SIDE WINDOW BAGS - HEAD
PROTECTION fig. 20
(where provided)
They consist of two “curtain” cushions,
one on the right and the other on the left
side of the vehicle, located behind the side
coverings of the roof and covered by
proper finishing.
Window bags have been designed for pro-
tecting the head of front and rear occu-
pants in the event of side crash, thanks to
the wide cushion inflation surface.
IMPORTANT In the event of side crash,
you can obtain the best protection by the
system keeping a correct position on the
seat, allowing thus a correct window bag
unfolding.IMPORTANT The front air bags and/or
side bags may be deployed if the vehicle
is subject to heavy knocks or accidents in-
volving the underbody area, such as for
example violent shocks, against steps,
kerbs or low obstacles, falling of the ve-
hicle in big holes or sags in the road.
IMPORTANT When the airbag inflates it
emits a small amount of dusts. These dusts
are harmless and is not the beginning of
a fire; then the unfold cushion surface and
the vehicle interiors can be covered by a
dusty remains: this dust can irritate skin
and eyes. In case of contact, wash yourself
using neutral soap and water.
Expiry dates for pyrotechnic charge and
coil contact are specified on the label in-
side the glovebox. As this date approach-
es, contact Fiat Dealership to have it re-
placed.
fig. 20F0P0117m
IMPORTANT Should an accident occur in
which any of the safety devices is activat-
ed, take the vehicle to a Fiat Dealership to
have the devices activated replaced and to
have the system checked.
Every control, repair and replacement op-
erations concerning the air bags must on-
ly be carried out c/o Fiat Dealership.
If you are having the vehicle scrapped,
have the air bag system deactivated at a
Fiat Dealership first. If the vehicle changes
ownership, the new owner must be in-
formed of the method of use of air bags
and the above warnings and also be given
this “Owner Handbook”.

CORRECT USE
OF THE VEHICLE
Roof rack/ski rack
Remove the roof rack or the ski rack from
the roof as soon as they are no longer
used. These accessories lower air pene-
tration and adversely affect consumption
levels. When needing to carry particular-
ly voluminous objects, preferably use a
trailer.
Electric devices
Use electric devices only for the amount
of time needed. Rear heated window, ad-
ditional headlights, windscreen wipers and
heater fan need a considerable amount of
energy, therefore increasing the require-
ment of current increases fuel consump-
tion (up to +25% in the urban cycle).
Climate control
The air conditioner is an additional load
which greatly affects the engine leading to
higher consumption (on average up to
+20%). When the temperature outside
the vehicle permits it, use the air vents
where possible.
Spoilers
The use of non-certified aerodynamic
items may adversely affect air drag and
consumption levels.DRIVING STYLE
Starting
Do not warm the engine when the vehi-
cle is stationary or at high or low speed:
in this way the engine will warm up grad-
ually increasing consumption and emis-
sions. You should drive off slowly straight
away avoiding high revs so that the engine
will warm up more quickly.
Unnecessary actions
Avoid accelerating when waiting at traffic
lights or before switching off the engine.
This and also double declutching is ab-
solutely pointless on modern vehicles and
also increase consumption and pollution.
Gear selections
As soon as the conditions of the traffic and
road allow, use a higher gear. Using a low
gear to obtain brilliant performance in-
creases consumption.
In the same way improper use of a high
gear increases consumption, emissions an
engine wear.CONTAINING
RUNNING COSTS
Some suggestions which may help you to
keep the running costs of the vehicle
down and lower the amount of toxic emis-
sions released into the atmosphere are
given below.
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
Vehicle maintenance
Carry out the checks and adjustments/reg-
ulations specified in the “Service Sched-
ule”.
Tyres
Check tyre inflation pressure regularly.
Tyres should be checked at least once
every four weeks: if the pressure is too
low, fuel consumption increases as the re-
sistance to the rolling movement of the
tyre is greater.
Unnecessary loads
Do not travel with too much load.
The weight of the vehicle (specially in ur-
ban traffic) and its trim greatly effects con-
sumption and stability.

ly seek immediate advice from the Fiat
Dealership.
If the warning light flashes: it signals that
the vehicle is in the “economy mode”
and has deactivated some unnecessary
functions.

❒dusty roads;
❒short distances (less than 7-8 km) re-
peated and with external tempera-
tures below zero;
❒frequently idling engines or long dis-
tance low speed driving (e.g. door-to-
door deliveries) or in case of a long
term inactivity;
❒driving in the city;
carry out the following checks more fre-
quently than required in the Service
Schedule:
❒check front disk brake pad conditions
and wear;
❒check cleanness of locks, bonnet and
boot and lever cleanness and lubrica-
tion;
❒sight inspect the conditions of: engine,

Never smoke while working
in the engine compartment;
gas and inflammable vapours may be
present, with the risk of fire.
WARNING
When topping up take care
not to confuse the various
types of fluids: they are all in-
compatible with one anoth-
er and could seriously damage the ve-
hicle.

Engine oil top up funnel
(120 Multijet and 140 Multijet
versions) fig. 5
In order to make engine oil topping up
easier, 120 Multijet and 140 Multijet ver-
sions have been equipped with funnel
A-fig. 5, provided for the purpose and in-
stalled in the relevant engine compart-
ments.ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION
Max engine oil consumption is usually 400
grams every 1,000 km.
During the beginning of the vehicle’s life
the engine is tuning in. Engine oil con-
sumption can only be considered stabilised
after the first 5,000 - 6,000 km.
IMPORTANT The oil consumption de-
pends on driving style and the conditions
under which the vehicle is used.
IMPORTANT After adding or changing
the oil, let the engine turn over for a few
seconds and wait a few minutes after turn-
ing it off before you check the level. ENGINE OIL fig. 3-4
Check the oil level a few minutes (about
5) after the engine has stopped, with the
vehicle parked on level ground.
The oil level shall be included between the
MINand MAXmarks on the dipstick B.
The gap between the MINand MAX
marks corresponds to about one litre of
oil.
If the oil level is near or even below the
MINmark, add oil through the filler neck
Auntil reaching the MAXmark.
Oil level shall never exceed the MAX
mark.
fig. 3 - 90 Multijet versionsF0P0149mF0P0268m
When the engine is hot, take
care when working inside the
engine compartment to avoid burns.
Remember that when the engine is
hot, fan may cut in: danger of injury.
Scarves, ties and other loose cloth-
ing might be pulled by moving parts.

ENGINE COOLANT fig. 6
The coolant level shall be checked with
cold engine and shall be within the MIN
and MAXmarks on the tank.
If the level is low, pour slowly a mixture
of 50% distilled water and 50%
PARAFLU UP of the FL Selenia Group
through the filler neck Auntil the level
reaches the MAXmark.
A 50-50 mixture of PARAFLU UPand
distilled water gives freeze protection to
–35°C.
fig. 6F0P0152m
The engine cooling system us-
es protective antifreeze fluid
PARAFLU UP. Use the same
fluid type as that already in
the cooling system when topping up.
PARAFLU UP fluid cannot be mixed
with any other type of fluid. Should it
happen, under no circumstances start
the engine; contact a Fiat Dealership.
The cooling system is pres-
surised. If necessary, replace
the cap only with another genuine
one, otherwise system efficiency
could be compromised. Do not re-
move the reservoir cap when the en-
gine is hot: you risk scalding yourself.
WARNING
Used engine oil and filter con-
tain harmful substances for
the environment. Contact Fi-
at Dealership to have the oil
and filter changed, as they are
equipped to dispose of the waste oil
and filters respecting the nature and
the law.
Do not add oil with specifica-
tions other than that already
in the engine.

Make sure that the highly
corrosive brake fluid does not
drip onto the paintwork; if it
does, wash it off immediate-
ly with water.
Brake fluid is poisonous and
highly corrosive. In the event
of accidental contact, wash the parts
involved immediately with neutral
soap and water, then rinse thor-
oughly. Call the doctor immediately
if the fluid is swallowed.
WARNING
The symbol πon the con-
tainer indicates synthetic
brake fluid, distinguishing it from the
mineral kind. Using mineral fluids ir-
reversibly damages the special brak-
ing system rubber seals.
WARNING
POWER STEERING FLUID
With the vehicle on level ground, engine not
running and cold, check whether the oil lev-
el in the tank is between the MINand
MAXmarks on the tank fig 9 andfig. 10.
If oil is hot the level can also exceed the
MAXmark.
If required, top up with oil having the same
characteristics of the oil present in the sys-
tem.
fig. 9 - 90 Multijet versionsF0P0150mfig. 10 - 120 Multijet
and 140 Multijet versionsF0P0151m
Power steering oil consump-
tion is extremely low. If the
fluid level needs topping up
again after a short period of
time, have the system checked for leak-
age at a Fiat Dealership.
Do not allow the power
steering fluid to touch the
hot parts of the engine: it is inflam-
mable.
WARNING
For the van outfitting it is
recommended to replace the
brakes liquid every two years.
