RUNNING IN
Petrol version
For the first 600 miles (1,000 km), do not exceed 78 mph (130 km/h) in the highest gear, or 3,000 to 3,500 rpm.
After 600 miles (1,000 km), you may use your vehicle normally. However, it is only after 1,800 miles (3,000 km) have been covered that you may rea- sonably expect full performance.
Service intervals: refer to the Mainte- nance Service Booklet for your vehicle.
Diesel version
For the first 900 miles (1,500 km), do not exceed 2,500 rpm. After complet- ing this mileage you may drive faster, although you may only expect top p e r f o r m a n c e a f t e r a p p r o x i m a t e l y 3,600 miles (6,000 km).
During the running in period, do not ac- celerate hard while the engine is still cold and do not let the engine over-rev.
Service intervals: refer to the Mainte- nance Service Booklet for your vehicle.

Turn the key to starter position D with- out depressing the accelerator pedal.
Release the key as soon as the engine starts.
Starting the engine
Special feature on vehicles equipped with an engine immobiliser system
In very cold conditions (temperatures below –20°C): so that it is easier to start the engine, switch on the ignition for several seconds before starting the engine.
Make sure the engine immobiliser is not activated. Refer to the information on the “Engine immobiliser” in Section 1.
Petrol injection
Engine warm or cold
– Turn the key to the start position
without depressing the accelera- tor.
– Release the key as soon as the
engine starts.

STARTING/STOPPING THE ENGINE
Never leave your vehicle with the keys inside when leaving a child (or \
animal) in the car, even for a short period.
The reason for this is that the child may endanger himself or others by starting the engine, activating equipment such
as the window winders for example, or locking the doors.
Risk of serious injury.
Never switch off the ignition before the vehicle has stopped completely. Once the engine has stopped, the brake servo, power assisted steering and passive safety equipment such as air bags wi\
ll no longer operate.
The steering is locked when the key is removed.

To apply
Pull upwards, check that the vehicle is properly immobilised.
Depending on the gradient and/or vehicle load, it may be necessary to apply the brake by at least a further two notches and engage a gear (1st or reverse gear).
Never switch off the igni- tion when travelling down- hill, and avoid doing so in normal driving (assistance is not provided).
When driving, ensure that the handbrake has been completely released (red warning light off), risk of overheathing.
Power-assisted steering
If you have power-assisted steer- ing fitted, do not leave the steering wheel at full lock while stationary as this may damage the pump.

Fitting new tyres
TYRES (continued)
Tyre pressures
Tyre pressures must be respected. Tyre pressures for all wheels (including the spare wheel) must be checked at least once a month and always before a long journey (refer to the information on “Tyre pressures” at the beginning of this document).
Incorrect tyre pressures lead to abnormal tyre wear and unusually hot running. These are factors which may seriously affect safety and lead to:
– poor road holding,
– risk of blowouts or throwing a
tread.
Tyre pressures depend on the load and the driving speed. Adjust the pressures according to the condi- tions of use. (Refer to the informa- tion on “Tyre pressures” at the be- ginning of this document).
Pressures should be checked when the tyres are cold; ignore higher pressures which may be reached in hot weather or following a fast journey.
If tyre pressures cannot be checked when the tyres are cold, assume an in- crease of 0.2 to 0.3 bar.
Never deflate a hot tyre.
Note: a label (depending on country or model) fixed to the edge or frame of the driver’s door gives the recommended tyre pressures.
For safety reasons, this op- eration must be carried out by a specialist.
Fitting different tyres may change your vehicle as follows:
– It may mean that your vehicle no
longer conforms to current regu- lations.
– It may change the way it handles
when cornering.
– Heavy steering.
– It may affect the use of snow
chains.
Please be aware that a poorly tightened or miss- ing valve cap can make the tyres less airtight and lead to pressure loss.
Always use valve caps identical to those fitted originally and tighten them fully.

Rear towing point 4
Remorquage : dépannage
TOWING: breakdown
The steering wheel must be un- locked and the ignition key must be in position M (ignition on) to provide brake lights and direction indicators on the towed vehicle. At night the ve- hicle must have its lights on.
You must observe the towing regulations which apply in the country in which you are driving: do not exceed the towing
weight for your vehicle. Contact an ap- proved Dealer.
Only use the towing ring 1 (in the lug- gage compartment) and the towing points at the front 3 and rear 4 (never use the drive shafts). These towing points may only be used for towing: never use them for lifting the vehicle di- rectly or indirectly.
When the engine is stopped, steering and braking assist- ance are not operational.Do not leave the tools unse- cured inside the vehicle as they may come loose under braking.

2
– Use a rigid towing bar. If a rope or cable is used (where the law allows this), the ve- hicle being towed must be able to brake.
– A vehicle must not be towed if it is
not fit to be driven.
– Avoid accelerating or braking sud
- denly when towing, as this may result in damage being caused to the vehicle.
– When towing a vehicle, it is ad
- visable not to exceed 15 mph
(25 km/h).

OPERATING FAULTS
The following advice will enable you to carry out quick, temporary repairs. For safety reasons you should always contact an approved dealer as soon as possible.
The starter is activatedPOSSIBLE CAUSESWHAT TO DO
Warning lights dim or fail to come on; the starter does not run.Battery terminals disconnected, oxidised or incorrectly secured.Retighten them, reconnect them or clean them if they are oxidised.
Battery discharged or worn.Connect another battery to the faulty bat- tery. Refer to the information on “Battery: troubleshooting” in Section 5 or replace the battery if necessary.Do not push the vehicle if the steering column is locked.
The engine will not start.Starting conditions are not fulfilled.Refer to the information on “Starting/stop- ping the engine in Section 2.
The steering column remains locked.Steering wheel locked. To unlock, gently move the key and the steering wheel (refer to the information on the “Ignition switch” in Section 2).

OPERATING FAULTS (continued)
On the roadPOSSIBLE CAUSESWHAT TO DO
The power-assisted steering be- comes heavy.Belt brokenInsufficient oil in pump.Have the belt replaced.
Top up the power-assisted steering fluid (refer to the information on the “Power-as- sisted steering pump” in Section 4).
If the fault is still present, consult your approved dealer.
The engine overheats. The coolant temperature indicator light comes on.Engine cooling fan not working.Stop the vehicle, switch off the engine and contact an approved dealer.
Coolant leaks.Check the coolant reservoir: it should con- tain coolant. If there is none, consult your approved dealer as soon as possible.
WhistlingRoof aerial incorrectly positionedFold down the aerial until the end is approx- imately 44 cm from the roof of the vehicle.
Radiator: If there is a significant lack of coolant, remember that it must never be topped up using cold coolant while the engine is very warm. After any procedure on the vehicle which has involved even partial draining of the cooling system, it must be refilled with a new mixture prepared in the correct proportions. Reminder: only products approved by the Technical Department may be used for this purpose.
