Lap-Shoulder Belt
All rear seat positions have lap-shoulder belts.
Here is how to wear one properly.
1. Pick up the latch plate and pull the belt across
you. Do not let it get twisted.
The shoulder belt may lock if you pull the belt
across you very quickly. If this happens, let
the belt go back slightly to unlock it. Then pull
the belt across you more slowly.2. Push the latch plate into the buckle until it
clicks.
If the belt stops before it reaches the buckle,
tilt the latch plate and keep pulling until
you can buckle it.
Pull up on the latch plate to make sure it is
secure.
If the belt is not long enough, seeSafety Belt
Extender on page 41.
Make sure the release button on the buckle is
positioned so you would be able to unbuckle
the safety belt quickly if you ever had to.

The shoulder belt should go over the shoulder and
across the chest. These parts of the body are
best able to take belt restraining forces.
The safety belt locks if there is a sudden stop or
a crash.
{CAUTION:
You can be seriously hurt if your shoulder
belt is too loose. In a crash, you would
move forward too much, which could
increase injury. The shoulder belt should
t against your body.To unlatch the belt, push the button on the buckle.

{CAUTION:
Children can be seriously injured or
strangled if a shoulder belt is wrapped
around their neck and the safety belt
continues to tighten. Secure any unused
safety belts behind the child restraint so
children cannot reach them. Pull the
shoulder belt all the way out of the
retractor to set the lock, if your vehicle has
one, after the child restraint has been
installed. Be sure to follow the instructions
of the child restraint manufacturer.
Notice:Contact between the child restraint or
the LATCH attachment parts and the vehicle’s
safety belt assembly may cause damage to
these parts. Make sure when securing unused
safety belts behind the child restraint that
there is no contact between the child restraint
or the LATCH attachment parts and the
vehicle’s safety belt assembly.Folding an empty rear seat with the safety
belts secured may cause damage to the safety
belt or the seat. When removing the child
restraint, always remember to return the safety
belts to their normal, stowed position before
folding the rear seat.
1. Attach and tighten the lower attachments to
the lower anchors. If the child restraint does
not have lower attachments or the desired
seating position does not have lower anchors,
secure the child restraint with the top tether
and the safety belts. Refer to your child
restraint manufacturer instructions and the
instructions in this manual.
1.1. Find the lower anchors for the desired
seating position.
1.2. Put the child restraint on the seat.
1.3. Attach and tighten the lower
attachments on the child restraint to the
lower anchors.

The roof-mounted side impact airbag for the front
passenger and the passenger directly behind
the front passenger is in the ceiling above the
side windows.
{CAUTION:
If something is between an occupant and
an airbag, the airbag might not inate
properly or it might force the object into
that person causing severe injury or even
death. The path of an inating airbag
must be kept clear. Do not put anything
between an occupant and an airbag, and
do not attach or put anything on the
steering wheel hub or on or near any
other airbag covering. Never secure
anything to the roof of your vehicle by
routing the rope or tie-down through any
door or window opening. If you do, the
path of an inating airbag will be blocked.
Do not let seat covers block the ination
path of a side impact airbag. The path of
an inating airbag must be kept clear.

Your vehicle has a feature that may automatically
unlock the doors, turn the interior lamps on,
and turn the hazard warning ashers on when the
airbags inate. You can lock the doors, turn the
interior lamps off, and turn the hazard warning
ashers off by using the controls for those
features.
In many crashes severe enough to inate the
airbag, windshields are broken by vehicle
deformation. Additional windshield breakage may
also occur from the right front passenger airbag.
Airbags are designed to inate only once.
After an airbag inates, you will need
some new parts for the airbag system. If you
do not get them, the airbag system will
not be there to help protect you in another
crash. A new system will include airbag
modules and possibly other parts. The service
manual for your vehicle covers the need to
replace other parts.
Your vehicle has a crash sensing and
diagnostic module which records information
after a crash. SeeVehicle Data Collection and
Event Data Recorders on page 494.
Let only qualied technicians work on the
airbag systems. Improper service can
mean that an airbag system will not work
properly. See your dealer for service.

One key works all of
the lock cylinders on
the vehicle.
Your vehicle has an Immobilizer Vehicle
Theft-Deterrent System. The key has a transponder
in the key head that matches a decoder in the
vehicle’s steering column. If a replacement key or
any additional key is needed, you must purchase it
from your dealer. The key will have PK3+ stamped
on it. Keep the bar code tag that came with the
original keys. Give this tag to your dealer if you
need a new key made.
Notice:If you ever lock your keys in your
vehicle, you may have to damage the vehicle
to get in. Be sure you have spare keys.

Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System
Your Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) system
operates on a radio frequency subject to Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) Rules
and with Industry Canada.
This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC
Rules. Operation is subject to the following
two conditions:
1. This device may not cause interference.
2. This device must accept any interference
received, including interference that may
cause undesired operation of the device.

Changes or modications to this system by other
than an authorized service facility could void

At times you may notice a decrease in operating
range. This is normal for any RKE system.
If the transmitter does not work or if you have to
stand closer to your vehicle for the transmitter
to work, try this:
Check the distance. You may be too far from
your vehicle. You may need to stand closer
during rainy or snowy weather.
Check the location. Other vehicles or objects
may be blocking the signal. Take a few steps
to the left or right, hold the transmitter
higher, and try again.
Check to determine if battery replacement is
necessary. See “Battery Replacement”
underRemote Keyless Entry (RKE) System
Operation on page 97.
If you are still having trouble, see your
dealer/retailer or a qualied technician
for service.
Remote Keyless Entry (RKE)
System Operation
With this feature, you can lock and unlock the
doors or the trunk and turn on your vehicle’s
interior lamps from about 10 feet (3 m) away using
the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter
supplied with your vehicle.
Q(Lock):Press this
symbol on the RKE
transmitter to lock
the doors. This also
arms the theft-deterrent
system.
You can program your vehicle so that the exterior
lamps will ash and/or the horn will sound
when you lock the doors with the RKE transmitter.

W(Unlock):Press this symbol on the RKE
transmitter to unlock the driver’s door. This also
disarms the theft-deterrent system. Press the
button again to unlock the other doors.
You can program your vehicle so that the exterior
lamps will ash when you unlock the doors
with the RKE transmitter. SeeDIC Vehicle
Personalization on page 242for more information
on programming this feature.
L(Panic Alarm):The RKE transmitter has an
instant panic alarm. Press this button when the
ignition is turned off. The horn will sound and the
exterior lamps will ash for up to 30 seconds.
To stop the instant panic alarm, press this button
again or turn the ignition to ON.
V(Trunk):Press and hold this button for
approximately one second to open the trunk.
The RKE transmitter can be used to recall the
memory settings for up to two drivers. For more
information, seeDIC Vehicle Personalization on
page 242andMemory Seat and Mirrors on
page 11.
Matching Transmitter(s) to
Your Vehicle
Each RKE transmitter is coded to prevent
another transmitter from unlocking your vehicle.
If a transmitter is lost or stolen, a replacement can
be purchased through your dealer. Remember
to bring any remaining transmitters with you when
you go to your dealer. When the dealer matches
the replacement transmitter to your vehicle,
any remaining transmitters must also be matched.
Once your dealer has coded the new transmitter,
the lost transmitter will not unlock your vehicle.
Each vehicle can have a maximum of four
transmitters matched to it.

Door Locks
{CAUTION:
Unlocked doors can be dangerous.
Passengers, especially children, can
easily open the doors and fall out of a
moving vehicle. When a door is
locked, the handle will not open it.
You increase the chance of being
thrown out of the vehicle in a crash if
the doors are not locked. So, wear
safety belts properly and lock the
doors whenever you drive.
Young children who get into unlocked
vehicles may be unable to get out.
A child can be overcome by extreme
heat and can suffer permanent injuries
or even death from heat stroke.
Always lock your vehicle whenever
you leave it.

Outsiders can easily enter through an
unlocked door when you slow down
or stop your vehicle. Locking your
doors can help prevent this from
happening.
There are several ways to lock and unlock your
vehicle.
Because your vehicle has the theft-deterrent
system, you must unlock the doors from the
outside with the key or Remote Keyless
Entry (RKE) transmitter to avoid setting off the
alarm. If the windows are down and the doors are
locked, do not reach in to manually unlock the
vehicle because you will set off the alarm.
