The fully automatic convertible top
*
Do not reach into the convertible top
mechanism during opening and closing.
Keep children away from the moving
parts of the convertible top during oper-
ation.
The automatic sequence will be inter-
rupted immediately if you release the
button that operates the top. The
sequence can be continued in the
desired direction by pressing this
button.<
After having been stored for an
extended period of time in the
convertible top compartment Ñ e. g.
during the winter months because the
hardtop
* was being used Ñ you may
have to support the convertible top by
hand when closing it for the first time:
If the convertible top should halt just
before the closing phase is completed,
press against the front section of the
convertible top frame from the outside to
help the closing process along. Continue
pressing the switch while doing so until
the top starts up again on its own.<
Opening and closing1 Closing
2 Opening
Continue pressing the button for oper-
ating the convertible top until the
opening or closing process has ended.
The side windows will lower slightly
while it is being opened. When the top
is being closed, the side windows will
also close if you continue pressing the
button after the convertible top has
finished closing.
The red indicator lamp will light up
while the convertible top is in motion. It
will keep blinking after you release the
button, if the opening or closing proce-
dure was not completed properly.46cus043
The convertible top cannot be moved if
the convertible top compartment panel
is raised. In this case, the yellow indi-
cator lamp will light up and stay on
when the button is pressed, indicating
that it is not possible to complete a
convertible top operation.
Flip down the convertible top compart-
ment panel; see page 41.
If the opening or closing process
has been interrupted, the convert-
ible top will remain in that position for
15 minutes
.
After that, the convertible top can be
moved again and, if it is an emergency
situation, you may need to help the top
along manually. This can also be done
in ignition key position 0.
The luggage compartment cannot be
opened while the convertible top is in
motion.
When operating the convertible top, the
windows will lower slightly when you
press on the switch, and after the
opening operation has finished, they
will move up again if you continue
holding the switch down for more than
2 seconds after the indicator lamp has
gone out.<

While the convertible top is in
motion, the side windows will
lower slightly. Do not close the side
power windows using the switches if
the convertible top has been inter-
rupted while it is in motion.
In certain cases, the luggage compart-
ment lid cannot be opened if the
opening or closing operation has been
interrupted.
Never store the convertible top while it
is wet to avoid permanent damage from
moisture.
While the convertible top is in motion,
the rear window will move toward the
passenger compartment and will gently
press the heads of the passengers
sitting in the rear forward. Normally, this
is not dangerous. To avoid possibly
being pinched, passengers in the back
seat should lean their heads slightly
forward while the convertible top is in
motion.<
Convenient operation from the
driver-side door lock>To open: with the door closed, turn
and hold the key in the "Unlock" posi-
tion.
>To close: with the door closed, turn
and hold the key to the "Lock" posi-
tion.
Letting go of the key will stop the
motion.
In order to keep the closing process in
view, it is not possible to use the
convenient operation via the remote
control for safety reasons.
At higher speeds, the ensuing
vacuum in the passenger
compartment can cause the convertible
top to begin fluttering. Increase the air
supply via the ventilation controls so
that a vacuum does not occur in the
vehicle.<
The wind deflector keeps air movement
in the passenger compartment to a
minimum, thus providing you with a
pleasant drive, even at higher speeds.
The wind deflector comes in a protec-
tive sleeve, and because of its slim
dimensions, can be easily stored in the
luggage compartment.Installing1 Take the wind deflector out of its
protective sleeve.

BMW Universal Transmitter
*
The concept The BMW Universal Transmitter
replaces up to three handheld transmit-
ters of different devices such as
garage-door openers, alarm systems,
or door locking systems. The BMW
Universal Transmitter recognizes and
"learns" the transmitted signal of each
of the original handheld transmitters.
The signal of an original handheld
transmitter can be programmed on one
of the three channel keys. Following
that, each of the devices can be actu-
ated with the appropriately-
programmed channel key. The indicator
lamp flashes to confirm transmission of
the signal.
If the vehicle is sold, the memory of the
channel keys should be cleared as
described on page 110.
During programming and before
every remote actuation of a
programmed device by the BMW
Universal Transmitter, check to be sure
that there are no persons, animals or
objects within the actuation range of
the device in order to prevent possible
injuries or damage. Also, comply with
the safety precautions of the original
handheld transmitter.<
To Canadian residents:
During programming, your hand-
held transmitter may automatically stop
transmitting after two seconds. This
may not be long enough to program the
BMW Universal Transmitter. If you are
programming from one of these hand-
held transmitters, the Universal Trans-
mitter's light may begin to flash in a
series of double-blinks. If this occurs,
continue to hold the button of the
Universal Transmitter while you reacti-
vate your hand-held transmitter. You
may have to repeat this function several
times while programming.<
Before programming, read the
"User information" section on
page 110.<
Original handheld transmitter
If this symbol is present on the
packaging or in the instructions
of the original handheld trans-
mitter, it may be assumed that this
handheld transmitter is compatible with
the BMW Universal Transmitter.
Checking for the conversion code To determine whether the original
handheld transmitter is provided with a
conversion-code system, you may
either read the instructions for the orig-
inal handheld transmitter or program a
channel key as described on the next
page (left-hand column under
"Programming").
Then press and hold the programmed
channel key of the BMW Universal
Transmitter. If the indicator lamp of the
BMW Universal Transmitter flashes for
two seconds and then comes on
steadily, the original handheld trans-
mitter is provided with a conversion-
code system. With a conversion code
system, program the channel keys as
described on the next page (right-hand
column under "Programming a hand-
held transmitter with conversion code").

Storage facilities
Clearing the channel keys
Read and comply with the safety
precautions on page 108.<
The memory of individual channel keys
cannot be deleted. However, the three
channel keys can be cleared together
as follows:
>Press and hold both outside keys of
the BMW Universal Transmitter until
the indicator lamp flashes, and then
release them.
All of the channel keys are cleared.
User informationDo not use this BMW Universal Trans-
mitter with any garage door opener that
lacks safety "stop" and "reverse"
features as required by federal safety
standards (this includes any garage
door opener model manufactured
before April 1, 1982).
This device complies with Section 15 of
the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to
the following two conditions: as defined
in the regulations, this device must not
emit harmful interference, and must be
shielded against interference from
external sources to prevent unautho-
rized or inadvertent activation.To
open the storage compartment in
the front center armrest: press the
button (arrow) and lift upward.
You will find additional storage
compartments in the doors and in the
center console above the ashtray.
Storage nets are located on the back-
rests of the front seats.460us043

Roof-mounted luggage rack for the hardtop
*
AnchorsAccess to the anchors:
To open the cover (arrow), please use
the tool included with the roof-rack
system.
A special roof-rack system is available
for your BMW as an optional extra.
Please comply with the precautions
included with the installation instruc-
tions.
Because roof racks raise the center of
gravity of the vehicle when loaded, they
exercise a major effect on its handling
and steering response. You should
therefore always remember not to
exceed the approved roof weight, the
approved gross vehicle weight or the 46cde097
axle loads when loading the rack. Perti-
nent specifications are listed under
"Technical Data," page 198.
Make sure that the load is not too
heavy, and distribute it evenly.
Always load the heaviest pieces first (on
the bottom). Be sure that objects do not
project into the opening path of the
luggage compartment lid.
Secure the roof luggage correctly and
securely to prevent it from shifting or
being lost during driving (danger to
following traffic).
Drive smoothly and avoid sudden
acceleration or braking. Do not corner
at high speeds.
The roof load increases aerodynamic
resistance, which in turn increases fuel
consumption and places additional
stress on the vehicle itself.

Hardtop
*
It is not necessary to remove the fabric
top even in the winter, when the
hardtop is generally in constant use.
But you can remove it at any time
without difficulty. Before the fabric top
is stored in the convertible top well, it
must be absolutely dry in order to avoid
water spots and mildew from forming.
The hardtop offers reading lamps and
clothing hooks that can be used by
pressing lightly. In addition, a roof-rack
assembly is possible. In this regard,
please contact your BMW center.
When hanging clothing from the
hooks, be sure that they do not
obstruct the driver's vision. Do not hang
heavy objects on the hooks. If you do
so, they could cause personal injury
during braking or evasive maneuvers.<
Two persons are required for installa-
tion or removal. Work with extreme
caution in order to avoid paint damage
and damage to the body or hardtop.
To facilitate hardtop installation or
removal, you can obtain a specially
designed hardtop lift
* or hardtop cart
*
at your BMW center.
Storing
Storing the hardtop on the floor:
push the styrofoam block
provided with the hardtop forward to its
center. The arrow on the styrofoam
block must be pointing upward.<

Coolant Brake fluidAdding coolant Wait until the engine cools before
removing the cap from the expansion
tank. The needle of the coolant temper-
ature gauge in the instrument cluster
must be located in the blue zone. If it
is not, there is a danger of scalding.
1 Turn the cap slightly counterclock-
wise in order to allow accumulated
pressure to escape. Then open.
2 If the coolant is low, slowly add
coolant until the correct level is
reached Ð do not overfill.
The coolant is a mixture of water and
extended-duty antifreeze with corrosion
inhibitor. Always maintain the
prescribed all-season 50:50 mixture
ratio for year-round protection against
internal corrosion. No other additives
are required.
Replace the coolant every four years. The brake warning lamp comes on
when the parking brake has been
released:
Check the brake fluid level and if
necessary, top up to the "MAX" mark.
For adding brake fluid or for deter-
mining and correcting the cause of
brake fluid loss, consult your BMW
center. Your BMW center is familiar
with the specifications for factory-
approved brake fluids (DOT 4).
Brake fluid loss can result in extended
pedal travel. Comply with the informa-
tion provided on page 126.
460de128
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, that is,
it absorbs moisture from the air
over time.
In order to ensure the safety and reli-
ability of the brake system, have the
brake fluid changed every two years by
an authorized BMW center. Refer also
to the Service and Warranty Information
Booklet (US models) or the Warranty
and Service Guide Booklet (Canadian
models). Brake fluid is hazardous to
health and damages the vehicle's paint.
You should always store it in its original
container and in a location that is
inaccessible to children.
Do not spill the fluid and do not fill the
brake fluid reservoir beyond the "MAX"
mark. The brake fluid could ignite upon
contact with hot engine parts and
cause serious burns.<
Comply with the applicable
environmental laws regulating
the disposal of brake fluid.<
