Unlocking the vehicle

Tailgate unlockC
Press the unlock button once tounlock the vehicle. SeeProgramming the remotecontrol (page 35).
Press and hold the unlock button forthree seconds to unlock the vehicleand open the windows and sunroof(global opening)*.
Press the lock button once toactivate central locking and arm thealarm.
Press the lock button twice withinthree seconds to activate doublelocking and arm the interior sensors.
Press and hold the lock button forthree seconds to lock the vehicle andclose the windows and sunroof(global closing)*.
Press the tailgate unlock button twicewithin three seconds to unlock theluggage compartment.
* only in combination with four electricwindows (in combination with twoelectric windows, only the sunroofcan be opened and closed in thisway).
Opening the tailgate
To open the luggage compartment,press the switch. The driver’s doormust be unlocked.

•Switch the ignition back on(position II) or wait for tenseconds without programminganother remote control to end thekey programming. Only theremote controls which you havejust programmed are now able tolock and unlock the vehicle.
Reprogramming theunlocking function
You can change the unlockingfunction so that pressing the unlockbutton once deactivates the centrallocking or double locking, disarmsthe anti-theft alarm system andunlocks only the driver’s door.Pressing the unlock button twicewithin three seconds also unlocks thepassengers’ doors.
In order to re-programme thefunction, press and hold the unlockand lock buttons simultaneously forat least four seconds with the ignitionswitched off. The direction indicatorswill flash twice to indicate that theunlocking function has beensuccessfully re-programmed.
Pressing and holding both buttonssimultaneously for at least fourseconds again will change thefunction back.
CHANGING THE REMOTE
CONTROL BATTERY
If the range of the transmitter in theremote control decreases gradually,the battery (type 3V CR 2032) shouldbe replaced.
Remote control type 1
First, press the button to release thekey blade.
Passive key
Remove the spare key.

Opening the tailgate
Note:If there is a cut in the powersupply e.g. the battery isdisconnected, it is not possible toopen the tailgate. To open thetailgate, the vehicle must first beunlocked with the key or remotecontrol.
To open the luggage compartment,press the switch. The driver’s doormust be unlocked.
Closing the tailgate
A recessed grip is incorporated insidethe tailgate to facilitate closing.

WARNING
Double locking should not beactivated when persons areinside the vehicle.
Note:Only vehicles without remotecontrol are equipped with a lockcylinder in the passenger’s door.
The central locking system can beactivated from the driver’s door. Itoperates only when the front doorsare closed. It is activated from theoutside with the key or remotecontrol, or from inside by depressingthe locking button on the driver’sdoor handle.
On vehicles without remote control,it can also be activated from outsidewith the key at the passenger’s dooror using the locking button on thatdoor.
Double locking is an additional theftprotection feature which preventsthe vehicle’s doors being openedfrom inside the vehicle. Doublelocking is possible only if the frontdoors are closed.

WARNING
If a failure occurs in the vehicle’selectrical system the driver’sdoor can still be individually unlockedwith the key.
With the remote control: Pressthe unlock button once.
One long flash of the directionindicators confirms that all the doors,the tailgate and the fuel filler flap havebeen unlocked and that the anti-theftalarm system has been disarmed.
Automatic relocking
To prevent the vehicle being leftunlocked inadvertently, centrallocking and the anti-theft alarmsystem will be reactivatedautomatically 45 seconds after theunlock button is pressed if thefollowing occurs during this period:
•No door is opened.
•The luggage compartment is notopened.
•The ignition is not switched on.
Unlocking the tailgate
To unlock only the tailgate when thevehicle is locked, press the unlockbutton twice within three seconds.
Locking the vehicle
To activate central locking and armthe anti-theft alarm system:
With the key: Turn the key in thedriver’s or front passenger’s door toposition 2.

WARNING
The vehicle does not lock itselfautomatically. If no lockingbutton is pressed, the vehicle willremain unlocked.
Note:Before leaving the vehicle,ensure that the ignition switch ispulled out. See Ignition switch(page 141).
Note:A valid passive key must belocated within the detection range ofthe respective door. If locking fromthe tailgate, the passive key must bewithin the tailgate detection range.
Note:Once activated, the vehiclewill remain locked for approximatelythree seconds, even if the passivekey is within the detection rangeduring this delay period. This is toallow you to pull a door handle andcheck if the vehicle is locked. Whenthe delay period is over, the doorscan be opened again, provided thepassive key is within the respectivedetection range. The delay periodcan be set to zero by an expert.
Note:If a passive key is left insidethe vehicle PASSIVE KEY LEFTINSIDE appears in the informationdisplay. Remove the passive keyfrom the vehicle interior. All passivekeys left inside the vehicle when it islocked will be disabled.
To activate central locking and armthe alarm:
•Press the locking button on oneof the front doors or the tailgateonce.
•On vehicles without doublelocking, the direction indicatorswill flash twice as confirmation.
To activate double locking, to armthe alarm and the interior sensors:
•Press the locking button on oneof the front doors or the tailgatetwice within three seconds.
•The direction indicators will flashtwice as confirmation.
Deactivating the key freefunction
The key free function can bedeactivated using the informationdisplay. See Information displays(page 96).
Once it is deactivated:
•the vehicle can only be lockedand unlocked using the spare keyin the lock cylinder on the driver’sdoor or using the buttons on thepassive key.
•the engine can only be startedwith the spare key.

The system is armed as soon as thevehicle is locked and acts as adeterrent to unauthorised personswho attempt to open the doors,bonnet or luggage compartment, orremove the audio system.
The alarm sounds for 30 seconds ifan unauthorised person opens adoor, the luggage compartment orthe bonnet. The hazard flasher lightswill flash for five minutes.
Any attempt to start the enginewithout a valid key or to remove theaudio system sounds the alarmagain.
Automatic arming delay
The 20 seconds arming delay beginswhen the bonnet, luggagecompartment and all doors areclosed.
Interior sensors
WARNING
This system functions correctlyonly if all windows and thesunroof are completely closed. Inaddition to this, the sensors locatedin the interior lamp unit must not becovered up. The system should notbe activated if any persons, animalsor other moving objects are insidethe vehicle.
Note:The interior sensors will notoperate if the convertible top is open.
This system acts as a deterrentagainst unauthorised intrusion bysensing any movement within thevehicle.
Unauthorised entry into the vehicle’sinterior will trigger the alarm in thesame way as the anti-theft system.
The sensors are located in the interiorlamp unit.
Convertible only
The interior sensors are automaticallydisabled if the convertible top is open.
All except Britain and Ireland
The interior sensing alarm is armedtogether with the double lockingsystem.
Britain and Ireland only
The interior sensing alarm is armedtogether with the central lockingsystem.
To deactivate the interior sensors:

Note:Central locking also locks andunlocks the fuel filler flap. See Locks(page 40).
Open the flap fully until it engages.Turn the fuel filler cap anti-clockwise.
When the filler cap is removed, ahissing noise may be heard. This isnormal and should be disregarded.
To close, turn the cap clockwise untilit clicks.
REFUELLING
CAUTION
Do not attempt to start theengine if you have filled the fueltank with the incorrect fuel. This coulddamage the engine. Have the systemchecked by a properly trainedtechnician immediately.
FUEL CONSUMPTION
The CO2 and fuel consumptionfigures are derived from laboratorytests according to EEC Directive80/1268/EEC and subsequentamendments and are carried out byall vehicle manufacturers.
They are intended as a comparisonbetween makes and models ofvehicles. They are not intended torepresent the real world fuelconsumption you may get from yourvehicle. Real world fuel consumptionis governed by many factorsincluding; driving style, high speeddriving, stop/start driving, airconditioning usage, the accessoriesfitted and towing etc.
Your Ford dealer can give you adviceon improving your fuel consumption.
