Unattended vehicle
Do not leave the vehicle unattended with
the engine running; doing so poses a risk of
danger.
Before leaving the vehicle with the engine runâ
ning, set the parking brake and place the transâ
mission in selector lever position P or N to preâ
vent the vehicle from moving.â
Repeated starting in quick succession
Avoid trying to start the vehicle repeatâ
edly and in quick succession. Otherwise, the
fuel is not burned or is inadequately burned,
posing a risk of overheating and damage to the
catalytic converter.â
The combustion engine is started with Actiâ
vate drive, refer to page 76, readiness under
the following conditions:âˇThe drive system is not at operating temâ
perature.âˇThe temperature of the hybrid system is
too high.âˇThe high-voltage battery has an insuffiâ
cient charge.
Driving away
1.Activate drive readiness.2.Engage selector lever position D, M/S or R.3.Release the parking brake.4.Drive away.
Deactivating drive readiness
After stopping the vehicle:
1.Engage selector lever position P.2.Press the Start/Stop button.3.Set the parking brake.
After parking the vehicle, you may hear noises
due to operation of the hybrid system, such as
for cooling of the high-voltage battery.
Hints
Take the remote control with you
Take the remote control with you when
leaving the vehicle so that children, e.g., canâ
not start the engine.â
Apply parking brake and further secure
the vehicle if needed.
Set the parking brake firmly when parking; othâ
erwise, the vehicle could roll. On steep upward
and downward inclines, further secure the veâ
hicle, e.g., by turning the steering wheel in the
direction of the curb.â
Before driving into a car wash So that the vehicle can roll into a car wash obâ
serve instructions for going into an automatic
car wash, refer to page 234.
Auto Start/Stop function
The concept The Auto Start/Stop function helps save fuel.
The system switches off the combustion enâ
gine when conditions for electric driving have
been met. The ignition or drive readiness reâ
mains switched on.
The tachometer registers 0 rpm. If necessary,
the combustion engine starts automatically.
The combustion engine is also stopped during
the trip when coasting or braking. This driving
condition, in which the vehicle is traveling withâ
out power and energy recovery is not active, is
referred to as coasting, refer to page 78.
Note
The combustion engine is not switched off auâ
tomatically in the following situations:âˇThe combustion engine is not at operating
temperature.Seite 77DrivingControls77

FuelVehicle features and optionsThis chapter describes all standard, country-
specific and optional features offered with the
series. It also describes features that are not
necessarily available in your car, e. g., due to
the selected options or country versions. This
also applies to safety-related functions and
systems.
Fuel recommendation
Note General fuel quality
Even fuels that conform to the specificaâ
tions can be of low quality. This may cause enâ
gine problems, for instance poor engine start-
up behavior, poor handling and/or poor
performance. Switch gas stations or use a
brand name fuel with a higher octane rating.â
Gasoline
For the best fuel efficiency, the gasoline
should be sulfur-free or very low in sulfur conâ
tent.
Fuels that are marked on the gas pump as conâ
taining metal must not be used.
Refuel only with unleaded gasoline withâ
out metallic additives.
Do not refuel with any leaded gasoline or gasoâ
line with metallic additives, e. g. manganese or
iron, as this can cause permanent damage to
the catalytic converter and other compoâ
nents.â
Fuels with a maximum ethanol content of
10 %, i. e., E10, may be used for refueling.
Ethanol should satisfy the following quality
standards:
US: ASTM 4806âxxCAN: CGSB-3.511âxx
xx: comply with the current standard in each
case.
Do not use a fuel with a higher percentâ
age of ethanol
Do not use a fuel with a higher ethanol perâ
centage than recommended or one with other
types of alcohol, e.g. M5 to M100; otherwise
this could damage the engine and fuel supply
system.â
Recommended fuel grade BMW recommends AKI 91.
Minimum fuel grade
BMW recommends AKI 89.
Minimum fuel grade
Do not use any gasoline below the miniâ
mum fuel grade as this may impair engine perâ
formance.â
If you use gasoline with this minimum AKI Ratâ
ing, the engine may produce knocking sounds
when starting at high outside temperatures.
This has no effect on the engine life.
Fuel quality
The use of poor-quality fuels may result
in harmful engine deposits or damage. Addiâ
tionally, problems relating to drivability, startâ
ing and stalling, especially under certain enviâ
ronmental conditions such as high ambient
temperature and high altitude, may occur.
If drivability problems are encountered, we recâ
ommend switching to a high quality gasoline
brand and a higher octane grade â AKI numâ
ber â for a few tank fills. To avoid harmful enâ
gine deposits, it is highly recommended to
purchase gasoline from BP or Top Tier retailâ

correspondingly trained personnel and other
authorized persons. Otherwise, use may result
in operating problems for the vehicle.â
Position
There is an OBD socket on the driver's side for
checking the primary components in the vehiâ
cle's emissions.
Emissions
âˇThe warning lamp lights up:
Emissions are deteriorating. Have
the vehicle checked as soon as
possible.âˇThe warning lamp flashes under certain
circumstances:
This indicates that there is excessive misâ
firing in the engine.
Reduce the vehicle speed and have the
system checked immediately; otherwise,
serious engine misfiring within a brief peâ
riod can seriously damage emission conâ
trol components, in particular the catalytic
converter.Seite 220MobilityMaintenance220
