knob pointer) is flush with base of A/C-heater control panel.
5) Rotate temperature control knob to its full clockwise
stop. Release knob. Knob pointer should be aimed at end of Red stripe.
If knob is pointed at end of Red stripe, go to next step. If knob is
not pointed at end of Red stripe, go back to step 2) and repeat
adjustment procedure.
6) Rotate temperature control knob to its full
counterclockwise stop. Release knob. If knob springs back, self-
adjuster clip securing temperature control cable to blend-air door
lever is improperly installed. See TEMPERATURE CONTROL CABLE R & I. If
knob does not spring back, temperature control cable adjustment is
complete.
TESTING
* PLEASE READ THIS FIRST *
WARNING: To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and
carefully follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING &
ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures in AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY
article.
A/C-HEATER CONTROL PANEL TEST
1) Connect a vacuum gauge in line with Black A/C-heater
vacuum supply hose, located at tee near power brake booster (Dakota)
or in engine compartment (Durango and Ram Pickup). Position gauge so
it can be viewed from passenger compartment.
2) Start engine. While observing gauge, rotate mode control
knob to each mode position (one position at a time). Pause after each
selection. Test gauge should drop, then return to 8 in. Hg shortly
after each selection is made. If gauge reading is as specified, go to
next step. If gauge reading is not as specified, check for vacuum leak
in vacuum lines or A/C-heater control panel.
3) Move temperature control knob quickly to full hot and full
cold positions. A distinct sound of blend-air door hitting its stops
should be heard. No spring-back of knob should exist.
4) If temperature control knob operates as specified,
temperature control system is okay. On Dakota and Durango, if
temperature control knob does not operate as specified, check
condition, routing, installation, and adjustment of temperature
control cable. See TEMPERATURE CONTROL CABLE ADJUSTMENT . Also check
blend air door for proper installation, obstructions, or faulty seals.
A/C SYSTEM PERFORMANCE
1) Park vehicle out of direct sunlight. Ensure ambient
temperature is at least 70F (21C). Connect tachometer and manifold
gauge set to vehicle. Turn A/C on. Turn mode control to panel and
recirculated air positions, temperature control lever to maximum
cooling, and blower to high.
2) Start engine and allow it to run at 1000 RPM, with A/C
compressor clutch engaged. Engine should be at operating temperature
with doors, windows, and hood closed. Insert thermometer into left
center air outlet.
3) Run engine and operate system for 5 minutes. The A/C
compressor clutch may cycle, depending on temperature. If A/C
compressor clutch cycles, stop engine and disconnect negative battery
cable. Remove clutch cycling pressure switch connector. Place a jumper
wire across terminals of clutch cycling pressure switch harness
connector.
4) Connect negative battery cable. Turn A/C on. Start and

Rear (Durango)
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove rear blower
motor switch located in headliner. See BLOWER MOTOR SWITCH (REAR)
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect rear blower motor switch
connector. Using an ohmmeter, check continuity between rear blower
motor switch connector Black wire and ground. If continuity exists, go
to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire
between rear blower motor switch connector and ground connector
located at left rear of vehicle body.
2) Place blower motor switch knob to any position except OFF.
Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between rear blower motor
switch connector Black wire and Black/Light Blue wire, and
Black/Orange wire and Dark Green wire while rotating blower motor
switch.
3) If continuity does not exist at any terminal, replace
faulty blower motor switch. If continuity exists as specified, check
for open in circuits between blower motor switch and blower motor
resistor. Also check for an open in circuit between blower motor
switch connector and blower motor relay.
CLUTCH CYCLING PRESSURE SWITCH
Dakota & Ram Pickup
1) Locate clutch cycling pressure switch on side or top of
A/C accumulator. Ensure clutch cycling pressure switch is properly
installed on A/C accumulator fitting. Ensure system pressure is
correct. See A/C SYSTEM PERFORMANCE test.
2) Start and run engine with A/C on. If clutch cycles, turn
engine off and disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect clutch
cycling pressure switch connector. Place a jumper wire across
terminals of clutch cycling pressure switch harness connector. Connect
negative battery cable. Connect manifold gauge set. Set A/C-heater

controls to A/C. Start and operate engine at idle speed.
3) Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between switch
terminals. Continuity should exist when suction pressure reading is
above 38 psi (2.7 kg/cm
) on Dakota; 43 psi (3.0 kg/cm) on Ram
Pickup. Continuity should not exist when suction pressure reading
drops below 20.5 psi (1.4 kg/cm
) on Dakota; 25 psi (1.8 kg/cm) on
Ram Pickup. If switch is okay, test and repair clutch control circuit
as needed. If switch is not okay, replace faulty clutch cycling
pressure switch.
ELECTRONIC CYCLING CLUTCH SWITCH
Durango
1) Locate electronic cycling clutch switch on thermal
expansion valve in engine compartment. Ensure system pressure is
correct. See A/C SYSTEM PERFORMANCE test. Ensure low pressure cut-out
switch and high pressure cut-out switch are working properly. See
LOW PRESSURE CUT-OUT SWITCH TEST and HIGH PRESSURE CUT-OUT SWITCH
test.
2) Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect electronic
cycling clutch switch and high pressure cut-out switch connectors.
Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity in Light Green/White wire
between electronic cycling clutch switch and high pressure cut-out
switch. If continuity exists in Light Green/White wire, go to next
step. If continuity does not exist in Light Green/White wire, repair
wire as necessary.
3) Disconnect low pressure cut-out switch connector. Using an
ohmmeter, check for continuity in Dark Blue/Yellow wire between
electronic cycling clutch switch and low pressure cut-out switch. If
continuity exists in Dark Blue/Yellow wire, go to next step. If
continuity does not exist in Dark Blue/Yellow wire, repair wire as
necessary.
4) Connect low pressure cut-out switch and high pressure cut-
out switch connectors. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition
on. Using voltmeter, check for battery voltage at electronic cycling
clutch switch connector terminal No. 2 (White wire). If battery
voltage exists, go to step 6).
5) If battery voltage does not exist, check fuse No. 7 (15-
amp) at junction block located at bottom left of instrument panel. If
fuse is okay, check for short or open in White wire between electronic
cycling clutch switch connector and fuse No. 7 (15-amp) at junction
block.
6) Connect electronic cycling clutch switch connector. Ensure
ambient temperature is between 68-90
F (20-30C). Start engine and
turn A/C on. If compressor clutch cycles 2-3 times per minute, replace
faulty electronic cycling clutch switch. If compressor clutch does not
cycle, check PCM for proper operation. See appropriate G - TESTS
W/CODES article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
HIGH PRESSURE CUT-OUT SWITCH
1) Locate high pressure cut-out switch on compressor
discharge line, near compressor. Ensure system pressure is correct.
See A/C SYSTEM PERFORMANCE test. Disconnect negative battery cable.
Disconnect high pressure cut-off switch connector.
2) Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between switch
terminals. If continuity exists, test and repair clutch control
circuit as needed. If continuity does not exist, replace faulty
switch.

from housing. To install, reverse removal procedure. Install new "O"
rings to A/C fittings. Evacuate and charge A/C system.
Removal & Installation (Durango - Rear Evaporator Core)
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Discharge A/C system,
using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Remove
headliner from passenger compartment of vehicle. Remove sun visors and
sun visor arm supports.
2) Remove coat hooks, overhead assist handle and dome light.
If equipped, remove overhead console. Remove air outlet bezel from
rear A/C-heater assembly. Remove rear blower motor switch. Remove
upper liftgate opening trim. Disengage "A", "B", "C", and "D" pillar
trim as necessary to prevent trim panel interference.
3) Move second and third row seats to cargo position. Move
front seats to full recline position. Remove headliner fasteners.
Carefully bow headliner and remove through lift gate opening.
4) Disconnect "B" pillar drain hoses from "Y" fittings.
Disconnect "B" pillar refrigerant lines and plug or cover all openings
in A/C system. Remove lower A/C-heater assembly cover. Remove screws
securing refrigerant tube and retaining strap to right side of upper
housing cover. Remove evaporator core. To install, reverse removal
procedure. Install new "O" rings to A/C fittings. Evacuate and charge
A/C system.
Removal & Installation (Ram Pickup - Front)
1) Remove and disassemble A/C-heater housing. See
A/C-HEATER ASSEMBLY . Separate halves of A/C-heater housing and remove
top half. Remove evaporator or heater core from housing.
2) To install, reverse removal procedure. Install new "O"
rings to A/C fittings. Evacuate and charge A/C system. Fill cooling
system. On 5.9L diesel engine, engine is equipped with a one-way check
valve. DO NOT run engine while filling cooling system. Fill engine
with engine turned off.
INSTRUMENT PANEL
Removal & Installation (Dakota & Durango)
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Disable air bag system.
See AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY article. Place front wheels in straight-
ahead position. Remove sill trim from both doorways. Remove kick panel
covers from both sides of vehicle. Remove mounting screws for hood
release handle.
2) Remove steering column trim panel and support bracket.
Remove tilt steering column lever (if equipped). Remove upper and
lower shrouds from steering column. Unplug driver's side air bag
module. Loosen multifunction switch wiring harness connector screw and
disconnect from switch. Screw will remain in connector.
3) Disconnect PRNDL cable. Disconnect shift cable from
steering column. Remove steering coupler lock pin. Remove toe plate
retaining screws. Remove steering column mounting bolts and remove
steering column from vehicle.
4) Remove screw from bulkhead wiring harness connector and
disconnect. Disconnect 2 body wiring harness connectors located next
to bulkhead connector. Disconnect 3 wiring harness connectors, from
junction block, located nearest to dash panel. Disconnect brake light
switch connector. Disconnect Rear Wheel Anti-Lock (RWAL) brake module
(if equipped), located near steering column support brackets.
5) Disconnect plastic retainer clip from parking brake
linkage rod, located at back of parking brake release handle. Remove
rod end from parking brake handle. Remove instrument panel center
support bracket. Unplug vacuum harness connector located at left end
of A/C-heater housing. Disconnect Air Bag Control Module (ACM)
connector.

VALVES. Connect 2 hoses with shutoff valves to manifold gauge set
center port. Connect one hose to vacuum pump and other hose to
refrigerant container. Weight of refrigerant container before and
after charging can be used to determine amount of refrigerant drawn
into system. Using vacuum pump, purge air from center hoses.
3) Fully open manifold gauge set low-side valve and
refrigerant container valve to allow refrigerant to enter A/C system.
When no more refrigerant is being drawn into A/C system, start engine
and allow to idle. Select MAX A/C, set blower motor speed to maximum
and allow remaining refrigerant to be drawn into A/C system.
NOTE: When ambient air temperature is high, it may be necessary to
use an external cooling fan to blow air through condenser and
radiator.
4) When proper amount of refrigerant has been added, close
refrigerant container valve. Allow any refrigerant remaining in hose
to be drawn into A/C system. When low-side pressure decreases to about
30 psi (2.1 kg/cm
), close center valve on manifold gauge set. Ensure
A/C system is operating properly. Disconnect manifold gauge set.
Install service port caps. Check system for leaks. See LEAK TESTING.
GENERAL MOTORS
Manufacturer recommends using A/C Refrigerant Recovery,
Recycling And Recharging (ACR4) System (J-39500). The ACR4 system ha\
s
one filtering cycle during recovery plus an automatic multiple pass
filtering during evacuation cycle. Follow manufacturer's instructions
provided with ACR4 equipment being used.
JEEP
Connect recovery/recycling equipment, meeting SAE standard
J1991 or J2210, to vehicle. Charge A/C system to specifications, using
equipment manufacturer's instructions.
LEAK TESTING
TYPES OF LEAK DETECTORS
Bubble Solution Detector
This is a solution applied externally at suspected leak
points. Leaking refrigerant will cause the detector to form bubbles
and foam. A soap and water solution also works well.
Dye Solution
This is a colored solution that may be introduced into the
A/C system. The dye will show up and color components at leak points.
Some manufacturers offer refrigerant containing a Red dye. This dye-
containing refrigerant is installed by normal charging procedures.
Other dye solutions are visible with a Black light only.
Electronic Leak Detector
This instrument will draw in any leaking refrigerant through
a test probe, and then sound an audible signal or create a flashing
light if refrigerant is found. It is the most sensitive of the leak
detectors used. Leak detectors are sensitive to windshield washing
solutions, many solvents and cleaners, and some adhesives. Ensure
surfaces near test areas are clean and dry to prevent false signal or
detector damage. Liquids ingested into detector will damage detector.
See Fig. 24 .

NOTE: All active codes must be resolved before diagnosing store
codes.
1) Raise and support vehicle. Start engine and let idle with
transmission in PARK position. Wiggle wiring harness and connectors of
air bag system and rotate steering wheel from stop to stop.
2) Visually inspect related wire harness connectors. Look for
broken, bent, pushed out, spread, corroded or contaminated terminals.
Also, look for chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires.
3) Check for trouble codes as you work through system. If
stored trouble code becomes active, perform appropriate diagnostic
test. If stored code is reproducible, repair or replace wiring
harness, harness connector or terminals or replace component as
necessary.
CLUSTER MESSAGE MISMATCH
NOTE: Perform AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST after
all repairs. Each time a connector is disconnected, inspect
it to ensure it is in good condition. Always focus on circuit
being tested. Dirt, water and corrosion, are most common
problems in connectors. Due to manufacturer changes in wire
colors, use terminal identification whenever possible.
1) If AIR BAG warning light is on, go to next step. If AIR
BAG warning light is not on, go to step 5).
2) Using DRB, select PASSIVE RESTRAINTS, AIRBAG and MONITOR
DISPLAY. Read WARNING LAMP STATUS. If DRB does not display MIC LAMP
STATUS ON, replace instrument cluster. If DRB displays MIC LAMP STATUS
ON, go to next step.
3) If DRB displays ACM LAMP REQUEST: ON, go to next step. If
DRB does not display ACM LAMP REQUEST: ON, replace instrument cluster.
4) If there are no potential causes for this DTC remaining,
ACM is assumed to be defective. Replace ACM. See
AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE (ACM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
NOTE: If AIR BAG warning light is defective, instrument cluster
will flash seat belt light for 30 seconds starting 10 seconds
after bulb check stops.
5) Using DRB, read air bag control module active codes
(messages). If CLUSTER MISMATCH is only active message, go to next
step. If other messages are present, go to appropriate diagnostic test
to continue diagnosis.
6) If seat belt warning light flashes for 30 seconds after
bulb check is complete, replace instrument cluster. If seat belt
warning light does not flashes for 30 seconds after bulb check is
complete, go to next step.
7) Using DRB, select PASSIVE RESTRAINTS, AIRBAG and MONITOR
DISPLAY. Read WARNING LAMP STATUS. If DRB displays ACM LAMP REQUEST:
OFF, go to next step. If DRB does not display ACM LAMP REQUEST: OFF,
replace instrument cluster.
8) If DRB displays MIC LAMP REQUEST: OFF, go to next step. If
DRB does not display MIC LAMP REQUEST: OFF, replace instrument
cluster.
9) If there are no potential causes for this DTC remaining,
ACM is assumed to be defective. Replace ACM. See
AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE (ACM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
DRIVER SQUIB CIRCUIT OPEN
NOTE: Perform AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST after
all repairs. Each time a connector is disconnected, inspect

it to ensure it is in good condition. Always focus on circuit
being tested. Dirt, water and corrosion, are most common
problems in connectors. Due to manufacturer changes in wire
colors, use terminal identification whenever possible.
1) Disconnect battery and wait 2 minutes before proceeding.
Disconnect driver-side air bag module squib connector. Connect a
jumper wire between driver-side air bag (squib) 2-pin connector
terminal No. 1 (Black/Light Blue wire) and terminal No. 2 (Dark
Green/Light Blue wire). Turn ignition on (engine off). Reconnect
battery. Using DRB, read active codes. If DRB displays DRIVER SQUIB
CIRCUIT SHORTED, replace driver-side air bag module. If not, go to
next step.
2) Disconnect clockspring 2-pin connector. Connect a jumper
wire between clockspring 2-pin connector terminals No. 1 (Black/Light
Blue wire) and No. 2 (Dark Green/Light Blue wire). Using DRB, read
active codes. If DRB displays DRIVER SQUIB CIRCUIT SHORTED, replace
clockspring. If not, go to next step.
3) Disconnect battery and wait 2 minutes before proceeding.
Remove jumper wires. Disconnect ACM connector. ACM is located under
instrument panel, on transmission tunnel. Using an ohmmeter, check
resistance between ACM connector terminal No. 6 (Dark Green/Light Blue
wire) and clockspring 2-pin connector terminal No. 2 (Dark Green/Light\
Blue wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If
resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open or high resistance in Dark
Green/Light Blue wire.
4) Check resistance between ACM connector terminal No. 5
(Black/Light Blue wire) and clockspring 2-pin connector terminal No. 1\
(Black/Light Blue wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next\
step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open or high
resistance in Black/Light Blue wire.
5) If there are no potential causes for this DTC remaining,
ACM is assumed to be defective. Replace ACM. See
AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE (ACM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
DRIVER SQUIB CIRCUIT SHORTED
NOTE: Perform AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST after
all repairs. Each time a connector is disconnected, inspect
it to ensure it is in good condition. Always focus on circuit
being tested. Dirt, water and corrosion, are most common
problems in connectors. Due to manufacturer changes in wire
colors, use terminal identification whenever possible.
1) Disconnect battery and wait 2 minutes before proceeding.
Ensure driver-side air bag module connector is completely connected
before disconnecting it. If driver-side air bag module connector is
not completely connected, reconnect it. If driver-side air bag
connector is completely connected, go to next step.
2) Disconnect driver-side air bag module. Turn ignition on
(engine off). Reconnect battery. Using DRB, read active codes. If DRB
displays DRIVER SQUIB CIRCUIT OPEN, replace driver-side air bag
module. If not, go to next step.
3) Disconnect clockspring 2-pin connector. Using DRB, read
active codes. If DRB displays DRIVER SQUIB CIRCUIT OPEN, replace
clockspring. If not, go to next step.
4) Turn ignition off, disconnect battery and wait 2 minutes
before proceeding. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module connector.
Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between clockspring 2-pin
connector terminal No. 1 (Black/Light Blue wire) and passenger-side
air bag 2-pin connector terminal "A" (Black/Yellow wire). If
resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short between Black/Light Blue
wire and Black/Yellow wire. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to

next step.
5) Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between clockspring 2-
pin connector terminals No. 1 (Black/Light Blue wire) and No. 2 (Dark\
Green/Light Blue wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair
short between Dark Green/Light Blue wire and Black/Light Blue wire. If
resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
6) If there are no potential causes for this DTC remaining,
ACM is assumed to be defective. Replace ACM. See
AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE (ACM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
DRIVER SQUIB CIRCUIT SHORTED TO BATTERY
NOTE: Perform AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST after
all repairs. Each time a connector is disconnected, inspect
it to ensure it is in good condition. Always focus on circuit
being tested. Dirt, water and corrosion, are most common
problems in connectors. Due to manufacturer changes in wire
colors, use terminal identification whenever possible.
1) Disconnect battery and wait 2 minutes before proceeding.
Disconnect driver-side air bag module. Turn ignition on and reconnect
battery. Using DRB, read active codes. If DRB does not display DRIVER
SQUIB CIRCUIT SHORTED TO VOLTAGE, replace driver-side air bag module.
If DRB displays DRIVER SQUIB CIRCUIT SHORTED TO VOLTAGE, go to next
step.
2) Disconnect clockspring 2-pin connector. Using DRB, read
active codes. If DRB does not display DRIVER SQUIB CIRCUIT SHORTED TO
VOLTAGE, replace clockspring. If DRB displays DRIVER SQUIB CIRCUIT
SHORTED TO VOLTAGE, go to next step.
3) Disconnect battery and wait 2 minutes before proceeding.
Disconnect ACM 23-pin connector. Using a voltmeter, check voltage
between ground and clockspring connector terminals No. 1 (Black/Light
Blue wire) and No. 2 (Dark Green/Light Blue wire). If voltage is more\
than 5 volts on either circuit, repair short to voltage in Dark
Green/Light Blue wire or Black/Light Blue wire. If voltage is less
than 5 volts on either circuit, go to next step.
4) If there are no potential causes for this DTC remaining,
ACM is assumed to be defective. Replace ACM. See
AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE (ACM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
DRIVER SQUIB CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
NOTE: Perform AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST after
all repairs. Each time a connector is disconnected, inspect
it to ensure it is in good condition. Always focus on circuit
being tested. Dirt, water and corrosion, are most common
problems in connectors. Due to manufacturer changes in wire
colors, use terminal identification whenever possible.
1) Disconnect battery and wait 2 minutes before proceeding.
Disconnect driver-side air bag module. Turn ignition on (engine off)
and reconnect battery. Using DRB, read active codes. If DRB does not
display DRIVER SQUIB CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND, replace driver-side
air bag module. If DRB displays DRIVER SQUIB CIRCUIT SHORTED TO
GROUND, go to next step.
2) Disconnect clockspring 2-pin connector. Using DRB, read
active codes. If DRB does not display DRIVER SQUIB CIRCUIT SHORTED TO
GROUND, replace clockspring. If DRB displays DRIVER SQUIB CIRCUIT
SHORTED TO GROUND, go to next step.
3) Disconnect battery and wait 2 minutes before proceeding.
Disconnect ACM 23-pin connector. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance
between ground and clockspring connector terminals No. 1 (Black/Light
Blue wire) and No. 2 (Dark Green/Light Blue wire). If resistance is

connector terminal No. 14 (Light Green/Yellow wire). If voltage is
less than 10 volts, repair open in Light Green/Yellow wire. If voltage
is more than 10 volts, replace ACM.
4) If there are no potential causes for this DTC remaining,
ACM is assumed to be defective. Replace ACM. See
AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE (ACM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
5) Turn ignition off. Turn PAD switch to the ON position (if
equipped). Using an ohmmeter, check resistance at fused ignition
switch output RUN/START circuit between fuse No. 19 and ground. If
resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace fuse. If resistance is less
than 5 ohms, disconnect battery and wait 2 minutes before proceeding.
Disconnect ACM connector. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between
ground and ACM connector terminal No. 14 (Light Green/Yellow wire). If\
resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more
than 5 ohms, replace ACM and fuse No. 19.
6) Disconnect PAD switch. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance
between ground and ACM connector terminal No. 14 (Light Green/Yellow
wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in
Light Green/Yellow wire and replace fuse No. 19. If resistance is more
than 5 ohms, replace fuse No. 19 located in junction block and go to
next step.
7) If there are no potential causes for this DTC remaining,
ACM is assumed to be defective. Replace ACM. See
AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE (ACM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
MISSING OR INVALID VIN MESSAGE
NOTE: Perform AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST after
all repairs. Each time a connector is disconnected, inspect
it to ensure it is in good condition. Always focus on circuit
being tested. Dirt, water and corrosion, are most common
problems in connectors. Due to manufacturer changes in wire
colors, use terminal identification whenever possible.
1) Using DRB, select ENGINE PCM. If DRB displays NO RESPONSE
from PCM, go to NO RESPONSE FROM POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under
VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS. If DRB does not display NO RESPONSE from PCM
and vehicle is a Club Cab (BE) model, go to next step. If vehicle is
not a Club Cab (BE model), go step 3).
2) Using DRB, select PASSIVE RESTRAINTS, AIRBAG AND MONITORS.
Select VIN type (7th digit of VIN; VIN 2 or 3 on Club Cab). If DRB
does not display PCM VIN: BE, replace Powertrain Control Module (PCM).\
If DRB displays PCM VIN: BE, replace ACM.
3) Using DRB, select PASSIVE RESTRAINTS, AIRBAG AND MONITORS.
Select VIN type (7th digit of VIN; VIN 6 on Standard Cab). If DRB does\
not display PCM VIN: BR, replace Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If
DRB displays PCM VIN: BR, replace ACM.
NO CCD COMMUNICATION

6) Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between ACM connector
terminal No. 8 (Violet/Yellow wire) and PAD switch 4-pin connector
(harness side) terminal No. 3 (Black/Yellow wire). If resistance is
more than 5 ohms, repair open or high resistance in Violet/Yellow
wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
7) If there are no potential causes for this DTC remaining,
ACM is assumed to be defective. Replace ACM. See
AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE (ACM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
PASSENGER SQUIB CIRCUIT SHORTED
NOTE: Perform AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST after
all repairs. Each time a connector is disconnected, inspect
it to ensure it is in good condition. Always focus on circuit
being tested. Dirt, water and corrosion, are most common
problems in connectors. Due to manufacturer changes in wire
colors, use terminal identification whenever possible.
1) Turn ignition off. Turn PAD switch to the ON position.
Turn ignition on (engine off). Using DRB, read active codes. If DRB
displays PASSENGER SIDE SQUIB SHORTED DTC, go to next step. If DRB
does not display PASSENGER SIDE SQUIB SHORTED DTC, go to appropriate
diagnostic test.
2) Turn ignition off. Disconnect battery and wait 2 minutes
before proceeding. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module connector.
Disconnect clockspring connector. Go to next step.
3) Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between Passenger-side
air bag 2-pin connector terminal "B" (Dark Green/Yellow wire) and
clockspring 2-pin connector terminal No. 1 (Black/Light Blue wire). If\
resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short between Dark Green/Yellow
wire and Black/Light Blue wire. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go
to next step.
4) Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between passenger-side
air bag module 2-pin connector terminal "A" (Black/Yellow wire) and
clockspring 2-pin connector terminal No. 2 (Dark Green/Light Blue
wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short between
Black/Yellow wire and Dark Green/Light Blue wire. If resistance is
more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
5) Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between passenger-side
air bag clockspring 2-pin connector terminals. If resistance is less
than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms,
replace passenger-side air bag module.
6) Disconnect PAD switch 4-pin connector. Using an ohmmeter,
check resistance between passenger-side air bag module 4-pin connector
(harness side) terminals "A" (Black/Yellow wire) and "B" (Dark
Green/Yellow wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short
between Dark Green/Yellow wire Black/Yellow wire. If resistance is
more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
7) Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between PAD switch 4-
pin connector (harness side) terminals No. 1 (Brown/Yellow wire) and\
No. 2 (Violet/Yellow wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms in
either circuit, repair short between Brown/Yellow wire and
Violet/Yellow wire. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next
step.
8) If there are no potential causes for this DTC remaining,
