- If the indicator light and the message appear
when the vehicle is stationary or after switch­
ing the ignition on,
check if you can release the
parking brake. If you cannot release the park­
ing brake, see an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility. If you can release
the parking brake and the message still ap­ pears, see an authorized Audi dealer or author­
ized Audi Service Facility immediately to have
the malfunction corrected.
- If the indicator light and message appear
while
driving,
the hill start assist or emergency brak­
ing function may be malfunctioning. It may not
be possible to set the parking brake or release
it once it has been set. Do not park your vehicle
on hills. See an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility for assistance.
(USA models): if the

lights turn on together, have the brake system
checked immediately by an authorized Audi deal­
er or authorized Audi Service Facility

Instruments and indicator lights
A WARNING
-- Read and follow the warnings in
¢ page 233, Working in the engine com­
partment
before opening the hood and
checking the brake fluid level.
- If the brake system indicator light does not
turn off or it turns on while driving, the
brake fluid level in the reservoir is too low,
and this increases the risk of an accident .
Stop the vehicle and do not continue driv­
ing. See an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility for assistance.
- If the brake system indicator light turns on
together with the ABS and ESC indicator
lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function may
be malfunctioning. Functions that stabilize
the vehicle are no longer available. This
could cause the rear of the vehicle to
swerve, which increases the risk that the ve­
hicle will slide. Drive carefully to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility and have the malfunction
corrected.
PARK/(®)f 'i®5, Electromechanical parking
brake

indicator light turns on, the parking brake was
set.

ing brake: caution! Vehicle parked too steep
If the indicator light blinks and the message ap­
pears, there is not enough braking power to se­
cure the vehicle. The brakes have overheated. The
vehicle could roll away even on a small incline.

There is a malfunction in the parking brake. Drive
to an authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility immediately to have the malfunc­
tion corrected.

Intelligent Technology
Wear
Brake pad wear depends largely on the way the
vehicle is driven and on operating conditions.
This is especially true if you are driving frequently
in the city and on curves or with a sporty driving
style.
Operating noise
Noises may occur when braking depending on the
speed, braking force and outside conditions such
as temperature and humidity.
Wet conditions or road salt
I n certain situations, for example after dr iving
through water, in heavy ra in or after washing
your car, the braking effect may be reduced due
to moisture or ice on the brake rotors and brake
pads . The brakes must be "dried" first with a few
careful brake applications.
At higher speeds and with the windshie ld wipers
turned on, the brake pads press against the brake
rotors for a short amount of time . This action,
which is not felt by the driver, happens at regular
intervals and ensures a better reaction time for
the brakes in wet weather .
The braking effect can also be reduced if you are
driving on sa lted roads and you do not apply the
brakes for long periods of time. The layer of salt
on the brake rotors and pads must be worn off
first when the brakes are applied.
Corrosion
Leaving the vehicle parked for long periods of
time, low mi leage and avoiding heavy braking
can contribute to corrosion on the brake rotors
and to dirty brake pads.
If you usually avoid heavy braking or if there is
corrosion present, occasional heavy braking at
h igh speeds is recommended to clean the brake
rotors and
pads¢ &.
Brake system malfunction
If you notice that the brake pedal travel has sud ­
denly increased, then a brake circuit in the dual­
circuit brake system may have malfunctioned. Drive to an authorized Aud i dea ler or authorized
Aud i Serv ice Facility immediately to have the

problem corrected. On the way there, drive with
reduced speed and keep in mind that you will
need a longer distance to stop and you will need
to press the brake pedal harder.
Low brake fluid level
When the brake fluid level is low, malfunctions in
t h e brake system may occur . The brake fluid leve l
is electronically monitored .
Brake booster
The brake booster amplifies the pressure you ap­
ply to the brake pedal.
& WARNING
- New brake pads do not achieve their full
braking effect during the first 250 mi
-
(400 km). They must be "broken in" first .
However, you can compensate for the
slightly reduced braking force by pressing
firm ly on the brake pedal. Avoid heavy brak­
ing during the break-in period.
- On ly app ly the brakes for the purpose of
cleaning the brake system when road and
traffic conditions permit. You must not en­
danger other road users . This increases the
r is k of an accident.
- On steep slopes, reduce the speed and se­
lect a lower gea r or lower selector leve r po­
sition. Drive as lit tl e as possible while press­
ing the brake pedal and avo id putting yo ur
left foot on the brake pedal while driv ing .
This could ca use the brakes to overheat and
impair the efficiency of th e brakes.
- Do not let the brakes "grind" by always
keeping your foot on the brake pedal. This
can cause the brakes to overheat, increase
wear and increase braking distance unneces­
sarily.
- Certain weather and operating conditions such as driving through water, dr iv in g in
heavy rain or driv ing after wash ing your ve­
h icle can impair the effectiveness of the
brakes. In the winter, ice may build up on
the brake pads, rotors and drums. Check
these compon ents by braking carefully. Ap­
plying the brakes carefully several times
dries the brakes and removes ice build-up.

- Keep children away from the engine com ­
partment.
- Never spill fluids on a hot engine . These flu ­
ids (such as the freeze protection contained
in the coolant) can catch fire.
- Avoid short circuits in the e lectrica l system,
especially to the battery.
- When working in the engine compartment,
remember that the radiator fan can switch
on even if the ign ition is switched off, which
increases the risk of personal in jury.
- Never open the cap on the coolant expan­
sion tank when the eng ine is warm. The
cooling system is under pressure.
- To protect your face, hands, and arms from hot steam or coolant, cover the cap with a
large cloth when opening.
- Do not remove the engine cover under any circumstances. This increases the risk of
burns .
- If tests need to be performed w ith the en­
gine ru nning, there is additional danger due
to moving components (such as the ribbed
belt, a lter nator and radiator fa n) and from
the high-voltage ign it io n system.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal inadver­
tent ly if a gear is selected when the veh icle
is sta tionary and the eng ine is ru nning. Oth­
erwise, the veh icle w ill start to move imme ­
diately and t his co uld r esult in an a ccid en t.
- Pay attention to the fo llow ing warnings list­
ed whe n wo rk on the fuel system or on the
electri cal eq uipment is requ ired.
- Do not smoke.
- Never work near open flames.
- Always have a working fire extinguisher
nearby.
- All work on the battery or e lectrica l system
in yo ur vehicle can res ult in injuries, chemi­
ca l burns, accidents or burns. Because of
t h is, all wor k must be performed
only by an
autho rized Aud i dealer or authorized Aud i
Service Facility .
- To reduce the risk of electric shock and in­
jury , never touch the following components

when t he engine is runni ng or is being start ­
ed:
- Ig nition cable
- Other compone nts in the electron ic high-
vo ltage ig nition system
- If you must check or perform work on the
eng ine wh ile it is ru nning:
- Set the pa rking brake and p lace the selec ­
tor lever in the P (par k) position fi rst .
- Alw ays proceed w ith ext reme cau tion so
t h at clothing, jewelry or long hair do not
become ca ught in the radiator fan, fan
belt or other moving components or do
not come into contact with hot compo ­
nents. Tie back long hair before begin ning
work and do not wear clothing that can
hang dow n into the eng ine .
- Lim it your exposure to exhaust and chemi­
cals to as short a time as possible
