VISIBILITY
Automatic windscreen wiping
The windscreen wipers operate auto-
matically, without any action on the part
of the driver, if rain is detected (sensor
b e h i n d t h e i n t e r i o r m i r r o r ) , a d a p t i n g t h e i r
speed to the intensity of the rainfall.
Activation
Switching off Operating fault
If an automatic wiping malfunction
occurs, the wipers will operate in inter-
mittent mode.
Have it checked by a CITROËN dealer. Special position of the
windscreen wipers
For optimum and lasting wiping
o f t h e " fl a t - b l a d e " w i p e r b l a d e s ,
it is advisable to:
- handle them with care,
- clean them regularly using soapy water,
- change them approximately every 6 months,
- avoid using them to retain cardboard on the windscreen.
Do not cover the rain sensor,
linked with the brightness sensor
and located in the centre of the
windscreen behind the interior
mirror.
Switch off the automatic wiping
when using an automatic car
wash.
In winter, it is advisable to wait
until the windscreen is completely
clear of ice before activating the
automatic wiping.
The automatic wiping must be re-
activated if the ignition has been
off for more than one minute, by
pushing stalk
A downwards.
In the minute following switching off of the
ignition, any action on the stalk positions
the wipers vertically.
This action enables you to position the
wiper blades for winter parking, cleaning
or replacement without damaging the
bonnet.
To park the wipers after this has been
done, switch on the ignition and operate
the stalk.
This is controlled manually by the driver by
pushing stalk
A to the "AUTO" position.
This is controlled manually by the driver
by moving stalk A upwards and returning
it to position "0" . It is accompanied by the indica-
tor lamp in the instrument panel
switching off and a message on
the multifunction screen.

Version without Zenith windscreen
Front side reading lamps
W i t h t h e i g n i t i o n o n , t h e fi r s t p r e s s o f
the corresponding switch switches
on the reading lamp concerned in
permanent lighting mode.
Following a second press, it comes on:
- when the vehicle is unlocked, - when the key is removed from
the ignition,
- when a door is opened, - when the remote control locking
button is pressed, in order to
locate your vehicle. In permanent lighting mode, dif-
ferent lighting times are available:
- with the ignition off, approxi-
mately ten minutes,
- in energy economy mode, ap- proximately thirty seconds,
- with the engine running, un- limited.
Version with Zenith windscreen In this position, the courtesy
lamp comes on gradually:
- when the vehicle is unlocked,
- when the key is removed from the ignition,
- when a door is opened,
- when the remote control locking but- ton is activated, in order to locate your
vehicle.
It switches off gradually:
- when the vehicle is locked,
- when the ignition is switched on,
- 30 seconds after the last door is closed.
Permanently off.
Permanent lighting.
It switches off gradually:
- when the vehicle is locked,
- when the ignition is switched on,
- 30 seconds after the last door is closed.
To switch off the rear courtesy lamp,
place it in the "permanently off" position.

VISIBILITY
AMBIENCE LIGHTING
The dimmed passenger compartment
lighting improves visibility in the vehicle
when the light is poor.
Switching on
At night, the illumination of footwell and
the central dashboard stoarge compart-
ment comes on automatically when the
sidelamps are switched on. Switching off
The ambience lighting switches off au-
tomatically when the sidelamps are
switched off.
It can be switched off manually using
the instrument panel lighting rheostat
button.
With the lighting on, press several
times on the left hand button of the
instrument panel to progressively
reduce the dashboard lighting level.
Press again to reduce the lighting
level to the minimum and switch off
the ambience lighting. This comes on automatically when the
boot is opened and switches off auto-
matically when the boot is closed.
BOOT LIGHTING
Different lighting times are avail-
able:
- when the ignition is off, ap-
proximately ten minutes,
- in energy economy mode, ap- proximately thirty seconds,
- when the engine is running, no limit.
On certain versions, three lamps locat-
ed in the support between the roof and
the automatic day/night interior mirror
come on as well.

TRAJECTORY CONTROL
SYSTEMS
Anti-skid regulation (ASR) and
electronic stability programme
(ESP)
The anti-skid regulation (also known as
T r a c t i o n C o n t r o l ) o p t i m i s e s t r a c t i o n t o
p r e v e n t s k i d d i n g o f t h e w h e e l s , b y a c t -
ing on the brakes of the driving wheels
and on the engine.
T h e e l e c t r o n i c s t a b i l i t y p r o g r a m m e a c t s
on the brake of one or more wheels and
o n t h e e n g i n e t o k e e p t h e v e h i c l e o n t h e
trajectory required by the driver.
Activation
These systems are activated automati-
cally each time the vehicle is started.
T h e y c o m e i n t o o p e r a t i o n i n t h e e v e n t
o f a g r i p o r t r a j e c t o r y p r o b l e m . T h i s i s i n d i c a t e d b y fl a s h i n g o f
t h i s w a r n i n g l a m p o n t h e i n s t r u -
m e n t p a n e l . Deactivation
I n e x c e p t i o n a l c o n d i t i o n s ( s t a r t i n g a v e -
hicle which is bogged down, stuck in
snow, on soft ground...), it may be ad-
visable to deactivate the ASR and ESP
systems, so that the wheels can move
f r e e l y a n d r e g a i n g r i p .
Press the "ESP OFF" button, located
on the left below the steering wheel.
I f t h i s w a r n i n g l a m p c o m e s o n i n
t h e i n s t r u m e n t p a n e l a n d t h e i n -
d i c a t o r l a m p o n t h e b u t t o n c o m e s
on, this indicates that the ASR and
ESP systems are deactivated.
Reactivation
These systems are reactivated automat-
ically each time the ignition is switched
b a c k o n o r f r o m 3 0 m p h ( 5 0 k m / h ) .
Press the "ESP OFF" button again
to reactivate them manually. Operating fault
I f t h i s w a r n i n g l a m p c o m e s o n ,
a c c o m p a n i e d b y a n a u d i b l e s i g -
nal and a message on the mul-
tifunction screen, this indicates
a malfunction of these systems.
Have the systems checked by a
CITROËN dealer.
T h e E S P / A S R s y s t e m s o f f e r e x -
c e p t i o n a l s a f e t y i n n o r m a l d r i v i n g ,
but this should not encourage the
driver to take extra risks or drive
a t h i g h s p e e d .
The correct functioning of these
s y s t e m s d e p e n d s o n o b s e r v a t i o n
of the manufacturer's recommen-
dations regarding the wheels
(tyres and rims), the braking
c o m p o n e n t s , t h e e l e c t r o n i c
c o m p o n e n t s a n d t h e C I T R O Ë N
a s s e m b l y a n d o p e r a t i o n p r o c e -
dures.

SEAT BELTS
Front seat belts
T h e f r o n t s e a t b e l t s a r e fi t t e d w i t h a p r e -
tensioning and force limiting system.
T h i s s y s t e m i m p r o v e s s a f e t y i n t h e f r o n t
s e a t s i n t h e e v e n t o f a f r o n t i m p a c t .
D e p e n d i n g o n t h e s e v e r i t y o f t h e i m -
p a c t , t h e p r e t e n s i o n i n g s y s t e m i n s t a n t l y
tightens the seat belts against the body
o f t h e o c c u p a n t s .
T h e p r e t e n s i o n i n g s e a t b e l t s a r e a c t i v e
when the ignition is on.
T h e f o r c e l i m i t e r r e d u c e s t h e p r e s s u r e
of the seat belt on the chest of the occu-
p a n t , s o i n c r e a s i n g t h e i r p r o t e c t i o n .
Fastening
P u l l t h e s t r a p , t h e n i n s e r t t h e t o n g u e
in the buckle.
Check that the seat belt is fastened
c o r r e c t l y b y p u l l i n g t h e s t r a p . Unfastening
Press the red button on the buckle.
Guide the seat belt as it is reeled in.
Seat belt not fastened/
unfastened warning lamp When the ignition is switched on,
t h i s w a r n i n g l a m p c o m e s o n i n
t h e i n s t r u m e n t p a n e l , i f t h e d r i v e r
a n d / o r t h e f r o n t p a s s e n g e r h a s
not fastened their seat belt.

f r o n t p a s s e n g e r f a s t e n s t h e i r s e a t b e l t . Rear seat belts

AIRBAGS
System designed to maximise the safety
o f t h e o c c u p a n t s ( w i t h t h e e x c e p t i o n o f
t h e r e a r c e n t r e p a s s e n g e r ) i n t h e e v e n t
o f v i o l e n t c o l l i s i o n s . I t s u p p l e m e n t s t h e
action of the force-limiting seat belts
( w i t h t h e e x c e p t i o n o f t h e r e a r c e n t r e
p a s s e n g e r ) .
If a collision occurs, the electronic de-
tectors record and analyse the front and
s i d e i m p a c t s s u s t a i n e d i n t h e i m p a c t
d e t e c t i o n z o n e s :
- i n t h e c a s e o f a s e r i o u s i m p a c t , t h e airbags are triggered instantly and
p r o t e c t t h e o c c u p a n t s o f t h e v e h i c l e
( w i t h t h e e x c e p t i o n o f t h e r e a r c e n t r e
p a s s e n g e r ) ; i m m e d i a t e l y a f t e r t h e
i m p a c t , t h e a i r b a g s d e fl a t e r a p i d l y
so that they do not hinder visibility
o r t h e e x i t o f t h e o c c u p a n t s ,
- i n t h e c a s e o f a m i n o r o r r e a r i m p a c t or in certain roll-over conditions, the
a i r b a g s w i l l n o t b e t r i g g e r e d ; t h e
s e a t b e l t a l o n e i s s u f fi c i e n t t o p r o -
v i d e o p t i m u m p r o t e c t i o n i n t h e s e
situations.
The airbags do not operate when
the ignition is switched off.
T h i s e q u i p m e n t w i l l o n l y o p e r a t e
o n c e . I f a s e c o n d i m p a c t o c c u r s
(during the same or a subse-
quent accident), the airbag will
n o t o p e r a t e . Impact detection zones

Triggering of the airbag(s) is ac-
c o m p a n i e d b y a s l i g h t e m i s s i o n
of harmless smoke and a noise,
d u e t o t h e a c t i v a t i o n o f t h e p y r o -
t e c h n i c c a r t r i d g e i n c o r p o r a t e d i n
the system.
This smoke is not harmful, but
s e n s i t i v e i n d i v i d u a l s m a y e x p e r i -
ence slight irritation.
The noise of the detonation may
result in a slight loss of hearing
for a short time. Front airbags
S y s t e m w h i c h p r o t e c t s t h e d r i v e r a n d
f r o n t p a s s e n g e r i n t h e e v e n t o f a s e r i -
o u s f r o n t i m p a c t i n o r d e r t o l i m i t t h e r i s k
of injury to the head and chest.
T h e d r i v e r ' s a i r b a g i s i n c o r p o r a t e d i n
t h e c e n t r e o f t h e s t e e r i n g w h e e l ; t h e
f r o n t p a s s e n g e r ' s a i r b a g i s i n c o r p o r a t e d
in the dashboard above the glove box.
Activation
The airbags are triggered simultaneous- l y , u n l e s s t h e p a s s e n g e r ' s f r o n t a i r b a g
is disarmed, in the event of a serious
f r o n t i m p a c t a p p l i e d t o a l l o r p a r t o f t h e
f r o n t i m p a c t z o n e

c e n t r e l i n e o f t h e v e h i c l e o n a h o r i z o n t a l
p l a n e a n d d i r e c t e d f r o m t h e f r o n t t o t h e
rear of the vehicle.
T h e f r o n t a i r b a g i n fl a t e s b e t w e e n t h e
f r o n t o c c u p a n t o f t h e v e h i c l e a n d t h e
dashboard to cushion their forward
movement.

Deactivation
O n l y t h e p a s s e n g e r ' s f r o n t a i r b a g c a n
be deactivated:
with the ignition off , insert the key
i n t h e p a s s e n g e r a i r b a g d e a c t i v a t i o n
switch 1 ,
turn it to the "OFF" p o s i t i o n ,
t h e n , r e m o v e t h e k e y k e e p i n g t h e
s w i t c h i n t h i s p o s i t i o n .
T h i s w a r n i n g l a m p c o m e s o n i n
t h e i n s t r u m e n t p a n e l w h e n t h e
ignition is on and until the air-
bag is re-activated. To guarantee the safety of your
c h i l d , i t i s i m p e r a t i v e t h a t t h e
p a s s e n g e r ' s f r o n t a i r b a g i s d i s -
armed when you install a "rear
facing" child seat on the front
p a s s e n g e r s e a t .
Otherwise, the child would risk
being seriously injured or killed if
the airbag were triggered.
Reactivation
When you remove the child seat, turn
switch 1 to the "ON" p o s i t i o n t o r e -
activate the airbag and so assure the
s a f e t y o f y o u r f r o n t p a s s e n g e r i n t h e
e v e n t o f a n i m p a c t .
With the ignition on, this warn-
i n g l a m p c o m e s o n i n t h e i n s t r u -
m e n t p a n e l f o r a p p r o x i m a t e l y
o n e m i n u t e , i f t h e p a s s e n g e r ' s
front airbag is activated. Operating fault
I f t h i s w a r n i n g l a m p c o m e s o n o n
t h e i n s t r u m e n t p a n e l , a c c o m p a n i e d
by an audible warning and a mes-
sage on the multifunction screen,
contact a CITROËN dealer to have the sys-
tem checked. The airbags may no longer be
t r i g g e r e d i n t h e e v e n t o f a s e r i o u s i m p a c t .
I f t h i s w a r n i n g l a m p fl a s h e s ,
contact a CITROËN dealer.
T h e p a s s e n g e r ' s f r o n t a i r b a g
may no longer be triggered in
t h e e v e n t o f a s e r i o u s i m p a c t .
If at least one of the two airbag
w a r n i n g l a m p s c o m e o n c o n t i n u -
ously, do not install a child seat
o n t h e f r o n t p a s s e n g e r s e a t .
Have the system checked by a
CITROËN dealer.

DRIVING
Manual operation
Select position M for sequential
changing of the four gears.
Push the lever towards the + sign to
change up a gear.
Pull the lever towards the - sign to
change down a gear.
It is only possible to change from one
gear to another if the vehicle speed and
engine speed permit; otherwise, the
g e a r b o x w i l l o p e r a t e t e m p o r a r i l y i n a u t o -
matic mode.
D disappears and the gears
engaged appear in succession
on the instrument panel.
In the event of the engine la-
bouring or over-revving, the
g e a r s e l e c t e d fl a s h e s f o r a f e w s e -
conds, then the actual gear engaged is
displayed.
It is possible to change from position D
( a u t o m a t i c ) t o p o s i t i o n M ( m a n u a l ) a t
any time.
When the vehicle is stationary or moving
v e r y s l o w l y , t h e g e a r b o x s e l e c t s g e a r M1
automatically.
The sport and snow programmes do not
operate in manual mode. Invalid value during manual
operation
This symbol is displayed if a
gear is not engaged correctly
(selector between two posi-
t i o n s ) .
Stopping the vehicle
Before switching off the engine, you
can engage position P or N to place the
g e a r b o x i n n e u t r a l .
In both cases, apply the parking brake
to immobilise the vehicle.
If the lever is not in position P ,
when the driver's door is opened
o r a p p r o x i m a t e l y 4 5 s e c o n d s a f t e r
the ignition is switched off, a mes-
sage appears in the multifunction
screen.
Return the lever to position P ;
the message disappears. There is a risk of damage to the
g e a r b o x :
- if you press the accelerator
and brake pedals at the same
time,
- if you force the movement of the gear lever from the P
position to another position
w h e n t h e b a t t e r y i s fl a t .
Operating fault
When the ignition is on,
the lighting of this warn-
ing lamp, accompanied
by an audible signal and
a message on the multifunction screen,
i n d i c a t e s a g e a r b o x m a l f u n c t i o n .
I n t h i s c a s e , t h e g e a r b o x s w i t c h e s t o
emergency mode and is locked in 3 rd
gear. You may feel a substantial knock
when changing from P to R and from N
to R . This will not cause any damage to
t h e g e a r b o x .
D o n o t e x c e e d 6 0 m p h ( 1 0 0 k m / h ) , l o c a l
speed restrictions permitting.
Contact a CITROËN dealer as soon as
possible.
