Failure to Start
If you cannot start the engine after threeattempts, wait 10 seconds and follow thisprocedure:
1. Fully depress the brake pedal.
2. Fully press the accelerator pedal andhold it there.
3. Start the engine.
Stopping the Engine When YourVehicle is Stationary
1. When your vehicle has stopped, shiftinto park (P) and switch the ignitionoff.
2. Apply the parking brake.
Stopping the Engine When YourVehicle is Moving
WARNING
Switching off the engine when thevehicle is still moving will result in aloss of brake and steering assistance.The steering will not lock, but higher effortwill be required. When the ignition isswitched off, some electrical circuits,including air bags, warning lamps andindicators may also be off. If the ignitionwas turned off accidentally, you can shiftinto neutral (N) and re-start the engine.
1. Put the transmission into neutral (N)and use the brakes to bring your vehicleto a safe stop.
2. When your vehicle has stopped, shiftinto park (P) and switch the ignitionoff.
3. Apply the parking brake.
Cold Weather Starting (FlexibleFuel Vehicles Only)
The starting characteristics of all gradesof E85 ethanol make it unsuitable for usewhen ambient temperatures fall below-0°F (-18°C). Consult your fuel distributorfor the availability of winter grade ethanol.As the outside temperature approachesfreezing, ethanol fuel distributors shouldsupply winter grade ethanol, the same aswith unleaded gasoline.
If summer grade ethanol is used in coldweather conditions, -0°F (-18°C), you mayexperience increased cranking times, roughidle or hesitation until the engine haswarmed up.
You may experience a decrease inperformance when the engine is cold whenoperating on E85 ethanol.
Do not use starting fluid such as ether inthe air intake system. Such fluid couldcause immediate explosive damage to theengine and possible personal injury.
If you should experience cold weatherstarting problems on E85 ethanol, andneither an alternative brand of E85 ethanolnor an engine block heater is available, theaddition of unleaded gasoline to your tankimproves cold starting performance. Yourvehicle is designed to operate on E85ethanol alone, unleaded gasoline alone, orany mixture of the two.
If the Engine Fails to Start Using thePreceding Instructions (Flexible FuelVehicles Only)
1. Press the accelerator pedal downone-third to one-half of its travel, andthen crank the engine.
2. When the engine starts, release thekey, then gradually release theaccelerator pedal as the engine speedincreases. If the engine still does notstart, repeat Step 1.

Guarding Against Exhaust Fumes
WARNING
Exhaust leaks may result in entry ofharmful and potentially lethal fumesinto the passenger compartment. Ifyou smell exhaust fumes inside yourvehicle, have your vehicle inspectedimmediately. Do not drive if you smellexhaust fumes.
Important Ventilating Information
If you stop your vehicle and then leave theengine idling for long periods of time, werecommend that you do one of thefollowing:
•Open the windows at least 1 inch (2.5centimeters).
•Set your climate control to outside air.
STARTING A DIESEL ENGINE -
6.7L DIESEL
Read all starting instructions carefullybefore you start your vehicle.
For temperatures below 32°F (0°C), theuse of the correct grade engine oil isessential for proper operation. Refer toengine oil specifications for moreinformation. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 427).
Your vehicle may have a cold weatherstarting strategy that prevents severeengine damage by assisting in enginelubrication warm-up. In extremely coldambient temperatures, this strategyactivates and prevents the acceleratorpedal from being used for 30 seconds afteryou start your vehicle. A message appearsin the information display as your vehiclewarms up. By not allowing the acceleratorpedal to be used, the engine oil is allowedto properly lubricate the bearings
preventing engine damage due to lack ofproper lubrication. After the 30 secondwarm-up period, the accelerator pedal willbe operational again and a messageappears informing you the vehicle is ok todrive.
When you start the engine in extremelycold temperatures -15°F (-26°C), werecommend that you allow the engine toidle for several minutes before you drivethe vehicle.
Before starting the engine check thefollowing:
•Make sure all occupants have fastenedtheir seatbelts.
•Make sure the headlamps andelectrical accessories are off.
•Make sure the parking brake is on.
•Make sure the transmission is in park(P).
Note:Do not press the accelerator duringstarting.
Diesel Engine Fast Start Glow PlugSystem
The diesel engine glow system consists of:
•Eight glow plugs (one per cylinder)
•Glow Plug Control Module
•Engine Coolant Temperature sensor
•Barometric pressure sensor
•Environmental temperature sensor
The powertrain and glow plug controlmodules electronically control the glowplug system. After you switch the ignitionon, the glow plug control moduleimmediately energizes the glow plugs. Theglow plug control module uses the enginecoolant temperature, barometric pressuresensor and environmental temperature

Operation in Standing Water
Ingestion of water into the diesel enginecan result in immediate and severedamage to the engine. If driving throughwater, slow down to avoid splashing waterinto the intake. If the engine stalls, and yoususpect ingestion of water into the engine,do not try to restart the engine. Consultyour dealer for service immediately.
Your fuel tank vents to the atmosphere byvalves on top of the tank and through thefuel cap. If water reaches the top of thetank, the valves may pull water into thefuel tank. Water in the fuel can causeperformance issues and damage the fuelinjection system.
DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER
The filter forms part of the emissionsreduction system on your vehicle. It filtersharmful diesel particulates (soot) from theexhaust gas.
Regeneration
WARNING
Do not park or idle your vehicle overdry leaves, dry grass or othercombustible materials. Theregeneration process creates very highexhaust gas temperatures and the exhaustwill radiate a considerable amount of heatduring and after regeneration and after youhave switched the engine off. This is apotential fire hazard.
Note:Avoid running out of fuel.
Note:During regeneration at low speed orengine idle, you may smell a hot metallicodor and could notice a clicking metallicsound. This is due to the high temperaturesreached during regeneration and is normal.
Note:Changes in the engine or exhaustsound may be heard during the regenerationprocess.
The diesel particulate filter on your vehiclerequires periodic regeneration to maintainits correct function. Your vehicle will carryout this process automatically.
If your journeys meet one of the followingconditions:
•You drive only short distances.
•You frequently switch the ignition onand off.
•Your journeys contain a high level ofacceleration and deceleration.
You must carry out occasional trips withthe following conditions to assist theregeneration process:
•Drive your vehicle in more favorableconditions, which you will find at highervehicle speeds in normal driving, on amain road or freeway for a minimumof 20 minutes. This drive may includeshort stops that will not affect theregeneration process.
•Avoid prolonged idling and alwaysobserve speed limits and roadconditions.
•Do not switch the ignition off.
•Select a suitable gear to ideallymaintain engine speed between 1500and 3000 RPM.

Forced downshifts
•Allowed in drive (D) with the tow/haulfeature on or off.
•Press the accelerator to the floor.
•Allows transmission to select anappropriate gear.
Tow/Haul Mode
WARNING
Do not use the tow/haul featurewhen driving in icy or slipperyconditions as the increased enginebraking can cause the rear wheels to slideand your vehicle to swing around with thepossible loss of vehicle control.
To activate tow/haul, press thebutton on the gearshift leveronce. The TOW HAUL indicatorlight illuminates in the instrument cluster.
The tow/haul feature:
•Delays upshifts to reduce the frequencyof transmission shifting.
•Provides engine braking in all forwardgears, which slows your vehicle andassists you in controlling your vehiclewhen descending a grade.
•Depending on driving conditions andload conditions, may downshift thetransmission, slow your vehicle andcontrol your vehicle speed whendescending a hill, without pressing theaccelerator pedal. The amount ofdownshift braking provided will varybased upon the amount you press thebrake pedal.
The tow/haul feature improvestransmission operation when towing atrailer or a heavy load. All transmissiongear ranges are available when usingtow/haul.
Note:If your vehicle is equipped with theAdaptive Steering System, enabling thetow/haul feature will adjust the steeringresponse. In tow/haul mode the AdaptiveSteering system reduces vehicle sensitivityto steering inputs at higher vehicle speedswhile maintaining the ease of parking andmaneuverability at low speeds. SeeSteering (page 256).
To deactivate the tow/haul feature andreturn to normal driving mode, press thebutton on the gearshift lever whentow/haul is active. The TOW HAUL lightdeactivates. Tow/haul also deactivateswhen you power down your vehicle.
Understanding your SelectShiftAutomatic™ transmission (If Equipped)
Your vehicle is equipped with a SelectShiftAutomatic™ transmission gearshift lever.The SelectShift Automatic transmissiongives you the ability to change gears up ordown (without a clutch) as desired.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Note:Occasional brake noise is normal. Ifa metal-to-metal, continuous grinding orcontinuous squeal sound is present, thebrake linings may be worn-out. Have thesystem checked by an authorized dealer. Ifyour vehicle has continuous vibration orshudder in the steering wheel while braking,have it checked by an authorized dealer.
Note:Brake dust may accumulate on thewheels, even under normal drivingconditions. Some dust is inevitable as thebrakes wear and does not contribute tobrake noise. See Cleaning the Wheels(page 370).

Wet brakes result in reduced brakingefficiency. Gently press the brake pedal afew times when driving from a car wash orstanding water to dry the brakes.
Brake Over Accelerator
In the event the accelerator pedalbecomes stuck or entrapped, apply steadyand firm pressure to the brake pedal toslow the vehicle and reduce engine power.If you experience this condition, apply thebrakes and bring your vehicle to a safestop. Move the transmission to park (P),switch the engine off and apply the parkingbrake. Inspect the accelerator pedal forany interference. If none are found and thecondition persists, have your vehicle towedto the nearest authorized dealer.
Brake Assist
Brake assist detects when you brakerapidly by measuring the rate at which youpress the brake pedal. It providesmaximum braking efficiency as long as youpress the pedal, and can reduce stoppingdistances in critical situations.
Anti-lock Brake System
This system helps you maintain steeringcontrol during emergency stops by keepingthe brakes from locking.
This lamp momentarilyilluminates when you switch theignition on. If the light does notilluminate during start up, remains on orflashes, the system may be disabled. Havethe system checked by an authorizeddealer. If the anti-lock brake system isdisabled, normal braking is still effective.
If the brake warning lampremains illuminated after yourelease the parking brake, havethe system checked by an authorizeddealer.
Diesel Engine Braking (If Equipped)
WARNING
Do not use tow/haul or enginebraking when driving in icy or slipperyconditions as the increased brakingcan cause the rear wheels to slide and yourvehicle to swing around with the possibleloss of vehicle control.
This feature increases engine braking athigher engine speeds to provide bettergrade descent control with less brake andtransmission wear and tear. It alsoimproves engine braking when towing orcarrying heavy loads.
Press the button on the switchbank next to the audio unit toswitch the system on or off.
There are two engine brake modes, manualand automatic.
Manual Engine Braking
1. Press the button to switch on manualengine braking.

Apply the parking brake whenever yourvehicle is parked. Press the pedaldownward to set the parking brake. Thebrake warning lamp in the instrumentcluster will illuminate and remainsilluminated until the parking brake isreleased.
To release, pull the brake release leverlocated at the lower left side of theinstrument panel.
If you are parking your vehicle on a gradeor with a trailer, press and hold the brakepedal down, then set the parking brake.There may be a little vehicle movement asthe parking brake sets to hold the vehicle'sweight. This is normal and should be noreason for concern. If needed, press andhold the service brake pedal down, thentry reapplying the parking brake. Chock thewheels if required. If the parking brakecannot hold the weight of the vehicle, theparking brake may need to be serviced orthe vehicle may be overloaded.
HILL START ASSIST
WARNINGS
The system does not replace theparking brake. When you leave yourvehicle, always apply the parkingbrake and shift the transmission into park(P) (automatic transmission) or first gear(1) (manual transmission).
You must remain in your vehicle onceyou have activated the system.
During all times, you are responsiblefor controlling your vehicle,supervising the system andintervening, if required.
If the engine is revved excessively, orif a malfunction is detected, thesystem will be deactivated.
The system makes it easier to pull awaywhen your vehicle is on a slope without theneed to use the parking brake.
When the system is active, your vehicle willremain stationary on the slope for two tothree seconds after you release the brakepedal. This allows you time to move yourfoot from the brake to the acceleratorpedal. The brakes release automaticallywhen the engine has sufficient torque toprevent your vehicle from rolling down thegrade. This is an advantage when pullingaway on a slope, for example from a carpark ramp, traffic lights or when reversinguphill into a parking space.
The system will activate automatically onany slope that will cause significant vehiclerollback. For vehicles with a manualtransmission, you can switch this featureoff using the information display. SeeInformation Displays (page 111). Thesystem will remain on or off depending onhow it was last set.
Note:There is no warning lamp to indicatethe system is either on or off.
Note:If your vehicle is equipped with AutoHold, Hill Start Assist will not be availablewhile Auto Hold is active.
Using Hill Start Assist
1. Bring your vehicle to a completestandstill. Keep the brake pedalpressed and select an uphill gear (forexample, first (1) when facing uphill orreverse (R) when facing downhill).
2. If the sensors detect that your vehicleis on a slope, the system will activateautomatically.
3. When you remove your foot from thebrake pedal, your vehicle will remainon the slope without rolling away forabout two or three seconds. This holdtime will automatically be extended ifyou are in the process of driving off.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNINGS
Hill descent control cannot controldescent in all surface conditions andcircumstances, such as ice orextremely steep grades. Hill descentcontrol is a driver assist system and cannotsubstitute for good judgment by the driver.Failure to do so may result in loss of vehiclecontrol, crash or serious injury.
Hill descent control does not providehill hold at zero miles per hour (0kilometers per hour). When stopped,the parking brake must be applied or thevehicle must be placed in P (Park) or itmay roll away.
Hill descent control allows the driver to setand maintain vehicle speed whiledescending steep grades in various surfaceconditions.
Hill descent control can maintain vehiclespeeds on downhill grades between 2 mph(3 km/h) and 12 mph (20 km/h). Above 20mph (32 km/h), the system remainsarmed, but descent speed cannot be setor maintained.
Hill descent control requires a coolingdown interval after a period of sustaineduse. The amount of time that the featurecan remain active before cooling varieswith conditions. The system will provide awarning in the message center and a chimewill sound when the system is about todisengage for cooling. At this time,manually apply the brakes as needed tomaintain descent speed.
USING HILL DESCENT
CONTROL
Press and release the hilldescent button located on theinstrument panel. A light in thecluster will illuminate and a chime willsound when this feature is activated.
To increase descent speed, press theaccelerator pedal until the desired speedis reached. To decrease descent speed,press the brake pedal until the desiredspeed is reached.
Whether accelerating or decelerating, oncethe desired descent speed is reached,remove your feet from the pedals and thechosen vehicle speed will be maintained.
Note:Noise from the ABS pump motor maybe observed during hill descent controloperation. This is a normal characteristic ofthe ABS and should be no reason forconcern.
Hill descent modes
•At speeds below 20 mph (32 km/h):When the Hill Descent Control switchis pressed and Hill Descent Control isactive, the Hill Descent Control telltalewill flash.
•At speeds below 20 mph (32 km/h):When the Hill Descent Control switchis pressed and conditions are notcorrect for hill descent activation, theHill Descent Control system will beenabled, the Hill Descent Controltelltale will be solid and a message willdisplay in the information display.
•At speeds above 20 mph (32 km/h):When the Hill Descent Control switchis pressed, the Hill Descent Controlsystem will be enabled, the telltale inthe cluster will not be illuminated anda message will be displayed in theinformation display.
