ries that prov ide power, such as solar panels

Beverage containers in the cup holders should
a lways have a lid. If not, beverages could spill
and cause damage to vehicle equipment, such
electronics or seat covers.
Additional storage compartments
You w ill find a range of storage compartments
and holders at different locat ions in the vehicle .
- Compartments in the doors
- Storage area in the glove compartment . The
glove compartment can be locked using the mechanical key
qpage 25 .
-Storage compartment under the center arm­
rest*
- Storage compartment on the rea r side of the
seat*. The compartment can hold a maximum
weight of 2.2 lbs (1 kg) .
A WARNING

-Always leave the lid on the glove compart­
ment cover closed while driv ing to reduce
the risk of injury.
- Only use the storage compartments in the
door trim panels to store small objects that
will not stick out of the compartment and
impair the range of the side airbags.

Safe driving
_& WARNING
Heavy loads will influence the way your vehi­
cle handles. To help reduce the risk of a loss
of control leading to serious personal injury:
- Always keep in mind when transporting
heavy objects, that a change in the center of
gravity can also cause changes in vehicle
handling:
- Always distribute the load as evenly as
possible .
- Place heavy objects as far forward in the luggage compartment as possible.
- Never exceed the Gross Axle Weight Rating
or the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating specified
on the safety compliance sticker on the left
door jamb. Exceeding permissible weight
standards can cause the vehicle to slide and hand le differently .
- Please observe information on safe driving
c';> page 181.
_& WARNING
To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from
being drawn into the vehicle, always keep the
rear lid closed while driving.
- Never transport objects larger than those
fitting completely into the luggage area be­ cause the rear lid cannot be fully closed .
- If you absolutely must drive with the rear lid open, observe the following notes to reduce
the risk of poisoning:
- Close all windows,
- Close the convertible top,
- Open all air outlets in the instrument pan-
el,
- Switch off the air recirculation,
- Set the fresh air fan to the highest speed .

Always make sure that the doors, all win­
dows, the convertible top and the rear lid are
securely closed and locked to reduce the risk
of injury when the vehicle is not being used.
- After closing the rear lid, always make sure
that it is properly closed and locked.

Never leave your vehicle unattended espe­
cially with the rear lid left open. A child
could crawl into the vehicle through the lug­
gage compartment and close the rear lid be­
coming trapped and unable to get out . Be­
ing trapped in a vehicle can lead to serious
personal injury.
- Never let children play in or around the vehi­
cle.
- Never let passengers ride in the luggage compartment . Vehicle occupants must al­
ways be properly restrained in one of the ve­ hicle 's seating positions.
{1) Tips
- Air circulation helps to reduce window fog­
ging . Stale air escapes to the outside
through vents in the trim panel, on the left
side of the luggage compartment. Be sure
to keep these slots free and open.
- The tire pressure must correspond to the
load. The tire pressure is shown on the tire
pressure label. The tire pressure label is lo­
cated on the driver's side B-pillar. The tire
pressure label lists the recommended cold
tire inflation pressures for the vehicle at its
maximum capacity weight and the tires that
were on your vehicle at the time it was man­ ufactured. For recommended tire pressures
for normal load conditions, please see chap­
ter
c';> page 257.
Tie -downs
The luggage compartment is equipped with four
tie-downs to secure luggage and other items .

In a coll is ion, the laws of physics mean that even
sma ller i tems that are loose in the vehicle will
become heavy missiles that can cause serious in ­
jury. Items in the ve hicle possess energy which
vary with vehicle speed and the weight of the
item. Veh icle speed is the most signif icant factor .
F or example, in a frontal collision at a speed o f
30 mph (48 km/h) , the forces acting on a 10 lbs
(4.5 kg) object are about 20 times the norma l
weight of the item. Th is means that the weight
of the item would suddenly be about
200 lbs (90 kg) . You can imagine the injuries that
a 200 lbs (90 kg) item flying freely th rough the
passenger compa rtment cou ld cause in a col li­
sion li ke this.
_& WARNING
-
Wea k, damaged o r imp roper straps used to
secure i tems to tie-downs can fail during hard
braking o r in a collision and cause serious per ­
sonal injury.
- Always use su itab le mounting straps and
properly secure items to the tie-downs in
the luggage compartment to help prevent
items from shifting or f ly ing fo rward as dan­
gerous missiles.
- Never attach a child safety seat tether strap
to a tie-down .

Why safety belts?
Frontal collisions and the law of physics
Frontal crashes create very strong forces for peo­
ple riding in vehicles .

The physical principles are simple. Both the vehi­
cle and the passengers possess energy which var­
ies w ith vehicle speed and body weight . Engi­
neers call this energy "k inetic energy."
The higher the speed of the vehicle and the
greater the vehicle's weight, the more energy
that has to be "absorbed" in the crash.
Vehicle speed is the most significant factor .
If
the speed doubles from 15 to 30 mph (25 to 50
km/h), the energy increases 4 times!
Because the passengers of this vehicle are not us­
ing safety belts
c::> fig. 155, they will keep moving
at the same speed the vehicle was moving just
before the crash, unti l something stops them -
here, the wall

The same principles apply to people sitting in a
vehicle that is involved in a frontal collision . Even
at c ity speeds of 20 to 30 mph (30 to 50 km/h),
the forces acting on the body can reach one ton

(2,000 lbs, or 1,000 kg) or more . At higher
speeds, these forces are even greater.
People who do not use safety belts are also not
attached to their vehicle. In a frontal collision
they will also keep moving forward at the speed
their vehicle was travelling just before the crash.
Of course, the laws of physics don't just apply to
frontal collisions, they determine what happens
in all kinds of accidents and collisions .
What happens to occupants not wearing
safety belts?
In crashes unbelted occupants cannot stop
themselves from flying forward and being in­
jured or killed . Always wear your safety belts!

Unbelted occupants are not ab le to resist the tre­
mendous forces of impact by holding tight o r
bracing themselves . Without the benefit of safe­
ty restraint systems, the unrestrained occupant
will slam violently into the steering wheel, in­
strument panel, windshield, or whatever else is i n the way
c::> fig . 157 . This impact w ith the vehi ­
cle inter ior has all the energy they had just be­
fore the crash.
Never rely on a irbags alone for protection. Even
when they deploy, a irbags provide only addit ional
protection. Airbags are not supposed to deploy in
all kinds of accidents. Although your Audi is
equipped with airbags, all vehicle occupants, in ­
cluding the driver, must wear safe ty belts cor­
rectly in order to minimize the risk of severe in­
ju ry or death in a crash.
Remember too, that airbags will deploy only
once and that your safety be lts are always there .,...

Airbag system
Standard 208 with which the Advanced Airbag
System in your vehicle was cert ified has been in­
stalled on the front passenger seat. For a listing
of the child restraints that were used to certify
compliance with the US Safety Standard
¢page 220.
The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; light in the
headliner tells you when the front Advanced Air­
bag on the passenger side has been turned off by
the electronic control unit.
Each t ime you turn on the ignition, the
PASSEN·
GER AIR BAG OFF,-;; ON ~
light will come on
for a few seconds and:
- PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; will come on if
the front passenger seat is not occupied,
- PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ~; will come on if
the e lectrical capacitance measured by the ca ­
pacitive passenger detection system for the
front passenger seat equals the combined ca­ pacitance of an infant up to about one year of
age and one of the rearward-facing or forward ­
facing child restraints listed in Federal Motor
Vehicle Safety Standard 208 with which the Ad­
vanced Airbag System in your vehicle was certi­
fied. For a listing of the child restraints that
were used to certify your vehicle's compliance
with the U.S. Safety Standard¢
page 220.
-PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ~; will come on if
there is a small child or chi ld restraint on the
front passenger seat,
- PASSENGER AIR BAG ON @will go off if the
front passenger seat is occupied by an adult as
registered by the capacitive passenger detec­
tion system ¢
page 20 7, Monitoring the Ad­
vanced Airbag System.
The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; light comes on
when electrical capacitance registered on the
front passenger seat is equa l to or less than the
comb ined capacitance of a typ ica l 1 year-old in­
fant and one of the rearward-fac ing or forward­
facing ch ild restraints listed in Federal Motor Ve­
h icle Safety Standard 208 with wh ich the Ad­
vanced Ai rbag System in your vehicle was cert i­
fied.
If the total electrical capac itance registered on
the front passenger seat is more than that of a

typical 1 year -old chi ld but less than the weight
of a sma ll adult, the front airbag on the passen­
ger side can deploy (the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF ~;
light does not come on).
If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; light does
not come on, the front airbag on the passenger
s ide has not been turned off by the e lectron ic
contro l unit and can deploy if the control unit
senses an impact that meets the conditions stor­
ed in its memory .
For example, the airbag may deploy if :
-a small child that is heav ier than a typical 1
year -old child is on the front passenger seat
(regard less of whether the child is in one of the
child safety seats listed¢
page 220), or
- a child who has outgrown child restraints is on
the front passenger seat.
If the front passenger airbag is turned off, the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF,-;; light comes on in
the headliner and stays on .
If the front passenger airbag deploys, the Feder­
al Standard requ ires the airbag to meet the " low
risk" deployment criteria to reduce the risk of in­
jur y through interaction with the airbag. "Low
risk" deployment occurs in those crashes that
take place at lower decelerations as defined in
the electronic control unit¢
page 208, PASSEN­
GER AIR BAG OFF~; ON~ light.
Always remember, a child seat or infant carrier
installed on the front seat may be struck and
knocked out of posit ion by the rapidly inflating
passenger's airbag in a frontal collision. The a ir­
bag could greatly reduce the effectiveness of the
ch ild restraint and even ser iously injure the child
during inflation.

A child in a rearward-facing child seat instal­
l ed on the front passenger seat will be seri­
ously injured and can be killed if the front air­
bag inflates - even with an Advanced Airbag
System.
- The inflating airbag will hit the ch ild seat or
infant carrier with great force and will .,.

met, be sure to check the light regularly to make
certain that the
P A SSENGER AIR BAG OFF '-1;
light stays on continuously whenever the ignition
is on. If the
PAS SENGER AIR BAG OFF '-1; light
does not appear on and does not stay on all the
time, stop as soon as it is safe to do so and
- reactivate the system by turning the ign ition
off for more than 4 seconds and then turning it
on again;
- remove and reinstall the child restraint. Make sure that the child restraint is properly instal­led and that the safety belt for the front pas­
senger seat has been correctly routed through
the child restraint as descr ibed in the child re­
straint manufacturer's i nstructions;
- make sure that the convertible locki ng retrac­
tor on the safety be lt for the front passenger
seat has bee n activated and that the safety belt
has been pulled tight.
- make sure that no electrical device (such as a
laptop, CD player, electronic games device,
power inverter or seat hea ter for child seats) is
placed or used on the front passenger seat if
the device is connected to the 12•volt socket or
the cigarette lighter socket;
- make sure that no seat heater has been retro ­
fitted or otherwise added to the front passen­
ger seat;
- make sure that nothing can interfere with the
safety belt buckles and that they are not ob­
structed;
- make sure that there are no wet objects (such
as a wet towel) and no water or other liquids on
the front passenger seat cush ion.
If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; light st ill
doe s not come on ...
If the PAS SENGER AIR BA G OFF '-1; light sti ll
does not come on and does not stay on continu­
ously (when the ignition is sw itched on),
- take the child restraint off t he front passenger
seat and have the airbag system inspected by
your Audi dealer immed iate ly.
Th e PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; light
should NOT come on ...
The PA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF ~ ; light should
NOT come on when the ign ition is on and an
Airb ag sys tem
adult is sitting in a proper seating pos ition on the
front passenger seat. If the
PASSENGER AIR
BAG OFF~;
light comes on and stays on whi le
driv ing, under these c ircumstances, make sure
that:
- the adult on the front passenger seat is proper­
ly seated on the center of the seat cushion w ith
his or her back up against the backrest and the backrest is not reclined,
- the adult is not taking we ight off the seat by
holding on to the passenger assist handle
above the front passenger door or support ing
their weight on the armrest,
- the safety belt is being properly worn and that
there is not a lot of slack in the safety belt web­
b ing ,
- there are no aftermarket seat covers or cush­
ions or other things (such as blankets) on the
front passenger seat that might cause the ca­ pacitive passenge r detection system to miscal­
culate e lectr ica l capaci ta nce.
' Important safety instructions on
monitoring the Advanced Airbag System
A WARNING
--- If the stat us of the Advanced Airbag System
has changed while the vehicle is moving, the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF '-1; ON @ light
blin ks for about 5 seconds to cat ch the driv­
er 's attent ion . If this happens, a lways stop
as soon as it is sa fe to do so and check the
steps described above .
- If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; light
does not go off when an adult who is not
very small is sitting on the front passenger
seat after tak ing the steps described above,
have the airbag system inspected by your
author ized Audi dealer before t ransporting
anyone on the front passenger seat .
A WARNING ....._
An airbag system that is not functioning prop­
e rly cannot prov ide supplemental protect io n
i n a fronta l crash.

Important information
Introduction
The physical principles of what happens when
your vehicle is in a crash apply also to children
¢ page 190, What happens to occupants not
wearing safety belts?.
But unlike adults and
teenagers, their muscles and bones are not fully
developed. In many respects children are at
greater risk of serious injury in crashes than
adults.
Because children's bodies are not fully devel­
oped, they require restraint systems especially
designed for their size, weight, and body struc­
ture. Many countries and all states of the United
States and provinces of Canada have laws requir­
ing the use of approved child restraint systems
for infants and small children .
In a frontal crash at a speed of 20-35 mph (30-56 km/h) the forces acting on a 13 lbs (6 kg)
infant will be more than 20 times the weight of
the child . This means the weight of the child
would suddenly be more than 260 lbs (120 kg).
Under these conditions, only an appropriate child
restraint properly used can reduce the risk of se­
rious injury. Child restraints, like adult safety
belts, must be used properly to be effective.
Used improperly, they can increase the risk of se­
rious injury in an accident.
If you must install a child restraint on the front
passenger seat in exceptional circumstances, be
sure to read and heed the important information
and warnings ¢
page 197. Infants and other chil­
dren who are properly restrained in an appropri­
ate child restraint that is for their size and age
can benefit from the protection that supplemen­
tal side airbags provide in some kinds of crashes .

Advanced Airbags, and the installation of child
restraints in this chapter .
There is a lot you need to know about the Ad­
vanced Airbags in your vehicle and how they work
when infants and children in child restraints are
on the front passenger seat. Because of the large
amount of important information, we cannot re­
peat it all here . We urge you to read the detailed
information in this owner's manual about airbags
and the Advanced Airbag System in your vehicle
and the very important information about trans­ porting children on the front passenger seat.
Please be sure to heed the WARNINGS -they are
extremely important for your safety and the safe­
ty of your passengers, especially infants and
small children .
A WARNING
All vehicle occupants and especially children
must be restrained properly whenever riding
in a vehicle . An unrestrained or improperly re­
strained child could be injured by striking the
interior or by being ejected from the vehicle
during a sudden maneuver or impact. An un­
restrained or improperly restrained child is al­
so at greater risk of injury or death through
contact with an inflating airbag.
A WARNING
Children on the front seat of any car even with
Advanced Airbags can be seriously injured or
even killed when an airbag inflates . A child in
a rearward-facing child safety seat installed
on the front passenger seat will be seriously
injured and can be killed if the front airbag in­
flates.
- The inflating airbag will hit the child safety
seat or infant carrier with great force and
will smash the child safety seat and child
against the backrest, center armrest, or
door.

Child safety
Advanced front airbag system and children
Your vehicle is equipped with a front "Advanced
Airbag System" in compliance with United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS)
208 as applicable at the time your vehicle was
manufactured.
The Advanced Airbag system in your vehicle has
been certified to meet the "low-risk" require­
ments for 3- and 6-year old children on the pas­
senger side and small adults on the driver side.
The low risk deployment criteria are intended to
reduce the risk of injury through interaction with
the airbag that can occur, for example, by being
too close to the steering wheel and instrument panel when the airbag inflates. In addition, the
system has been certified to comply with the
"suppression" requirements of the Safety Stand­
ard, to turn off the front airbag for infants up to
12 months who are restrained on the front pas­
senger seat in child restraints that are listed in
the Standard .
Even though your vehicle is equipped with an Ad­
vanced Airbag system, a child should always ride
in the seat properly restrained for its age and
size . The airbag on the passenger side makes the
front seat a potentially dangerous place for a
child to ride. The front seat is not the safest place
for a child in a forward-facing child safety seat. It
can be a very dangerous place for an infant or a larger child in a rearward-facing seat .
The vehicle's Advanced Airbag System has a ca­ pacitive passenger detection system in the front
passenger seat cushion that can detect the pres ­
ence of a baby or a child in a child restraint sys­
tem on this seat.
The capacitive passenger detection system regis­
ters the changes that result in an electrical field
when a ch ild, a child restraint, and a baby blanket
are on the front passenger seat. The change in
the measured capacitance due to the presence of
a child, a child restraint, and a baby blanket on
the front passenger seat is related to the child
restraint system resting on the seat. The meas­
ured capacitance of a child restraint system var­ ies depending on the type of system and specific
make and model.

The electrical capacitance of the various types, makes, and models of child restraints specified
by the U.5 .National Highway Traffic Safety Ad­
ministration (NHTSA) in the relevant safety
standard are stored in the Advanced Airbag Sys­
tem control unit together with the capacitances
typical of infants and a 1-year old child . When a
child restraint is used on the front passenger
seat with a typical 1 year-old infant, the Ad­
vanced Airbag System compares the capacitance
measured by the capacitive passenger detection
system with the data stored in the electronic con­
trol unit.
Child restraints and Advanced front airbag
system
Regardless of the child restraint that you use,
make sure that it has been certified to meet Unit­
ed States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards
and has been certified by its manufacturer for
use with an airbag. If in exceptional circumstan­
ces you must use it on the front passenger seat,
carefully read all of the information on child safe­
ty and Advanced Airbags and heed all of the ap­
plicable WARNINGS. Make certain that the child
and child restraint are correctly recognized by the
capacitive passenger detection system in the
front passenger seat, that the front passenger
airbag is turned off, and that the airbag status is
always correctly signaled by the
PASSENGER AIR
BAG OFF~;
light.
Many types and models of child restraints have
been available over the years, new models are in­
troduced regularly incorporating new and im­
proved designs and older models are taken out of
production. Child restraints are not standardized.
Child restraints of the same type typically have
different weights and sizes and different "foot­
prints", the size and shape of the bottom of the
child restraint that sits on the seat, when they
are installed on a vehicle seat. These differences
make it virtually impossible to certify compliance
with the requirements for advanced airbags with each and every child restraint that has ever been
sold in the past or will be sold over the course of
the useful life of your vehicle. ..,.

Child safety
"'Push the child safety seat down with your full
weight to get the safety belt really tight so that
the seat cannot move forward and sideways
more than 1 in (2.5 cm).
Always remember: Even though your vehicle is
equipped with an Advanced Airbag system, a
child should always ride in the seat properly re­
strained for its age and si ze.
A WARNING
Not using a child safety seat, using the wrong
child safety seat or improperly installing a
child restraint increases the risk of serious
personal injury and death.
-All vehicle occupants and especially children
must be restrained properly whenever riding
in a vehicle. An unrestrained or improperly
restrained child could be injured by striking
the interior or by being ejected from the ve­
hicle during a sudden maneuver or impact.
An unrestrained or improperly restrained
child is also at greater risk of injury or death
through contact with an inflating airbag.
- Commercially available child safety seats
are required to comply with U .S. Federal
Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 213
(in Canada CMVSS 213).
- When buying a child restraint, select one
that fits your child and the vehicle.
- Only use child restraint systems that fully
contact the flat portion of the seat cush­
ion. The child restraint must not tip or
lean to either side. Audi does not recom­
mend using child safety seats that rest on
legs or tube-like frames. They do not pro­
vide adequate contact with the seat.
- Always heed all legal requirements per­
taining to the installation and use of child
safety seats and carefully follow the in­
structions provided by the manufacturer
of the seat you are using .
- Never let more than one child occupy a child
safety seat .
- Never let babies or older children ride in a
vehicle while sitting on the lap of another
passenger .

-Holding a child in your arms is never a sub­
stitute for a child restraint system.
- The strongest person could not hold the
child with the forces that exist in an acci­
dent. The child will strike the interior of
the vehicle and can also be struck by the passenger.
- The child and the passenger can also in­
jure each other in an accident.
- Never install rear-facing child safety seats
or infant carriers on the front passenger
seat . A child will be seriously injured and
can be killed when the passenger airbag in­
flates -even with an Advanced Airbag Sys­
tem.
- The inflating airbag will hit the child safety
seat or infant carrier with great force and
will smash the child safety seat and child
against the backrest, center armrest, door
or roof.
- If exceptional circumstances require the use
of a forward-facing child restraint on the
front passenger's seat, the child's safety
and well-being require that the following
special precautions be taken:
- Make sure the forward-facing seat has
been designed and certified by its manu­
facturer for use on a front seat with a pas­
senger front and side airbag.
- Always carefully follow the manufacturer's
instructions provided with the child safety
seat or carrier.
- Always move the front passenger seat into
the rearmost position of the passenger
seat's fore and aft adjustment range, and
as far away from the airbag as possible be­
fore installing the child restraint.
- Always make sure that nothing prevents
the front passenger's seat from being
moved to the rearmost position in its fore
and aft adjustment range.
- Always make sure that the backrest is in
the upright position.
- Never place or use any electrical device
(such as a laptop, CD player, electronic
games device, power inverter or seat heat-
er for child seats) on the front passenger ..,.
