USING FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE
Four-wheel drive uses all four wheels topower the vehicle. This increases traction,enabling you to drive over terrain and roadconditions that a conventional two-wheeldrive vehicle cannot. The 4WD system isactive all the time and requires no inputfrom the operator.
Note:Your 4WD vehicle is not intended foroff-road use. The 4WD feature gives yourvehicle some limited off-road capabilitiesin which driving surfaces are relatively level,obstruction-free and otherwise similar tonormal on-road driving conditions.Operating your vehicle under other thanthose conditions could subject the vehicleto excessive stress which might result indamage which is not covered under yourwarranty.
Note:A warning message will be displayedin the information display when an 4WDsystem fault is present See InformationMessages (page 91). An 4WD system faultwill cause the 4WD system to default tofront-wheel drive only mode. When thiswarning message is displayed, have yourvehicle serviced at an authorized dealer
Note:A warning message will be displayedin the information display if the 4WD systemhas overheated See InformationMessages (page 91). This condition mayoccur if the vehicle was operated in extremeconditions with excessive wheel slip, suchas deep sand. To resume normal 4WDfunction as soon as possible, stop thevehicle in a safe location and stop theengine for at least 10 minutes. After theengine has been restarted and the 4WDsystem has adequately cooled, the warningmessage will turn off and normal 4WDfunction will return.
Do not use a spare tire of a different sizeother than the tire provided. If themini-spare tire is installed, the 4WD systemmay disable automatically and enterfront-wheel drive only mode to protectdriveline components. This condition willbe indicated by a warning in theinformation display See InformationMessages (page 91). If there is a warningmessage in the information display fromusing the spare tire, this indicator shouldturn off after reinstalling the repaired orreplaced normal road tire and cycling theignition off and on. It is recommended toreinstall the repaired or replaced road tireas soon as possible. Major dissimilar tiresizes between the front and rear axlescould cause the 4WD system to stopfunctioning and default to front-wheeldrive or damage the 4WD system.
Driving In Special Conditions WithFour-Wheel Drive (4WD)
WARNING: If you are driving inslippery conditions that require tirechains or cables, then it is critical thatyou drive cautiously. Keep speeds down,allow for longer stopping distances andavoid aggressive steering to reduce thechances of a loss of vehicle controlwhich can lead to serious injury or death.If the rear end of your vehicle slides whilecornering, steer in the direction of theslide until you regain control of yourvehicle.
4WD vehicles are equipped for driving onsand, snow, mud and rough roads and haveoperating characteristics that aresomewhat different from conventionalvehicles, both on and off the highway.
Under severe operating conditions, the A/Cmay cycle on and off to protectoverheating of the engine.

Sometimes irregular tire wear canbe corrected by rotating the tires.
USING SUMMER TIRES
Summer tires provide superiorperformance on wet and dry roads.Summer tires do not have the Mud andSnow (M+S or M/S) tire traction rating onthe tire side wall. Since summer tires donot have the same traction performanceas All-season or Snow tires, we do notrecommend using summer tires whentemperatures drop to about 45°F (7°C) orbelow (depending on tire wear andenvironmental conditions) or in snow andice conditions. Like any tire, summer tireperformance is affected by tire wear andenvironmental conditions. If you must drivein those conditions, we recommend usingMud and Snow (M+S, M/S), All-season orSnow tires.
Always store your summer tires indoors attemperatures above 19°F (-7°C). Therubber compounds used in these tires loseflexibility and may develop surface cracksin the tread area at temperatures below19°F (-7°C). If the tires have beensubjected to 19°F (-7°C) or less, warmthem in a heated space to at least 41°F(5°C) for at least 24 hours before installingthem on a vehicle, or moving the vehiclewith the tires installed, or checking tire
inflation. Do not place tires near heatersor heating devices used to warm the roomwhere the tires are stored. Do not applyheat or blow heated air directly on the tires.Always inspect the tires after storageperiods and before use.
USING SNOW CHAINS
WARNING: Snow tires must bethe same size, load index and speedrating as those originally provided byFord. Use of any tire or wheel notrecommended by Ford can affect thesafety and performance of your vehicle,which could result in an increased risk ofloss of control, vehicle rollover, personalinjury and death. Additionally, the use ofnon-recommended tires and wheels cancause steering, suspension, axle, transfercase or power transfer unit failure.Follow the Ford recommended tireinflation pressure found on the SafetyCompliance Certification Label (on thedoor hinge pillar, door latch post or thedoor edge that meets the door latchpost, next to the driver seat), or TireLabel on the B-Pillar or the edge of thedriver door. Failure to follow the tirepressure recommendations can causeuneven treadwear patterns andadversely affect the way your vehiclehandles.

The tires on your vehicle may haveall-weather treads to provide traction inrain and snow. However, in some climatesyou may need to use snow chains. If youneed to use chains, it is recommended thatsteel wheels (of the same size andspecification) be used, as chains may chipaluminum wheels. Follow these guidelineswhen using traction devices:
•Use 0.3937 in (10 mm) or less indimension as measured on the sidewallof your tire with 205/60 R16 92H or205/50 R17 93H XL. Not all S-classsnow chains meet these restrictions.Chains of this size restriction willinclude a tensioning device. (AnyLincoln or Ford passenger vehicle).
•The snow chains or cables must bemounted in pairs on only on the frontaxle.
•Purchase chains or cables from amanufacturer that clearly labels bodyto tire dimension restrictions.
•When installing tire chains or cables,make sure they are the proper size forthe tires on your vehicle and areinstalled according to the chainmanufacturer’s suggestions.
•Install cables securely, verifying thatthe cables do not extend beyond thewheel or touch the wheel, any wiring,brake lining.
•If possible, avoid fully loading yourvehicle.
•When driving with snow chains orcables, do not exceed 30 mph(48 km/h) or the maximum speedrecommended by the chainmanufacturer; whichever is less.
•Drive cautiously. If you hear the chainsor cables rub or bang against thevehicle, stop and retighten them. If thisdoes not work, remove the chains orcables and prevent vehicle damage.
•Remove the chains or cables when theyare no longer needed. Do not use thechains or cables on dry roads.
•If a temporary spare tire is mounted onyour vehicle, do not use snow chainson the axle with the temporary sparetire.

TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING
SYSTEM
WARNING: The tire pressuremonitoring system is not a substitute formanually checking tire pressures. Youshould periodically check tire pressuresusing a pressure gauge. Failure tocorrectly maintain tire pressures couldincrease the risk of tire failure, loss ofcontrol, vehicle rollover and personalinjury.
Note: You should only use tire sealants inroadside emergencies as they may causedamage to the tire pressure monitoringsystem sensor.
Note: If the tire pressure monitoring systemsensor becomes damaged, it may notfunction.
Each tire, including the spare (ifprovided), should be checkedmonthly when cold and inflatedto the inflation pressure recommended bythe vehicle manufacturer on the vehicleplacard or tire inflation pressure label. (Ifyour vehicle has tires of a different sizethan the size indicated on the vehicleplacard or tire inflation pressure label, youshould determine the proper tire inflationpressure for those tires).
