Display.
The selected time is stored for the profile curâ
rently in use.
Warning with braking function
Note Adapting your speed and driving style
The warning does not relieve the driver
of the responsibility to adapt his or her driving
speed and style to the traffic conditions.â
Display
If a collision with a recognized vehicle is immiâ
nent a warning symbol appears in the instruâ
ment cluster and in the Head-Up Display.
SymbolMeasureThe vehicle lights up red: prewarnâ
ing.
Brake and increase distance. The vehicle flashes red and an
acoustic signal sounds: acute warnâ
ing.
You are requested to intervene by
braking or make an evasive maneuâ
ver.
Prewarning
This warning is issued, e.g., when there is the
impending danger of a collision or the distance
to the vehicle ahead is too small.
The driver must intervene actively when there
is a prewarning.
Acute warning with braking function
Warning of the imminent danger of a collision
when the vehicle approaches another object at
a relatively high differential speed.
The driver must intervene actively when there
is an acute warning. If necessary, the driver is
assisted by a minor automatic braking interâ
vention in a possible risk of collision.
Acute warnings can also be triggered without
previous prewarning.
Braking intervention
The warning prompts the driver himself/herself
to react. During a warning, the maximum brakâ
ing force is used. Premise for the brake boosâ
ter is sufficiently quick and hard stepping on
the brake pedal. The system can assist with
some braking intervention if there is risk of a
collision. At low speeds vehicles may thus
come to a complete stop.
Manual transmission: During a braking interâ
vention up to a complete stop, the engine may
be shut down.
The braking intervention is executed only if
DSC Dynamic Stability Control is switched on
and Dynamic Traction Control DTC is actiâ
vated.
The braking intervention can be interrupted by
stepping on the accelerator pedal or by acâ
tively moving the steering wheel.
Object detection can be restricted. Limitations
of the detection range and functional restricâ
tions are to be considered.
Tow-starting and towing
For towing the vehicle turn, switch off the
Intelligent Safety systems; otherwise malfuncâ
tions of the individual braking systems might
lead to accidents.âSeite 109SafetyControls109

Braking intervention The detection of objects can be influenced by
technical system limitations, e. g. pedestrians
or stationary objects. Limitations of the detecâ
tion range and functional restrictions are to be
considered.
The warning prompts the driver himself/herself
to react. During a warning, the maximum brakâ
ing force is used. Premise for the brake boosâ
ter is sufficiently quick and hard stepping on
the brake pedal. The system can assist with
automatic braking intervention if there is risk of
a collision. The intervention can bring the vehiâ
cle to a complete stop.
Manual transmission: During a braking interâ
vention up to a complete stop, the engine may
be shut down.
The braking intervention is executed only if
DSC Dynamic Stability Control is switched on
and Dynamic Traction Control DTC is actiâ
vated.
Above approx. 130 mph/210 km/h the braking
intervention occurs as a brief braking pressure.
No automatic delay occurs.
The braking intervention can be interrupted by
stepping on the accelerator pedal or by acâ
tively moving the steering wheel.
Tow-starting and towing
For towing the vehicle turn, switch off the
Intelligent Safety systems; otherwise malfuncâ
tions of the individual braking systems might
lead to accidents.â
System limits Be alert
Due to system limitations, warnings may
be not issued at all, or may be issued late or
improperly. Therefore, always be alert and
ready to intervene; otherwise, there is the risk
of an accident.â
Detection range The system's detection potential is limited.
Thus a warning might not be issued or be isâ
sued late.
E. g. the following situations may not be deâ
tected:âˇSlow moving vehicles when you approach
them at high speed.âˇVehicles that suddenly swerve in front of
you, or sharply decelerating vehicles.âˇVehicles with an unusual rear appearance.âˇTwo-wheeled vehicles ahead of you.Seite 112ControlsSafety112

5 ft/1.50 m.
To ensure full functionality:
âˇDo not cover sensors, e.g., with stickers,
bicycle racks and the like.âˇKeep the sensors clean and free of ice.âˇWhen using high-pressure washers, do not
spray the sensors for long periods and
maintain a distance of at least 12 in/30 cm.
Hints
Personal responsibility
Even an active system does not relieve
the driver from personal responsibility while
driving.
Technically the system has its limits, it cannot
independently react to all traffic situations.
Monitor your driving, be on the alert, observe
the vehicle surroundings and other traffic and
react when needed - risk of accident.â
Avoid driving fast with PDC
Avoid approaching an object too fast.
Avoid driving off fast while PDC is not yet acâ
tive.
For technical reasons, the system may otherâ
wise be too late in issuing a warning.â

Display
Signal tones When approaching an object, an intermittent
sound indicates the position of the object. E. g.
if an object is detected to the left rear of the
vehicle, a signal tone sounds from the left rear
speaker.
The shorter the distance to the object, the shorter the intervals.
If the distance to a detected object is less than
approx. 10 in/25 cm, a continuous tone is
sounded.
With front PDC: if objects are located both in
front of and behind the vehicle, an alternating
continuous signal is sounded.
The signal tone is switched off:
âˇWhen the vehicle moves away from an obâ
ject by more than approx. 4 in/10 cm.âˇWhen selector lever position P is engaged
on vehicles with Steptronic transmission.Seite 134ControlsDriving comfort134

Avoid high engine speeds
As a rule: driving at low engine speeds lowers
fuel consumption and reduces wear.
Use 1st gear to get the vehicle moving. Startâ
ing with the 2nd gear, accelerate rapidly. When
accelerating, shift up before reaching high enâ
gine speeds.
When you reach the desired speed, shift into
the highest applicable gear and drive with the
engine speed as low as possible and at a conâ
stant speed.
If necessary, observe the gear shift indicator of
the vehicle, refer to page 85.
Use coasting
When approaching a red light, take your foot
off the accelerator and let the vehicle coast to
a halt.
For going downhill take your foot off the accelâ
erator and let the vehicle roll.
The flow of fuel is interrupted while coasting.
Switch off the engine during longer stops
Switch off the engine during longer stops, e.g.,
at traffic lights, railroad crossings or in traffic
congestion.
Auto Start/Stop function The Auto Start/Stop function of your vehicle
automatically switches off the engine during a
stop.
If the engine is switched off and then restarted
rather than leaving the engine running conâ
stantly, fuel consumption and emissions are
reduced. Savings can begin within a few secâ
onds of switching off the engine.
In addition, fuel consumption is also deterâ
mined by other factors, such as driving style, road conditions, maintenance or environmental
factors.
Switch off any functions that
are not currently needed
Functions such as seat heating and the rear
window defroster require a lot of energy and
reduce the range, especially in city and stop-
and-go traffic.
Reel off these functions if they are not needed. The ECO PRO driving program supports the
energy conserving use of comfort features.
These functions are automatically deactivated
partially or completely.
Have maintenance carriedout
Have vehicles maintained regularly to achieve
optimal vehicle efficiency and operating life.
The maintenance should be carried out by
your service center.
Also note the BMW Maintenance System, refer
to page 207.
ECO PRO
The concept ECO PRO supports a driving style that saves
on fuel consumption. For this purpose, the enâ
gine control and comfort features, e. g. the cliâ
mate control output, are adjusted.
Under certain conditions the engine is autoâ
matically decoupled from the transmission in
the D selector lever position. The vehicle conâ
tinues traveling with the engine idling to reâ
duce fuel consumption. Selector lever position
D remains engaged.
In addition, context-sensitive instructions are
displayed to assist with an optimized fuel conâ
sumption driving style.Seite 177Saving fuelDriving tips177

CareVehicle features and optionsThis chapter describes all standard, country-
specific and optional features offered with the
series. It also describes features that are not
necessarily available in your car, e. g., due to
the selected options or country versions. This
also applies to safety-related functions and
systems.
Car washes
General information
Regularly remove foreign objects such as
leaves in the area below the windshield when
the hood is raised.
Wash your vehicle frequently, particularly in
winter. Intense soiling and road salt can damâ
age the vehicle.
Hints Steam jets or high-pressure washers
When using steam jets or high-pressure
washers, hold them a sufficient distance away
and use a maximum temperature of
140 â/60 â.
If the vehicle has a glass sunroof, ensure that a
distance of at least 31.5 inches/80 cm is mainâ
tained. Holding them too close or using excesâ
sively high pressures or temperatures can
cause damage or preliminary damage that may
then lead to long-term damage.
Follow the user's manual for the high-pressure
washer.â
Cleaning sensors/cameras with high-
pressure washers
When using high-pressure washers, do not
spray the exterior sensors and cameras, e.g.,
Park Distance Control, for extended periods oftime and only from a distance of at least
12 in/30 cm.â
Automatic car washes
HintsâˇGive preference to cloth car washes or
those that use soft brushes in order to
avoid paint damage.âˇMake sure that the wheels and tires are not
damaged by the transport mechanisms.âˇFold in the exterior mirrors; otherwise, they
may be damaged, depending on the width
of the vehicle.âˇDeactivate the rain sensor, refer to
page 71, to avoid unintentional wiper actiâ
vation.âˇIn some cases, an unintentional alarm can
be triggered by the interior motion sensor
of the alarm system. Follow the instrucâ
tions on avoiding an unintentional alarm,
refer to page 46.
Guide rails in car washes
Avoid car washes with guide rails higher
than 4 in/10 cm; otherwise, the vehicle body
could be damaged.â
Before driving into a car wash In order to ensure that the vehicle can roll in a
car wash, take the following steps:
Manual transmission:
1.Drive into the car wash.2.Shift to neutral.3.Switch the engine off.4.Switch on the ignition.
Steptronic transmission:
1.Drive into the car wash.Seite 227CareMobility227
