34 Opening and closing
Power locking system
General description
The power locking system locks or unlocks all
doors simultaneously.
The power lock ing system in your ve hicle in­
corporates the fo llow ing funct ions:
- Central locking function
- Remote con tro l feature q page 33 .
- Anti -Theft Alarm Sys tem q page 38.
A ll the doors and the rear lid are locked by the
centra l locking system when you lock the vehi­
cle.
The unlocking a nd lock ing mode * can be
changed in t he d river i nfo rmation system
qpage24.
Unlocking the vehicle
You can un lock the vehicle from outs ide e ither
by using the remote control
or by insert ing
a nd turning the key in t he driver's door lock.
When you
unlock your veh icle:
- The anti-theft alarm system is deactivated br iefly.
- The veh icle inter ior lights ill uminate for ap­
proximate ly 30 seconds.
- All turn signa l lights will f lash twice w hen
the car is unlocked.
- After unlock ing the vehicle, yo u have 30 sec­
onds to open a door or the rear lid. After 30
seconds, the vehicle automatically locks and
the ant i-theft a larm system activates again.
The rear lid can be locked or un locked either
by using the remote control
or by insert ing
a nd turning the key in the driver's door lock.
Unlock ing the ve hicle w ith the remote co ntrol
c::::5 will only unlock the rear lid, to open it, the
lid handle needs to be p ressed .
Locking the vehicle
You can lock the vehicle from o utside e ither by
using the remote control
or by insert ing and
turning the key in the drivers's door lock.
When you
lo ck the vehicle:
- All doors and the rear lid are locked. -
All turn signal lights wi ll flash once when
the car is loc ked .
- The ant i-theft a larm system is ac tiva ted.
The ho rn of the anti -theft alarm system wi ll
sound and t he anti-theft a la rm system read­
iness light, located in the center of the in­
strument panel be low the w indshield on the
r ight side of the air vent, will start to blink.
- The vehicle interior lights turn off.
Automat ic lock ing*
T he au tom atic locking fea ture locks a ll the ve­
hicle doors an d the rear lid when you drive
faster than 9 m ph (15 km/h).
You can unlock t he vehi cle from the i nside by:
- remov ing the key from the igni tion swi tc h
(the vehi cle w ill automatically u nlock itself)
or
- pressi ng the un loc k pa rt of the power lock
sw itch
ll:D or
pull ing the door ha ndle (to open the doo r).
If you wish, yo u can have an a utho rized Aud i
dealer convert your power doo r lock system to
automat ic locking.

cl osed. In this way yo u avoid locking yourse lf
o ut accidentally .
_& WARNING
- When you loc k yo ur vehicle from o utside,
nobody- espec ia lly children -shou ld re­
main inside the vehicle. Remember,
when yo u lock the vehicle from the out­
side th e wi ndows cannot be o pened from
the inside.
- Wh en you leav e th e ve hicle, always re ­
move the ign ition key and take it w ith
you. This will preven t passe ngers (chil­
d ren, f or example) from acci denta lly be­
i n g loc ke d in the vehicle s hould they

instrument cluster illuminates when the
high beams are on.
- The
headlight flasher works only as long as
yo u hold the lever -even if there are no
l ights turned on . The indicator light
El in
the instrument cluster illuminates when you
use the headlight flasher.
A WARNING
Do not use the hig h beam or headlight
flasher if you know that these could blind
oncoming traffic.
Emergency flasher
The emergency flasher makes other motorists
aware that you or your vehicle are in an emer­
gency situation.

eme rgency flasher on or off.
When the emergency flashe r is on, all four
turn signals blink a t the same time. The tu rn
signa l indicator lights
BB in the ins trument
cluster, as we ll as the light in the emergency
f lasher switch ~ blink likewise. The emergen­
cy flashers also work when the ignition is
turned off.
The emergency flasher will automatica lly
switch on if you are in an acc ident where the
airbag has deployed.
@ Tips
You shou ld switch on the emergency flash­
er when: Clear vi
sion 45
- you are the last vehicle standing in a tra f­
fic jam so that any other vehicles coming
can see you, or when
- your vehicle has broken down or you are
in an emergency s ituation, or when
- your vehicle is be ing towed by a tow
truck or if you are towing another vehicle
behind you.
Interior Lights
Interior lights
The interior lights include the reading lights
for the driver and the front passenger.

Activating door contact circuit

Front reading lights "<~
.,.. Press one of the switches ® to turn the
r ight or left reading light on or off.
With the door contact circuit, the inter ior
lights turn on as soon as you unlock the vehi­
cle or open the doors. The interior lights are
also t urned on when the ignition key is re­
moved. The lights turn off about 30 seconds
after the doors are closed. When the veh icle is
locked or when the ignition is turned on, the
interior lights are turned off.
When a door is open, the interior lights are
turned off after about 10 minutes to prevent battery dra ining.

This reduces energy consumption and main­
tains starting capability over a longer period

page 156. Some of the convenience func­
tions may not operate, such as the interior
lights or power seat adjustment. The conven­
ience functions will be ava ilable again when
you switch on the ignition and start the en­
g ine .
Winte r oper ati on
During the winter months, battery capacity
tends to decrease as temperatures drop. This
i s because more power is also consumed while
start ing, and the headlights, rear window de­
fogger, etc., are used more often .
Avoid unnecessary power consumption, par­
ticularly in city traffic or when traveling only
short distances . Let your authorized Audi
dealer check the capac ity of the vehicle bat­
tery before winte r sets inc::>

charged ba tte ry w ill no t only prevent starting
prob lems when the weathe r is cold, but will
a lso last longer .
Replacing battery
The new battery must have the same capaci­
ty, vo ltage ( 12 volts), amperage, cons truction
and p lug sealing, as the origina l ba tte ry. Spec­
if ications are listed on the batte ry housing.
Batteries specially developed by A udi fulfill
the maintenance, output, and safety require­
ments.
When insta lling the battery, make sure the ig ­
nition and all electrica l cons umers are switch­
ed off c::>

We recommen d that yo u use ma intenance­
free or
cy cle- re sis tant /leak-pr oof batteries
according to the standards TL 825 06 (from
April 2008) and VW 7 SO 73 (from Apri l
2010).
Replacing the batte ry should be carried by a
q ua lified workshop. P lease follow the instruc­
tions on the battery cover.

-All work on the battery requires techni­
cal know ledge. Please contact an Audi
dealership or another authorized fac ility
for questions about the battery - danger
of ac id burns and exp losion hazard!
- The battery must not be opened! Do not
try to change the battery 's liquid level,
otherwise detonating gas will escape
from the battery - explosion hazard!
- The AGM battery in the luggage com­
partment cannot leak, because the elec­
t ro lyte for this batte ry is abso rbed into a
special glass mat. This lea k-proof battery
must not be replace with a convent iona l
bat tery.
- Make su re the ventilation hose on t he
side of the ba ttery is connected, othe r­
w ise fumes or battery ac id can leak out.
- Batte ry holder and termin als always
have to be sec ured correc tly.
- Before all work on the batte ry follow the

192 .
@ For the sake of the environment
Because of the p rob lem of proper disposal
of a ba ttery, we recommend your author­
i zed Audi dealer change the bat tery fo r
you. Batteries contain sulfuric acid and l ead and must always be disposed of prop ­
erly in comp liance with a ll environmental
regulat ions. Disposing of vehicle batter ies
i mproperly is very dangerous to the envi­
ro nment. Make sure that the removed bat­
tery cannot overbalance, othe rwise sulfu­
r ic acid might escape!
@ Tips
If your vehicle is left standing for several
weeks at extremely low temperatures, the
vehicle battery shou ld be removed and
stored w here it w ill not freeze. This will
p revent it from be ing dam aged and h aving
to be replaced .

The discharged battery must be properly
connected to the vehicle's electrical sys­
tem.
Use of jumper cables
Make sure to connect the jumper coble
clomps in exactly the order described below!

The procedure described below for connecting
jumper cables is intended to provide a jump
start for your veh icle.
Preparatory measures
1. Do not jump start a frozen battery! Re­
place such a battery!
2 . Otherwise apply the hand brake and shift
in to idle gear if your veh icle has manua l
transmission , and put the selector lever
into P position if your vehicle has auto­
matic transm ission.
3. For both vehicles switch off all consumers
and the ignition.

Connecting/disconnecting the jumper
cable.
4. Connect one end of the red jumper cable
on the
jump start bolt (D c:> fig. 169
(Bolts under red cover= "positive") of the
vehicle to be started @.
5. Connect the other end of the red jumper
cable to the positive term inal @of the
booster battery @.
6. Connect one end of the black jumper ca­
ble to the negative terminal@ of the
booster battery @.
7. Connect the other end of the black jumper
cable to the negative terminal (bolt head)
@ in the external starting point @of
your vehicle.
8. Route the jumper cables so that they can­ not catch in any rotat ing parts in the en­
gine compartment .
Starting the engine
9. Start the engine of the vehicle providing
assistance and allow it to run at idle.
10. Now start the engine of the vehicle w ith
the d ischarged battery, wait for two to
three minutes until the engine "runs"
smoot hly.
11. If the engine does not start: Stop trying
after 10 seconds and then try again after
about 30 seconds.
12. In the vehicle that has received start as­
s istance, turn on the heater blower and
the rear window heating to eliminate any
voltage peaks when disconnecting. Driv­ ing lights must be switched off!
13. Disconnect the cable while the eng ine is
running exactly in
reverse order to that
described inc:>

When do­
ing so, make sure that the cable cannot
contact rotating engine parts.
14. C lose the cover on the positive terminal.
T he battery is vented to the outside to prevent
gases from entering the vehicle interior . Make
sure that the jumper clamps are well connect­
ed with their
metal ports in full contact with
the battery term inals.
