The Safety Canopy deploys duringsignificant side crashes or when a certainlikelihood of a rollover event is detectedby the rollover sensor. The Safety Canopyis mounted to the roof side-rail sheetmetal, behind the headliner, above eachrow of seats. In certain sideways crashesor rollover events, the Safety Canopy willbe activated, regardless of which seats areoccupied. The Safety Canopy is designedto inflate between the side window areaand occupants to further enhanceprotection provided in side impact crashesand rollover events.
The system consists of the following:
•Safety Canopy curtain airbags locatedabove the trim panels over the frontand rear side windows identified by alabel or wording on the headliner orroof-pillar trim.
•A flexible headliner which opens abovethe side doors to allow air curtaindeployment
· Crash sensors and monitoringsystem with a readinessindicator. See Crash Sensorsand Airbag Indicator (page 52).
Properly restrain children 12 years old andunder in the rear seats. The Safety Canopywill not interfere with children restrainedusing a properly installed child or boosterseat because it is designed to inflatedownward from the headliner above thedoors along the side window opening.
The design and development of the SafetyCanopy included recommended testingprocedures that were developed by agroup of automotive safety experts knownas the Side Airbag Technical WorkingGroup. These recommended testingprocedures help reduce the risk of injuriesrelated to the deployment of side airbags(including the Safety Canopy).
CRASH SENSORS AND
AIRBAG INDICATOR
WARNING
Modifying or adding equipment tothe front end of the vehicle (includingframe, bumper, front end bodystructure and tow hooks) may affect theperformance of the airbag system,increasing the risk of injury. Do not modifythe front end of the vehicle.
Your vehicle has a collection of crash andoccupant sensors which provideinformation to the restraints controlmodule which deploys (activates) thefront safety belt pretensioners, driverairbag, passenger airbag, seat mountedside airbags, and the Safety Canopy®.Based on the type of crash (frontal impact,side impact or rollover), the restraintscontrol module will deploy the appropriatesafety devices.

USING POWER RUNNING
BOARDS
WARNINGS
In extreme climates, excessive icebuildup may occur, causing therunning boards not to deploy. Makesure that the running boards havedeployed, and have finished moving beforeattempting to step on them. The runningboards will resume normal function oncethe blockage is cleared.
Switch off the running boards beforejacking or placing any object underyour vehicle. Never place your handbetween the extended running board andyour vehicle. A moving running board maycause injury.
Note:Do not use the running boards, frontand rear hinge assemblies, running boardmotors, or the running board underbodymounts to lift your vehicle when jacking.Always use proper jacking points.
Note:The running boards may operatemore slowly in cool temperatures.
Note:The running board mechanism maytrap debris such as mud, dirt, snow, ice andsalt. This may cause unwanted noise. If thishappens, manually set the running boardsto the deployed position. Then, wash thesystem, in particular the front and rear hingearms, with a high-pressure car wash wand.
Automatic Power Deploy
The running boards automatically extenddown and out when you open the door.This can help you enter and exit yourvehicle.
Automatic Power Stow
When you close the doors, the runningboards return to the stowed position aftera two-second delay.
Manual Power Deploy
You can manually operate the runningboards in the information display. SeeGeneral Information (page 111).
Set the running boards in the deployedposition (OUT) to access the roof.
The running boards return to the stowedposition and enter automatic mode whenthe vehicle speed exceeds 3 mph (5 km/h).
Enabling and Disabling
You can enable and disable the powerrunning board feature in the informationdisplay. See General Information (page111).

Cargo and Trailer Hookup Lamps
The cargo lamps are positioned in thecentral high mounted stop lamp and toeither side of the cargo box.
The trailer hookup lamp is positioned onthe tailgate next to the handle.
Pressing the button located inthe lighting control panel or thebutton located in the cargo boxnear the lamp switches on both of theselamps.
When switched on, these lamps light thecargo area of your vehicle and the trailerhitch.
Note:The cargo and trailer hookup lampsturn off automatically when you reach aspeed of 3 mph (5 km/h). They also turn offautomatically after 10 minutes, fadinggradually to off.
INTERIOR LAMPS
The following lamps switch on when:
•You open any door.
•You press a remote control button.
Front Interior Lamps
Note:The front interior lamp switches areon the overhead console. The exact locationof each switch on the overhead consoledepends upon which roof, sunroof, andwindow shade features are equipped on thevehicle.
Note:Touch the required switch to switchthe door function off when you open anydoor. When the door function is off and youopen a door, the courtesy and door lampswill stay off. Touch the switch again toswitch the door function back on. When thedoor function is on and you open a door, thecourtesy and door lamps will switch on.

MOONROOF (If Equipped)
WARNINGS
Do not leave children unattended inyour vehicle and do not let them playwith the moonroof. They mayseriously injure themselves.
When closing the moonroof, youshould verify that it is free ofobstructions and make sure thatchildren and pets are not in the proximityof the roof opening.
The moonroof controls are located on theoverhead console and have a one-touchopen and close feature. To stop itsmovement during one-touch operation,press the control a second time.

Sunshade Open
Press and release to open the sunshade.The sunshade opens automatically withthe moonroof. You can also open thesunshade with the moonroof closed.
Note:The sunshade stops short of its fullyopened position for the comfort of rearpassengers. To open the sunshade fully,press the control again.

The moonroof automatically reversessome distance if an obstacle is detectedwhile closing.
To override this feature, press and hold (E)within two seconds after the roof comesto a stop following a bounce-back reversal.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNINGS
Vehicle modifications involvingbraking system, aftermarket roofracks, suspension, steering system,tire construction and wheel and tire sizemay change the handling characteristicsof your vehicle and may adversely affectthe performance of the electronic stabilitycontrol system. In addition, installing anystereo loudspeakers may interfere withand adversely affect the electronic stabilitycontrol system. Install any aftermarketstereo loudspeaker as far as possible fromthe front center console, the tunnel, andthe front seats in order to minimize the riskof interfering with the electronic stabilitycontrol sensors. Reducing theeffectiveness of the electronic stabilitycontrol system could lead to an increasedrisk of loss of vehicle control, vehiclerollover, personal injury and death.
Remember that even advancedtechnology cannot defy the laws ofphysics. It’s always possible to losecontrol of a vehicle due to inappropriatedriver input for the conditions. Aggressivedriving on any road condition can causeyou to lose control of your vehicleincreasing the risk of personal injury orproperty damage. Activation of theelectronic stability control system is anindication that at least some of the tireshave exceeded their ability to grip the road;this could reduce the operator’s ability tocontrol the vehicle potentially resulting ina loss of vehicle control, vehicle rollover,personal injury and death. If your electronicstability control system activates, SLOWDOWN.
The system automatically turns on eachtime you switch the ignition on.
If a fault occurs in either the stabilitycontrol or the traction control system, youmay experience the following conditions:
•The stability and traction control lightilluminates steadily.
•The stability control and tractioncontrol systems do not enhance yourvehicle's ability to maintain traction ofthe wheels.
•The Adaptive Steering system (ifequipped) automatically changes thesteering function to a fixed steeringratio. See Steering (page 256).
If a driving condition activates either thestability control or the traction controlsystem you may experience the followingconditions:
•The stability and traction control lightflashes.
•Your vehicle slows down.
•Reduced engine power.
•A vibration in the brake pedal.
•The brake pedal is stiffer than usual.
•If the driving condition is severe andyour foot is not on the brake, the brakepedal may move as the system applieshigher brake force.
The stability control system has severalfeatures built into it to help you maintaincontrol of your vehicle:
Electronic Stability Control
The system enhances your vehicle’s abilityto prevent skids or lateral slides byapplying brakes to one or more of thewheels individually and, if necessary,reducing engine power.
