rests, ensure that the area of movement of the backrests is clear. Ensure that no one is loā
cated in or reaches into the area of movement
of the rear seat backrests. Otherwise, injury or
damage may result.ā
Ensuring the stability of the child seat
When installing child restraint systems,
make sure that the child seat is securely fasā
tened to the backrest of the seat. Angle and
headrest of the backrest might need to be adā
justed or possibly be removed. Make sure that
all backrests are securely locked. Otherwise
the stability of the child seat can be affected,
and there is an increased risk of injury because
of unexpected movement of the rear seat backrest.ā

Do not remove the heat shields installed and
never apply undercoating to them. Make sure
that flammable materials, e. g. hay, leaves,
grass, etc. do not come in contact with the hot
exhaust system while driving, while in idle poā
sition mode, or when parked. Such contact
could lead to a fire, resulting in an increased
risk of serious personal injury as well as propā
erty damage.
Do not touch hot exhaust pipes; otherwise,
there is a danger of getting burned.ā
Mobile communication devices in the
vehicle
Mobile communication devices in the veā
hicle
It is not recommended to use mobile phones,
such as mobile phones, in the vehicle interior
without a direct connection to an external aerā
ial. Otherwise, the vehicle's electronics and
mobile communication devices can interfere
with each other. In addition, there is no assurā
ance that the radiation generated during transā
mission will be conducted away from the vehiā
cle interior.ā
Hydroplaning Hydroplaning
When driving on wet or slushy roads, reā
duce your speed to prevent hydroplaning.ā
On wet or slushy roads, a wedge of water can
form between the tires and road surface.
This phenomenon is referred to as hydroplanā
ing. It is characterized by a partial or complete
loss of contact between the tires and the road
surface, ultimately undermining your ability to
steer and brake the vehicle.Driving through water
Observe water level and speed
Do not exceed the maximum water level
and maximum speed; otherwise, the vehicle's
engine, the electrical systems and the transā
mission may be damaged.ā
Drive though calm water only and only if it is
not deeper than 9.8 inches/25 cm and at this
height, no faster than walking speed, up to
3 mph/5 km/h.
Braking safely
Your vehicle is equipped with ABS as a standā
ard feature.
Applying the brakes fully is the most effective
way of braking in situations needed.
Steering is still responsive. You can still avoid
any obstacles with a minimum of steering efā
fort.
Pulsation of the brake pedal and sounds from
the hydraulic circuits indicate that ABS is in its
active mode.
In certain braking situations, the perforated
brake discs can cause functional problems.
However, this has no effect on the performā
ance and operational reliability of the brake.
Objects within the range of movement
of the pedals
No objects in the area around the pedals
Keep floor mats, carpets, and any other
objects out of the pedal area; otherwise, the
function of the pedals could be impeded while
driving and create the risk of an accident.
Do not place additional floor mats over existing
mats or other objects.
Only use floor mats that have been approved
for the vehicle and can be properly attached to
floor.
Ensure that the floor mats are securely fasā
tened again after they were removed for cleanā
ing, e.g.āSeite 169Things to remember when drivingDriving tips169

LoadingVehicle features and options
This chapter describes all standard, country-
specific and optional features offered with the
series. It also describes features that are not
necessarily available in your car, e. g., due to
the selected options or country versions. This
also applies to safety-related functions and
systems.
Hints Overloading the vehicle
To avoid exceeding the approved caā
pacity of the tires, never overload the vehicle.
Overloading can lead to overheating and inā
creases the rate at which damage develops inā
side the tires. This could result in a sudden
loss of tire inflation pressure.ā
No fluids in the cargo area
Make sure that fluids do not leak into the
cargo area; otherwise, the vehicle may be damā
aged.ā
Heavy and hard objects
Do not stow any heavy and hard objects
in the car's interior without securing them; othā
erwise, they may present a danger to occuā
pants, e.g., during braking and evasive maneuā
vers.ā
Loading with hardtop open
Before opening the hardtop, fold down
the cargo area partition and make sure the
loading is correct. Otherwise, parts of the hardā
top can be damaged.āDetermining the load limit1.Locate the following statement on your veā
hicleās placard:ā·The combined weight of occupants
and cargo should never exceed XXX kg
or YYY lbs. Otherwise, damage to the
vehicle and unstable driving situations
may result.2.Determine the combined weight of the
driver and passengers that will be riding in
your vehicle.3.Subtract the combined weight of the driver
and passengers from XXX kilograms or
YYY pounds.4.The resulting figure equals the available
amount of cargo and luggage load caā
pacity.
For example, if the YYY amount equals
1,000 lbs and there will be four 150 lbs
passengers in your vehicle, the amount of
available cargo and luggage load capacity
is 400 lbs: 1,000 lbs minus 600 lbs =
400 lbs.5.Determine the combined weight of lugā
gage and cargo being loaded on the vehiā
cle. That weight may not safely exceed the
available cargo and luggage load capacity
calculated in Step 4.Seite 171LoadingDriving tips171

Load
The maximum load is the sum of the weight of
the occupants and the cargo.
The greater the weight of the occupants, the
less cargo that can be transported.
Stowing cargo
ā·Cover sharp edges and corners on the
cargo.ā·Heavy cargo: stow as far forward as possiā
ble, directly behind and at the bottom of
the rear passenger seat backrests.ā·Very heavy cargo: when the rear seat is not
occupied, secure each of the outer safety
belts in the opposite buckle.ā·If necessary, fold down the rear backrests
to stow cargo.ā·Use loading aid, refer to page 160, for easā
ier loading.ā·Using the cargo area, refer to page 47.ā·Do not stack cargo above the top edge of
the backrests.Securing cargo
Lashing eyes in the cargo area
To secure the cargo there are four lashing
eyes in the cargo area.
Floor net
The floor net can also be used to Secure the
load and to store small parts.
Hook the floor net into the fittings in the cargo
area floor.
Securing cargo
ā·Smaller and lighter items: secure with reā
taining straps or draw straps.ā·Larger and heavy objects: secure with
cargo straps.
Attach the cargo straps, retaining straps or
draw straps to the lashing eyes in the cargo
area.
