Manual gearboxEnsure that the gear lever is in the neutral position.
Do not touch the accelerator.For Diesel engines: Turn the key to the drive position. Wait for the preheater warning lamp to go off, if this has come on.
Turn the key to action the starter (not for more than ten seconds), until the engine starts.
In ambient temperatures lower than 0°C, depress the clutch while actioning the starter to facilitate starting. Then release the clutch pedal slowly.

ESP/ASR
Operating
It comes on for a few seconds each time you switch on the ignition.
If either of the ESP or ASRsystems is active, the warning l a m p fl a s h e s .
For a malfunction
When the vehicle is moving, the lighting of this warning lamp indicates a system malfunction.
Contact a CITROËN dealer.
Function deactivated
The warning lamp remains conti-nuously on.
Front passenger's airbag deactivation

ABS system
The ABS warning lamp lights up when you switch on the ignition: it should go out after a few seconds.
If it does not go out, there could be a system malfunction.

Foot on brake (Electronic Gearbox System)
T h e fl a s h i n g o f t h i s w a r -ning lamp in the instrument panel indicates the need to apply the brake pedal in order to start the engine or engage reverse gear.

The lighting of this warning lamp indicates that the engine is in shutdown mode.

To activate/deactivate rear screen wipe on engaging reverse gear:Press button A.Select, using B, the sub-menu t o p e r s o n a l i s e - c o n fi g u r e y o u r v e h i c l e , t h e n c o n fi r m y o u r choice with a press on C.
Select rear screen wipe, using B.
The system tells you the status (active or inactive) of the function. Modify this status with a press on E.Then please wait for the display to disappear.Note: The activation/deactivation registers immediately.

Check that the windscreen and rear wipers can operate freely when f o r e x a m p l e a b i c y c l e - c a r r i e r i s fi t t e d , o r i n f r e e z i n g c o n d i t i o n s .
Remove any accumulation of snow at the base of the windsc reen.
Changing the wiper blades
If you have to replace them, the wiper blades have to be parked in the maintenance position. For this, switch off the ignition and then within one minute move the wiper control stalk. The wipers stand up in a vertical position.
After replacement, switch on the ignition and move the wiper control stalk so that the wipers resume their normal position.
A. Windscreen wash
To operate the windscreen wash, pull the wiper stalk towards you.
The screen wash is accompanied by a timed wipe of the windscreen, the headlamp wash also activates if the dipped beams are on.
B. Rear screen wipe
First notch
Off.
Second notch
Intermittent rear wipe.
Third notch
Timed rear wash/wipe.
Automatic wipe
When the windscreen wipers are operational and reverse gear is engaged.
Activation/deactivation of this function is possible in the menu " P e r s o n a l i s a t i o n / C o n fi g u r a t i o n " i n the "Main menu".
Deactivation may be necessary when a bicycle-carrier is installed on the tailgate.

Reverse gear
Do not select reverse gear until the vehicle is completely stationary.
Depress the clutch pedal and wait a few moments before gently enga-ging reverse gear.

Automatic gear selection leverParking (Position P).

The automatic gearbox offers you:
Operation in automatic auto-active mode, adapting automatically to your style of driving (Position D).Operation in sequential mode, with manual gear changing (Position M).Operation in Sport or Snow automatic mode (Position Dand by pressing on button Aor B).

The engine can only be started when the lever is at position P or N.
A safety device ensures that starting is impossible in the other positions.
After starting the engine, with selector on P, depress the brake pedal then shift the selector to D, R or M:D for automatic mode.
R for reverse gear.
M to change to manual mode.
The change from position D (driving in automatic mode) to position M(driving in sequential mode) or vice versa can be made at any time.

Automatic forward drive
Sequential forward drive
The gearbox always selects the gear best adapted to the following parameters:Style of driving.
R o a d p r o fi l e .
Vehicle load.
The gearbox then functions in auto-adaptive mode, without any action on your part.
For certain manoeuvres (for example overtaking), it is possible to ob tain maximum acceleration by pressing hard down on the accelerator pedal , which may trigger automatic changedown to a lower gear.
Remarks:During braking, the gearbox may kick down automatically in order to offer an effective engine brake.
If you suddenly lift your foot off the accelerator, the gearbox will guard your safety by not changing up again.
