Brakingeffect
Theresponsetimefromthebrakesdependson
theweatherandenvironmentalconditions.To
ensuretheoptimumbrakingeffect,thebrake
systemiscleanedatregularintervals.Thisis
donebyapplyingthebrakepadstothebrakero-
torsforashortperiodoftimewhendrivingat
highspeedswhenthewindshieldwipersare
switchedon.
Ifthebrakesystembecomesdamp,forexample
afterdrivinginheavyrain,thebrakingeffectmay
bedelayed.Otherfactorsthatcouldtemporarily
increasetheresponsetimeofthebrakesinclude:
—Wetconditions
—Lowtemperatures,ice,andsnow
—Roadscoveredinsalt
—Dirtybrakepads
Corrosion
Corrosionmayformonthebrakerotorsifthereis
noheavybraking,ifthevehicleisnotdrivenfor
longperiodsoftime,orifthevehicleisnotdriv-
enfrequentlyorforlongdistances.Inthiscase,
brakingheavilyseveraltimeswhiledrivingat
highspeedscancleanthebrakerotors>A\.

Brakepads
Newbrakepadsdonotachievetheirfullbraking
effectduringthefirst250miles(400km).They
mustbe“brokenin”first.However,youcancom-
pensatefortheslightlyreducedbrakingforceby
pressingfirmlyonthebrakepedal.Avoidheavy
brakingduring thebreak-inperiod.
Brakepadweardependslargelyonthewaythe
vehicleisdrivenandonoperatingconditions.
Brakepadwearincreaseswhendrivingfrequently
inthecityorshortdistancesorwhenusingavery
sportydrivingstyle.
Ceramicbrakes
Appliesto:vehicleswithceramicbrakes
Ceramicbrakesprovideexcellentdeceleration
rates.
Thebreak-inperiodfornewceramicbrakesmay
besignificantlylongerthanforstandardbrake
rotors.Duetothepropertiesofthematerial,
theymaycausenoisesatlowerspeeds.Ceramic
brakesalsoabsorbmoremoistureinwetcondi-
tions.Therefore,therewilltemporarilybeless
brakingforcethanwhenthebrakesaredry.You
cancompensateforthisbypressingthebrake
pedalharder.

—Onlyapplythebrakesforthepurposeof
cleaningthebrakesystemwhenroadand
trafficconditionspermit.Youmustnoten-
dangerotherroadusersandincreasethe

vehiclethatisinvolvedinafrontalcollision.Even
atcityspeedsof20to30mph(30to50km/h),
theforces actingonthebodycanreachoneton
(2,000lbs,or1,000kg)ormore.Athigher
speeds,theseforcesareevengreater.
Peoplewhodonotusesafetybeltsarealsonot
attachedtotheirvehicle.Inafrontalcollision
theywillalsokeepmovingforwardatthespeed
theirvehiclewastravellingjustbeforethecrash.
Ofcourse,thelawsofphysicsdon'tjustapplyto
frontalcollisions,theydeterminewhathappens
inallkindsofaccidentsandcollisions.

ThefrontAdvancedAirbagSystemsupplements
thesafetybeltstoprovideadditionalprotection
forthedriver'sandfrontpassenger'sheadsand
upperbodiesinfrontalcrashes.Theairbagsin-
flateonlyinfrontalimpactswhenthevehiclede-
celerationishighenough.
ThefrontAdvancedAirbagSystemforthefront
seatoccupantsisnotasubstituteforyoursafety
belts.Rather,it ispartoftheoveralloccupantre-
straintsysteminyourvehicle.Alwaysremember
thattheairbagsystemcanonlyhelptoprotect
you,ifyouaresittingupright,wearingyoursafe-
tybeltandwearingitproperly.Thisiswhyyou
and
yourpassengersmustalwaysbeproperlyre-
strained,notjustbecausethelawrequiresyouto
be.
TheAdvancedAirbagSysteminyourvehiclehas
beencertifiedtomeetthe“lowrisk”require-
mentsfor3and6year-oldchildrenonthepas-
sengersideandverysmalladultsonthedriver
side.Thelowriskdeploymentcriteriaare intend-
edtohelpreducetheriskofinjurythroughinter-
actionwiththefrontairbagthatcanoccur,for
example,bybeingtooclosetothesteeringwheel
andinstrumentpanelwhentheairbaginflates.
Inaddition,thesystemhasbeencertifiedto
complywiththe“suppression”requirementsof
theSafetyStandard,toturnoffthefrontairbag
forinfants12monthsoldandyoungerwhoare
restrainedonthefrontpassengerseatinchildre-
straintsthatarelistedintheStandard
=>page214,ChildrestraintsandAdvancedfront
airbagsystem.

electricalcapacitanceonthefrontpassengerseat
thatrequiresthefrontairbagtobeturnedoff.If
thePASSENGERAIRBAGOFF#;lightdoesnot
comeon,thefrontairbagonthepassengerside
has notbeenturnedoffby thecontrolunitand
candeployifthecontrolunitsenses animpact
thatmeetstheconditionsstoredinitsmemory.
Ifthetotalelectricalcapacitanceregisteredon
thefrontpassengerseatismorethanthatofa
typical1year-old,butlessthantheweightofa
smalladult,thefrontairbagonthepassenger
sidemaydeploy(thePASSENGERAIRBAGOFF
#;lightdoesnotcomeon).
Forexample,theairbagmaydeployif:
—asmallchildthatisheavierthanatypical1
year-oldchildisonthefrontpassengerseat(re-
gardlessofwhetherthechildisinoneofthe

ortelephonemountingstothesurfacescov-
eringtheairbagunits.
—Forcleaningthehornpadorinstrument
panel,useonlyasoft,dryclothoronemois-
tenedwithplainwater.Solventsorcleaners
coulddamagetheairbagcoverorchange
thestiffnessorstrengthofthematerial so
that
theairbagcannotdeployandprotect
properly.
—Neverrepair,adjust,orchangeanypartsof
theairbagsystem.
—Allworkonthesteeringwheel,instrument
panel,front seatsorelectricalsystem(in-
cludingtheinstallationofaudioequipment,
cellulartelephonesandCBradios,etc.)
mustbeperformedbyaqualifiedtechnician
whohasthetraining andspecialequipment
necessary.
—Foranyworkontheairbagsystem,we
stronglyrecommendthatyouseeyourau-
thorizedAudidealerorqualifiedworkshop.
—Nevermodifythefrontbumperorpartsof
thevehiclebody.
—Alwaysmakesurethatthesideairbagcan
inflatewithoutinterference:
—Neverinstallseatcoversorreplacement

teranairbaghasbeendeployed,it mustbe
replacedwithnewreplacementpartsde-
signedandapprovedespeciallyforyourAudi

airbagsystemsorairbagcomponentsmust
beperformedbyqualifiedworkshopsonly.

—Forsafetyreasonsinsevereaccidents,the
alternatorandstarterareseparatedfrom
thevehiclebatterywithapyrotechniccircuit
interrupter.
—Workonthepyrotechniccircuitinterrupter
mustonlybeperformedbyaqualified
technicianswhohavetheexperience,in-
formationandspecialtoolsnecessaryto
performtheworksafely.
—Ifthevehicleorthecircuitinterrupteris
scrapped,allapplicablesafetyprecautions

OtherthingsthatcanaffectAdvanced
Airbagperformance
Changingthevehicle'ssuspensionsystemcan
changethewaythattheAdvancedAirbagSystem
performsinacrash.Forexample,usingtire-rim
combinationsnotapprovedbyAudi,loweringthe
vehicle,changingthestiffnessofthesuspension,
includingthesprings,suspensionstruts,shock
absorbersetc.canchangetheforcesthatare
measuredbytheairbagsensorsandsenttothe
electroniccontrolunit.Somesuspensionchanges
can,forexample,increasetheforcelevelsmeas-
uredbythesensorsandmaketheairbagsystem
deployincrashesinwhichitwouldnotdeployif
thechangeshadnotbeenmade.Otherkindsof
changesmayreducetheforcelevelsmeasuredby
thesensorsandpreventtheairbagfromdeploy-
ingwhenitshould.>

should becheckedmonthlywhencoldandinflat-
edtotheinflationpressurerecommendedbythe
vehiclemanufactureronthevehicleplacardor
tireinflationpressurelabel.(Ifyourvehiclehas
tiresofadifferentsizethanthesizeindicatedon
thevehicleplacardortireinflationpressurela-
bel,youshoulddeterminethepropertireinfla-
tionpressureforthosetires).
Asanaddedsafetyfeature,yourvehiclehasbeen
equippedwithatirepressuremonitoringsystem
(TPMS)thatilluminatesalowtirepressuretell-
talewhenoneormoreofyourtiresissignificant-
lyunder-inflated.Accordingly,whenthelowtire
pressuretelltaleilluminates,youshouldstopand
checkyourtiresassoonaspossible,andinflate
themtotheproperpressure.Drivingonasignifi-
cantlyunder-inflatedtirecausesthetiretoover-
heatandcanleadtotirefailure.Under-inflation
alsoreducesfuelefficiencyandtiretreadlife,
andmayaffectthevehicle'shandlingandstop-
pingability.
PleasenotethattheTPMSisnotasubstitutefor
propertiremaintenance,anditisthedriver'sre-
sponsibilitytomaintaincorrecttirepressure,
evenifunder-inflationhasnotreachedthelevel
totriggerillumination oftheTPMSlowtirepres-
suretelltale.
YourvehiclehasalsobeenequippedwithaTPMS
malfunctionindicatortoindicatewhenthesys-
temisnotoperatingproperly.TheTPMSmal-
functionindicatoriscombinedwiththelowtire
pressuretelltale.Whenthesystemdetectsa
malfunction,thetelltalewillflashforapproxi-
matelyone minuteandthenremaincontinuously
illuminated.Thissequencewillcontinueupon
subsequentvehiclestart-upsaslongasthe mal-
functionexists.
Whenthemalfunctionindicatorisilluminated,
thesystemmaynotbeabletodetectorsignal
lowtirepressureasintended.TPMSmalfunctions
mayoccurforavarietyofreasons,includingthe
installationofreplacementoralternatetiresor
wheelsonthevehiclethatpreventtheTPMS
fromfunctioningproperly.Alwayscheck the
TPMSmalfunctiontelltaleafterreplacingoneor
moretiresorwheelsonyourvehicletoensure
thatthereplacementoralternatetiresand
wheelsallowtheTPMStocontinuetofunction
properly.
