GENERAL INFORMATION
Use only approved wheel and tire sizes, using other sizes could damage yourvehicle. If you change the diameter of thetires from that fitted at the factory, thespeedometer may not display the correctspeed. Take your vehicle to an authorizedFord dealer to have the systemreprogrammed. If you intend to change thesize of the wheels from that fitted by themanufacturer, you can check the suitabilitywith an authorized dealer.
Additional information related to thefunctionality and maintenance of your tirescan be found later in this chapter. SeeGeneral Information (page 248).
The Ford recommended tire inflationpressures can be found on the Tire Label, which is located on the B-pillar or the edgeof the driver's door. This information canalso be found on the Safety ComplianceCertification Label, affixed to either thedoor hinge pillar, door-latch post, or thedoor edge that meets the door latch post;next to the driver’s seating position.
Ford strongly recommends maintainingthese tire pressures at all times. Failure tofollow the tire pressure recommendationscan cause uneven treadwear patterns, reduced fuel economy, and adverselyaffect the way your vehicle handles.
Note:Check and set the tire pressure at theambient temperature in which you areintending to drive your vehicle and when thetires are cold.
Note:Check your tire pressures at leastonce per month.
Set the pressure for your spare tire to thehighest value given for your vehicle and tiresize combination, if equipped.
Notice to utility vehicle and truckowners
WARNING: Utility vehicles have asignificantly higher rollover rate thanother types of vehicles.
WARNING: Vehicles with a highercenter of gravity (utility and four-wheeldrive vehicles) handle differently thanvehicles with a lower center of gravity(passenger cars). Avoid sharp turns, excessive speed and abrupt steering inthese vehicles. Failure to drive cautiouslyincreases the risk of losing control of yourvehicle, vehicle rollover, personal injuryand death.
WARNING: In a rollover crash, anunbelted person is significantly morelikely to die than a person wearing aseatbelt.
WARNING: Do not becomeoverconfident in the ability of four-wheeldrive vehicles. Although a four-wheeldrive vehicle may accelerate better thana two-wheel drive vehicle in low tractionsituations, it won't stop any faster thantwo-wheel drive vehicles. Always driveat a safe speed.
Utility vehicles and trucks handledifferently than passenger cars in thevarious driving conditions that areencountered on streets, highways andoff-road. Utility vehicles and trucks are notdesigned for cornering at speeds as highas passenger cars any more than low-slungsports cars are designed to performsatisfactorily under off-road conditions.

2.Firmly screw the air compressor hoseonto the valve stem by turningclockwise.
3.With the compressor off, the gauge ofthe kit will display the tire inflationpressure.
Note:If you are proceeding from the Firststage: Reinflating the tire with sealingcompound and air section and have injectedsealant in the tire and the pressure is below20 psi (1.4 bar), stop and call roadsideassistance. If tire pressure is above 20 psi(1.4 bar), continue to the next step.
4.If required, turn on the compressor andadjust the tire to the recommendedinflation pressure shown on the tirelabel located on the driver's door ordoor jamb area. The tire pressureshould be checked with thecompressor turned OFF in order to getan accurate pressure reading.
5.Unscrew the compressor hose fromthe valve stem and re-install the valvecap. Leaving the sealant bottleattached to the compressor unit, safelystore in your vehicle the tire sealant andinflator kit, the bottle lid and the orangecap.
What to do after the tire has beensealed
Note:After the sealing compound has beenused, the maximum vehicle speed is 50 mph(80 km/h) and the maximum drivingdistance is 124 mi (200 km). The sealed tireshould be inspected immediately.
You can check the tire pressure any timewithin the 124 mi (200 km) by performingthe procedure from Second stage:Checking tire pressure.
Regularly check the tire pressure until thesealed tire is repaired or replaced by a tirespecialist. Before the tire is removed fromthe trim, you must inform the tire specialistthat the tire contains sealant.
After using the kit to seal your tire, you willneed to replace the sealant canister andhose. Sealant canister and hose servicekits can be obtained at an authorized Forddealer. Empty sealant canisters may bedisposed of at home. However, canistersstill containing liquid sealant should bedisposed of by your local authorized Forddealer or tire dealer, or in accordance withlocal waste disposal regulation.
TIRE CARE
Information About UniformTire Quality Grading
Tire Quality Grades apply to newpneumatic passenger car tires. The tire Quality Grades can befound where applicable on the tiresidewall between tread shoulderand maximum section width. Forexample: Treadwear 200Traction AA Temperature A.
These Tire Quality Grades aredetermined by standards that theUnited States Department ofTransportation has set.

Check the tire pressure periodically (atleast monthly) using an accurate tiregauge. See When Inflating Your Tires inthis chapter.
Understanding Your Tire PressureMonitoring System
The tire pressure monitoring systemmeasures pressure in your road tires andsends the tire pressure readings to yourvehicle. You can view the tire pressurereadings through the information display.See General Information (page 93).Thelow tire pressure warning light will turn onif the tire pressure is significantly low. Once
the light is illuminated, your tires areunder-inflated and need to be inflated tothe manufacturer’s recommended tirepressure. Even if the light turns on and ashort time later turns off, your tire pressurestill needs to be checked.
When Your Temporary Spare Tire isInstalled
When one of your road tires needs to bereplaced with the temporary spare, thesystem will continue to identify an issue toremind you that the damaged road wheeland tire assembly needs to be repaired andput back on your vehicle.
To restore the full function of the tirepressure monitoring system, have thedamaged road wheel and tire assemblyrepaired and remounted on your vehicle.
When You Believe Your System is NotOperating Properly
The main function of the tire pressuremonitoring system is to warn you whenyour tires need air. It can also warn you inthe event the system is no longer capableof functioning as intended. See thefollowing chart for information concerningyour tire pressure monitoring system:

When Inflating Your Tires
WARNING: Do not use the tirepressure displayed in the informationdisplay as a tire pressure gauge. Failureto follow this instruction could result inpersonal injury or death.
When putting air into your tires (such as ata gas station or in your garage), the tirepressure monitoring system will notrespond immediately to the air added toyour tires.
It could take up to two minutes of drivingover 20 mph (32 km/h) for the light to turnoff after you have filled your tires to therecommended inflation pressure.
How Temperature Affects Your TirePressure
The tire pressure monitoring systemmonitors tire pressure in each pneumatictire. While driving in a normal manner, atypical passenger tire inflation pressurecould increase about 2–4 psi (14–28 kPa)from a cold start situation. If the vehicle isstationary overnight with the outsidetemperature significantly lower than thedaytime temperature, the tire pressurecould decrease about 3 psi (21 kPa) for adrop of 30°F (17°C) in ambienttemperature. This lower pressure valuecould be detected by the tire pressuremonitoring system as being significantlylower than the recommended inflationpressure and activate the system warninglight for low tire pressure. If the low tirepressure warning light is on, visually checkeach tire to verify that no tire is flat. If oneor more tires are flat, repair as necessary.Check the air pressure in the road tires. Ifany tire is under-inflated, carefully drivethe vehicle to the nearest location whereair can be added to the tires. Inflate all thetires to the recommended inflationpressure.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System ResetProcedure
WARNING: To determine therequired pressure(s) for your vehicle, seethe Safety Compliance CertificationLabel (on the door hinge pillar,door-latch post or the door edge thatmeets the door-latch post, next to thedriver seat) or the Tire Label on theB-Pillar or the edge of the driver door.
Note:You need to perform the tire pressuremonitoring system reset procedure aftereach tire rotation.
To provide the vehicle's load carryingcapability, some vehicles require differentrecommended tire pressures in the fronttires as compared to the rear tires. The tirepressure monitoring system equipped onthese vehicles is designed to illuminate thelow tire pressure warning light at twodifferent pressures; one for the front tiresand one for the rear tires.
Since tires need to be rotated to provideconsistent performance and maximum tirelife, the tire pressure monitoring systemneeds to know when the tires are rotatedto determine which set of tires are on thefront and which are on the rear. With thisinformation, the system can detect andproperly warn of low tire pressures.

•To reduce the chances of interferencefrom another vehicle, perform thesystem reset procedure at least 3 ft(1 m) away from another Ford MotorCompany vehicle undergoing thesystem reset procedure at the sametime.
•Do not wait more than two minutesbetween resetting each tire sensor orthe system can time-out and you haveto repeat the entire procedure on allfour wheels.
•A double horn sounds indicating theneed to repeat the procedure.
Performing the System Reset Procedure
Read the entire procedure beforeattempting.
1.Drive the vehicle above 20 mph(32 km/h) for at least two minutes, then park in a safe location where youcan easily get to all four tires and haveaccess to an air pump.
2.Place the ignition in the off position andkeep the key in the ignition.
3.Cycle the ignition to the on positionwith the engine off.
4.Turn the hazard flashers on then offthree times. You must accomplish thiswithin 10 seconds. If you successfullyenter the reset mode, the horn soundsonce, the system indicator flashes anda message shows in the informationdisplay. If this does not occur, pleasetry again starting at step 2. If afterrepeated attempts to enter the resetmode, the horn does not sound, thesystem indicator does not flash and nomessage shows in the informationdisplay, seek service from yourauthorized dealer.
5.Train the tire pressure monitoringsystem sensors in the tires using thefollowing system reset sequencestarting with the left front tire in thefollowing clockwise order: Left front -driver side front tire, Right front -passenger side front tire, Right rear -passenger side rear tire, Left rear -driver side rear tire.
6.Remove the valve cap from the valvestem on the left front tire. Decrease theair pressure until the horn sounds.
Note:The single horn tone confirms thatthe sensor identification code has beenlearned by the module for this position. If adouble horn is heard, the reset procedurewas unsuccessful, and you must repeat it.
7.Remove the valve cap from the valvestem on the right front tire. Decreasethe air pressure until the horn sounds.
8.Remove the valve cap from the valvestem on the right rear tire. Decrease theair pressure until the horn sounds.
9.Remove the valve cap from the valvestem on the left rear tire. Decrease theair pressure until the horn sounds.Training is complete after the hornsounds for the last tire trained, driverside rear tire, the system indicatorstops flashing, and a message showsin the information display.
10.Turn the ignition off. If two short hornbeeps are heard, the reset procedurewas unsuccessful and you mustrepeat it. If after repeating theprocedure and two short beeps areheard when the ignition is turned tooff, seek assistance from yourauthorized dealer.
