transmission fluid FIAT TIPO 4DOORS 2019 Owner handbook (in English)

WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES
IMPORTANT The warning light switches on in the instrument panel together with a dedicated message and/or acoustic signal
when applicable. These indications are indicative and precautionary and as such must not be considered as exhaustive and/or
alternative to the information contained in the Owner Handbook, which you are advised to read carefully in all cases. Always
refer to the information in this section in the event of a failure indication.
IMPORTANT Failure indications displayed are divided into two categories: very serious and less serious failures. Serious faults
are indicated by a repeated and prolonged warning "cycle". Less serious faults are indicated by a warning "cycle" with a shorter
duration. The display cycle of both categories can be interrupted. The instrument panel warning light will stay on until the cause
of the failure is eliminated.
NOTE The warning lights and icons described below are indicative and can change based on the version or market.
Red warning lights
Warning light What it means
redINSUFFICIENT BRAKE FLUID / PARKING BRAKE ON
Low brake fluid level
The warning light turns on when the level of the brake fluid in the reservoir falls below the minimum level,
possibly due to a leak in the circuit. Restore the brake fluid level, then check that the warning light has
switched off. If the warning light stays on, contact a Fiat Dealership.
Parking brake on
The warning light switches on when the parking brake is engaged.
redPOWER STEERING FAILURE
This warning light (or symbol in the display) switches on when the ignition device is brought to MAR, but it
should switch off after a few seconds. If the warning light (or symbol on the display) remains on, you could
not have steering assistance and the effort required to operate the steering wheel could be increased;
steering is, however, possible. Contact a Fiat Dealership as soon as possible.
redFAULT IN AT6 AUTOMATIC GEARBOX
(for versions/markets, where provided)
The warning light or symbol switches on to indicate that there is a failure in the automatic transmission.
Contact a Fiat Dealership as soon as possible.18)

ENGINE STARTING
FAILURE
105)
Important notes
Do not try to start the engine by towing
or pushing the vehicle. This manoeuvre
could let unburnt fuel enter the catalytic
converter. When the engine is started, this would
ignite, causing catalytic converter
overheating and damage.
If the battery is flat, you can jump start
the vehicle by connecting the battery
with an auxiliary one or with one on
another vehicle using suitable cables.
This manoeuvre can anyway be
dangerous when not performed
correctly. See the indications in the
"Emergency starting" paragraph in the
"In an emergency" chapter.
WARNING
105)Do not try to start the engine pouring
fuel or other flammable fluid inside the
throttle body air intake: this might damage
the engine and injury people nearby.
106)It is dangerous to run the engine in
enclosed areas. The engine takes in
oxygen and releases carbon dioxide,
carbon monoxide and other toxic gases.
107)The brake servo is not active until the
engine is started, so you would need to
apply much more force than usual to the
brake pedal.
108)Do not start the engine by pushing,
towing or driving downhill. These
manoeuvres may damage the catalytic
converter.
104
STARTING AND DRIVING

REGULAR CHECKS
Every1,000km or before long trips
check and, if necessary, top up:
engine coolant level;
brake fluid level;
windscreen washer fluid level;
tyre inflation pressure and condition;
operation of lighting system
(headlights, direction indicators, hazard
warning lights, etc.);
operation of windscreen wash/wipe
system and positioning/wear of wiper
blades;

SERVICING AND CARE

ENGINE OIL
155)
60)
Check the oil level a few minutes (about
5) after the engine has stopped, with
the vehicle parked on level ground.
Check that the oil level is between the
MIN and MAX references on the
dipstick.
If the level of the oil is close to or below
the MIN mark, add oil via the filler fitting
until the MAX mark is reached.
Take out the engine oil dipstick, clean it
with a lint-free cloth and reinsert it.
Extract it again and check that the level
is between the MIN and MAX marks on
the dipstick.Engine oil consumption
61)
2)
The maximum engine oil consumption
is usually 400 grams every 1000 km.
When the car is new, the engine needs
to be run in; therefore the engine oil
consumption can only be considered
stabilised after the first 5000 - 6000 km.
IMPORTANT After adding or changing
the oil, let the engine turn over for a few
seconds and wait a few minutes after
turning it off before you check the level.
ENGINE COOLANT FLUID
62)
156)
If the level is too low, unscrew the cap
of reservoir 4 and add the fluid
described in the "Technical
Specifications" chapter.
WINDSCREEN WASHER
FLUID
157) 158)
If the level is too low, raise the reservoir
cap 3 and add the fluid described in the
"Technical Specifications" chapter.
BRAKE FLUID
63)
159) 160)
Check that the fluid is at the max. level.
If the fluid level in the reservoir is too
low, undo the reservoir cap 1 and add
the fluid described in the "Technical
Specifications" chapter.
IMPORTANT Carefully clean the cap of
the reservoir and the surrounding
surface. Take great care to ensure that
impurities do not enter the reservoir
when the cap is opened.
For topping-up, always use a funnel
with integrated filter with mesh equal to
or lower than 0.12 mm.
IMPORTANT Brake fluid is hygroscopic
(i.e. it absorbs moisture). For this
reason, if the vehicle is mainly used in
areas with a high degree of
atmospheric humidity, the fluid should
be replaced at more frequent intervals
than specified in the "Scheduled
Servicing Plan".
AUTOMATIC
TRANSMISSION
ACTIVATION SYSTEM OIL
(where provided)
3)
The transmission control oil level should
only be checked at a Fiat Dealership.

SERVICING AND CARE

157)Do not travel if the windscreen
washer reservoir is empty: using the
windscreen washer is essential for
improving visibility. Repeated operation of
the system without fluid could damage or
cause rapid deterioration of some system
components.
158)Some commercial additives for
windscreen washer fluid are flammable.
The engine compartment contains hot
components which may start a fire.
159)Brake fluid is poisonous and highly
corrosive. In the event of accidental
contact, immediately wash the affected
parts with water and mild soap. Then rinse
thoroughly. Call a doctor immediately if
swallowed.
160)The symbol
, on the brake fluid
container indicates if a brake fluid is
synthetic or mineral-based. Use of mineral
type fluids will damage the special rubber
seals of the braking system beyond repair.
161)Battery fluid is poisonous and
corrosive. Avoid contact with the skin and
eyes. Keep open flames away from the
battery and do not use objects that might
create sparks: risk of explosion and fire.
162)Using the battery with insufficient fluid
irreparably damages the battery and may
cause an explosion.
163)When performing any operation on
the battery or near it, always protect your
eyes with special goggles.
IMPORTANT
59)Be careful not to confuse the various
types of fluids while topping up: they are
not compatible with each other! Topping up
with an unsuitable fluid could severely
damage your vehicle.
60)The oil level must never exceed the
MAX. mark.
61)Always top up using engine oil of the
same specifications as that already in the
engine.
62)PARAFLU
UPanti-freeze is used in the
engine cooling system. Use fluid of the
same type as that contained in the cooling
system for any top-ups. PARAFLU
UP
cannot be mixed with any other type of
fluid. If this happens, do not start the
engine under any circumstances and
contact a Fiat Dealership.
63)Prevent brake fluid, which is highly
corrosive, from coming into contact with
painted parts. Should it happen,
immediately wash with water.
64)If the vehicle must remain unused for a
long time at a very low temperature,
remove the battery and take it to a warm
place, to avoid freezing.
65)Incorrect installation of electric and
electronic devices may cause severe
damage to your car. After purchasing your
vehicle, if you wish to install any
accessories (e.g. anti-theft, radio phone,
etc.), go to a Fiat Dealership, which will
suggest the most suitable devices and
advise you whether a higher capacity
battery needs to be installed.
IMPORTANT
2)The used engine oil and the filter that has
been replaced contain substances that are
harmful to the environment. To change the
oil and filters, we advise you to contact a
Fiat Dealership.
3)Used transmission fluid contains
substances that are harmful to the
environment. It is advisable to contact a
Fiat Dealership to have the fluid changed.
4)Batteries contain substances which are
very dangerous for the environment. For
battery replacement, contact a Fiat
Dealership.
176
SERVICING AND CARE

IMPORTANT Do not operate the
windscreen wiper with the blades lifted
from the windscreen.
Windscreen washer
The window washer nozzles are fixed
fig. 174. If there is no jet of fluid, firstly
check that there is fluid in the reservoir
(see paragraph “Engine compartment”
in this chapter). Only use the prescribed
fluid; do not use only water.
Then check that the nozzle holes are
not clogged; use a needle to unblock
them if necessary.
EXHAUST SYSTEM
165) 166)
72)
Adequate maintenance of the engine
exhaust system represents the best
protection against leaks of carbonmonoxide into the passenger
compartment.
AUTOMATIC
TRANSMISSION
(where provided)
73)
Use only a gearbox oil with the same
characteristics as those indicated in the
"Fluids and lubricants" table (see
"Technical specifications" chapter).
Special additives
Do not use any type of additive with the
automatic transmission oil. The
automatic transmission oil is a product
designed specially for this vehicle and
its performance may be compromised
through the use of further additives.
Avoid the use of transmission sealers,
since they may compromise the
efficiency of the automatic transmission
seals.
IMPORTANT Do not use chemicals to
flush the transmission, since this may
damage its components.
Frequency of oil changes
In normal vehicle operating conditions,
it is not necessary to change the
transmission oil.If oil leaks are noticed or irregular
operation of the transmission is
detected, have it checked immediately
at a Fiat Dealership.
IMPORTANT Driving the vehicle with an
insufficient oil level may cause serious
damage to the transmission.
WARNING
164)The air intake system (air cleaner,
rubber hoses, etc.) can be a protection in
the case of blowbacks from the engine. DO
NOT REMOVE this system unless you
need to carry out repair or servicing
operations. Before starting the engine,
ensure that the system has not been
removed: failure to observe this precaution
may result in serious injury.
165)Exhaust emissions are very
dangerous, and may be lethal. They
contain carbon monoxide, a colourless,
odourless gas which can cause fainting
and poisoning if inhaled.
166)The exhaust system may reach high
temperatures and may cause a fire if the
vehicle is parked on flammable material.
Dry grass or leaves can also catch fire if
they come into contact with the exhaust
system. Do not park or use the vehicle in a
place in which the exhaust system might
come into contact with flammable material.
