A: You may be an excellent driver, but if you’re in an accident - even
wear safety belts?
one that isn’t your fault - you and your passengers can be hurt. Being
a good driver doesn’t protect you from things beyond your control,
such as bad drivers.
Most accidents occur within
25 miles (40 km) of home. And the
greatest number of serious injuries and deaths occur at speeds of less
than
40 mph (65 km/h).
Safety belts are for everyone.
Safety Belt Reminder Light
When the key is turned to “Run” or “Start,” a light will come on for about
eight seconds to remind people to fasten their safety belts. U\
nless the
driver’s safety belt is already buckled, a tone will also sound.
How To Wear Safety Belts Properly
Adults
This section is only for people of adult size.
Be aware that there are special things to know about safety b\
elts and children. And there are different rules for smaller children and babies. If a
child will be riding
in your vehicle, see the section after this one, called
“Children.” Follow those rules for everyone’s protection.\

Safety belts work for everyone, including pregnant women. Like all
occupants, they are more likely to be seriously injured if they don’t wear
safety belts.
A pregnant woman should wear a lap-shoulder belt, and the lap portion
should be worn
as low as possible throughout the pregnancy.
The best way to protect the fetus is to protect the mother. When a safety belt
is worn properly, it’s more likely that the fetus won’t be \
hurt in a crash. For
pregnant women,
as for anyone, the key to making safety belts effective is
wearing them properly.
Right Front Passenger Position
The right front passenger’s safety belt works the same way as the driver’s
safety belt. See “Driver Position,” earlier in this part.
When the shoulder belt is pulled out all the way, it will lock. If it does, let it
go back all the way and start again.

is for the doors and all
other locks.

When a new vehicle is delivered, the dealer removes the plugs~ffom the
keys,
and gives them to the first owner.
Each plug has a code
on it that tells your dealer or a qualified locksmith
how
to make extra keys. Keep the plugs in a safe place. If you lose your
keys, you'll be able to have new
ones made easily using these plugs.

Your vehicle has a number of new features that can help preve\
nt
theft.
But you can have a lot of trouble getting into your vehide
if' you ever lock your keys inside. You may even have to damage
your vehicle to get in.
So be sare you have extra keys.

There are several ways to lock and unlock your vehicle:

From the outside: Use
your door key.
From the inside:
To
lock the door, slide the
lever on your inside
door
to LOCK.
To unlock the door,
slide the lever on your
inside door toward
you. You will see a
red area on the lever.

If your vehicle has
power door locks,
push
LOCK on the
power door lock
switch on either front
door. This switch will
lock all the
doors at
once.
To unlock the doors, push on the raised area next to the key sy\
mbol.
Leaving Your Vehicle
If you are leaving the vehicle, take your keys, open your do-or and \
set the
locks from inside. Then get out and close the door.
Tailgate
You can open the
tailgate by pulling up
on the handle while
pulling the tailgate down.
When you put the
tailgate back up, be sure it latches
securely.

Raise the tailgate slightly and
remove both
retaining cables.
Lift the tailgate at the right side and
pull
it out at the
left side.
Reverse the
procedure to
reinstall. Make sure the tailgate
is secure.
Vehicle theft is big business, especially in some cities. Altho\
ugh your vehicle has
a number of theft deterrent features, we know that nothing we
put on it can make it impossible to steal. However, there are ways you can
help.
Key in the Ignition
If you walk away from your vehicle with the keys inside, it’s an easy target
for joy riders or professional thieves
- so don’t do it.
When you park your vehicle and open the driver’s door, you’\
ll hear a chime
reminding you to remove your key from the ignition and take i\
t with you.
Always do this. Your steering wheel will be locked, and
so will your
ignition.
If you have an automatic transmission, taking your key out also
locks your transmission. And remember to lock the doors.

Park in a lighted spot, close all windows and lock your vehicle. Remember
to keep your valuables out
of sight. Put them in a storage area, or take them
with you.
Parking Lots
If you park in a lot where someone will be watching your vehicle, it’s best
to lock it up and take your keys. But what if you have to leave your ignition
key? What if you have to leave something valuable
in your vehicle?
Put your valuables in a storage area, like your glove box.
Lock all the doors except the driver’s.
Then take the door key with you.
New Vehicle “Break-In”
NOTICE:
Your modern vehicle doesn’t need an elaborate ‘70reak-in.” But
it will perform better in the long run if‘ you follow these
guidelines:
Keep your speed at 55 mph (88 km/h) or less for the first
500 miles (804 km).
Don’t drive at any one speed - fast or slow - for the first
500 miles (804 km). Don’t make full-throttle starts.
Avoid making hard stops for the first 200 miles (322 km) or
so. During this time your new brake linings aren’t yet broken
in. Hard stops with new linings can mean premature wear and
earlier replacement. Follow this “b’reaking-in” guideline
every time you get new brake linings.

Use your ignition key to start your vehicle. The ignition key \
lets you turn
the ignition switch to five different positions.

1. OFF
2. RUN
3. START
4. ACC
5. LOCK
ACC (Accessory): ACC lets you use things like the radio and the
windshield wipers when the engine is
off. To get into ACC, push in the key
and turn it toward you. Your steering wheel will remain locked, just as it
was before you inserted the key.
NOTICE:
Prolonged operation of accessories in the ACC position could
drain vour battery and prevent you
from starting your vehicle.
LOCK: This position locks your ignition, steering wheel and transmissi\
on.
It’s a theft deterrent feature. You will only be able to remove your key when
the ignition is turned to
LOCK.
OFF: This position lets you turn off the engine but still turn the steering
wheel. Use
OFF if you must have your vehicle in motion while the engine
is off (for example,
if your vehicle is being pushed).
RUN: This is the position for driving.
START: This starts your engine.
