Some ind icator lights turn on briefly to check
the function of that system when yo u switch
the ignition on. These systems are marked
with a./ in the following tab les. If one of
these ind icator lights does not turn on, there
is a malfunction in that system.

This warning/indicator light illuminates when
the brake fluid level is too low or when there
is a malfunction in the ABS, or when the park­
ing brake is set.
If the. (USA models) . (Canada models)
symbol flashes in the display with the parking
brake released , there is a malfunction in the
brake system. In addition to the symbol, one
of two messages appears in the display:
Stop vehicle and check brake fluid level
Stabilization program and ABS fault! See

The light . (USA)/ . (Canada) illuminates
when the ignition is turned on. It goes o ut af­
ter the engine has been started and the park­ ing brake is fully released . This indicates that
the brake warn ing light is funct ion ing proper­
ly.
If the brake warning light does not light up
when the engine is cranking or the parking
brake is applied, there may be a malfunction
in the electrical system. In this case, contact
your Audi dealer.
If the ABS fa ils, the ABS warn ing/ indicator

The parking brake warning light./. (Cana­
da models) illuminates whe n the park ing
b rake is set. In addit ion, a warning tone will
sound after you have driven for longer than 3
seconds and faster than 3 mph (5 km/h).

not go out after a few seconds and the
parking brake is released, or lights up

be lieve that it is safe to do so, proceed
immed iate ly at low speed to the nearest
author ized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop and have the brake sys tem inspect­
ed .
- Always keep in mind that after severa l
brake applications, you will need greater
pressu re on the brake pedal to stop you r
vehicle . Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with maximum stopping power
in critical s ituations. You must allow for
increased braking distances. The extra
distance used up by fading brakes could lead to an accident.

indicato r light monitors the safety systems
e.g. (a irbags, pre tensioners) and ill uminates
f or a few se conds eac h time you swi tch the ig­
nition on.
If the . (USA models)/ . (Canada models)
i ndicato r ligh t does no t go o ut, o r if it illum i­
na tes while yo u are driving, or if it starts to
blink, then there is a mal function somewhe re
in the system. If the light does not i lluminate
when you switch on the ignition , th is also
means there is a malfunct ion.
_& WARNING
If yo u have a ma lfunction in the safety sys­
tems, co ntact your authorized Aud i dea ler
immediately. Otherwise the safety sys­
tems may not work properly in an acc i­
dent.

If the J.J.) indicator lamp illuminates, the sys­
tem has switched the ESC
off. In this case, you
can switch the ignition
off and then on to
switch the ESC on again. The system is func­
tioning completely when the indicator lamp
switches
off .
If the II indicator lamp illuminates, the ESC
was switched
off with the [!I button.
Stabilization program and ABS fault! See
owner 's manual
If the DJ indicator lamp and the riJ ABS indi­
cator lamp illuminate and the driver message
appears, the ABS or e lectronic differential lock
is ma lfunctioning. This also interrupts the
ESC. The brakes st ill function with their nor­
mal power, but ABS is not active.
Drive to your authorized Audi dea ler immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected .

ABS/ (8 ) Anti-lock brake system
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL).
The warning/indicator light 1111 (USA mod-
e ls)
;riJ (Canada models) will come on for a
few seconds when the ignition is switched on .
The light will go o ut after an automatic check
sequence is completed.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/indicator light does not illumi­
nate when you switch the ign ition on.
- The warning/indicator light does not go out
after a few seconds .
- The warning/indicator light illuminates
wh ile driving .
The ESC indicator light also illuminates if
there is a malfunction in the ABS . The mes ­
sage
Stabilization program and ABS: fault!
See owner's manual
also appears in the in­
strument cluster display and a warning tone
sounds .
The brake system will still respond even
without the assistance of the ABS system.
See your authorized Audi dealer as soon as
possible to restore full braking performance.

Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake warning light r=> page 14 and the
ABS warning illuminate
together there may be
a malfunction in the ABS, and there may also
be a malfunction in the brake system itself
r=> &.. The ABS will not work and you will no­
tice a change in braking response and per­
formance.
In the event of a malfunction in the brake
system

Malfunction in the electronic differential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together w ith the ABS . The
ABS warning light wi ll come on if there is a
malfunction in the EDL system

See your authorized Audi dealer as soon as
possible .
_& WARNING
-If the Ill (USA models)/11] (Canada
models) warning light does not go out,
or if it comes on whi le driving, the ABS
system is not work ing properly. The vehi­
cle can then be stopped only wit h the
standard brakes (without ABS). You w ill
not have the protect ion ABS provides.
Contact your Audi dea le r as soon as pos­
sible.
- USA models: If the . warning light, the
G1 warning light and the 1111 warning
light come on together, the rear wheels
could lock up fi rst under hard braking .
Rear wheel lock -up can cause loss o f ve ­
hicle control and an accident. Have your
vehicle repaired immediately by your au­
thorized Audi dealer or a qualified work­
shop. Drive s low ly and avoid sudden,

EPC Electronic power control
This warning/indicator light monitors the
electronic power control .
The [m warning/ind icator lig ht ( Electronic
P owe r Control) illuminates when you switch
on the igni tion as a fu nction check .

while you are dr iving, then the re is a mal­
fu nction in the engine elec tron ics. Have

~ Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Ma lfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is part
of the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system .
The symbol
II lights up when the ignition is
turned on and will turn off after the eng ine
has started and has settled at constant id le
speed . This indi cates that the M IL is work ing
properly.
The wa rning lig ht illuminates when the re is a
malfu nction in the eng ine electron ic system .
Contact your a uthorized Audi dea le r and have
t h e mal func tion cor rected.
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate

nates. The engi ne speed is limited to the
speed displayed in the d river i nformat ion sys­
tem. Keep in mind that the engine speed w ill
not exceed the val ue d isplayed in the driver in­
format ion system, for example when down ­
shifting.
Please go to an authorized A udi dealer or oth­
er qualified wo rkshop to have the malfunct ion
repaired .

Homelink
Universal remote
control
General information
The Homelink universal remote control can
be programmed with hand-held transmitters
from existing equipment .
You must first program the Homelink trans­
mitter before you can use the system
~ page 88 , Programming the Homelink
transmitter.
In order to program the Homelink transmit­
ter for devices utilizing rolling code, a second
person on a ladder who can safely reach the
garage door opener motor is recommended.
It is also necessary to locate the "learn" but­
ton on your garag e door open er motor . Refer
to the ope rating instructions for the opener ,
as the location and color of this bu tton may
vary by manufacturer .
You can still use the original remote control
for the device at any time.
A WARNING
-
- Never use the Homelink transmitter
with any garage door opener that does
have not the safety stop and reverse fea­
ture as required by federal safety stand­
ards. This includes any garage door open­
er model manufactured before April 1,
1982.
- A garage door opener which cannot de­
tect an object, signaling the door to stop
and reverse does not meet current feder­
al safety standards. Using a garage door
opener without these features increases
risk of serious injury or death.
- For safety reasons never release the
parking brake or start the engine while
anyone is standing in front of the vehicle.
- A garage door or an estate gate may
sometimes be set in motion when the
Homelink remote control is being pro­
grammed. If the device is repeatedly ac- tivated, this can overstrain motor and
damage its electrical components - an
overheated motor
is a fire hazard!
- To avoid possible injuries or property
damage, please always make absolutely
certain that no persons or objects are lo­
cated in the range of motion of any
equipment being operated.

compartment.
~ Always place and properly secure heavy items in the luggage compartment as far
forward as possible.

Improperly stored luggage or other items
can fly through the vehicle causing serious
personal injury in the event of hard brak­
ing or an accident. To help reduce the risk
of serious personal injury :
- Always put objects, for example, luggage
or other heavy items in the luggage com­
partment.
- Always secure objects in the luggage
compartment using the tie-down eyelets
and suitable straps.

Heavy loads will influence the way your ve­
hicle handles. To help reduce the risk of a
loss of control leading to serious personal
injury:
- Always keep in mind when transporting
heavy objects, that a change in the cen­
ter of gravity can also cause changes in
vehicle handling:
- Always distribute the load as evenly as
possible.
- Place heavy objects as far forward in
the luggage compartment as possible.
- Never exceed the Gross Axle Weight Rat­
ing or the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
specified on the safety compliance stick­
er on the left door jamb. Exceeding per­
missible weight standards can cause the
vehicle to slide and handle differently.
- Please observe information on safe driv­
ing

To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas
from being drawn into the vehicle, always
keep the rear lid closed while driving.
- Never transport objects larger than

closed.
- If you absolutely must drive with the rear
lid open, observe the following notes to
reduce the risk of poisoning:
- Close all windows,
- Close the convertible top,
- Open all air outlets in the instrument
panel,
- Switch off the air recirculation,
- Set the fresh air fan to the highest
speed.
& WARNING ~
Always make sure that the doors, all win-
dows, the convertible top and the rear lid
are securely closed and locked to reduce
the risk of injury when the vehicle is not
being used.
- After closing the rear lid, always make
sure that it is properly closed and locked .
- Never leave your vehicle unattended es ­
pecially with the rear lid left open . A
child could crawl into the vehicle through
the luggage compartment and close the
rear lid becoming trapped and unable to
get out. Being trapped in a vehicle can
lead to serious personal injury.
- Never let children play in or around the
vehicle.
- Never let passengers ride in the luggage
compartment. Vehicle occupants must
always be properly restrained in one of
the vehicle's seating positions.
(D Tips
- Air circulation helps to reduce window
fogging. Stale air escapes to the outside
through vents in the trim panel, on the
left side of the luggage compartment. Be sure to keep these slots free and
open.
- The tire pressure must correspond to the
load. The tire pressure is shown on the
tire pressure label. The tire pressure la­
bel is located on the driver's side B-pillar .

Why safety belts?
Frontal collisions and the law of physics
Frontal crashes create very strong forces for
people riding in vehicles .

The physical principles are simple. Both the
vehicle and the passengers possess energy
which varies with vehicle speed and body
weight . Engineers call this energy "kinetic en ­
ergy ."
The higher the speed of the vehicle and the greater the vehicle 's weight, the more energy
that has to be "absorbed" in the crash .
Vehicle speed is the most significant factor . If
the speed doubles from 15 to 30 mph (25 to
50 km/h) , the energy increases 4 times!
Because the occupants in this vehicle are not
using safety belts
r::;, fig. 102, they will keep
moving at the same speed the vehicle was
moving just before the crash, until something
stops them -here, the wall
c:> fig . 103 .
The same principles apply to people sitting in
a vehicle that is involved in a frontal collision .
Even at city speeds of 20 to 30 mph (30 to 50
km/h), the forces acting on the body can

reach one ton (2,000 lbs, or 1,000 kg) or
more. At higher speeds, these forces are even
greater.
People who do not use safety belts are also
not attached to their vehicle. In a frontal colli­
sion they will also keep moving forward at the
speed their vehicle was travelling just before
the crash. Of course, the laws of physics don't
just apply to frontal collisions, they determine what happens in all kinds of accidents and col ­
lisions .
What happens to occupants not wearing
safety belts?
In crashes unbelted occupants cannot stop
themselves from flying forward and being in­
jured or killed. Always wear your safety belts!

Unbelted occupants are not able to resist the
tremendous forces of impact by holding tight
or bracing themselves . Without the benefit of
safety restraint systems, the unrestrained oc­ cupant will slam violently into the steering
wheel, instrument panel, windshield, or what­
ever else is in the way r::;, fig . 104 . This impact
with the vehicle interior has all the energy
they had just before the crash.
Never rely on airbags alone for protection .
Even when they deploy , airbags provide only
additional protection . Airbags are not sup­
posed to deploy in all kinds of accidents. Al­
though your Audi is equipped with airbags, all
vehicle occupants, including the driver, must
wear safety belts correctly in order to mini­
mize the risk of severe injury or death in a
crash.

Remember too, that airbags wi ll deploy on ly
once and that your safety belts are always
there to offer protect ion in those accidents in
which airbag s are not suppo sed to deploy or
when they have already deployed . Unbelted
occupants can also be thrown out of the vehi ­
cle where even more severe o r fatal inju ries
can occu r.
Safety belts protect
People think it's possible to use the hands to
brace the body in a minor collision. It's simply
not tru e!

Safety belts used properly can make a big dif ­
ference . Safety be lts help to keep passengers
in their seats , g radually reduce energy levels
applied to the body in an accident, and help
preven t the uncontro lled moveme nt that can
cause serious injur ies . In additio n, safety belts
reduce the danger of being thrown out of the
ve hicle .
Safety belts attach passengers to the car and
g ive them the benefit of being s lowed down
more gently or "softly" t hrough t he "give" in
the safety belts , crush zones and other safety
fe atures engineered into today's vehicles. By
"absorb ing" the kinetic energy over a longer
period of time, the safety belts make the
forces on the body more "to lerable" and less
likely to cause injury .
Although these examples are based on a fron­ tal collision , safety belts can also subs tan tial­
ly reduce the risk of injury in other k inds of
crashes . So, whether you' re on a long tr ip or
just going to the corner store, always buckle u
p and make sure others do, too. Accident sta ­
tist ics show that veh icle occupants properly
wearing safety belts have a lower risk of be ing
injured and a much better chance of surviving
an accident. Properly using safety belts also
greatly increases the ability of the supplemen ­
tal airbags to do the ir job i n a collision . Fo r
t hi s reason, wea ring a safety belt is legally re­
quired in mos t countr ies includi ng m uch of
t h e Un ited States and Canada .
Although your Aud i is equipped wi th a irbags,
you still have to wear the safety be lts prov id­
ed. Front ai rbags , fo r example , a re activated
only in some front al collisions. The fron t air­
bags are not act ivated in a ll frontal coll is ions,
in side and rear co llisions, in roll overs or in
cases where there is not eno ugh deceleration
through impact to the front of the veh icle.
The same goes for the other a irbag systems in
your Aud i. So, always wear yo ur safety belt
and make su re everybody in your veh icle is
properly restrai ned!
Important safety instructions about

Safety belts must always be properly posi­
tioned across the strongest bones of your
body.

" Ma ke su re that yo ur safety belts are always
ready for use and are not damaged.
A WARNING

Not wear ing safety be lts or wearing them
i mproperly i ncreases the r is k of se rious
personal injury and death. Safety belts can
work on ly when used correctly.
- Always fasten your safety belts correct ly
befo re driving off and make sure all pas­
sengers are properly restrained.
- For maximum protection, safety belts
must always be pos itioned c orrectly on
the body .

112 Airbag system
Front airbags
Description of front airbags
The airbag system can provide supplemental
protection to properly restrained front seat occupants.

Your vehicle is equipped with an "Advanced
Airbag System" in compliance with United
States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard
(FMVSS) 208 as applicable at the time your
vehicle was manufactured . The safety belts
for the front seats have "pretensioners" that
help to take slack out of the belt system. The
pretensioners are also activated by the elec·
tronic control unit for the airbag system.
The front safety belts also have load limiters
to help reduce the forces applied to the body in a crash.
The airbag for the driver is in the steer ing

P lease be sure to heed the WARNINGS -they
