heater plugged in? The answer depends
on the weather, the kind of oil you have,
and some other things. Instead of trying to
list everything here, we ask
that you

Automatic
Transmission
There are several different positions for
your shift lever.
P (Park)
This locks your rear wheels. It’s the best
position to use when you start your
engine because your vehicle can’t move
easily.
It is dangerous to get out of
your vehicle
if rhe shift lever is
not fully in P (Park) with the
parking brake
firmly set. Your
vehicle can roll.
Don’t leave your vehicle when the
engine
is running unless you have
to. If you have left the engine
running, the vehicle can move
suddenly.
You or others could be
injured. To be sure your vehicle
won’t move, when you’re on fairly
level ground, always set your
parking brake and move the shift lever to
P (Park).

N (Neutral) while your engine

This position is for normal driving. If you
need more power for passing, md you’re:
- Going less than about 35 mph

D (Third Gear)
This is like @I , but you never go into
Overdrive.
Here are some times you might choose
D
instead of @ :
- When driving on hilly, winding roads
- When towing a trailer. so there is less
shifting between gears

Shifting into P (Park)
(AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION)

If you cannot shift out of P (Park), ease
pressure
on the shift lever - push the
shift lever all the way into
P (Park) and
also release the shift lever button on
floor shift console models as you
maintain brake application. Then move the
shift lever into the gear you wish.
(Press the shift lever button before
moving the shift lever.)
If you ever hold the brake pedal down but
still can’t shift
out of P (Park), try this:
1. Turn the key to Off.
2. Apply and hold the brake until the end
3. Shift to N (Neutral).
4. Start the vehicle and then shift to the
drive gear
you want.

Running Your Engine While You’re Parked (AUTOMATIC TRANsMIssIoN)
It’s better not to park with the engine running. But if you ever have to, here are some
things
to know.

Also, idling in a closed-in place can let deadly carbon monoxide
(CO) into your
vehicle even if the fan switch is at the highest setting. One place this can \
happen
is a garage. Exhaust - with CO - can come in easily. NEVER park in a garage
with the engine running.

Run your engine only as long as you
must. This saves fuel. When you
run the
engine, make
it go a little faster than just
idle. That is, push the accelerator slightly.
This uses less fuel for the heat that you
get and
it keeps the battery charged. You
will need a well-charged battery to restart
the vehicle, and possibly for signaling
later on
with your headlights. Let the
heater
run for awhile.
Then. shut the engine off and close the
window almost all the way to preserve the
heat. Start the engine again and repeat this
only when you feel really uncomfortable
from the cold.
But do it as little as
possible. Preserve the fuel as long as you
can.
To help keep warm. you can get out
3f the vehicle and do some fairly vigorous
zxercises every half hour or
so until help

Towing a Trailer

too heavy, the brakes may not work
well - or even at all. You and your
passengers could be seriously
injured. Pull a trailer only if you
have followed all the steps in this

Your vehicle can tow a trailer if it is
equipped
with the proper trailer towing
equipment.
To identify what the vehicle
trailering capacity
is for your vehicle, you
should read the information in “Weight
of the Trailer” that appears later
in this
section. But trailering is different than just
driving your vehicle by itself. Trailering
means changes
in handling, durability, and fuel economy.
Successful, safe
trailering takes correct equipment, and
it has to be used properly.
That’s the reason for this section, In it are
many time-tested, important trailering
tips and safety rules. Many of these are
important for your safety and that of your
passengers.
So please read this section
carefully before you pull a trailer.
Load-pulling components such as the
engine, transmission, wheel assemblies,
and tires are forced to work harder against
the drag of the added weight. The engine
is required to operate at relatively higher
speeds and under greater loads, generating extra
heat. What’s more,
the
trailer adds considerably to wind
resistance, increasing the pulling
requirements.
If You Do Decide to Pull a Trailer
If you do, here are some important points.
There are many different laws having
to do
with trailering. Make sure your
rig
will be legal, not only where you
live but also where you’ll be driving.

Consider using a sway control. You
can ask a hitch dealer about sway
controls,
Don’t tow a trailer at all during the
first
500 miles (800 km) your new
vehicle is driven. Your engine, axle or
other parts could
be damaged.
Then, during the first
500 miles (800
km) that you tow a trailer, don’t drive
over
50 mph (80 km/h) and don’t
make starts at full throttle. This helps
your engine and other parts of your
vehicle wear
in at the heavier loads. Three
important considerations have to do
with weight:
Weight of the Trailer
How heavy can a trailer safely be?
It should never weigh more than
1,500 pounds (680 kg) under normal
driving conditions. It should never
weigh more than
1,000 pounds
(450 kg) when driven on long grades
at high ambient temperatures. But
even that can be too heavy.
It depends on how you plan to use
your rig. For example, speed, altitude,
road grades, outside temperature and
how much your vehicle is used to pull a
trailer are all important. And,
it can
also depend on any special equipment
that you have on your vehicle.

Your Driving and the
Weight of the Trailer Tongue
The tongue load (A) of any trailer is
an important weight to measure because
it affects the total capacity
weight of your vehicle. The capacity
weight includes the curb weight
of the
vehicle,
any cargo you may carry in it,
and the people who will be riding in
the vehicle. And if you will tow a
trailer, you must subtract the tongue load from your vehicle‘s capacity
weight because your vehicle
will be
carrying that weight, too. See
“Loading Your Vehicle”
in the Index
for more information about your
vehicle’s
maximum load capacity.
Road
The trailer tongue (A) should weigh
10% of the total loaded trailer weight
(E).
After you’ve loaded your trailer,
weigh the trailer and then the tongue,
separately, to see
if the weights are
proper.
If they aren’t, you may be able
to get them right simply
by moving
some items around
in the trailer.
Total Weight on Your Vehicle’s Tires
Be sure your vehicle’s tires are
inflated to the
limit for cold tires.
You’ll
find these numbers on the
Certification label at the rear edge of
the driver’s door (or see “Tire
Loading”
in the Index). Then be sure
you don’t go over
the GVW limit for
your vehicle.
Hitches
It‘s important to have the correct hitch
equipment. Crosswinds, large trucks
going
by. and rough roads are a few
reasons
why you’ll need the right hitch.
