Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coo la nt gauge ¢ page 10 , fig. 3@
only works when the ign ition is on. To prevent
damage to your e ngine, please note the fo l­
l owing important points:
Engine cold
As long as the nee dle rem ains a t the left end
of the gauge, the engine s till h as not reac hed
its operating temperat ure. Avoid high engine
speeds, heavy engine loads and heavy throt­
tle.
Normal temperature
W hen the engine has re ache d its ope rat ing
temperature, the need le w ill move into the
mid dle of t he gauge and rema in there .
If the
engine is working hard at high outside tem ­
peratures, the needle may turn fu rther to the
right. This is no cause for concern as long as
the . warning light in the instrument cluster
does not illuminate .
When the. warning light sta rts to flash,
th is can mean one of two things: either the
coolant
temperature is too high, o r the coo l­
ant
level is too low ¢ page 17 .
A WARNING

- N ever open t he eng ine hood if you see or
he ar steam, or if you see engi ne coo lant
drippin g from t he en gine compar tment .

coo l off fi rst until yo u can n o longe r see
or hea r steam or coolant escap ing.

- M ounting ad ditiona l lights or accessories
i n fr ont of the air inlets reduces the coo l­
ing effect of t he radiato r. At high o utsi de
tempe rat ures or h igh engine load, the
eng ine could overheat.
- The front spoiler has been designed to
properly d istribute the cooling a ir when
the vehicle is movi ng. If the spoiler is
damaged, this could reduce the coo ling
e ff ect a nd th e eng ine could then ove r­

-L Engine cooling system
A malfunction in the engine cooling system
must be repaired as soon as possible.
When the. symbol in the display flashes,
then either the eng ine coolant
temperature is
too high, or the coolant
level is too low . In ad ­
d ition to the symbol, the following message
a lso appears in the display:
S witc h off engin e and ch eck c ool ant l evel
~ Pull off the road and stop the vehicle.
~ Turnoff the engine.
~ Check coolant level ¢ page 172.
~ Add coolant if necessary¢ page 172.
~ Conti nue driving only after the eng ine cool ­
ant warn ing/ indicator l ight goes out .
~ Contact you r authorized Audi dea le r fo r as-
s istance if necessary.
If the engine coolant level is correct, then the radiator fan may be the cause of the malf unc­
tion .
If the generator warning/ind icator light
should also illuminate¢
page 16, then the
fan belt may be damaged .
A WARNING
-If your veh icle should break down for
mechanical or other reasons, park at a
safe distance from moving traffic, turn
off the engine and turn on the hazard
warning lights
¢ page 51, Emergency
flasher.
-
- Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the en­ gine compartment - you risk being scald­
ed . Wait until you can no longer see or
hear steam or coo lant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any veh icle
is a dangerous area. Before you perform
any work in the engine compartment,
turn
off the engi ne and allow it to cool.
Follow the wa rning sticke rs.

Do not continue driving if the. symbo l
illuminates . There is a malfunct ion in the engine cooling system
-you could damage
your engine.
~ Electro-mechanical power assist
If the indicator light i lluminates while you are
driv ing, there is a malfunction in the electro­
mechan ica l steer ing. If the indicator light is
showing £~ ). there may be a reduction in pow ­
er steeri ng assist . If the indicator light is
showing ., there may be a total loss of pow­
er steeri ng assist. The steer ing must be in ­
spected immed iately by a qualified wo rkshop
Q & . With the engine not running (e.g. when
the car is being towed), there is a lso no power
assist available .
A WARNING
-
If there is a malf u nction, the indicator
light for the electro-mechanical power as­
sist illuminates. Seek professional assis­
tance.
~ Convertible top
The warning/indicator light monitors the con­
vertible top function.
The l!1 warning/indicator light illuminates
when you switch on the ignition for about 2
seconds as a check and then goes out. The
warning/indicator light has the following
funct ions:
- The light illuminates when the folding top opens or closes.
- It flashes if one of the conditions for auto­
matically lowering or ra is ing the convertible
top is not met and the switch to actuate the
convert ible top is pressed.
- The light illuminates when the convert ible
top is opened or closed
incompletely.
!;.! ~ Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC)
If the GJ ind icator lamp b lin ks wh ile d riving,
the ESC or ASR (Anti-Slip Reg ulation) is active-
ly reg ulating .

throughout each season .

We recommend the following sett ing :
• Rotate the knob

Using the previously recommended setting is
the quickest way to achieve a comfortable cli ­
mate in the vehicle . Th is setting should there­
fore only be changed when persona l comfort
l eve ls o r certain circumstances requ ire it .
The climate controls are a combination of au ­
tomatic heating and ventilation systems and a
coo ling system which dehum idifies and coo ls
the air inside the vehicle .
The climate controls automatically maintain a temperature once it has been set. The tem­pe rat ure of the air from the v ents, fan speed
(air vo lume) and ai r distribu tion are also auto ­
mat ica lly adjusted . The system also takes into
account strong sunshine so that manua l ad ­
justment is not necessary . So in almost all
cases,
a utomatic mode offers the best cond i­
tions for the comfort of the occupants at all
times of the year

Plea se note:
In cooling mode, relative humidity in the inte­
rior is reduced . This prevents the w indows
from fogg ing up .
When relative hum idity and temperatures
outside are high,
condensation can drip from
the a ir cond ition ing evaporator and form a
poo l of water under the veh icle. This is normal
and not an ind ication of a leak!
When outside temperatures are low, the fan
does not switch to a higher speed until the coolant has reached an adequate tempera ­
tu re , with the exception of the defrost set­
t ing.
When accelerating at wide-open throttle, the
air condit ioning compressor is temporar ily
switched off to maintain full engine power.
In order to ensure engine cooling under ex­
treme engine loads, the compressor is switch­
ed off if coolant temperatures cl imb too high .
Funct ions are set by turn ing the rotary knob
or switched o n and off by tapp ing the buttons.

Pollutant filt er
The pollutant filter (particle filter) ensures
that contaminants in the outside air (such as
d ust or pollen) are greatly reduced or stop­
ped. The air is also filtered in recircu lation
mode.
The po llutant filter element must be changed
according to the intervals specified in the
maintenance schedule so that the air condi­
tioning system's performance is not adversely
affected .
If the filter's effectiveness is weakened by
driving the vehicle in areas with heavily pollut­
ed outside air, the filter element should also
be changed in between the listed services.
A WARNING
For safety reasons, it is important that all
w indows are free of ice, snow, and conden­
sation. Only then is good visib ility ensured.

-If you suspect that the clima te controls
have been damaged, swi tch the system off to avoid damaging it, and have it in­
spected by an authorized Audi dea
ler .
- Audi climate control system repairs re­
quire special expertise and the proper
tools . You should contact an authorized
Audi dealer in the event of malfunctions.
(D Tips
- To avoid adversely affecting heating and
cooling performance and to prevent con­
densation on the windows, the air intake
in front of the windshield must be free of
ice, snow, and leaves.
- The a ir coming from the vents and circu­
lat ing through the entire interior is ex­
tracted through the out let slots in the
side pane ls in the luggage compartment .
Make sure that the outlet slots are not
covered by clothing, etc.
- Climate contro l works most effectively if
the windows are closed. However, if the
inter io r of a par ked veh icle is ext reme ly
hot from the sun's rays, briefly opening
the windows can speed up the cooling process .
Setting temperature

T o set a lower temperature, turn the rotary
knob to the left. To set a higher temperature,
turn the rotary knob to the r ight. There are
additional intermediate settings available to
adjust the temperature as needed.

The windshield and side windows ore defrost­
ed or cleared of condensation as quickly as
possible .
• To turn on the defogger/defroster, press the

• To turn the defogger/defroster off, press the
~ button again, o r the IAUTOI button.
Temperature is controlled automatically . The
maximum amount of a ir flows mainly from
vents 1 <=>
page 69.
A small amount of air flows from vents 2 - if
they are open <=>

Press ing the ~ button switches off recircu la­
tion mode.
Automatic operation ~
Standard operating mode at all times of the
year.
Turning on automatic operation
• Set the temperature you want.

Automatic operation ensures constant tem­
perat ures in the inter ior and dehum idifies the
ai r inside the vehicle . Air temperature, vol­
ume, and distribution are controlled automat­
ica lly to reach or maintain the desired interior
temperature as quickly as possib le. Fluctua­
tions in exterior temperature and the effects
of temperature from the position of the sun
are compensated for automat ically .
Manual air recirculation mode~
The recirculation mode prevents polluted out­
side air from entering the vehicle interior.
Switching on air recir culation
• Press the button I;]<=> page 67, fig. 78

Switching off air recirculation
• Press the button ~ again, or
• Press the
!AU TO ! button, or •
Press the~ button .
In recircu lation mode, air is drawn from the
vehicle interior, filtered, and recirculated. We
recommend that you se lect recirculation
mode
briefly <=>.&. under the fo llowing condi­
tions:
When driving through a tunnel or in a traff ic
jam so that exhaust fumes and odors cannot
enter the vehicle interior.
A WARNING
You shou ld not use the recirculation mode
for an extended period since no fresh air is
drawn in, and with the air condit ioning
switched off the windows can fog up - this
i ncreases the r isk of an accident!
A/C operation ~
Switching on A/C
• Press the IA/Cl button <=> page 67 , fig . 78 .
Switching A/C off
• Press the IA/Cl button again.
T he air is not coo led and humidity is not re­
moved when cooling mode is switched off.
This can cause fog on the windows. Cooling mode switches off automatically when the
outside temperature is be low zero .
(D Tips
If the LED in the switch stays on after A/C
operation has been switched off(= switch­
ing the A/C off), there is a fault in an air
cond itioning component. Please consult
an authorized Audi dealer when there is an
operating problem .
Rear window defogger~
The rear window defogger clears the rear win­
dow of condensation.
• Press the QW button <=> page 67, fig. 78 to
turn the rear window defogger on and off.

Detergent additives in the o il will make fresh
oil look dark after the engine has been run­
n ing for a short time . This is norma l and is not
a reason to change the oil more often than recommended.
D am ag e o r m alfun ction s due to lack of
m ainten ance
It is essent ial that yo u change your oil at the
recommended intervals using only engine oil
that complies with Audi oi l standard
VW 502 00 . Your Lim ited New Vehicle War­
ranty does not cover damage or malfunctions
due to failure to follow recommended mainte­
nance and use requ irements as set forth in
the Audi Owner's Manual and Warranty
&
M aintenance book let . Your dea ler will have to
deny warranty coverage un less you p resen t to
the dea ler proof in the form of Servi ce or Re­
pa ir Orde rs that all schedu led maintenance
was performed in a timely manner.
Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an ade­
quate amount of oil to lubricate and cool all
of its moving ports.
I n o rder to prov ide effective lubr ication and
cooling of internal engine components, a ll in­
ternal comb ustion engines consume a certain
amount of oil. Oi l consumption varies from
engine to engine and may change significantly
over the life of the eng ine . Typically, eng ines
with a specif ied break-in per iod (see
c::> page 149) consume more oil during the
break-in per iod than they consume after oil
consumption has stabilized .
Under normal conditions, the rate of oil con­
sumpt io n depends on the quality and viscosity
of the oil, the RPM (revolutions per m inute) at
which the engine is operated, the ambient
temperature and road cond it io ns. Furthe r fac­
tors are the amo unt of o il d ilution from wate r
condensation or fuel residue and the ox ida­
tion level of the oi l. As any engine is subject to
wear as mileage bui lds up, the oil consump­
tion may increase over t ime until replacement
of worn components may become necessary. Wi
th a ll these variab les coming into p lay, no
standard rate of oil consumption can be es­
tab lished or spec ified. There is no alte rnative
to regular and frequent check ing of the o il lev­
el, see
Note .
If the yellow engine oil leve l warning symbo l

D riving with an insufficient o il level is like­
l y to cause sever e damage to the engine.
(D Tips
- The oil pressure warn ing display. is
not an indicator of the oil level. Do not
rely on it . Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at r egular intervals, pr ef­
erably ea ch time you refuel, and alway s
before going on a long trip.
- If you have the impression yo ur engine
cons umes excessive amoun ts of oil, we
recommend that you consult your Aud i
dea ler to have the cause of your concern
properly diagnosed. Keep in mind that
the accurate meas urement of o il con­
sumption requires great care and may
take some t ime . Your Audi dea ler has in­
st ruct ions about how to measure oil con­
sumption acc urately.

@ For the sake of the environment
-Before changing your oil, first make sure
you know where you can properly dispose
of the used o il.
- Always dispose of used engine oil proper­
l y. Do not dump it on garden soi l, wood­
ed areas, into open streams or down
sewage dra ins.
- Recycle used engine oil by taking it to a
used engine oil collection facility in your
area, or contact a service station .
Engine cooling system
Coolant
The engine coolant performs two functions: it
keeps the engine from overheating and it pro­ tects the engine from freezing in the winter.
The cooling system is sea led and generally re­
q uir es lit tle atten tion .
The cooling system has been filled at the fac ­
tory with a pe rmanent coo lant which does not
need to be c hanged. The coolant consists of a
mixture o f spec ial ly conditioned water and the
manuf acturer 's glyco l-basedcoolan t addi -
tiv e G13 antifreeze with ant icorros ion addi ­
tives (50% for USA models ; 60% for Canadian
mod els) . This mixture both assures the neces­
sary
frost protection and p rotects metal com ­
ponents in the engine's coo ling system from
corrosion and scaling . It a lso raises the boil­
i ng point of the coolant .
Do not reduce the concentration o f the coo l­
ant in the summer by adding plain water.
The
proportion of coolant add it ive must be at
l e a st 50 % but not mor e than 60 %
to main­
tain antifreeze protection and coo ling efficien­
cy .
If the coolant frost protect io n is too low,
the coolant cou ld free ze and dam age the veh i­
cle heating and eng ine cooling system.
For yea r-round driving, antifreeze is added at
the fac to ry for tempera tures down to:
-- 31°F( -35°C)USA
- -40 °F ( -40 °C) Canada.

If you must add coo lant, use a mixture of wa ­
ter and coolant additive . Mix ing the coo lant
additive with distilled water is recommended.

- Before winter sets in, have the coo lant
checked to see if the coolant additive in
your vehicle is sufficient to meet the cli­ mate condi tions. This is especi ally impor­
tan t if you live i n a region wher e th e win­
ter is ex treme ly co ld . If necessary, i n­
crease t he p ropo rtion of coo lant add itive
to 60% .
- Whe n ad ding coolant additive t o yo ur
c ooling sys tem, reme mbe r:
- We recommend using on ly coolant ad­
d itive G12++ or G13 for your vehicle .
This coolant additive is availab le at au­
thor ized Audi dealers . O ther types of
a ntifreeze can s ignifica ntly reduc e cor­
rosion prote ction. The result ing cor ro­
sion can cau se a loss o f coolan t and se­
rio us engine d amage .
- Do not add any ty pe of rad iator leak seal­
a nt to yo ur vehicle 's engine c oolant .
A dd ing radia tor repair fl uid may adverse ­
ly affect the f unction and pe rformance of
your coolin g system and co uld resu lt in
damage not covered by your New Ve hicle
L imited Warranty.

Checking the engine coolant level
The engine coolant level can be checked with
a quick glance.

Before you check anything in the engine com­
partment,
a lway s read and he ed a ll WARN­

., Park your vehicle on a level surface.
., Switch the ign ition
off .
., Read the coolant level at the coolant expan­
sion tank
opage 166, fig . 128. With a cold
engi ne, it must be above the "min" mark.
With a hot engine, it can be a l ittle above
the indicated range.
The location of the coolant expans ion tank
can be seen in the engine compartment illus­
tration
o page 166.
To obtain an accurate read ing, the eng ine
must be sw itched
off.
The expans ion tank in your vehicle is equipped
with an electric coolant level sensor.
When the coolant level is too low, the warning
light in the Auto-Check System
opage 17will
illum inate until you add coolant and the level
has been restored to normal. Even thoug h
there is an electric coolant level sensor, we
still recommend you check the coolant leve l
from time to t ime.
Coolant lo ss
Coolant loss may indicate a leak in the cooling
system. In the event of coolant loss, the cool­
ing system should be inspected immediately by your authorized Audi dea
ler .
It is not
enough merely to add coo lant .
In a
seal ed system, losses can occu r on ly if
the boi ling po int o f the coo lan t is exceeded as
a res ult of overheating.
(D Note
Do n ot add any type o f radiator leak se al­
ant to your veh icle's engine coo lant. Add ­
i ng radiator repa ir fl uid may adverse ly af ­
fect the functio n and performance of you r
cooling system and could result in damage
not cove red by your New Veh icle l imited
Warranty.
Adding coolant
Be very careful when adding engine coolant.
Before you check anyth ing in the engine com ­
partment,
a lways read and heed all WARN­
INGS o .A in Working in the engine compart­
ment on page 164.
Req uirement: There m ust be a res idual
amount of coo lant in the expansio n tank

Replacement engine coo lant must conform to
exact spec ificat ions

We recommend using only coolant addit ive
Gl2++, Gl3 or in an emergency Gl2+. Do
not
use a different add itive . In an emergency use
plain water until you can get the co rrect addi­
t ive and can resto re the correct ratio. This
sho uld be done as soon as poss ib le.

If you have lost a consi derable amount of
coolant, then you should add co ld antifreeze
and cold water only when the engine is co ld .
Always use
new engine coolant when refi lling.
D o not fi ll coolant above the "MAX " mark . Ex­
cess coolant will be forced out th rough the
p ress ure rel ief valve in the cap when the en­
g ine becomes hot .
A WARNING ,_________
- The cooling system is under press ure and
can get very hot . Reduce the risk of
sca ld ing from hot coo lant by following
these steps.
- Tur n
off the eng ine and a llow itto cool
down.
- P rotect your face, hands and arms from
escap ing f lu id a nd steam by cover ing
the cap wi th a la rge, thick rag.
- Turn the cap slow ly and very ca refully
in a cou nte r-clockw ise d irect ion while
a pply ing ligh t, downw ard p ress ure on
the to p of the cap.
- T o avo id being burned, do no t sp ill an­
tifreeze or coolan t on the exhaust sys­
tem or hot engine parts . U nder certa in
conditions, the ethylene glyco l in en­
gine coolant can catc h fire .
- Antifreeze is poisonous . Always store an ­
tifreeze in its original container and we ll
o ut o f the reach of children.
- If you drain the coolant , it must be
caught and safely stored in a proper con­
tainer clearly marked "poison".
@ Note
- Do not add coolant if the expansion tank
i s empty . Ai r could enter the cooling sys­
tem and damage the engine. If this is
the case, do not continue driving. Seek professional assistance.
- Coolant po llutes the env ironment and
could cause a n engine fire. Excess coo l­
ant wi ll be f orced out through the pres­
su re re lief valve in the cap when the en ­
gine becomes hot.

Drained coolant sho uld not be reused. A l­

, Radiator fan
The radiator fan switches on automatically by
itself .
The electric radiator fan is controlled by ther­
moswitches that switch on and
off depending
on coo lant and eng ine compartment tempera­
tures.
An a uxiliary electric radiato r fan* sw itches on
and
off depending on coolant temperature
and othe r vehicle ope rat ion conditions .
After yo u switch the eng ine off, the aux iliary
f an can continu e running for up to 10 m inut es
- even with the ignition off. It can even switch
on again later by itself¢ & , if
- t he temperatu re of the engine coo lant rises
due to the hea t build -up from the engine in
the engine compa rtment, or
- the engine compa rtment heats up because
the vehicle is parked in intense sunlig ht.
A WARNING ~
- To reduce the risk of persona l in ju ry nev-
er touch the radiator fan .
- The a uxiliary electric fan is tempe rat ure
contro lled and can switch on suddenly
even when the engine is not running.
- The a uxiliary radiator fa n sw itches on a u­
tomatically when the engine coo lant
reaches a certai n temperature and will
continue to ru n until the coo lant temper­
