Your anti-lock brakes improve your vehicle's stability
when you make a hard stop on a slippery road. Even
though you have an anti
-lock braking system, you'll
want to begin stopping sooner than you would on dry
pavement. See ªAnti
-Lockº in the Index.

Allow greater following distance on any
slippery road.

Watch for slippery spots. The road might be fine
until you hit a spot that's covered with ice. On an
otherwise clear road, ice patches may appear in
shaded areas where the sun can't reach: around
clumps of trees, behind buildings or under bridges.
Sometimes the surface of a curve or an overpass
may remain icy when the surrounding roads are
clear. If you see a patch of ice ahead of you,
brake before you are on it. Try not to brake
while you're actually on the ice, and avoid sudden
steering maneuvers.
If You're Caught in a Blizzard
If you are stopped by heavy snow, you could be in a
serious situation. You should probably stay with your
vehicle unless you know for sure that you are near help
and you can hike through the snow. Here are some
things to do to summon help and keep yourself and
your passengers safe:

Turn on your hazard flashers.

Tie a red cloth to your vehicle to alert police that
you've been stopped by the snow.

Put on extra clothing or wrap a blanket around you.
If you have no blankets or extra clothing, make body
insulators from newspapers, burlap bags, rags, floor
mats
-- anything you can wrap around yourself or
tuck under your clothing to keep warm.
You can run the engine to keep warm, but be careful.
CAUTION:
Snow can trap exhaust gases under your vehicle.
This can cause deadly CO (carbon monoxide) gas
to get inside. CO could overcome you and kill
you. You can't see it or smell it, so you might not
know it is in your vehicle. Clear away snow from
around the base of your vehicle, especially any
that is blocking your exhaust pipe. And check
around again from time to time to be sure snow
doesn't collect there.
Open a window just a little on the side of the
vehicle that's away from the wind. This will help
keep CO out.

(Two and Four-Wheel Drive Vehicles)
Tw o-Wheel-Drive Vehicles
Tw o
-wheel-drive, vehicles, should not be towed with
all four wheels on the ground. Two
-wheel-drive
transmissions have no provisions for internal lubrication
while being towed. To properly tow these vehicles, they
should be placed on a platform trailer with all four
wheels off the ground.
In rare cases when it's unavoidable that a two
-wheel
drive vehicle is to be towed with all four wheels on the
ground, the propeller shaft axle yoke orientation should
be marked and the propeller shaft removed following the
applicable service manual removal/installation procedure.
Dust or dirt can enter the back of the transmission
through the opening created by removing the propeller
shaft if proper protection is not provided. Also, check
the transmission fluid level before driving the truck.
When the vehicle is properly attached to the tow vehicle
and is ready to be towed, turn the ignition to OFF.
To prevent the battery from draining, remove the IGN 0
fuse from the instrument panel fuse block. See ªFusesº
in the Index for more information about removing the
IGN 0 fuse.

Four-Wheel-Drive Vehicles
Use the following procedure to correctly tow your
vehicle on all four wheels:
1. Firmly set the parking brake.
2. Shift the transmission to PARK (P).
3. Securely attach the vehicle being towed to the
tow vehicle.
CAUTION:
Shifting a four-wheel-drive vehicle's transfer
case into NEUTRAL can cause your vehicle to
roll even if the transmission is in Park (P). You or
others could be injured. Make sure the parking
brake is firmly set before you shift the transfer
case to NEUTRAL. See ªTransfer Caseºin the
Index for more information.
4. Shift the transfer case to NEUTRAL (N).

-Wheel-Driveº in the Index for the
proper procedure to select the neutral position for
your vehicle.
5. Release the parking brake only after the vehicle
being towed is firmly attached to the towing vehicle.
6. When the vehicle is properly attached to the tow
vehicle and is ready to be towed, turn the ignition to
OFF. To prevent the battery from draining, remove
the IGN 0 fuse from the instrument panel fuse block.

(Two-Wheel Drive Vehicle Only)

the rear wheels on the ground. Two
-wheel-drive
transmissions have no provisions for internal lubrication
while being towed. To properly tow these vehicles, they
should be placed on a platform trailer with all four
wheels off the ground.
In rare cases when it's unavoidable that a two
-wheel
drive vehicle is to be towed with the rear wheels on the
ground, the propeller shaft axle yoke orientation should
be marked and the propeller shaft removed following the
applicable service manual removal/installation procedure.
Dust or dirt can enter the back of the transmission

shaft if proper protection is not provided. Also, check
the transmission fluid level before driving the truck.
When the vehicle is properly attached to the tow vehicle

Clamp the steering wheel in a straight
-ahead position
with a clamping device designed for towing.

Instrument Panel Jumper Wiring Harness
This harness is included with the heavy-duty trailer
wiring package. The harness is for an electric trailer
brake controller and includes a trailer battery feed fuse.
This harness and fuse should be installed by your dealer
or a qualified service center.Four
-Wire Trailer Harness Adapter
If you need to tow a
light
-duty trailer with a
standard four
-way round
pin connector, an adapter
is included.
Connect the adapter with the tab (arrow) pointing
towards the top. The cap on the wiring harness will lock
onto the tab (arrow) and help hold the adapter in place.

1. You can remove the coolant surge tank pressure cap
when the cooling system, including the coolant surge
tank pressure cap and upper radiator hose, is no
longer hot. Turn the pressure cap slowly
counterclockwise (left) about one full turn. If you
hear a hiss, wait for that to stop. A hiss means there
is still some pressure left.
2. Then keep turning the pressure cap slowly, and
remove it.

If a Tire Goes Flat
It's unusual for a tire to ªblow outº while you're driving,
especially if you maintain your tires properly. If air goes
out of a tire, it's much more likely to leak out slowly.
But if you should ever have a ªblowout,º here are
a few tips about what to expect and what to do:
If a front tire fails, the flat tire will create a drag that
pulls the vehicle toward that side. Take your foot off
the accelerator pedal and grip the steering wheel firmly.
Steer to maintain lane position, and then gently brake
to a stop well out of the traffic lane.
A rear blowout, particularly on a curve, acts much like
a skid and may require the same correction you'd use
in a skid. In any rear blowout, remove your foot from
the accelerator pedal. Get the vehicle under control by
steering the way you want the vehicle to go. It may be
very bumpy and noisy, but you can still steer. Gently
brake to a stop
-- well off the road if possible.
If a tire goes flat, the next part shows how to use your
jacking equipment to change a flat tire safely.
Changing a Flat Tire
If a tire goes flat, avoid further tire and wheel damage
by driving slowly to a level place. Turn on your hazard
warning flashers.
CAUTION:
Changing a tire can cause an injury. The vehicle
can slip off the jack and roll over you or other
people. You and they could be badly injured.
Find a level place to change your tire. To help
prevent the vehicle from moving:
1. Set the parking brake firmly.
2. Put the shift lever in PARK (P).
3. If you have a four
-wheel-drive vehicle,
be sure the transfer case is in a drive
gear
-- not in NEUTRAL.
4. Turn off the engine.
5. Put the wheel blocks at the front and
rear of the tire farthest away from the
one being changed. That would be the
tire on the other side of the vehicle, at
the opposite end.

The following steps will tell you how to use the jack and
change a tire.
Removing the Spare Tire and Tools
The jack and the wheel blocks are located under a cover
near the passenger side rear seat.
To remove, do the following:
Rear Seat (Passenger Side) Jack Cover
1. Remove the jack cover by turning the two wing nuts
one
-quarter turn counterclockwise and pulling the
jack cover off.

2. Remove the wheel blocks by turning the wing
nut counterclockwise.
3. Release the bottle jack from its holder by turning the
knob on the jack counterclockwise to lower the jack
head from the bracket.The tools for changing a flat tire are located in the
passenger's side Top
-Box Storage unit.
To remove the tools, do the following:
1. Open the top door on the passenger's side Top
-Box
Storage unit. Use the ignition/door key to unlock it if
it is locked. See ªTop Box Storageº in the Index for
more information on the Top
