Features & Controls
kmrting Your Engine
Engines start differently. The 8th digit of your Vehicle Identification Number
(VIN) shows the code letter or number for your engine. You
will find the VIN
at the top left of your instrument panel. (See “Vehicle Identification Number\
”
in the Index.) Follow the proper steps to start the engine.
To Start Your 5.7 Liter (Code K) engine
or
7.4 Liter (Code N) engine:
1. Automatic Transmission
Move your shift lever to P (Park) or N (Neutral). Your engine won’t start
in any other position-that’s a safety feature. To restart when you’re
already moving, use
N (Neutral) only.

Manual Transmission
Shift your gear selector to neutral and hold the clutch pedal \
to the floor
while starting the engine, Your vehicle won’t start if the clutch pedal is
not
all the way down-that’s a safety feature.
2. Don’t push the accelerator pedal before starting your engine.\
In some
other vehicles you might need to do this, but because of your vehicle’s
computer systems, you don’t.

7.4L Engine Cold Start: In cold weather, below 60°F (16°C)’ start the
engine the same way but push the accelerator pedal one-quarter \
of the
way down and hold it there for about 2 seconds after the engine starts.
3. Turn your ignition key to Start. When the engine starts, let go of the

Charging System Light

The red charging system light is located at the upper right hand corner of
your instrument cluster. It should come on briefly when you turn on the
ignition, before starting the engine, as a check
to show you it is working.
After the engine starts, the light should go out.
If it stays on, or comes on
while you are driving, you may have a problem with your elect\
rical charging
system. It could indicate that you have a loose alternator drive belt, or that
you have some other electrical problem. Have it checked right away. Driving
while this light is on could drain your battery.
If you must drive a short distance with the light on, be certain to turn off all
your accessories, such as the radio and air conditioner.

A reading in the low pressure zone may be caused by a dangerouslv low oil
level or other problem causing low oil pressure. Check your oi\
l as soon as
possible.
CAUTION
Don’t keep driving if the oil pressure is low. If you do, your engine
can become so hot that it catches on fire, You or others could be
burned. Check your oil as soon as possible and have your vehicle
serviced.

When your engine is not running, but the ignition is on (in \
the Run position),
this gage
shows your battery’s state of charge in DC volts. When the engine
is running, the gage shows the condition
of the charging system. Readings
between the low and high warning zones indicate the normal ope\
rating range.
Readings in either warning zone indicate a possible problem in \
the electrical
system.

The 7-wire harness is stored under your vehicle along the rear\
frame
crossmember. The harness has a
30 amp in-line fused battery feed wire and
no connector, and should be wired by a qualified electrical se\
rvice person.
Securely attach the harness to the trailer, then tape or strap\
it
to your
vehicle’s frame rail. Be sure you leave it
loose enough so the wiring won’t
bind or break when turning with the trailer, but not
so loose that it drags on
the ground.
Store the harness in its original position. Wrap the harness t\
ogether and tie it neatly
so it won’t be damaged.

Your Driving and the Road

Run your engine only as long as you must. This saves fuel. When you run
the engine, make
it go a little faster than just idle. That is, push the
accelerator slightly. This uses
less fuel for the heat that you get and it keeps
the battery charged.
You will need a well-charged battery to restart the
vehicle, and possibly
for signaling later on with your headlights. Let the heater
run for awhile. Then,
shut the engine off and close the window almost all the
way to preserve the heat. Start the engine again and repeat this only when
you feel really uncomfortable from the cold. But do it as little as possible.
Preserve the fuel as long as you can. To help keep warm, you can get out
of the vehicle and do some fairly vigorous exercises every half hour or so
until help comes.

This manual explains how to get the vehicle out of deep snow without
damaging it. See “Rocking Your Vehicle” in the Index.
Towing a mailer
I A If you don’t use the correct equipment and drive properly, you can
lose control when
you pull a trailer. For example, if the trailer is too
heavy, the brakes may not work well-or even at all. You and your
passengers could be seriously injured. Pull a trailer only
if you have
followed all the steps in this section.

To turn off the flashers, pull out on the collar.
When the hazard warning flashers are
on, your turn signals won't work.
Other Warning Devices
If you carry reflective triangles, you can set one up at the sid\
e of the road
about
300 feet (100 m) behind your vehicle.
Jump Starting
If your battery has run down, you may want to use another vehicle and some
jumper cables to start your vehicle. But please follow the ste\
ps below to
do it
safely.
I CAUTION
Batteries can hurt you. They can be dangerous because:

To Jump Start Your Vehicle
1. Check the other vehicle. It must have a 12-volt battery with a negative
ground system.
NOTICE

2. Get the vehicles close enough so the jumper cables can reach, but be
sure the vehicles aren't touching each other.
If they are, it could cause a

ground connection you don’t want. You wouldn’t be able to start your
vehicle, and the bad grounding could damage the electrical systems.
CAUTION
A You could be injured if the vehicles roll. Set the parking brake firmly
on each vehicle. Put an automatic transmission in
P (Park) or a
manual transmission in
N (Neutral).
If you have a four-wheel-drive vehicle, be sure the transfer case is
not in N (Neutral).
3. Turn off the ignition on both vehicles. Turn off all lights that aren’t
needed, and radios. This will avoid sparks and help save both \
batteries.
And it could save your radio!

4. Open the hoods and locate the batteries.
Find the positive
(t) and negative (-) terminals on each battery,
CAUTION
A Using a match near a battery can cause battery gas to explode.
b People have been hurt doing this, and some have been blinded. \
Use
a flashlight if you need more light.
Be sure the batteries have enough water.
You don’t need to add
water
to the Delco Freedom@ battery installed in every new GM
vehicle. But if a battery has filler caps, be sure the right amount of
fluid
is there. If it is low, add water to take care of that first. If you
don’t, explosive gas could be present.
Battery fluid contains acid that can bum you. Don’t get
it on you. If’
you accidentally get it in your eyes or on your skin, flush the place
with water and get medical help immediately. c
5. Check that the jumper cables don’t have loose or missing insulation. If
they do, you could get a shock. The vehicles could be damaged, too.
Before you connect the cables, here are some things you should\
know.
Positive (t) will go to positive (t) and negative (-) will go to negative

(-) or a metal engine part. Don’t connect (t) to (-) or you’ll get a
short that would damage the battery and maybe other parts, too.
A Fans or other moving engine parts can injure you badly. Keep your
h hands away from moving parts once the engines are running.
6. Connect the red positive (t) cable to the positive (t) terminal of the
vehicle with the dead battery. Use a remote positive
(+) terminal if the
vehicle has one.

7. Don’t let the other end touch metal. Connect it to the positive (+)
terminal of the good battery. Use a remote positive (+) terminal if the
vehicle has one.

Now connect the black negative (-) cable to the good battery’s negative
(-) terminal.
Don’t let the other end touch anything until the next step. The other end
of the negative cable
doesn’t go to the dead battery. It goes to a heavy
unpainted metal part on the engine
of the vehicle with the dead battery.
9. Attach the cable at least 18 inches (45 cm) away from the dead battery,
but not near engine
parts that move. The electrical connection is just as
good there, but the chance
of sparks getting back to the battery is much
less.
