Checking Automatic TransmissionFluid
For scheduled intervals of the fluid checksand changes, See ScheduledMaintenance (page 270). Yourtransmission does not consume fluid.However, the fluid level should be checkedif the transmission is not working properly,i.e., if the transmission slips or shifts slowlyor if you notice some sign of fluid leakage.
Automatic transmission fluid expandswhen warmed. To obtain an accurate fluidcheck, drive the vehicle until it is at normaloperating temperature (approximately19 mi (30 km)). Verify that thetransmission fluid temperature gauge,located on the instrument cluster, is withinnormal range.
1. Drive the vehicle 19 mi (30 km) until itreaches normal operating temperature.
2.Park the vehicle on a level surface andengage the parking brake.
3.With the engine running, parking brakeengaged and your foot on the brakepedal, move the gearshift lever throughall of the gear ranges. Allow sufficienttime for each gear to engage.
4. Put the transmission in park (P) andleave the engine running.
5. Remove the dipstick, wiping it cleanwith a clean, dry lint free rag. Ifnecessary, refer to the Under HoodOverview in this chapter for thelocation of the dipstick.
6.Install the dipstick making sure it is fullyseated in the filler tube.
7. Remove the dipstick and inspect thefluid level. The fluid should be in thedesignated area for normal operatingtemperature or ambient temperature.

Automatic Transmission FluidFilter
Your automatic transmission is equippedwith a serviceable transmission fluid filterlocated inside the transmission bottompan. For service intervals for the automatictransmission fluid and transmission filter,See Scheduled Maintenance (page 270).

BRAKE FLUID CHECK
WARNINGS
Do not use any fluid other than therecommended brake fluid as this willreduce brake efficiency. Use ofincorrect fluid could result in the loss ofvehicle control, serious personal injury ordeath.

CHANGING THE ENGINE AIR
FILTER
WARNING
To reduce the risk of vehicle damageor personal injury, do not start theengine with the air filter removed anddo not remove it while the engine isrunning.
Note:Failure to use the correct air filterelement may result in severe enginedamage. The customer warranty may bevoid for any damage to the engine if thecorrect air filter element is not used.
When changing the air filter element, useonly the air filter element listed. SeeMotorcraft Parts (page 195). The air filterelement should be replaced at theappropriate intervals. See NormalScheduled Maintenance (page 273).
Note:Failure to use the correct air filterelement may result in severe enginedamage. Resulting component damage maynot be covered by the vehicle Warranty.
1.Disconnect the fresh air inlet tube fromthe radiator support.
2. Open the clamp that secures the twohalves of the air filter housing together.
3. Carefully separate the two halves ofthe air filter housing.
4.Remove the air filter element from thehousing.
5. Install a new air filter element. Becareful not to crimp the filter elementedges between the air filter housing.This could cause filter damage andallow unfiltered air to enter the engineif not properly seated.
6. Replace the two halves of the air filterhousing and secure the clamp.
7. Connect the fresh air inlet tube to theradiator support.

Adissimilar spare wheel and tireassembly is defined as a sparewheel and tire assembly that isdifferent in brand, size orappearance from the road tires andwheels. If you have a dissimilarspare wheel and tire assembly it isintended for temporary use onlyand should not be used in a tirerotation.
Note:After having your tiresrotated, inflation pressure must bechecked and adjusted to thevehicle requirements.
Rotating your tires at therecommended interval (asindicated in the ScheduledMaintenance chapter) helps yourtires wear more evenly, providingbetter tire performance and longertire life. Sometime irregular tirewear can be corrected by rotatingthe tires.

911 Assist Privacy Notice
When you turn on 911 Assist, it maydisclose to emergency services that yourvehicle has been in a crash involving thedeployment of an airbag or activation ofthe fuel pump shut-off. Certain versions orupdates to 911 Assist may also be capableof electronically or verbally disclosing to911 operators your vehicle location or otherdetails about your vehicle or crash to assist911 operators to provide the mostappropriate emergency services. If you donot want to disclose this information, donot turn the feature on.
