Windscreen/rear screen wash and headlamp w a s h fl u i d
Use CITROËN-approved products wherever possible.
Capacity: See “Capacities”.
Engine coolant
T h e fl u i d l e v e l s h o u l d b e between the marks MIN. and MAX. on the header tank.
E n g i n e h o t , w a i t a t l e a s t 1 5 m i n u t e s .
Quality: See “Maintenance Guide”.
Never do anything relating to the cooling system of an engine that is hot.
12V battery
See “Starting with a slave battery”.
Engine oil
Check the engine oil level on horizontal ground with the engine having been s w i t c h e d o f f f o r a t l e a s t 1 0 m i n -utes.
Quality: See “Maintenance Guide”.
Pull out the manual dipstick.
The level should be between the marks MIN.and MAX. on the gauge.
It must never exceed the maximum.

Engine oil
Check the engine oil level on hori-zontal ground with the engine hav-ing been switched off for at least 1 0 m i n u t e s .
Pull out the manual dipstick.
The level should be between the marks MIN. and MAX. on the gauge.
Topping up engine oil

C h e c k t h e d i p s t i c k a f t e r fi l l i n g .
It must never exceed the maximum.
Screw the cap back on and close the bonnet.

Checking the level and topping up w i t h fl u i d m u s t a l w a y s b e d o n e w i t h the engine cold.
Engine hot
Release the protection cover.
W a i t 1 5 m i n u t e s o r f o r t h e t e m p e r - a t u r e t o b e l o w e r t h a n 1 0 0 ° C a n d then carefully unscrew the cap so as to allow the pressure to drop, protecting yourself with, say, a cloth.
Topping up the coolant
T h e fl u i d l e v e l s h o u l d b e b e t w e e n t h e m a r k s MIN. and MAX.on the header tank.

Draining water from the fuel fi l t e r
Purge regularly (at each oil change).
To drain the water, slacken the bleed screw or the water-in-diesel-fuel sensor located at the base of t h e fi l t e r .
Operate until the water has com-pletely drained away.
Then retighten the bleed screw or the water in diesel fuel sensor.

Priming the fuel system
In the event of running out of fuel: A f t e r fi l l i n g ( 5 l i t r e s m i n i m u m ) , operate the manual priming pump until some resistance is felt.
Operate the starter motor while depressing the accelerator pedal slightly until the engine starts.
I f t h e e n g i n e f a i l s t o s t a r t a t t h e fi r s t a t t e m p t , w a i t 1 5 s e c o n d s b e f o r e trying again.
If the engine fails to start after sev-eral attempts, repeat the procedure from the beginning.
When the engine is idling, acceler-ate slightly to complete the bleed-ing of the circuit.

Starting the engine after disconnecting and reconnecting the batteryTurn the ignition key.
Wait approximately 1 minute before operating the starter in order to allow the electronic systems to re-initialise. It may be necessary to enter the radio code.

Starting the engine with an assisting battery
If the battery is discharged, it is possible to use either a separate emergency battery or a battery on another vehicle.A. Dischargedbattery (Under the bonnet).B. Assisting battery.C. Earth point on broken down vehicle.
C h e c k t h a t t h e a s s i s t i n g b a t t e r y h a s s u f fi c i e n t v o l t a g e ( 1 2 V ) .
If you use the battery on another vehicle, stop the engine on the latter. The two vehicles must not come into direct contact wit h each other.
Connect the cables according to the order indicated in the dia-ordergram. Check that the leads are well secured (risk of sparks).
Start the engine of the assisting vehicle. Let the engine run for around 1 minute at a slightly accelerated idle.
Operate the starter on the vehicle being assisted.
It is essential to follow the indicated sequence correctly .
N e v e r a p p r o a c h w i t h a fl a m e o r c r e a t e s p a r k s i n t h e v i c i n i t y of the battery (explosive gas).
The battery contains dilute sulphuric acid which is highly corrosive.
When handling batteries, always protect your face a nd especially your eyes.
In the event of any contact with the skin, rinse immediatel y with copious amounts of fresh water.
Advice
Do not touch the leads during the operation.
Do not lean over the batteries.
Disconnect the cables in reverse order, making sure they do not touch together.
