PARKING ASSIST OFF
After the vehicle has been started, this messagedisplays to remind the driver that the Ultrasonic RearParking Assist (URPA) system has been turned off.Press the set/reset button to acknowledge this messageand clear it from the DIC display. To turn the URPAsystem back on, seeUltrasonic Rear Parking Assist(URPA) on page 3!46.

Handling the DVD Map Disc
When handling the DVD map disc, be careful of thefollowing:
.Handle the disc very carefully to avoidcontamination or flaws. Signals may not read outproperly if the disc gets contaminated or flawed.
.If the disc gets soiled, use a soft cloth to gentlywipe it out from the center of the disc to theoutside. Do not use photographic record cleaner,solvents, or other cleaners.
.Do not use the disc to rest on while writing ordrawing using any writing utensil or attach a seal toany of the sides or the disc.
.Do not keep the disc in direct sunlight, hightemperatures, or humidity.
.After using the disc, place it back into theoriginal case.
Map Adjustments
The system lets you adjust the scale of view on themap. Also, as you drive, the map scrolls automaticallybased on the direction of travel.
Map Scales
+/!(Zoom In/Zoom Out) :Touch the zoom in or outscreen buttons or the scale on the bar to change thelevel of map detail. The scale appears on the screenonce the zoom in or zoom out screen buttons areselected. The system adjusts the map accordingly.The scale of a map can range from 1/32 mi. (50 m)to 256 mi. (400 km). Other Rainy Weather Tips
Besides slowing down, other wet weather drivingtips include:
.Allow extra following distance.
.Pass with caution.
.Keep windshield wiping equipment in good shape.
.Keep the windshield washer fluid reservoir filled.
.Have good tires with proper tread depth.SeeTires on page 7!58.
.Turn off cruise control.
Before Leaving on a Long Trip
To prepare your vehicle for a long trip, consider havingit serviced by your dealer/retailer before departing.
Things to check on your own include:
.Windshield Washer Fluid:Reservoir full?Windows clean—inside and outside?
.Wiper Blades:In good shape?
.Fuel, Engine Oil, Other Fluids:All levels checked?
.Lamps:Do they all work and are lenses clean?
.Tires:Are treads good? Are tires inflated torecommended pressure?
.Weather and Maps:Safe to travel?Have up-to-date maps?
Highway Hypnosis
Always be alert and pay attention to your surroundingswhile driving. If you become tired or sleepy, find a safeplace to park your vehicle and rest.
Other driving tips include:
.Keep the vehicle well ventilated.
.Keep interior temperature cool.
.Keep your eyes moving—scan the roadahead and to the sides.
.Check the rearview mirror and vehicleinstruments often.

Driving On Grades
Reduce speed and shift to a lower gearbeforestartingdown a long or steep downgrade. If the transmission isnot shifted down, the brakes might get hot and nolonger work well.
Vehicles can tow in D (Drive). Shift the transmission toa lower gear if the transmission shifts too often underheavy loads and/or hilly conditions.
The tow/haul mode may be used if the transmissionshifts too often. SeeTow/Haul Mode on page 3!36.
When towing at high altitude on steep uphill grades,consider the following: Engine coolant will boil at alower temperature than at normal altitudes. If the engineis turned off immediately after towing at high altitude onsteep uphill grades, the vehicle may show signs similarto engine overheating. To avoid this, let the engine runwhile parked, preferably on level ground, with theautomatic transmission in P (Park) for a few minutesbefore turning the engine off. If the overheat warningcomes on, seeEngine Overheating on page 7!34.
Parking on Hills
{WARNING:
Parking the vehicle on a hill with the trailer
attached can be dangerous. If something goes
wrong, the rig could start to move. People can be
injured, and both the vehicle and the trailer can be
damaged. When possible, always park the rig on
a flat surface.
If parking the rig on a hill:
1. Press the brake pedal, but do not shift intoP (Park) yet. Turn the wheels into the curb if facingdownhill or into traffic if facing uphill.
2. Have someone place chocks under the trailerwheels.
3. When the wheel chocks are in place, release theregular brakes until the chocks absorb the load.

4. Reapply the brake pedal. Then apply the parkingbrake and shift into P (Park).
5. Release the brake pedal.
{WARNING:
It can be dangerous to get out of the vehicle if the
shift lever is not fully in P (Park) with the parking
brake firmly set. The vehicle can roll.
If the engine has been left running, the vehicle
can move suddenly. You or others could be
injured. To be sure the vehicle will not move, even
when on fairly level ground, always put the shift
lever fully in P (Park) with the parking brake
firmly set.
Leaving After Parking on a Hill
1. Apply and hold the brake pedal.
2. Start the engine
3. Shift into a gear
4. Release the parking brake
5. Let up on the brake pedal.
6. Drive slowly until the trailer is clear of the chocks.
7. Stop and have someone pick up and storethe chocks.
Maintenance When Trailer Towing
The vehicle needs service more often when pulling atrailer. See this manual's Maintenance Schedule orIndex for more information. Things that are especiallyimportant in trailer operation are automatic transmissionfluid, engine oil, axle lubricant, belts, cooling systemand brake system. It is a good idea to inspect thesebefore and during the trip.
Check periodically to see that all hitch nuts and boltsare tight.

Engine Oil
Checking Engine Oil
It is a good idea to check the engine oil level at eachfuel fill. In order to get an accurate reading, the oil mustbe warm and the vehicle must be on level ground.
The engine oil dipstick handle is a yellow loop. SeeEngine Compartment Overviewon page 7!16for thelocation of the engine oil dipstick.
1. Turn off the engine and give the oil several minutesto drain back into the oil pan. If this is not done, theoil dipstick might not show the actual level.
2. Pull out the dipstick and clean it with a paper towelor cloth, then push it back in all the way. Remove itagain, keeping the tip down, and check the level.

When to Add Engine Oil
If the oil is below the cross-hatched area at the tipof the dipstick, add at least one quart/liter of therecommended oil. This section explains what kindof oil to use. For engine oil crankcase capacity, seeCapacities and Specifications on page 7!115.
Notice:Do not add too much oil. If the enginehas so much oil that the oil level gets abovethe cross-hatched area that shows the properoperating range, the engine could be damaged.

Add enough oil to put the level somewhere in the properoperating range. Push the dipstick all the way back inwhen through.

What Kind of Engine Oil to Use
Look for three things:
.GM4718M
This vehicle's engine requires a special oil meetingGM Standard GM4718M. Oils meeting thisstandard may be identified as synthetic. However,not all synthetic oils will meet this GM standard.Use only an oil that meets GM StandardGM4718M.
Notice:Using oils that do not have the GM4718MStandard designation can cause engine damage notcovered by the vehicle warranty.
.SAE 5W-30
SAE 5W-30 is best for the vehicle. These numberson an oil container show its viscosity, or thickness.Do not use other viscosity oils such asSAE 20W-50.
.American Petroleum Institute (API) starburstsymbol
Oils meeting theserequirements should havethe starburst symbol onthe container. This symbolindicates that the oil hasbeen certified by theAmerican PetroleumInstitute (API).
This vehicle's engine was filled at the factory with aMobil 1®synthetic oil meeting all requirements for thisvehicle.
Substitute Engine Oil: When adding oil to maintainengine oil level, oil meeting GM Standard GM4718Mmight not be available. You can add substitute oildesignated SAE 5W-30 with the starburst symbol at alltemperatures. Substitute oil not meeting GM StandardGM4718M should not be used for an oil change.

Engine Oil Additives / Engine Oil
Flushes
Do not add anything to the oil. The recommended oilswith the starburst symbol that meet GM standards areall that is needed for good performance and engineprotection.
Engine oil system flushes are not recommended andcould cause engine damage not covered by the vehiclewarranty.
Engine Oil Life System
When to Change Engine Oil
This vehicle has a computer system that indicates whento change the engine oil and filter. This is based onengine revolutions and engine temperature, and not onmileage. Based on driving conditions, the mileage atwhich an oil change is indicated can vary considerably.For the oil life system to work properly, the system mustbe reset every time the oil is changed.
When the system has calculated that oil life has beendiminished, it indicates that an oil change is necessary.A CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message comes on.SeeDIC Warnings and Messageson page 4!48.Change the oil as soon as possible within the next600 miles (1 000 km). It is possible that, if driving underthe best conditions, the oil life system might not indicatethat an oil change is necessary for over a year.However, the engine oil and filter must be changed atleast once a year and at this time the system must bereset. Your dealer/retailer has trained service peoplewho will perform this work using genuine parts andreset the system. It is also important to check the oilregularly and keep it at the proper level.
If the system is ever reset accidentally, the oil must bechanged at 3,000 miles (5 000 km) since the last oilchange. Remember to reset the oil life systemwhenever the oil is changed.

Checking Coolant
The vehicle must be on a level surface when checkingthe coolant level.
Check to see if coolant is visible in the coolant surgetank. If the coolant inside the coolant surge tank isboiling, do not do anything else until it cools down.If coolant is visible but the coolant level is not at orabove the FULL COLD mark, add a 50/50 mixture ofclean, drinkable water and DEX-COOL®coolant at thecoolant surge tank, but be sure the cooling system iscool before this is done.
The coolant surge tank is located in the enginecompartment on the passenger side of the vehicle.SeeEngine Compartment Overviewon page 7!16formore information on location.
The coolant level should be at or above the FULLCOLD mark. If it is not, you may have a leak in thecooling system.
