SYSTEMS
Group of supplementary systems
which help you to obtain optimum
braking in complete safety in emer-
gency situations:
- anti-lock braking system (ABS),
- electronic brake force distribu-tion (EBFD),
- emergency braking assistance (EBA).
Anti-lock braking system
and electronic brake force
distribution
Linked systems which improve the
stability and manoeuvrability of your
vehicle when braking, in particular
on poor or slippery surfaces.
Activation
The anti-lock braking system comes
into operation automatically when
there is a risk of wheel lock.
Normal operation of the ABS may
make itself felt by slight vibration of
the brake pedal. Operating fault
When braking in an emergency,
p r e s s v e r y fi r m l y w i t h o u t r e l e a s i n g
the pressure. If this warning lamp comes
on, accompanied by an au-
dible signal and a message
on the multifunction screen,
it indicates a malfunction of the anti-
lock braking system which could re-
sult in loss of control of the vehicle
when braking.
If this warning lamp comes on,
together with the STOP and
ABS warning lamps, accom-
panied by an audible signal
and a message on the multifunction
screen, it indicates a malfunction of
the electronic brake force distribution
which could result in loss of control of
the vehicle when braking.
You must stop as soon as it is
safe to do so.
In either case, contact a CITROËN
dealer.
When replacing wheels (tyres and
rims), ensure that they conform to the
manufacturer's recommendations.
Emergency braking assistance
System which, in an emergency,
enables you to obtain the optimum
braking pressure more quickly, thus
reducing the stopping distance.
Activation
It is triggered by the speed at which
the brake pedal is pressed.
The effect of this is a reduction in
the resistance of the pedal and an
i n c r e a s e i n b r a k i n g e f fi c i e n c y .
When braking in an emergency,
p r e s s fi r m l y w i t h o u t r e l e a s i n g t h e
pressure.

The driver must ensure that passen-
gers use the seat belts correctly and
that they are all restrained securely
before setting off.
Wherever you are seated in the ve-
hicle, always fasten your seat belt,
even for short journeys.
Do not invert the seat belt buckles
a s t h e y w i l l n o t f u l fi l t h e i r r o l e f u l l y .
T h e s e a t b e l t s a r e fi t t e d w i t h a n i n -
ertia reel permitting automatic ad-
justment of the length of the strap
to your size. The seat belt is stored
automatically when not in use.
Before and after use, ensure that the
seat belt is reeled in correctly.
The lower part of the strap must be
positioned as low as possible on the
pelvis.
The upper part must be positioned
in the hollow of the shoulder.
T h e i n e r t i a r e e l s a r e fi t t e d w i t h a n
automatic locking device which
comes into operation in the event
of a collision, emergency braking or
if the vehicle rolls over. You can re-
l e a s e t h e d e v i c e b y p u l l i n g fi r m l y o n
the strap and releasing it so that it
re-winds slightly. In order to be effective, a seat belt
must:
- be tightened as close to the body
as possible,
- be pulled in front of you with a smooth movement, checking
that it does not twist,
-
be used to restrain only one person,
-
not bear any trace of cuts or fraying,
- n o t b e c o n v e r t e d o r m o d i fi e d t o avoid affecting its performance. Recommendations for children
Use a suitable child seat if the pas-
senger is less than 12 years old or
shorter than one and a half metres.
Never use the same seat belt to se-
cure more than one person.
Never allow a child to travel on your
lap.
In accordance with current safety
regulations, all repairs and checks
must be carried out by a CITROËN
dealer who guarantees that the work
is carried out correctly.
Have your seat belts checked regu-
larly by a CITROËN dealer and par-
ticularly if the straps show signs of
damage.
Clean the seat belt straps with soapy
w a t e r o r a t e x t i l e c l e a n i n g p r o d u c t ,
sold by CITROËN dealers.
After folding or moving a seat or rear
bench seat, ensure that the seat belt
is positioned and reeled in correctly. In the event of an impact
Depending on the nature and
seriousness of the impacts , the
pre-tensioning device may be trig-
gered before and independently of
the airbags. Triggering of the pre-
tensioners is accompanied by a
slight discharge of harmless smoke
and a noise, due to the activation of
the pyrotechnic cartridge incorporated in the system.
In all cases, the airbag warning lamp
comes on.
Following an impact, have the seat
belts system checked, and if neces-
sary replaced, by a CITROËN dealer.

AIRBAGS
S y s t e m d e s i g n e d t o m a x i m i s e t h e
safety of the occupants (with the
e x c e p t i o n o f t h e r e a r c e n t r e p a s -
senger) in the event of violent col-
lisions. It supplements the action of
the force-limiting seat belts.
If a collision occurs, the electronic
detectors record and analyse the
front and side impacts sustained in
the impact detection zones:
- in the case of a serious impact,
the airbags are triggered instant-
ly and protect the occupants of
t h e v e h i c l e ( w i t h t h e e x c e p t i o n o f
the rear centre passenger); im-
mediately after the impact, the
a i r b a g s d e fl a t e r a p i d l y s o t h a t
they do not hinder visibility or the
e x i t o f t h e o c c u p a n t s ,
- in the case of a minor or rear impact or in certain roll-over
conditions, the airbags will not
be triggered; the seat belt alone
i s s u f fi c i e n t t o p r o v i d e o p t i m u m
protection in these situations.
The airbags do not operate
when the ignition is switched
off.
This equipment will only operate
once. If a second impact occurs (dur-
ing the same or a subsequent acci-
dent), the airbag will not operate. Impact detection zones
A. Front impact zone.
B. Side impact zone.
Triggering of the airbag(s) is ac-
companied by a slight emission of
harmless smoke and a noise, due to
the activation of the pyrotechnic car-
tridge incorporated in the system.
This smoke is not harmful, but sen-
s i t i v e i n d i v i d u a l s m a y e x p e r i e n c e
slight irritation.
The noise of the detonation may
result in a slight loss of hearing for
a short time. Front airbags
System which protects the head and
chest of the driver and front passenger
in the event of a front impact.
The driver's airbag is incorporated
in the centre of the steering wheel;
the front passenger's airbag is incor-
porated in the dashboard above the
g l o v e b o x .
Activation
The airbags are triggered simultane-
ously, unless the passenger's front
airbag is deactivated, in the event of
a serious front impact applied to all
or part of the front impact zone
A ,
in the longitudinal centreline of the
vehicle on a horizontal plane and di-
rected from the front to the rear of
the vehicle.
T h e f r o n t a i r b a g i n fl a t e s b e t w e e n t h e
front occupant of the vehicle and the
dashboard to cushion their forward
movement.

ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE
The electric parking brake operates
as follows:
- Automatic application/release
Application is automatic when the engine stops, release is automatic
on use of the accelerator.
- Manual application/release
Manual application/release of the parking brake is possible
by pulling control lever A while
pressing the brake pedal. Manual application
With the vehicle stationary, to apply
the parking brake whether the engine
is running or not,
pull control lever A . Manual release
With the ignition on or the engine
running, to release the parking
brake, press on the brake pedal, or
the accelerator,
pull then release
control lever A .

the extinction of the warning
lamp P in control lever A and
in the instrument panel,
- the display of a message "Handbrake off" in the multifunc-
tion screen.
The application of the parking brake

tion screen.
When the driver’s door is
opened with the engine running,
a beep is heard and a message
displayed if the parking brake has not
been applied.
Before getting out of the vehicle, check
that the warning lamp P i s o n fi x e d i n t h e
i n s t r u m e n t p a n e l ( n o t fl a s h i n g ) .
The full application of the parking
b r a k e i s c o n fi r m e d b y :
If you pull control lever A
without pressing the brake
pedal, the parking brake
will not be released and
the "Foot on brake" warn-
ing lamp will come on in
the instrument panel.

Automatic application,
engine off
With the vehicle stationary, the park-
ing brake is automatically applied
when the engine is switched off.
The application of the parking brake

Automatic release
The electric parking brake releases
automatically and progressively
when you press the accelerator:
Manual gearbox ( fi r s t g e a r o r
reverse gear engaged) : press
down fully on the clutch pedal
then press on the accelerator
pedal and move off.
Automatic gearbox : accelerate
with the selector in position D , M
or R .
Electronic gearbox : accelerate
with the selector in position A , M
or R .
Full release of the parking brake is
c o n fi r m e d b y : - the extinction of warning lamp P in control lever A
and in the instrument
panel,
- the display of a message "Handbrake off" in the multifunc-
tion screen.
When stationary, with the engine
running, do not press the acceler-
ator pedal unnecessarily, as you
may release the parking brake.
Maximum application
If necessary, you can use maximum
application of the parking brake. It
is obtained by means of a long pull
on control lever A , until you see the
message "Handbrake on" and an
audible signal is heard.
Maximum application is essential:
- when towing a caravan or a trail- er, if the automatic functions are
activated but you are applying
the parking brake manually,
- when the gradient you are parked on is variable in its effect (e.g. on
a f e r r y , i n a l o r r y , d u r i n g t o w i n g ) ,
- when towing, when loaded or when parking on a gradient, turn
the front wheels towards the
pavement and engage a gear
when you park,
- after a maximum application, the release time will be longer.
Before leaving the vehicle,
check that warning lamp P
in the instrument panel is
o n fi x e d , n o t fl a s h i n g .
Never leave a child alone inside the
vehicle with the ignition on, as they
could release the parking brake.
- the display of a message
"Handbrake on" in the multifunc-
tion screen.
The normal operating sound will con-
fi r m t o y o u t h e a p p l i c a t i o n / r e l e a s e o f
the electric parking brake.

To immobilise the vehicle,
engine running
To immobilise the vehicle when sta-
tionary with the engine running, you
must apply the parking brake manu-
ally by pulling on control lever A .
The application of the parking brake
i s c o n fi r m e d b y : - the lighting of warning lamp P in control A and
in the instrument panel,
- the display of a message "Handbrake on" in the multifunc-
tion screen.
When the driver’s door is opened, a
beep is heard and a message dis-
played if the parking brake has not
been applied.
Before leaving the vehicle,
check that warning lamp P
in the instrument panel is
o n fi x e d ( n o t fl a s h i n g ) . Particular situations
In certain situations (e.g. starting
t h e e n g i n e ) , t h e p a r k i n g b r a k e c a n
automatically alter its force. This is
normal operation.
To move your vehicle without start-
i n g t h e e n g i n e ( t o w i n g , e t c . . . ) , b u t
with the
ignition on , press the brake
pedal and release the parking brake
by pulling then releasing control
lever A .
The full release of the parking
b r a k e i s c o n fi r m e d b y t h e e x t i n c -
tion of warning lamp P ( r e d ) i n t h e
instrument panel and the display of
a message "Handbrake off" in the
multifunction screen.
If the parking brake malfunctions
while applied or if the battery runs
fl a t , a n e m e r g e n c y r e l e a s e r e m a i n s
possible.
Activation/Deactivation of the
automatic functions *
The automatic application when
the engine is switched off and the
automatic release when you press
the accelerator can be deactivated.
Activation/deactivation is performed
u s i n g t h e c o n fi g u r a t i o n m e n u o f t h e
multifunction screen. To do so, se-
lect "Vehicle parameters/Comfort/
Automatic handbrake."
The deactivation of these
f u n c t i o n s i s c o n fi r m e d b y t h e
lighting of this warning lamp
on the instrument panel.
* According to country
The deactivation of these func-
t i o n s i s c o n fi r m e d b y t h e l i g h t i n g o f
this warning lamp in the instrument
panel. With the automatic functions
deactivated, the application and re-
lease of the parking brake are done
manually.

Dynamic emergency braking
In the event of a failure of the ve-
hicle’s main braking system or in
an exceptional situation (e.g. driver
t a k e n i l l , u n d e r i n s t r u c t i o n , e t c ) a c o n -
tinuous pull on the control lever A will
stop the vehicle.
The electronic stability programme
( E S P ) p r o v i d e s s t a b i l i t y d u r i n g d y -
namic emergency braking.
If the dynamic emergency braking
malfunctions, one of the following
messages will be displayed in the
multifunction screen:
- "Parking brake faulty".
- "Parking brake control faulty". If a failure of the ESP sys-
tem is signalled by the light-
ing of this warning lamp,
then braking stability is not
guaranteed. In this event, stability
must be assured by the driver by
repeating alternate "pull-release"
actions on control lever A .
The dynamic emergency
braking must only be used in
exceptional circumstances.

- Hill start assist is not available.
To apply the electric parking brake:
Immobilise the vehicle and switch off the ignition
Pull the control lever for at least 5 seconds or until maximum
application.
Switch on the ignition and check that the electric parking brake
warning lamps are on.
- Application may take longer than in normal operation.
- If warning lamp P fl a s h e s o r i f t h e w a r n i n g l a m p s d o n o t c o m e
on when the ignition is switched on, this method does not work.
Have it checked by a CITROËN dealer.
To release the electric parking brake:
Switch on the ignition.
Pull the control lever and hold it for approximately 3 second s.
5 Display of message "
Parking brake control
faulty – auto parking brake activated " and
the following warning lamps:

- Manual application/release of the electric parking brake a nd

6 Battery fault - Lighting of the battery warning lamp ma
kes it essential to stop

vehicle.
- Apply the electric parking brake before switchi ng off the engine.

Displays on the instrument panel
- The selector lever position is dis-played in the instrument panel,
on the left on the A and C multi-
function screens and on the right
on NaviDrive and MyWay multi-
function screens.
- A back-lit position grille associated with the selector lever shows the
position selected.
When the ignition is on,
lighting of the service
warning lamp, accompa-
nied by an audible signal and
the message "Gearbox faulty"
indicates a malfunction.
Consult a CITROËN dealer.
For safety:
Position N can only be disen-
gaged if you are pressing the
brake pedal.
If the gearbox is in position N
but the selector lever position is
different, reposition the selector
lever on N in order to be able to
start. Moving off
To start the engine, the selector
lever must be in position N .
P r e s s fi r m l y o n t h e b r a k e p e d a l .
Operate the starter.
When the engine is running,
place the selector lever on R , A
or M as desired.
In the instrument panel, check
the position engaged.
Release the brake pedal and ac-
celerate.
If the selector lever is not in posi-
tion N , and/or if the brake pedal is not
pressed, the corresponding warning
l a m p ( s ) a r e d i s p l a y e d a n d a m e s -
sage informs you that at least one of
these two conditions is not met.
In this case, the engine will not start,
recommence the above procedure.
6-SPEED ELECTRONIC GEARBOX SYSTEM
The 6-speed electronic gearbox of-
fers a choice between the comfort of
fully automatic operation or the driving
pleasure of manual gear changing.
You have a choice of two driving
modes:
-
automatic mode for automatic con-
trol of the gears by the gearbox,
- sequential mode for manual
changing of the gears by the
driver.
automatic mode: selector lever 2
in position A .
manual mode: selector lever 2 in
position M .
In automatic mode, instant manual
operation is possible any time you
operate one of the paddles 1 .

Manual operation
Position of the selector lever for
manual gear changing.
Move the selector lever
to position M .
Pull the " + " paddle to change up
a gear.
Pull the " - " paddle to change
down a gear.
- If the vehicle stops or reduces speed (for example when ap-
p r o a c h i n g a s t o p s i g n ) , t h e g e a r -
box changes down automatically
t o fi r s t g e a r .
- In sequential mode, it is not nec- essary to release the accelerator
during gear changes.
- A request to change gear is ac- cepted only if the engine speed
permits it. - For safety reasons, depending
on the engine speed, a change
up or down may be performed
automatically.
- It is possible at any time to move from position D (driving in auto-
m a t i c m o d e ) t o p o s i t i o n M (driv-
i n g i n s e q u e n t i a l m o d e ) o r v i c e
versa.
Flashing of the indicator for
the position requested sig-
nals that this position is not
yet obtained.
I f t h e i n d i c a t o r i s o n fi x e d , t h e p o s i -
t i o n i s c o n fi r m e d .
Display of a dash in the rev counter
indicates a malfunction. Consult a
CITROËN dealer.
Lighting of the service warning
lamp accompanied by a message
and an audible signal indicates an
operating fault. In this case:
- a marked snatching may be felt when selecting R for reverse
gear,
- the gearbox is locked in one gear,
-
do not exceed a speed of 60 mph
( a p p r o x i m a t e l y 1 0 0 k m / h ) .
