Children up to about 40 lbs (18 kg) are best protected in child safety
seats designed for their age and weigh t. Experts say that t he skel ­
eta l structure, part icularly the pelv is, of these ch ildren is not fully
developed, and they s hou ld not use the vehicle sa fe ty be lts
::::>fig .140 .
Children who weigh more than 40 lbs . (1 8 kg) may generally use the
available three point combinat ion lap and shou lder belts when t hey
sit on an appropriate booster seat. Be sure the booster seat meets
all applicable safety sta ndards .
Booster seats raise the seating position of the ch ild and reposition
both the lap and s hou lder par ts of t he safety belt so tha t they pass
across the c hild's body in the right places. The routing o f the belt
over the child's body is very important for the child 's p rotection.
This app lies whenever a ch ild uses the vehicle's safety bel ts, even
when the child is big enough to use them without a booster seat.
In a crash, air bags must inflate with in a blink o f an eye and with
considerable force . In order to do its job, the airbag needs room to
inf late so tha t it wi ll b e there to pr otec t th e occ up ant as the occu ­
pant moves forward into the airbag .
A vehic le occupant including a child who is out of position and too
close to the airbag ge ts in the way of an inflati ng airbag. When an
occupant is too close , he or she will be struck vio lent ly and will
receive serious or p ossi bly eve n fatal injury.
In order for the airbag to offer protect ion , it is important that all
veh ic le occupan ts, especia lly any c hild ren, who mu st be in the fron t
seat in exceptional circumstances , be properly restrained and as far
away from the airbag as possible. By keeping room between the
child's or othe r occupant's body and the front of the passenger
compartment, the airbag can inflate fully and comp letely and
provid e supp lemental pro tec tion in cer tain fro ntal crashes.
& WARNING
Not using a booster seat , using the booster seat improperly , incor ­
rectly installing a booster seat or using the vehicle s afety belt

improperly in creases the r isk of serious personal injur y and death
in a collision or other emergency situation . To help reduce the risk
of ser ious p ersonal injury and /or death :
• Alway s make sure to position the shoulder portion of the three­
point belt over the middle of child's shoulder .
• Never let the shoulder portion of the belt rest against or acro ss
the neck , face , chin , or throat of the child .
• Always make sure the lap belt portion of the three -point belt is
worn snug and passes as low as possible across the child's pelvis .
Never let the belt pass o ver the soft abdomen.
• Failure to properly route safety belts over a child's body will
cause severe injuries in an accident or other emergency situation
=> page 137 .
• Children on the front seat of any car , even with Advanced
Airbags, can be seriously injured or even killed when an airbag
inflates. A child in a rearward -facing child safety seat installed on
the front pa ssenger seat will be seriously injured and can be killed
if the front airb ag inflates .
• Never let a child stand or kneel on any seat , for example the
front seat .
• Never let a child ride in the cargo area of your vehicle .
• Alway s remembe r that a child leaning forward , sitting side­
ways or out of po sition in any way during an accident can be
s truc k by a deploy ing airb ag. This will result in serious personal
injury or death .
• If you must install a rearward facing child safety seat on the
front passenger seat because of exceptional circumstances the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light must come on and stay on , when ­
ever the ignition is swit ched on .
• If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not come on and st ay
on , perform the check s described =>

Safety belts and older children
Properly worn three point lap and shoulder belt can help
protect children weighing more than 80 lbs. (36 kg) and
who are at least 4 ft. 9 in. tall.

Using wrong child restraints or improperly installed child
restraints can cause serious personal injury or death in a crash.
• Failure to properly route safety belts over a child's body will
cause severe injuries in a crash. The lap belt portion of the three
point belt must always pass as low as possible across the pelvis,
never over the stomach or abdomen.
• An improperly worn safety belt will not provide the best protec­
tion in a crash and may cause serious personal injury. Always
make sure that children and other vehicle occupants properly
wear available restraint systems. Carefully follow the instructions provided by the manufacturers of child restraints. •
Installing a child safety seat
Securing a child safety seat using a safety
belt
Safety belts for the front passenger can be locked with the
convertible locking retractor to properly secure child
safety seats.
The safety belts emergency locking retractors for the front
passenger's seat safety belt have a convertible locking retractor for
child restraints. The safety belt must be locked so that belt webbing
cannot unreel. The retractor can be activated to lock the safety belt
and prevent the safety belt webbing from loosening up during
normal driving. A child safety seat can only be properly installed
when the safety belt is locked so that the child and child safety seat
will stay in place.
Always remember: Even though your vehicle is equipped with an
Advanced Airbag system, a child should always ride in the seat properly restrained for its age and size. .,_

Always take special precautions if you must install a forward or
rearward-facing child restraint on the front passenger's seat in
exceptional situations :
• Whenever a forward or rearward-facing child restraint is
installed on the front passenger seat , the PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF light must come on and stay on whenever the ignition is
switched on.
• If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not come on and stay
on , perform the checks described=>

provided with the child safety seat or carrier .
• Never place additional items on the seat that can increase the
total weight registered by the weight -sensing mat and can cause
injury in a crash .

Forward-facing child restraints:
• Always make sure the forward-facing seat has been designed
and certified by its manufacturer for use on a front seat with a
passenger front and side airbag .
• Never put the forward-facing child restraint up , against or very
near the instrument panel.
• Always move the passenger seat into its rearmost position in
the seat's fore and aft adjustment range, as far away from the
airbag as possible before installing the forward -facing child
restraint. The backrest must be adjusted to an upright position.
• Make sure that the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes on
and stays on all the time whenever the ignition is switched on.

& WARNING
Rearward-facing child restraints:
• A child in a rearward-facing child safety seat installed on the
front passenger seat will be seriously injured and can be killed if
the front airbag inflates -even with an Advanced Airbag System.
• The inflating airbag will hit the child safety seat or infant
carrier with great force and will smash the child safety seat and
child against the backrest, door or roof.
• Always be especially careful if you must install a rearward
facing child safety seat on the front passenger seat in exceptional
circumstances.
• Make sure that the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes on
and stays on all the time whenever the ignition is switched on.
• Never install a rearward facing child safety seat on the front
passenger seat unless the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes
on and stays on. If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not
come on and stay on have the airbag system inspected immedi ­
ately by your Audi dealer. •
Activating the convertible locking retractor
Use the convertible locking retractor to secure a child
restraint.
Always heed the child safety seat manufacturer's instruc ­
tions when installing a child restraint in your vehicle . To
activate the convertible locking retractor:
- Place the child restraint on a seat .
- Slowly pull the belt
all the way out.
- Route it around or through the child restraint belt path

Vehicle operation
-Push the child safety seat down with your full weight to
get the safety belt really tight.
- Insert the belt tongue into the buckle for that seating
position .
- Guide the safety belt back into the retractor unt il the belt
lies flat and snug on the child safety seat.
- You should hear a "clicking" noise as the belt winds back
into the inertia reel. Test the convertible locking retractor
by pul ling on the belt. You should no longer be able to
pull the belt out of the retractor. The convertible locking
retractor is now activated .
- Make sure that the red release button is facing away from
the child restraint so that it can be unbuckled quickly.
- Pull on the belt to make sure the safety belt is properly
tight and fastened so that the seat cannot move forward
or sideways more than one inch (2.5 cm).
& WARNING
Using the wrong child restraint or an improperly installed child
restraint can cause serious personal injury or death in a crash.
• Always make sure that the safety belt retractor is locked when
installing a child safety seat. An unlocked safety belt retractor
cannot hold the child safety seat in place during normal driving or
in a crash.
• Always buckle the child safety seat firmly in place even if a
child is not sitting in it. A loose child safety seat can fly around
during a sudden stop or in a crash.
• Always make sure the seat backrest to which the child restraint
is installed is in an upright position. Otherwise, the seat back with
the child safety seat attached to it could fly forward in the event of
an accident or other emergency situation. ..,

Deactivating the convertible locking retractor
The convertible locking retractor for child restraints will
be deactivated automatically when the belt is wound all
the way back into the retractor.
- Press the red button on the safety belt buckle. The belt
tongue will pop out of the buckle.
- Guide t he belt a ll the way back into its stowed position.
Always let the safety belt retract complete ly into its stowed position .
The safety belt can now be used as an ordinary safety belt without
the convertible locking retractor for child restraints.
If the conve rtible locking retractor should be activa ted inadvert­
ently, the safety belt must be unfastened and guided completely
back in to its stowed posi tion to deactiva te this feature. If the
convertible locking retractor is not deactivated, the safety belt will
gradually become tighter and uncom fortable to wear .

Notice about data recorded by
vehicle control modules
Your vehicle is not equipped with an Event Data Recorder (EDR),
installed by some manufacturers for the express purpose of
capturing data for retrieval after an accident or crash event . EDR's
are sometimes called "crash recorders".
Some state laws restrict the retrieval or downloading of data stored
by EDR's that were installed in a vehicle for the express purpose of
retrieving data after an accident or crash event w ithout the owner's
consent.
Although your vehicle is not equipped with an EDR, it is equipped
with a number of electronic control modules for various vehicle systems such as, for example, engine function, emission control, as
well as for the airbags and safety belts.
These electronic control modules also record vehic le-related data
during norma l vehicle opera tion for diagnostic and repair purposes .
The recording capacity of the electronic control modules is limited
to data (no sound is recorded) and only a small amount of data is
actually recorded over a very limited period of time and stored when
a system fault or other condition is sensed by a control unit. Some
of the data then stored may relate to vehic le speed, direction,
braking as well as restraint system use and performance in the
even t of a crash or other condition . Stored data can only be read and
downloaded with special equipment.

With ESP, control over the veh icle is increased in situations when
the vehicle is close to the limits of grip, such as during acce leration
and in curves. ESP reduces the risk of skidding a nd improves vehicle
stability under all road conditions . It operates at all speeds .
The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), E lec tronic Differentia l Lock (EDS)
and Anti-Slip Regulation System (ASR) are integrated in the Elec­
tronic Stability Program .
H ow ESP work s
The ESP control unit processes the following data from high-sensi ­
tive sensors: the rotational speed of the vehicle about its vertica l
axis, fore -and -aft and lateral acceleration forces, brake pressure and
steering angle.
Using steering ang le and vehicle speed, the direction the driver
wishes to travel is determined and continuously compared with
actual vehicle behavior . If the two do not match, for example when

clothing materials can discolor leather seats (especially if such
clothing is damp and was not dyed correctly). Dust and dirt particles
in pores, folds, and seams can have an abrasive effect and can
damage the leather surface as well as weaken seams.
The leather should be cleaned regularly as needed. After having
been used for a relatively long time, your leather seats will acquire
a rich aged finish. This is a characteristic of natural leather and a
sign of true quality.
In order to maintain the value of this natural product over the life of
your vehicle, you should follow the recommendations below:

• To keep your leather from bleaching out, do not allow it to be
exposed to bright sunlight for long periods of time. If you have to
leave the vehicle parked outside for long periods, cover the leather
to protect it from direct exposure to sunlight.
• Sharp objects on clothing, such as zippers, rivets or sharp pieces
on belts can leave permanent scratches or scrape marks on the
surface of the leather.

• After each time you clean the leather and at regular intervals, use
a leather preservative creme that contains UV -blockers and that
works into the leather. This creme will nourish and moisturize the leather, helping it to breathe and stay supple. It also helps to build
up a protective coating on the surface.
• Clean the leather every 2 -3 months, and clean any areas that get
soiled.
• Remove fresh marks made by ballpoint pens, ink, lipstick, shoe
polish, etc. as soon as possible.
• Preserve the color of the leather as needed by using a special
colored leather care creme to touch up areas of uneven color. •

Cleaning and caring for leather upholstery
and trim
Natural leather requires special care and attention.
Normal cleaning
-Clean soiled areas with a slightly moistened cotton or
woolen cloth.
More stubborn dirt
- More stubborn dirt can be removed using a cloth satu­
rated with a mild soap solution (2 tablespoons mild
liquid soap).
- Never allow the soap solution to saturate the leather, and
make certain that no water soaks into the seams.
Wipe off the soap solution with a soft, dry cloth.
Cleaning spots
-Remove fresh water-based spots (such as coffee, tea,
juices, blood) with an absorbent cloth or paper towel.
- Remove fresh
grease or oil-based spots (such as butter,
mayonnaise, chocolate) with an absorbent cloth or paper
towel, or use the cleaner from the leather care kit if the
spot has not yet penetrated into the surface of the
leather.
- Use an oil/grease dissolving spray, if
oil/grease spots
have dried on.
- Remove specific kinds of spots (ballpoint pen, felt
marker, fingernail polish, water-based paint, shoe polish,
etc.) with a spot remover specifically formulated for leather. ..,_

Safety belts
Only well-maintained safety belts work reliably when
needed.
H eavily soiled safety be lts may no t retract properly.
- Keep belts c lean.
- For clean ing, use a mild soa p an d wa ter so luti on. Let
belts dry thoroughly and away from d irect sunlight.
- D o not allo w inertia reel safe ty belts to retra ct before
they are com pletely dry .
- Check the condition of your safety belts
regularly .

Damaged safety belt s can break in a crash .
• Anything that might damage your safety belts could mean that
y ou and yo ur pas senger s would not be adequatel y prote cted in an
accident .
• Safety belt performance depend s on correct in stallation . Never
remove belt s from the vehicle to clean them.
• Do not u se chemi cal cleaning agents , blea ch or dyes . They h ave
c orrosive propertie s wh ich weaken the webbing.
• When cleaning your safety belts , in spect them for dam age . If
you discover damage, see your Audi dealer .
• Alway s read and heed all WARNINGS and the infor mation
=> page 200 . •
Engine compartment
Be es pecially caref ul when cle aning the engine compart­
ment.
Alwa ys swit ch off the ignition before cle aning the engine => & .
Plenum pan el
Remove leaves from the plenum pane l in front of the w indshield
under the engine hood. This prevents the water drain holes from
becoming blocked, and it prevents debris from entering the vehicle
inter ior through the heating and ventilation ducts.
Corrosion protection
The engine compartment and transmission have been corrosion ­
pro tected at the factory.
Good anti -co rros io n treatment is very important, particularly in the
winter. If the vehicle is frequent ly driven on salt treated roads, the
enti re eng ine compartmen t and p lenum panel should be thor ­
oughly cleaned at the end of winter and retreated to prevent salt
damage . At the same time, the unde rside o f the vehicle shou ld be
washed as we ll.
I f the engine compartment is cleaned at any time with grease
removing solut ions
ll, or if you have the engine washed, the anti ­
corrosion treatment is almost a lways removed as well. It is therefore
essential to have a long-lasting corrosio n pro tec tion reapp lied to a ll
surfaces, seams, joints and components in the engine compart ­
ment .

• Driving with underinflated tires bend more , letting them get
too hot re sulting in t read separation , sudden t ire failure and loss
of control.
• Excessive speed and /overloading can cau se heat bu ild-up ,
sudden tire failure and lo ss of control.
• If the tire pressure is too low or too high , the tires will wear
prematurely and the vehicle will not handle well .
• If the tire is not flat and you do not have to change a wheel
immediately, drive at reduced speed to the nearest service station
to che ck the tire pres sure and add air as required .

Driving without valve stem caps can cause damage to the tire
va lves. To prevent this, always ma ke sure that fact ory insta lled valve
stem caps on all whee ls are securely mounted on the valve .

Tires and vehicle load limits
There are limits to the amount of load or weight that any vehicle and
any tire can carry. A vehicle that is overloaded will not handle well
and is more difficu lt to stop. Overload ing can not only lead to loss
of vehicle contro l, but can a lso damage important parts of the
veh ic le an d ca n lead to sudden t ire fa ilu re , inc lud ing a bl owout a nd
sudden deflation that can cause the vehicle to crash.
Yo ur saf ety a nd that of you r passenge rs also de pends on making
sure that load limits are not exceeded . Vehicle load includes every ­
body and eve ryt hing in and on the vehic le . Th ese load limi ts are technica
lly referred to as the vehicle's
Gross Vehicle We ight Rating
("GVWR").
Th e "GVWR" includes the weight of the basic vehicle, all factory
insta lled accessories, a ful l tank of fuel, oil, coolant and other f luids
p lus max imum load. The ma ximu m load inc ludes the numbe r of
passengers that the vehicle is intended to carry ("seating capacity")
