Engine Oil Additives / Engine Oil
Flushes
Do not add anything to the oil. The recommended oils
with the starburst symbol that meet GM standards are all
you need for good performance and engine protection.
Engine oil system ushes are not recommended and
could cause engine damage not covered by the vehicle
warranty.
Engine Oil Life System
When to Change Engine Oil
This vehicle has a computer system that lets you know
when to change the engine oil and lter. This is based on
engine revolutions and engine temperature, and not on
mileage. Based on driving conditions, the mileage at
which an oil change will be indicated can vary
considerably. For the oil life system to work properly, you
must reset the system every time the oil is changed.When the system has calculated that oil life has been
diminished, it will indicate that an oil change is necessary.
A Change Engine Oil Soon message will come on.
SeeDIC Warnings and Messages on page 3-58. Change
the oil as soon as possible within the next 600 miles
(1 000 km). It is possible that, if you are driving under the
best conditions, the oil life system might not indicate that
an oil change is necessary for over a year. However, the
engine oil and lter must be changed at least once a year
and at this time the system must be reset. Your dealer/
retailer has trained service people who will perform this
work using genuine parts and reset the system. It is also
important to check the oil regularly and keep it at the
proper level.
If the system is ever reset accidentally, you must
change the oil at 3,000 miles (5 000 km) since the last
oil change. Remember to reset the oil life system
whenever the oil is changed.

How to Reset the Engine Oil Life
System
The Engine Oil Life System calculates when to change
the engine oil and lter based on vehicle use. Whenever
the oil is changed, reset the system so it can calculate
when the next oil change is required. If a situation occurs
where you change the oil prior to a Change Engine Oil
Soon message being turned on, reset the system.
Always reset the engine oil life to 100% after every oil
change. It will not reset itself. To reset the Engine
Oil Life System:
1. Display the OIL LIFE REMAINING on the DIC.
2. Press and hold the SET/RESET button on the DIC
for more than ve seconds. The oil life will change
to 100%.
If the Change Engine Oil Soon message comes back on
when you start the vehicle, the Engine Oil Life System
has not reset. Repeat the procedure.
What to Do with Used Oil
Used engine oil contains certain elements that can be
unhealthy for your skin and could even cause cancer.
Do not let used oil stay on your skin for very long. Clean
your skin and nails with soap and water, or a good
hand cleaner. Wash or properly dispose of clothing or
rags containing used engine oil. See the manufacturer’s
warnings about the use and disposal of oil products.
Used oil can be a threat to the environment. If you
change your own oil, be sure to drain all the oil from the
lter before disposal. Never dispose of oil by putting it
in the trash, pouring it on the ground, into sewers, or into
streams or bodies of water. Recycle it by taking it to a
place that collects used oil.

Engine Cover
Engine Cover (CTS)
To remove:
1. Remove the oil ll cap (A).
2. Raise the right front corner of engine cover (B) to
release from the ball stud.
3. Pull the engine cover (B) forward to slide the rear
tabs (C) out from under the retainers.
4. Lift and remove the engine cover.
5. Reverse Steps 1 through 4 to reinstall engine
cover.

Engine Cover (CTS-V)To remove: The engine cover consists of two pieces.
Only the larger piece needs to be removed to access the
engine oil and power steering ll caps.
1. Raise the front of engine cover (A) to release from
the ball studs (B).
2. Pull the engine cover forward until clear of the
smaller piece.
3. Lift and remove the engine cover.
4. Reverse Steps 1 through 3 to reinstall engine
cover.

Engine Air Cleaner/Filter
The engine air cleaner/lter is in the engine
compartment on the driver side of the vehicle, near
the front. SeeEngine Compartment Overview on
page 5-14for more information on location.
When to Inspect the Engine Air
Cleaner/Filter
Inspect the air cleaner/lter at the MaintenanceII
intervals and replace it at the rst oil change after each
50,000 mile (80 000 km) interval. SeeScheduled
Maintenance on page 6-4for more information. If you
are driving in dusty/dirty conditions, inspect the lter
at each engine oil change.
How to Inspect the Engine Air
Cleaner/Filter
To inspect the air cleaner/lter, remove the lter
from the vehicle and lightly shake the lter to release
loose dust and dirt. If the lter remains caked with dirt,
a new lter is required.To inspect or replace the engine air cleaner/lter:
1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Remove the side cover by pulling up on the front of
the cover.

3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the air box.
4. Loosen the screw on the clamp holding the air
outlet duct in place. Do not remove the clamp.
Move the duct aside.
5. Remove the hose from the air cleaner housing
mounting arm. Move the hose aside.6. Remove the three air cleaner housing cover
screws.

7. Pivot the air cleaner housing cover and remove the
cover from the air cleaner housing.8. Remove the air cleaner lter from the air cleaner
housing.

How to Reinstall Engine Air
Cleaner/Filter
1. Install the air cleaner into the air cleaner housing.
The outer air cleaner lter seal must be tted
properly in the air cleaner housing.
2. Align the air cleaner housing cover tabs to the air
cleaner housing.
3. Install the air cleaner housing cover.
4. Install the air cleaner housing cover screws.
5. Install the hose to the air cleaner housing mounting
arm. The hose must be routed correctly.
6. Install the air cleaner outlet duct to the air cleaner
housing.
7. Tighten the air cleaner outlet duct screw clamp.
8. Attach the electrical connector to the air box.
9. Reinstall the side cover.
{CAUTION:
Operating the engine with the air cleaner/lter off
can cause you or others to be burned. The air
cleaner not only cleans the air; it helps to stop
ames if the engine backres. If it is not there and
the engine backres, you could be burned. Do not
drive with it off, and be careful working on the
engine with the air cleaner/lter off.
Notice:If the air cleaner/lter is off, a backre can
cause a damaging engine re. And, dirt can easily get
into the engine, which will damage it. Always have
the air cleaner/lter in place when you are driving.

Automatic Transmission Fluid
How to Check Automatic Transmission
Fluid
It is not necessary to check the transmission uid level.
A transmission uid leak is the only reason for uid loss.
If a leak occurs, take the vehicle to the dealer/retailer
service department and have it repaired as soon as
possible.
There is a special procedure for checking and changing
the transmission uid. Because this procedure is
difficult, it should be done at the dealer/retailer service
department. Contact your dealer/retailer for additional
information or the procedure can be found in the service
manual. To purchase a service manual, seeService
Publications Ordering Information on page 7-15.Notice:Use of the incorrect automatic transmission
uid may damage the vehicle, and the damages
may not be covered by the vehicle’s warranty.
Always use the automatic transmission uid listed in
Recommended Fluids and Lubricants on page 6-14.
Change the uid and lter at the intervals listed in
Additional Required Services on page 6-6, and be sure
to use the uid listed inRecommended Fluids and
Lubricants on page 6-14.
Manual Transmission Fluid
It is not necessary to check the manual transmission uid
level. A transmission uid leak is the only reason for uid
loss. If a leak occurs, take the vehicle to a dealer/retailer
for service. Have it repaired as soon as possible. You
may also have the uid level checked by your dealer/
retailer when the oil is changed. SeeRecommended
Fluids and Lubricants on page 6-14for the proper uid
to use.

Hydraulic Clutch
It is not necessary to regularly check clutch uid unless
you suspect there is a leak in the system. Adding
uid will not correct a leak. A uid loss in this system
could indicate a problem. Have the system inspected
and repaired.
When to Check and What to Use
The hydraulic clutch uid
reservoir cap has this
symbol on it. SeeEngine

on page 5-14for reservoir
location.Refer to the Maintenance Schedule for the proper
uid to use. SeeRecommended Fluids and Lubricants
on page 6-14. The uid requires changing every
two years. SeeAdditional Required Services on
page 6-6.
How to Check and Add Fluid
Visually check the clutch uid reservoir to make sure
the uid level is at the MIN (Minimum) line on the side
of the reservoir. The hydraulic clutch uid system should
be kept closed and sealed. Do not remove the cap to
check the uid level or to top-off the uid level. Remove
the cap only when necessary to add the proper uid
until the level reaches the MIN line.
