The positions next to the windows have lap-shoulder belts. Here’s how to
wear one properly.
1. Pick up the latch
plate and pull the belt across you. Don’t let it get
twisted.
2. Push the latch plate into the buckle until it clicks. If the belt stops
before it reaches the buckle, tilt the latch plate and keep pulling until
you can buckle it.
Pull up on the latch plate to make sure it is secure.
If the belt is not long enough, see “Safety Belt Extender” at the end of
this section.
Make sure the release button on the buckle is positioned
so you would
be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if you ever had to.
3. To make the lap
part tight, pull down on the
buckle end of the
belt as you pull
up on the
shoulder part.

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine 6. To tighten the
belt, feed the lap
belt back into the
retractor while
you push down
on the child
restraint.
7. Push and pull the child restraint in different directions to be sure it is
secure.
To remove the child restraint, just unbuckle the vehicle’s safety belt and let
it go back all the way.
The safety belt will move freely again and be ready
to work for an adult or
larger child passenger.
Larger Children
Children who have outgrown child restraints should wear the vehicle’s
safety belts.
If you have the choice, a child should sit next to a window so the child can
wear a lap-shoulder belt and get the additional restraint
a shoulder belt can
provide.

Section
Here you can learn about the many standard and optional features on your
vehicle, and information
on starting, shifting and braking. Also explained
are
the instrument panel and the warning systems that tell you if everything
is working properly
- and what to do if you have a problem.
Keys
A CAUTION:
Leaving young children in a vehicle with the ignition key is
dangerous
for many reasons. A child or others could be badly
injured
or even killed.
They could operate power windows or other controls or even
make the vehicle move. Don’t leave the keys in a vehicle w\
ith
young children.

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine A CAUTION:
It can be dangerous to drive with the tailgate glass, tailgate or
rear doors open because carbon monoxide (CO) gas can come
into your vehicle. You can’t see or smell
CO. It can cause
unconsciousness and even death.
If you must drive with the tailgate glass, tailgate or rear doors
open or
if electrical wiring or other cable connections must pass
through the seal between the body and the tailgate glass, tailgate
or rear doors:
Make sure all windows are shut.
Turn the fan on your heating or cooling system to its highest
speed with the setting on any function. Make sure the
recirculation button is not pressed in. That will force outside
air into your vehicle. See “Comfort Controls” in the Index.
If you have air outlets on or under the instrument panel, open
them all the
way.
See “Engine Exhaust” in the Index.
Tailgate Glass and Tailgate
If your vehicle has a tailgate, you must raise the rear glass before lowering
the tailgate.
.. . ...
To open the glass
from
the outside, use
your door key. With
the key
in the lock,
turn the key clockwise
I to release the glass,
then lift it up.
To release the glass from the inside, use the electric tailgate glass release
switch
on the instrument panel. For more information, see “Fdilgate-
Electric Glass Release”
in the Index.

Park in a lighted spot, close all windows and lock your vehicle. Remember
to keep your valuables out
of sight. Put them in a storage area, or take them
with
you.
Parking Lots
If you park in a lot where someone will be watching your vehicle, it’s best
to lock it up and take your keys. But what if you have to leave your ignition
key? What if you have
to leave something valuable in your vehicle‘?
0 Put your valuables in a storage area, like your glove box.
Lock all the doors except the driver’s.
New Vehicle “Break-ln”
NOTICE:
Your modern vehicle doesn’t need an elaborate “break-in.” But
it will perform better in the long run if you follow these
guidelines:
0 Keep your speed at 55 mph (88 km/h) or less for the first 500
miles (SO4 km).
Don’t drive at any one speed - fast or slow - for the first
500 miles (804 km). Don’t make full-throttle starts.
Avoid making hard stops for the first 200 miles (322 km) or
so. During this time your new brake linings aren’t yet broken
in. Hard stops with new linings can mean premature wear and
earlier replacement. Follow this “breaking-in” guideline
every time you get new brake linings.
Don’t tow a trailer during “break-in.” See “Towing a Trailer”
in the Index for more information.

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine To shift into or out of 4-WHEEL LOW (4L)or NEUTRAL (N):
0 Slow the vehicle to a roll, about 1-3 mph (2-5 kdh) and shift an
automatic transmission into neutral, or with a manual transmission
press the clutch pedal.
Shift the transfer case shift lever in one continuous motion.
Don’t pause in NEUTRAL
(N) as you shift the transfer case into 4-WHEEL
LOW (4L), or your gears could clash.
Remember that driving in 4-WHEEL HIGH (4H) or 4-WHEEL LOW (4L)
may reduce fuel economy. Also, driving in four-wheel drive on dry
pavement could cause your tires to wear faster and make your transfer case
harder
to shift.
Front Axle Locking Feature
I ne front axle locks and unlocks automatically when you shift the transfer
case. Some delay for the axle to lock or unlock is normal. If the outside
temperature is very hot, or the vehicle has been used under hard driving
conditions, there may be a slight delay for the axle to unlock.
Windows
To open your manual
windows, turn the
hand crank on each
door to raise or lower
your side door
windows.
2-35
Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine The driver’s door has a switch for the passenger windows as well. Your
power windows will work when the ignition has been turned to
ACC or
RUN.
Push the rear of the switch with the power window symbol on it to lower the
window.
Push the front of the switch with the power window symbol on
it to raise the
window.
The driver’s window switch also has an “express down” feature that allows
the window to lower without holding the switch. Press and hold the side
of
the window switch marked AUTO for one second to activate the express
down mode. The express down mode can be cancelled at any time by
pressing the opposite side
of the switch. To open the window part way,
lightly tap the switch until the window is at the desired position.
If you have a four-door vehicle and power windows, the power window
switch has a lock-out feature. This feature prevents the rear windows from
operating when the front driver’s-side switch
is in the lock-out position.
When the switch is moved
out of the lock-out position, the rear power
windows will operate again.

Before operating your electric tailgate glass release, see the caution under
“Tailgate Glass, Tailgate and Rear Doors’’ in this section.
The electric hatch
release button lets
you
release the tailgate
glass. To release the
glass, press the top of
the switch button.
Then, lift the window
up
to open.
If you have an automatic transmission, your shift lever must
be in PARK (P)
or NEUTRAL (N) for the release to work. With a manual transmission, you
must apply the parking brake for the release to work.
