Exiting Four-wheel-down Towing
To exit four-wheel-down towing and returnthe transfer case to its 2H position:
1.With your vehicle still properly securedto the tow vehicle, put the ignition inthe on position, but do not start theengine. If your vehicle has an ignitionkey, turn the key to on. If your vehiclehas intelligent access, press the engineSTART/STOP button twice withoutpressing the brake pedal.
2. Press and hold the brake pedal.
3.Shift the transmission out of N and intoany gear.
4. Release the brake pedal.
Note:If completed successfully, theinstrument cluster displays 4X2, andNEUTRAL TOW DISABLED.
Note:If the indicator light and message donot display, you must perform the procedureagain from the beginning.
Note:You may hear an audible noise as thetransfer case shifts out of its neutralposition. This is normal.
Note:If SHIFT DELAY PULL FORWARDdisplays in the instrument cluster, transfercase gear tooth blockage is present. See theinstructions after this section.
5. Apply the parking brake, and thendisconnect the vehicle from the towvehicle.
6. Release the parking brake, start theengine, and shift the transmission toposition D to make sure the transfercase is out of position N.
7. If the transfer case does notsuccessfully shift out of position N, setthe parking brake until you can haveyour vehicle serviced.
Resolving the SHIFT DELAY PULLFORWARD Message
If the instrument cluster displays SHIFTDELAY PULL FORWARD perform thefollowing:
1. Press and hold the brake pedal.
2. Put the transmission into position N,and then start the engine.
3. With the engine running, shift thetransmission to position D and let thevehicle roll forward, up to 3 feet (1meter). You may hear an audible noiseas the transfer case shifts out of itsneutral position. This is normal.
4. Make sure the instrument clusterdisplays NEUTRAL TOW DISABLED.

Note:When you try to restart your vehicleafter a fuel shutoff, the vehicle makes surethat various systems are safe to restart.Once your vehicle determines that thesystems are safe, then the vehicle will allowyou to restart.
Note:In the event that your vehicle doesnot restart after your third attempt, contactan authorized dealer.
JUMP STARTING THE VEHICLE
WARNINGS
Batteries normally produce explosivegases which can cause personalinjury. Therefore, do not allowflames, sparks or lighted substances tocome near the battery. When working nearthe battery, always shield your face andprotect your eyes. Always provide correctventilation.
Keep batteries out of reach ofchildren. Batteries contain sulfuricacid. Avoid contact with skin, eyes orclothing. Shield your eyes when workingnear the battery to protect against possiblesplashing of acid solution. In case of acidcontact with skin or eyes, flushimmediately with water for a minimum of15 minutes and get prompt medicalattention. If acid is swallowed, call aphysician immediately.
Use only adequately sized cableswith insulated clamps.
Preparing Your Vehicle
Do not attempt to push-start yourautomatic transmission vehicle.
Note:Attempting to push-start a vehiclewith an automatic transmission may causetransmission damage.
Note:Use only a 12-volt supply to start yourvehicle.
Note:Do not disconnect the battery of thedisabled vehicle as this could damage thevehicle electrical system.
Park the booster vehicle close to the hoodof the disabled vehicle, making sure thetwo vehicles do not touch.
Connecting the Jumper Cables
WARNINGS
Do not attach the cables to fuel lines,engine rocker covers, the intakemanifold or electrical componentsas grounding points. Stay clear of movingparts. To avoid reverse polarityconnections, make sure that you correctlyidentify the positive (+) and negative (-)terminals on both the disabled and boostervehicles before connecting the cables.
Do not attach the end of the positivecable to the studs or L-shaped eyeletlocated above the positive (+)terminal of your vehicle’s battery. Highcurrent may flow through and causedamage to the fuses.
Do not connect the end of thesecond cable to the negative (-)terminal of the battery to be jumped.A spark may cause an explosion of thegases that surround the battery.
Note:In the illustration, the bottom vehiclerepresents the booster vehicle.

ENGINE OIL CHECK
To check the engine oil level consistentlyand accurately, do the following:
1.Make sure the parking brake is on. Makesure the transmission is in park (P) orneutral (N).
2. Run the engine until it reaches normaloperating temperature.
3. Make sure that your vehicle is on levelground.
4. Switch the engine off and wait 15minutes for the oil to drain into the oilpan. Checking the engine oil level toosoon after you switch the engine offmay result in an inaccurate reading.
5. Open the hood. See Opening andClosing the Hood (page 243).
6. Remove the dipstick and wipe it witha clean, lint-free cloth. See UnderHood Overview (page 244).
7. Replace the dipstick and remove itagain to check the oil level. SeeEngine Oil Dipstick (page 245).
8.Make sure that the oil level is betweenthe maximum and minimum marks. Ifthe oil level is at the minimum mark,add oil immediately. See Capacitiesand Specifications (page 308).
9. If the oil level is correct, replace thedipstick and make sure it is fully seated.
Note:Do not remove the dipstick when theengine is running.
Note: If the oil level is between themaximum and minimum marks, the oil levelis acceptable. Do not add oil.
Note:The oil consumption of new enginesreaches its normal level after approximately3,100 mi (5,000 km).
Adding Engine Oil
WARNING
Do not remove the filler cap whenthe engine is running.

Your vehicle has limited engine powerwhen in the fail-safe mode, drive yourvehicle with caution. Your vehicle does notmaintain high-speed operation and theengine may operate poorly.
Remember that the engine is capable ofautomatically shutting down to preventengine damage. In this situation:
1. Pull off the road as soon as safelypossible and switch the engine off.
2. If you are a member of a roadsideassistance program, we recommendthat you contact your roadsideassistance service provider.
3. If this is not possible, wait a shortperiod for the engine to cool.
4. Check the coolant level. If the coolantlevel is at or below the minimum mark,add prediluted coolant immediately.
5. When the engine temperature cools,you can re-start the engine. Have yourvehicle checked as soon as possible tominimize engine damage.
Note:Driving your vehicle without repairincreases the chance of engine damage.
Engine Coolant TemperatureManagement (If Equipped)
WARNING
To reduce the risk of crash and injury,be prepared that the vehicle speedmay reduce and the vehicle may notbe able to accelerate with full power untilthe coolant temperature reduces.
If you tow a trailer with your vehicle, theengine may temporarily reach higher atemperature during severe operatingconditions, for example ascending a longor steep grade in high ambienttemperatures.
At this time, you may notice the coolanttemperature gauge moves toward the redzone and a message may appear in theinformation display.
You may notice a reduction in vehiclespeed caused by reduced engine power.In order to manage the engine coolanttemperature. Your vehicle may enter thismode if certain high-temperature andhigh-load conditions take place. Theamount of speed reduction depends onvehicle loading, grade and ambienttemperature. If this occurs, there is no needto pull off the road. You can continue todrive your vehicle.
The air conditioning may automaticallyturn on and off during severe operatingconditions to protect the engine fromoverheating. When the coolanttemperature decreases to the normaloperating temperature, the air conditioningturns on.
If the coolant temperature gauge movesfully into the red zone, or if the coolanttemperature warning or service enginesoon messages appear in your informationdisplay, do the following:
1. Pull off the road as soon as safelypossible and shift the transmission intopark (P).
2. Leave the engine running until thecoolant temperature gauge needlereturns to the normal position. Afterseveral minutes, if the temperaturedoes not drop, follow the remainingsteps.
3.Switch the engine off and wait for it tocool. Check the coolant level.
4. If the coolant level is at or below theminimum mark, add prediluted coolantimmediately.
5. If the coolant level is normal, restartthe engine and continue.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
FLUID CHECK
If required, have an authorized dealer checkand change the transmission fluid at thecorrect service interval. See ScheduledMaintenance (page 443).
The automatic transmission does not havea transmission fluid dipstick.
Refer to your scheduled maintenanceinformation for scheduled intervals for fluidchecks and changes. Your transmissiondoes not consume fluid. However, if thetransmission slips, shifts slowly or if younotice a sign of leaking fluid, contact anauthorized dealer.
Do not use supplemental transmissionfluid additives, treatments or cleaningagents. The use of these materials mayaffect transmission operation and resultin damage to internal transmissioncomponents.
TRANSFER CASE FLUID
CHECK (If Equipped)
1. Clean the area around the filler plug.
2. Remove the filler plug.
3. Inspect the fluid level. The fluid levelshould be within 0.20 in (5mm) fromthe bottom of the hole.
4.Add fluid through the filler opening. Fillto the bottom of the opening.
Use only fluid that meets Fordspecifications. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 304).

Tire Change Procedure
WARNINGS
Only use replacement tires andwheels that are the same size, loadindex, speed rating and type (suchas P-metric versus LT-metric or all-seasonversus all-terrain) as those originallyprovided by Ford. The recommended tireand wheel size may be found on either theSafety Compliance Certification Label(affixed to either the door hinge pillar,door-latch post, or the door edge thatmeets the door-latch post, next to thedriver’s seating position) or the Tire Labelwhich is located on the B-Pillar or edge ofthe driver’s door. If this information is notfound on these labels then you shouldcontact your authorized dealer as soon aspossible. Use of any tire or wheel notrecommended by Ford can affect thesafety and performance of your vehicle,which could result in an increased risk ofloss of vehicle control, vehicle rollover,personal injury and death. Additionally theuse of non-recommended tires and wheelscould cause steering, suspension, axle,transfer case or power transfer unit failure.If you have questions regarding tirereplacement, contact your authorizeddealer as soon as possible.
When one of the front wheels is offthe ground, the transmission alonewill not prevent the vehicle frommoving or slipping off the jack.
To help prevent the vehicle frommoving when you change a tire, besure to place the transmission in park(P), set the parking brake and block (inboth directions) the wheel that isdiagonally opposite (other side and end ofthe vehicle) to the tire being changed.
Never get underneath a vehicle thatis supported only by a jack. If thevehicle slips off the jack, you orsomeone else could be seriously injured.
WARNINGS
Do not attempt to change a tire onthe side of the vehicle close tomoving traffic. Pull far enough off theroad to avoid the danger of being hit whenoperating the jack or changing the wheel.
Always use the jack provided asoriginal equipment with your vehicle.If using a jack other than the oneprovided as original equipment with yourvehicle, make sure the jack capacity isadequate for the vehicle weight, includingany vehicle cargo or modifications.
Disable the power running boardsbefore jacking, lifting, or placing anyobject under the vehicle. Never placeyour hand between the power runningboard and the vehicle as extended powerrunning boards will retract when the doorsare closed. Failure to follow theseinstructions may result in personal injury.
Failure to follow these instructionswhen using the spare tire carriercould cause loss of the wheel andtire and lead to personal injury: Only usethe spare tire carrier to stow the tire andwheel combination specified on the TireLabel or Safety Compliance CertificationLabel on the B-Pillar or the edge of thedriver door. Other tire and wheelcombinations could cause the carrier tofail if it does not fit securely or is too heavy.Do not use impact tools or power toolsoperating over 200 RPM, which may causewinch malfunction and prevent a securefit. Override the winch at least three times(there will be an audible click each time)to ensure a tight secure fit of the wheel andtire.
Note:Passengers should not remain in thevehicle when the vehicle is being jacked.

Park on a level surface, activate the hazardflashers and set the parking brake. Then,place the transmission in park (P) and turnthe engine off.
Removing the Jack and Tools
Note:Pay close attention to the orientationof the bag, because it will have to bereinstalled after changing the tire.
1. Open the liftgate, then locate theaccess panel on the floor behind thethird row seat. Unlatch and remove thepanel.
2. Remove the jack and tools assemblytray from the compartment by turningthe wing-nut counterclockwise.Remove the bag from the jack andtools assembly tray by loosening thestrap.
3.Unsnap the wheel lug nut wrench, jackextension and handle from the plastictray.
4. Remove the hack from the trayassembly.
Removing the Spare Tire
1. Remove the jack handle and winchextension from the tray and assemblethem.
2. Open the spare tire winch access plugat the bottom of the compartment forthe jack and tools tray.
3. Insert the winch extension toolassembly through the access hole inthe floor and engage the winch.
4. To remove the spare tire, turn thehandle counterclockwise until the tireis lowered to the ground and the cableis slightly slack.
5.Slide the retainer through the center ofthe spare tire wheel and remove thespare tire.
