SafetyVehicle equipment
All standard, country-specific and optional
equipment that is offered in the model series is
described in this chapter. Therefore, equipmentis also described that is not available in a vehicle,
e. g., because of the selected optional equipâ
ment or country variant. This also applies for
safety-related functions and systems.
Airbags
1Front airbag, driver2Front airbag, front passenger3Head airbag4Side airbag5Knee airbagsFront airbags
Front airbags help protect the driver and front
passenger by responding to frontal impacts in
which safety belts alone cannot provide adeâ
quate restraint.
Side airbags
In a lateral impact, the side airbag supports the
side of the body in the chest and lap area.Head airbags
In a lateral impact, the head airbag supports the
head.
In the event of a rollover accident, the head airâ
bag can help to prevent the person from being
thrown out of the vehicle.Seite 91SafetyControls91

Knee airbag
The knee airbag supports the legs in a frontal
impact.
Protective action
Airbags are not triggered in every impact situaâ
tion, e.g., in less severe accidents or rear-end
collisions.
Information on how to ensure the optimal
protective effect of the airbagsâˇKeep at a distance from the airbags.âˇAlways grasp the steering wheel on the
steering wheel rim, holding your hands at
the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions, to keep
the danger of injury to your hands or arms as
low as possible if the airbag is triggered.âˇThere should be no people, animals, or obâ
jects between an airbag and a person.âˇDo not use the cover of the front airbag on
the front passenger side as a storage area.âˇKeep the dashboard and window on the
front passenger side clear, i.e., do not cover
with adhesive labels or coverings, and do not
attach holders such as for navigation instruâ
ments and mobile phones.âˇMake sure that the front passenger is sitting
correctly, i.e., keeps his or her feet and legs
in the footwell; otherwise, leg injuries can
occur if the front airbag is triggered.âˇDo not place slip covers, seat cushions or
other objects on the front passenger seat
that are not approved specifically for seats
with integrated side airbags.âˇDo not hang pieces of clothing, such as jackâ
ets, over the backrests.âˇMake sure that occupants keep their heads
away from the side airbag and do not rest
against the head airbag; otherwise, injuries
can occur if the airbags are triggered.âˇDo not remove the airbag restraint system.âˇDo not remove the steering wheel.âˇDo not apply adhesive materials to the airâ
bag cover panels, cover them or modify
them in any way.âˇNever modify either the individual compoâ
nents or the wiring in the airbag system. This
also applies to steering wheel covers, the
dashboard, the seats, the roof pillars and the
sides of the headliner.â
Even when all instructions are followed closely,
injury from contact with the airbags cannot be
ruled out in certain situations.
The ignition and inflation noise may lead to
short-term and, in most cases, temporary hearâ
ing impairment in sensitive individuals.
In the case of a malfunction, deactivation
and after triggering of the airbags
Do not touch the individual components immeâ
diately after the system has been triggered; othâ
erwise, there is the danger of burns.
Only have the airbags checked, repaired or disâ
mantled and the airbag generator scrapped by
your service center or a workshop that has the
necessary authorization for handling explosives.
Non-professional attempts to service the sysâ
tem could lead to failure in an emergency or unâ
desired triggering of the airbag, either of which
could result in injury.â
Warnings and information on the airbags are
also found on the sun visors.
Functional readiness of the airbag
system
When the ignition is switch on, the warnâ
ing lamp in the instrument cluster lights
up briefly and thereby indicates the opâ
erational readiness of the entire airbag system
and the belt tensioner.
Airbag system malfunctioning
âˇWarning lamp does not come on when the
ignition is turned on.âˇThe warning lamp lights up continuously.Seite 92ControlsSafety92

The rear seat backrest is divided into two parts
at a ratio of 60 to 40.
If equipped with through-loading system: the
rear seat backrest is divided in the ratio 40â20â
40. The sides and the middle section can be
folded down separately.
Danger of pinching
Before folding down the rear seat backrâ
ests, ensure that the area of movement of the
backrests is clear. In particular, ensure that no
one is located in or reaches into the area of
movement of the rear seat backrests when the
middle section is folded down. Otherwise, injury
or damage may result.â
Locking the backrests
Before letting passengers ride in the rear,
engage the seat backrests, locking them in
place. Otherwise, there is the danger of an acâ
cident due to unexpected seat movement.â
Ensure that the lock is securely engaged
When folding back the backrest, be sure
that it locks in place securely. The red warning
field in the control display disappears. If it is not
properly engaged, transported cargo could enâ
ter the passenger compartment during braking
or evasive maneuvers and endanger the vehicle
occupants.â
Using the middle safety belt
If the middle safety belt in the rear is used,
the larger section of the backrest must be
locked. Otherwise, the safety belt will not have
a restraining effect.â
Folding down the sides
The right side can be folded down separately.
The left side can be folded down in combination
with the middle section.
Reach into the recess and pull forward.

Partition net Do not let the partition net snap back into
place
Do not allow the partition net to snap back into
place; otherwise, there is a danger of injury and
the partition net could be damaged.â
With a normal cargo area
1.Fold open the rear covers on the headliner.2.Pull the partition net out of the case by the
strap.3.Insert the bars into the brackets on both

Stowing cargoâˇHeavy cargo: stow as far forward and as low
as possible, ideally directly behind the rear
seat.âˇVery heavy cargo: when the rear seat is not
occupied, secure each of the outer safety
belts in the opposite buckle.âˇCover sharp edges and corners.âˇIf necessary, fold down the rear backrests to
stow cargo.âˇDo not stack cargo above the top edge of the
backrests.âˇUse the partition net, refer to page 132, to
protect passengers. Make sure that objects
cannot penetrate the partition net.âˇPlace protective material around any sharp-
edged or pointed objects that could bump
against the rear window while the vehicle is
in motion.Securing cargo

Socket for OBD Onboard
Diagnosis
Position
There is an OBD socket on the driver's side for
checking the primary components in the vehicle
emissions.
Emissions
âˇThe warning lamp lights up:
Emissions are deteriorating. Have
the vehicle checked as soon as posâ
sible.
Canadian model: warning light indiâ
cates the engine symbol.âˇThe warning lamp flashes under certain cirâ
cumstances:
This indicates that there is excessive misfirâ
ing in the engine.
Reduce the vehicle speed and have the sysâ
tem checked immediately; otherwise, seriâ
ous engine misfiring within a brief period can
seriously damage emission control compoâ
nents, in particular the catalytic converter.
Fuel cap
The indicator lamp lights up.
If the fuel cap is not properly tightened,
the OBD system may conclude that fuel
vapor is escaping. If the cap is then tightened,
the display should go out in a short time.
Data memory
Your vehicle records data relating to vehicle opâ
eration, faults and user settings. These data are
stored in the remote control and can be read out
with suitable devices, particularly when the veâ
hicle is serviced. The data obtained in this way
provide valuable information for service procâ
esses and repair or for optimizing and developâ
ing vehicle functions further.
In addition, if you signed a service contract for
BMW Assist, certain vehicle data can be sent
directly from the vehicle to facilitate the desired
services.
Event Data Recorder EDR
This vehicle is equipped with an event data reâ
corder EDR. The main purpose of an EDR is to
record, in certain crash or near crash-like situaâ
tions, such as an air bag deployment or hitting a
road obstacle, data that will assist in underâ
standing how a vehicleâs systems performed.
The EDR is designed to record data related to
vehicle dynamics and safety systems for a short
period of time, typically 30 seconds or less.
The EDR in this vehicle is designed to record
such data as:âˇHow various systems in your vehicle were
operating.âˇWhether or not the driver and passenger
safety belts were fastened.âˇHow far, if at all, the driver was depressing
the accelerator and/or brake pedal.âˇHow fast the vehicle was traveling.
These data can help provide a better underâ
standing of the circumstances in which crashes
and injuries occur.
EDR data are recorded by your vehicle only if a
nontrivial crash situation occurs; no data are reâ
corded by the EDR under normal driving condiâ
tions and no personal data, e.g., name, gender,
age, and crash location, are recorded.

If they are very dirty, e.g., beverage stains, use a
soft sponge or microfiber cloth with a suitable
interior cleaner.
Clean the upholstery down to the seams using
large sweeping motions. Avoid rubbing the maâ
terial vigorously.
Damage from VelcroÂŽ fasteners
Open VelcroÂŽ fasteners on pants or other
articles of clothing can damage the seat covers.
Ensure that any VelcroÂŽ fasteners are closed. â
Caring for special components
Light-alloy wheels
Use wheel cleaner, particularly during the winter
months. Do not use aggressive, acidic, strongly
alkaline or abrasive cleaners, or steam jets
above 140 â/60 â; follow the manufacturer's
instructions.
Chrome surfaces
Carefully clean components such as the radiator
grille or door handles with an ample supply of
water, possibly with shampoo added, particuâ
larly when they have been exposed to road salt.
Rubber components
Aside from water, treat only with rubber cleansâ
ers.
When cleaning rubber seals, do not use any silâ
icon-containing car care products in order to
avoid damage or reduced noise damping.
Fine wood parts
Clean fine wood facing and fine wood compoâ
nents only with a moist rag. Then dry with a soft
cloth.
Plastic components
These include:âˇImitation leather surfaces.âˇHeadliner.âˇLamp lenses.âˇInstrument cluster cover.âˇMatte black spray-coated components.âˇPainted parts in the interior.
Clean with a microfiber cloth.
Lightly dampen the cloth with water.
Do not soak the headliner.
Do not use cleansers that contain alcohol
or solvents
Do not use cleansers that contain alcohol or solâ
vents, such as lacquer thinners, heavy-duty
grease removers, fuel, or such; this could lead to
surface damage.â
Safety belts
Dirty belt straps impede the reeling action and
thus have a negative impact on safety.
Chemical cleaning
Do not clean chemically; this can destroy
the webbing.â
Use only a mild soapy solution, with the safety
belts clipped into their buckles.
Do not allow the reels to retract the safety belts
until they are dry.
Carpets and floor mats No objects in the area around the pedals
Keep floor mats, carpets, and any other
objects out of the area of motion of the pedals;
otherwise, the function of the pedals could be
impeded while driving
Do not place additional floor mats over existing
mats or other objects.
Only use floor mats that have been approved for
the vehicle and can be properly fixed in place.
Ensure that the floor mats are securely fastened
again after they were removed for cleaning, for
example.â
Floor mats can be removed from the passenger
compartment for cleaning.
