Folding top ,.... ·
The warning/indic ato r l ight monitors the folding top func­
tion.
The warning/indicator light illuminates when you switch on the
ignit ion for about 2 seconds as a check and then goes out. The
warning/indicator light has the following functions:
• The light illuminates when the folding top opens or closes .
• It flashes if one of the conditions for automatically lowering or
raising the folding top is not met and the switch to actuate the
folding top is pressed .
• The ligh t illuminates when the folding top is opened or c losed
incompletely. •
Electronic stabilization program (ESP) ~
The warning/indicator light monitors the electronic stabi­
lization program .
The warning/indicator light has the following functions:
• It blinks while you are driving, when the ESP is working.
• It illuminates when you switch on the ignition for approximately
2 seconds as a function check.
• It illuminates when there is a malfunction in the ESP .
• It illuminates continuously when the ESP is switched off.
• It illuminates if there is a malfunction in the ABS, s ince the ESP
is part of the ABS system.
If the ESP warning/indicator light illuminates and stays on after you
have started the engine, this may mean that the control system has
temporari ly switched off the ESP. If this is case, you can reactivate
the ESP by switching the ign ition off and then on again. The
warning/indicator light should go out to show that the system is
ful ly functional again. For more information about the

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) I
•
T he Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIU is part of the On-Board Diag ­
n ostic (OBD II) system . The symbol lights up when the ignition is
turned on and will turn off after the engine has started and has
sett led at constant id le speed. This indicates tha t the MIL is working
properly.
The warning light il luminates when there is a malfunction in the
engine e lectronic system. Contact your authorized Audi dealer and
have the malfunction corrected.

High beam ~D
The@:D warning/indicator light illuminates when the high beams are
on or when you use the headlight flasher. For more information
about using the high beams, see=>
page 76. •
Rear spoiler J
The warning/indicator light monitors the electrically
retrac table rear spoiler.
The warning/indicator light~ has the following functions :
• It comes on for about 3 seconds as a function check when the
ignition is switched on.
• I t comes on if there is a malfunction in the electrical ly retractab le
rear spoiler . _,,,

Defective light bulb warning
The defective light bulb warning tells you when a vehicle
light bulb has become defective.
If a defective bulb has been detected by the system or a light bulb
burns out, the symbol with a message appears in the display to
tell you which bulb is burnt out and where it is located. For example:
REAR LEFT TURN SIGNAL
After 5 seconds, the message disappears. If you want to recall the
message into the display, press the CHECK button.
There are three reasons why the defective bulb message would appear in the display:
• the light bulb has burnt out=> page 277.
• the fuse is "blown" => page 273, "Replacing a fuse".
• the wire connection to the light bulb is defective.
Have the bulb replaced or the connection repaired by your autho ­
rized Audi Service department.
& WARNING
• Light bulbs are pressurized and could explode while they are
being changed causing serious personal injury.
• Work with due care when handling the high-voltage section of
gas discharge (xenon) lamps*. Failing to do so could result in death
or serious injury! •
Brake light defective K: U (USA
models) / (Canada models)
In case of a malfunction or component failure, the acoustic warning
will sound and the symbol&;
l[ (USA models)/ (Canada
models) can appear.
The following electrical components should be checked, repaired or
replaced, as necessary :
• Brake light bulbs
• All wiring connections
• Brake light switch
Contact your authorized Audi dealer for assistance if necessary.

The brake light switch is only inspected as part of the functional
check after the engine is started. •
Applies to vehicles: with automat ic headlights and rain sensor
Light /rain sensor defective >
AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHTS/AUTOMATIC WIPERS DEFECTIVE
If the symbol illuminates, the light sensor has failed. For safety
reasons the low beams are turned on permanently with the switch
in
AUTO. However , you can continue to turn the lights on and off
using the light switch. In the case of a defect in the rain sensor, the
windshield wiper lever functions are still available. Have the
light /rain sensor checked as soon as possible at a dealership. •

Clear vision
The headlights only work when the ignition is switched on . While
starting the engine or when switching off the ignition, the head ­
lights will go off and only the side marker lights will remain lit .
& WARNING
Crashe s can happen when you cannot see the road ahead and
when you c annot be seen by other motori sts.
• Always tu rn on the headlight s so th at you can see ahead and
so that others can see your ca r from the ba ck.
[ i ] Tips
• I f you remove the ignition from the ignition lock wh ile the head ­
lights are still on, a buzzer will sound as long as the driver's doo r is
open to remind you to switch off the lights .
• Always observe the spec ific local regulations for your area when
to use your lights .
• I n coo l or damp weather conditions the headlights may fog over
tempo ra rily on the inside .
- The critical factor is the t emperature diff erence between the
interior and the ex te rior of the headlight lens .
- With the main beams switched on, the light -emitting area will
be free o f condensation after a short time, however the edges of
the glass may still be fogged .
- The rear lights and turn signa ls may also be affected.
- This physical phenomenon has no effect on the life of your
vehicle 's lighting system. •

Activating

Deactivating
- Turn t he light swi tch to position 0 .
In the switch position AUTO the automatic head -and taillight
control
i s activated . The correspo nding symbol on the light swi tch
is lit .
With automatic head lights, the high -beam function is also avai lab le,
bu t with one restrict io n: If you have not switched the h ig h beams
back to low beams during automatic headlight operation (for
example, afte r driving through a tun nel), on ly the low beams come
on the next time automatic headlights are switched on. To use the
h igh beams, you first have to pull the high beam lever back and then
push the lever forward again. Parking
lights, headlights, fog lights and the rear fog light can be
swi tch ed on manually using the ligh t switch ~
page 69.
Light sensors located in the inside mirror housing and stem
constantly check the light conditions surrounding the vehicle. If
am bie nt brightness falls below a facto ry set value (e.g. wh en driv ing
into a tunnel), the head -and tai llights inc luding the license p late
ill um inat ion are automatica lly t urn ed on. When ambient br ightness
increases again, the external lights are turned off again~&.
Light sens or malfunction
If there is a light sensor malfunct ion, the symbol comes on in the
display . For sa fety reasons, the low beams are turned on perma­
nent ly with the switch in
AUTO . However, you can continue to turn
the lights on and o ff using the light swi tch . Have the light sensor
checked as soon as possible at a dealership .
& WARNING
• Automatic head- and taillight control is only intended to ass ist
the driver . This feature doe s not relieve the dr iver of hi s re spon si­
bil ity to check the headlights and to turn them on manually
ac cording to the current light and vi sibility conditions. For
e x ample , fog and rain cannot be detected by the light sensors .

io on under thes e
weather conditions and when driving
in the dark .

• I n the AUTO mode, the low beams are turned off when the igni ­
t ion is turned o ff. The remaining lights are turned o ff when the key
is taken out of the ignition lock. _.,

• your vehicle is being towed by a tow truck or if you are towing
another vehicle behind you. •
Turn signals -¢ ¢ and high beam ~D lever
The lever on the left side of the steering column is used to
operate the turn signals and the high beam as well as the
headlight flasher.

The turn signal and high beam lever has the following func ­
tions:
Turn signals ¢ Q
- Lift the lever up all the way ~ fig. 69, to use the right turn
signals, or push the lever down all the way to use the left
turn signals .
Auto-blink
-Move the lever (up or down) just to the point of resis ­
tance to use the turn signals for as long as you need
them, for example when changing lanes. - Briefly
move the lever up or down just to the point of
resistance and then release it to flash the turn signals
three times in succession. This feature allows to indicate
lane changes clearly and with minimum effort when
driving on highways.
High beam [D
- Push the lever forward to switch on the high beam.
- Pull the lever back towards you to switch off the high
beam.
Headlight flasher [D
- Pull the lever toward the steering wheel to use the head­
light flasher.
Notes on these features
• The turn signals only work with the ignition switched on . The
indicator lights ¢ or¢ in the instrument cluster => page 16 also
blink .
• After you have turned a corner, the turn signal switches off auto ­
matically.
• The high beam works only when the head lights are on . The indi­
cator light ~D in the instrument cluster i lluminates when the high
beams are on.
• The headlight flasher works only as long as you hold the lever -
even if there are no lights switched on. The ind icator light ~D in the
instrument cluster illuminates when you use the headlight flasher .

Do not use the high beam or headlight flasher if you know that these
could be blinding oncoming traffic. •
