke ts on the coat hooks.
Dur ing sudden braking or in an acciden t -
especially if the airbag is deployed -
-
these objects co uld injure any passen­
gers inside the vehicle.
Glove compartment
The glove compartment is illuminated and
can be locked.

Please remember -safety first!
This chapter contains important information,
tips, instructions and warnings that you need
to read and observe for your own safety, the
safety of your passengers and others . We have
summarized here what you need to know
about safety belts, a irbags, ch ild restra ints as
well as child safety. Your safety is for us
priori­
ty number 1.
Always observe the info rmat ion
and warn ings in th is sect ion -fo r yo ur own
safety as well as for that of your passengers.
The information in this se ction app lies to all
model ve rsions of your veh icle . Some of the
feat ures desc ribed in this sec tions may be
standard equipment on some models, or may
be optional equipment on others . If you are
not sure, ask your authorized Aud i dealer.
A WARNING
- Make certain that you follow the instruc­
t ions and heed the WARNINGS in this
Manual. It is in your interest and in the
interest of your passengers .
- Always keep the complete Owner's Liter­
ature in your Audi when you lend or sell
yo ur vehicle so that this important info r­
mation will a lways be ava ilable to the
dr iver and passenge rs.
- Always keep the Owner's literature handy
so that you can find i t eas ily if you have

Safety equipment
The safety features are part of the occupant
restraint system and work together to help
redu ce the risk of injury in a wide variety of
accident situations.
Your safety and the safety of your passenge rs
should not be left to chance. Advances in
technology have made a varie ty o f fea tures
avai la bl e to he lp re duce the risk of injury in an accident
. The following is a lis ting o f just a
few of the safety features in your Audi:
- sophis tic ated s afety be lts fo r drive r and a ll
passenger sea ting pos it ions,
- safety belt pre-tensione rs,
- fro nt airbags,
- knee airbags for the front seats,
- side airbags in the front seats,
- LATCH anchorages for child restraints,
- ad justab le steering column .
T hese ind iv idual safety features can wor k to­
ge ther as a sys tem to he lp p rotec t you and
you r passengers in a wide range of accidents.
These features cannot wo rk as a system if
they are not always p roper ly adjusted and
properly used!

Important things to do before driving
Safety is everybody's job! Vehicle and occu­
pant safety always depends on the informed and careful driver.
For yo ur safety and the safety of you r passen­
gers,
befor e driving alwa ys:
"' Make su re that all lig hts and signa ls a re op­
erati ng correctly .
"' Ma ke s ure that the ti re p ressu re is co rrec t.
"' Mak e s ure th at all windows are clean and
afford good v is ibility to the o utside .

• Always keep both feet in the footwell so
that you are in control of the vehicle at all
times.
For detailed information on how to adjust the
driver's seat, see
c::> page 55.
A WARNING
Drivers who are unbelted, out of position
or too close to the airbag can be seriously
injured by an airbag as it deploys. To help
reduce the risk of serious personal injury:
- Always adjust the driver's seat and the
steering wheel so that there are at least
10 inches (25 cm) between your breast­
bone and the steering wheel.
- Always adjust the driver's seat and the
steering wheel so that there are at least
4 inches (10 cm) between the knees and
the lower part of the instrument panel.
- Always hold the steering wheel on the
outside of the steering wheel rim with
your hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions to help reduce the risk of per­
sonal injury if the driver's airbag inflates.
- Never hold the steering wheel at the
12 o'clock position or with your hands at
other positions inside the steering wheel
rim or on the steering wheel hub. Hold­
ing the steering wheel the wrong way
can cause serious injuries to the hands,
arms and head if the driver's airbag in­
flates
- Pointing the steering wheel toward your
face decreases the ability of the supple­
mental driver's airbag to protect you in a
collision.
- Always sit in an upright position and nev­
er lean against or place any part of your
body too close to the area where the air­
bags are located.
- Before driving, always adjust the front
seats and head restraints properly and
make sure that all passengers are prop­
erly restrained.
- Never adjust the seats while the vehicle
is moving. Your seat may move unexpect- edly and you could lose control of the ve­
hicle .
- Never drive with the backrest reclined or
tilted far back! The farther the backrests
are tilted back, the greater the risk of in­
jury due to incorrect positioning of the safety belt and improper seating posi ­
tion .
- Children must always ride in child seats

when installing a child seat on the front passenger seat¢
page 108.
Proper seating position for the front
passenger
The proper front passenger seating position
is important for safe, relaxed driving .
For your own safety and to reduce the risk of
injury in the event of an accident, we recom­
mend that you adjust the seat for the front
passenger to the following position :
• Adjust the angle of the seatback so that it is
in an upright position and your back comes in full contact with it whenever the vehicle is
moving.
• Adjust the head restraint so that the upper
edge is as even with the top of your head as
possible but not lower than eye level and so
