4. When the transmission selectorindicator is still flashing, release theoverride switch to shift from park (P)to neutral (N).
5.Your vehicle remains in Stay in Neutralmode for wrecker towing purposes orcan be shifted to the desired gear anddriven (if possible).

If Your Vehicle Gets Stuck In Mudor Snow
Note:Do not rock the vehicle if the engineis not at normal operating temperature ordamage to the transmission may occur.
Note:Do not rock the vehicle for more thana minute or damage to the transmission andtires may occur, or the engine may overheat.
If your vehicle gets stuck in mud or snow,it may be rocked out by shifting betweenforward and reverse gears, stoppingbetween shifts in a steady pattern. Presslightly on the accelerator in each gear.

Transmission

GENERAL INFORMATION
Note: Occasional brake noise is normal. Ifa metal-to-metal, continuous grinding orcontinuous squeal sound is present, thebrake linings may be worn-out and anauthorized dealer should check them. If thevehicle has continuous vibration or shudderin the steering wheel while braking, anauthorized dealer should check your vehicle.
Note:Brake dust may accumulate on thewheels, even under normal drivingconditions. Some dust is inevitable as thebrakes wear and does not contribute tobrake noise. See Cleaning the Wheels(page 278).
See Warning Lamps andIndicators (page 92).
Wet brakes result in reduced brakingefficiency. Gently press the brake pedal afew times when driving from a car wash orstanding water to dry the brakes.
Brake Over Accelerator
In the event the accelerator pedalbecomes stuck or entrapped, apply steadyand firm pressure to the brake pedal toslow the vehicle and reduce engine power.If you experience this condition, apply thebrakes and bring your vehicle to a safestop. Switch the engine off, move thetransmission to park (P) and apply theparking brake. Inspect the acceleratorpedal and the area around it for any itemsor debris that may be obstructing itsmovement.If none are found and thecondition persists, have your vehicle towedto the nearest authorized dealer.
Emergency Brake Assist
Emergency brake assist detects when youbrake heavily by measuring the rate atwhich you press the brake pedal. Itprovides maximum braking efficiency aslong as you press the pedal. Emergencybrake assist can reduce stopping distancesin critical situations.
Anti-lock Brake System
This system helps you maintain steeringcontrol during emergency stops by keepingthe brakes from locking.
This lamp momentarilyilluminates when you switch theignition on. If the light does notilluminate during start up, remains on orflashes, the anti-lock braking system maybe disabled. Have the system checked byan authorized dealer. If the anti-lock brakesystem is disabled, normal braking is stilleffective.
If the brake warning lampilluminates with the parkingbrake released, have your brakesystem serviced immediately.
It also illuminates momentarily when youswitch the ignition on to confirm the lampis functional. If it does not illuminate whenyou switch the ignition on, or begins toflash at any time, have the system checkedby an authorized dealer.
HINTS ON DRIVING WITH
ANTI-LOCK BRAKES
The anti-lock braking system does noteliminate the risks when:
•You drive too closely to the vehicle infront of you.
•Your vehicle is hydroplaning.

•You take corners too fast.
•The road surface is poor.
Note: If the system activates, the brakepedal may pulse and may travel further.Maintain pressure on the brake pedal. Youmay also hear a noise from the system. Thisis normal.
ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE
The electric parking brake replaces theconventional handbrake. The operatingswitch is in the center console.
WARNINGS
Always set the parking brake andleave your vehicle with thetransmission in park (P).
If your vehicle has a manualtransmission, shift into first or reversegear. If your vehicle has an automatictransmission, shift into park (P).
Note:When you apply the electric parkingbrake in certain conditions, for example ona steep hill, the electric parking brake mayreapply the brakes within three to tenminutes.
Note:You may notice various noises whenyou apply and release the electric parkingbrake. This is normal and no cause forconcern.
Parking On a Hill (Vehicles With aManual Transmission)
If you park your vehicle facing uphill, movethe transmission to first gear (1) and turnthe steering wheel away from the curb. Ifyou park your vehicle facing downhill, movethe transmission to reverse (R) and turnthe steering wheel toward the curb.
Applying the Electric Parkingbrake
WARNINGS
The brake system warning lamp willflash when applying the electricparking brake. If the brake systemwarning lamp continues to flash therecould be a problem with your electricparking brake. Have your vehicle checkedas soon as possible.
Applying the electric parking brakewhile moving will result in theengagement of the anti-lock brakingsystem. Do not use the electric parkingbrake system when the vehicle is movingunless the normal brake system is unableto stop the vehicle.
With the exception of emergencyconditions (for example, the brakepedal is broken or is blocked), do notapply the electric parking brake while thevehicle is moving. On bends, or poor roadsurfaces or weather conditions, emergencybraking can cause the vehicle to skid outof control or off the road.
Note:The brake system warning lampilluminates for ten seconds if you switch theignition off after you apply the electricparking brake, or you apply the electricparking brake after you switch the ignitionoff.
Note:The electric parking brake will notautomatically apply. You must apply theelectric parking brake using the electricparking brake switch.

Pull the switch up to apply the electricparking brake.
The brake system warning lamp flashesfor about two seconds and thenilluminates to confirm that you haveapplied the electric parking brake. SeeInformation Displays (page 97).
If you apply the electric parking brake whenyour vehicle is moving, the brake systemwarning lamp illuminates and a warningchime sounds. See Information Displays(page 97).
If your vehicle speed is above 4 mph(6 km/h), the braking force is applied aslong as you pull the switch. Releasing orpressing the switch or pressing theaccelerator pedal stops the braking force.
Releasing the Electric ParkingBrake
You can release the electric parking brakeeither manually by pressing the switch orautomatically.
Manual release
WARNING
If the brake system warning lightremains illuminated or flashes formore than four seconds after youhave released the parking brake, therecould be a problem with your brakingsystem. Have your vehicle checked as soonas possible.
You can manually release the electricparking brake by:
1. Switching the ignition on.
2. Pressing the brake pedal.
3. Pressing the electric parking brakeswitch.
When the electric parking brake is released,the brake system warning lamp turns off.
Automatic release - drive away release
Your vehicle automatically releases theparking brake if all of the followingconditions exist:
•You close the driver door (automatictransmission only).
•You press the accelerator pedal andrelease the clutch pedal.
•There are no faults detected in theparking brake system.

Note:If the electric parking brake warninglamp stays illuminated, the electric parkingbrake will not automatically release. Youmust release the electric parking brake usingthe electric parking brake switch.
Note:On manual transmission vehicles,when you release the clutch pedal and pressthe accelerator pedal, the electric parkingbrake releases automatically.
Note:On manual transmission vehicles,you must fully press the clutch pedal beforethe drive away release feature operates.Drive as normal using the accelerator andclutch pedals and the electric parking brakewill be automatically released.
The brake system warning lamp will go offto confirm that the electric parking brakehas been released.
Note:The electric parking brake drive awayrelease makes starting on a hill easier. Thisfeature releases the parking brakeautomatically when the vehicle hassufficient drive force to move up the hill.
Driving with a Trailer
Depending on the slope and the weight ofthe trailer, your vehicle and trailer may rollbackwards slightly when you start on aslope.
To prevent this from happening, do thefollowing:
1. Pull the switch up and hold it in thisposition.
2. Drive your vehicle, then release theswitch when you notice that the enginehas developed sufficient driving force.
Battery With No Charge
WARNING
You will not be able to apply orrelease the electric parking brake ifthe battery is low or has no charge.
If the battery is low or has no charge, usejumper cables and a booster battery.
HILL START ASSIST
WARNINGS
The system does not replace theparking brake. When you leave yourvehicle, always apply the parkingbrake and shift the transmission into park(P) for automatic transmission or first gearfor manual transmission.
You must remain in your vehiclewhen the system turns on. At alltimes, you are responsible forcontrolling your vehicle, supervising thesystem and intervening, if required. Failureto take care may result in the loss ofcontrol of your vehicle, serious personalinjury or death.
The system will turn off if amalfunction is apparent or if you revthe engine excessively. Failure totake care may result in the loss of controlof your vehicle, serious personal injury ordeath.
The system makes it easier to pull awaywhen your vehicle is on a slope without theneed to use the parking brake.
When the system is active, your vehicle willremain stationary on the slope for two tothree seconds after you release the brakepedal. This allows you time to move yourfoot from the brake to the acceleratorpedal. The brakes release automaticallywhen the engine has sufficient torque toprevent your vehicle from rolling down thegrade. This is an advantage when pullingaway on a slope, for example from a carpark ramp, traffic lights or when reversinguphill into a parking space.
The system will activate automatically onany slope that will cause significant vehiclerollback.

Note:The system only functions when youbring your vehicle to a complete standstillwith the vehicle in an uphill gear.
Note:There is no warning lamp to indicatethe system is either on or off.
Using Hill Start Assist
1. Bring your vehicle to a completestandstill. Keep the brake pedalpressed.
2. If the sensors detect that your vehicleis on a slope, the system activatesautomatically.
3. When you remove your foot from thebrake pedal, your vehicle will remainon the slope without rolling away forabout two to three seconds. This holdtime automatically extends if you arein the process of driving off.
4. Drive off in the normal manner. Thebrakes release automatically.
Note:When you remove your foot from thebrake pedal and press the pedal again whenthe system is active, you will experiencesignificantly reduced brake pedal travel. Thisis normal.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
The traction control system helps avoiddrive wheel spin and loss of traction.
If your vehicle begins to slide, the systemapplies the brakes to individual wheelsand, when needed, reduces engine powerat the same time. If the wheels spin whenaccelerating on slippery or loose surfaces,the system reduces engine power in orderto increase traction.
USING TRACTION CONTROL
WARNING
The stability and traction controllight illuminates steadily if thesystem detects a failure. Make sureyou did not manually disable the tractioncontrol system using the informationdisplay controls or the switch. If thestability control and traction control lightis still illuminating steadily, have thesystem serviced by an authorized dealerimmediately. Operating your vehicle withthe traction control disabled could lead toan increased risk of loss of vehicle control,vehicle rollover, personal injury and death.
The system automatically turns on eachtime you switch the ignition on.
If your vehicle is stuck in mud or snow,switching traction control off may bebeneficial as this allows the wheels to spin.
Note:When you switch traction control off,stability control remains fully active.
Switching the System Off
When you switch the system off or on, amessage appears in the informationdisplay showing system status.
You can switch the system off by eitherusing the information display controls orthe switch.
Using the Information DisplayControls
You can switch this feature off or on in theinformation display. See GeneralInformation (page 97).
Using a Switch (If Equipped)
Use the traction control switch on theinstrument panel to switch the system offor on.
System Indicator Lights andMessages
The stability and traction controllight:
•Temporarily illuminates on enginestart-up.
•Flashes when a driving conditionactivates either of the systems.
•Illuminates if a problem occurs in eitherof the systems.
The stability and traction controloff light temporarily illuminateson engine start-up and stays onwhen you switch the traction controlsystem off.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNINGS
Vehicle modifications involvingbraking system, aftermarket roofracks, suspension, steering system,tire construction and wheel and tire sizemay change the handling characteristicsof your vehicle and may adversely affectthe performance of the electronic stabilitycontrol system. In addition, installing anystereo loudspeakers may interfere withand adversely affect the electronic stabilitycontrol system. Install any aftermarketstereo loudspeaker as far as possible fromthe front center console, the tunnel, andthe front seats in order to minimize the riskof interfering with the electronic stabilitycontrol sensors. Reducing theeffectiveness of the electronic stabilitycontrol system could lead to an increasedrisk of loss of vehicle control, vehiclerollover, personal injury and death.
Remember that even advancedtechnology cannot defy the laws ofphysics. It’s always possible to losecontrol of a vehicle due to inappropriatedriver input for the conditions. Aggressivedriving on any road condition can causeyou to lose control of your vehicleincreasing the risk of personal injury orproperty damage. Activation of theelectronic stability control system is anindication that at least some of the tireshave exceeded their ability to grip the road;this could reduce the operator’s ability tocontrol the vehicle potentially resulting ina loss of vehicle control, vehicle rollover,personal injury and death. If your electronicstability control system activates, SLOWDOWN.
The system automatically turns on eachtime you switch the ignition on.
If a fault occurs in either the stabilitycontrol or the traction control system, youmay experience the following conditions:
•The stability and traction control lightilluminates steadily.
•The stability control and tractioncontrol systems do not enhance yourvehicle's ability to maintain traction ofthe wheels.
If a driving condition activates either thestability control or the traction controlsystem you may experience the followingconditions:
•The stability and traction control lightflashes.
•Your vehicle slows down.
•Reduced engine power.
•A vibration in the brake pedal.
•The brake pedal is stiffer than usual.
•If the driving condition is severe andyour foot is not on the brake, the brakepedal may move as the system applieshigher brake force.
The stability control system has severalfeatures built into it to help you maintaincontrol of your vehicle:
Electronic Stability Control
The system enhances your vehicle’s abilityto prevent skids or lateral slides byapplying brakes to one or more of thewheels individually and, if necessary,reducing engine power.
Traction Control
The system enhances your vehicle’s abilityto maintain traction of the wheels bydetecting and controlling wheel spin. SeeUsing Traction Control (page 184).

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNINGS
To help avoid personal injury, alwaysuse caution when in reverse (R) andwhen using the sensing system.
The system may not detect objectswith surfaces that absorb reflection.Always drive with due care andattention. Failure to take care may resultin a crash.
Traffic control systems, inclementweather, air brakes, external motorsand fans may affect the correctoperation of the sensing system.This maycause reduced performance or false alerts.
The system may not detect small ormoving objects, particularly thoseclose to the ground.
Note:If your vehicle is equipped withMyKey™, the sensing system cannot beturned off when a MyKey™ is present. SeePrinciple of Operation (page 56).
Note:Keep the sensors, located on thebumper or fascia, free from snow, ice andlarge accumulations of dirt. If the sensorsare covered, the system’s accuracy can beaffected. Do not clean the sensors withsharp objects.
Note:If your vehicle sustains damage tothe bumper or fascia, leaving it misalignedor bent, the sensing zone may be alteredcausing inaccurate measurement ofobstacles or false alerts.
Note:Certain add-on devices installedaround the bumper or fascia may createfalse alerts. For example, large trailerhitches, bike or surfboard racks, license platebrackets, bumper covers or any other devicethat may block the normal detection zoneof the system. Remove the add-on deviceto prevent false alerts.
Note:When a trailer is connected to yourvehicle, the rear parking aid may detect thetrailer and therefore provide an alert. Disablethe rear parking aid when a trailer isconnected to prevent the alert.
The sensing system warns the driver ofobstacles within a certain range of yourvehicle. The system turns on automaticallywhenever you switch the ignition on.
The system can be switched off throughthe information display menu or from thepop-up message that appears once youshift the transmission into reverse (R). SeeGeneral Information (page 97).
If a fault is present in the system, a warningmessage appears in the informationdisplay. See Information Messages(page 106).
REAR PARKING AID (If Equipped)
The rear sensors are only active when thetransmission is in reverse (R). As yourvehicle moves closer to the obstacle, therate of the audible warning increases.When the obstacle is less than 12 in(30 cm) away, the warning soundscontinuously. If the system detects astationary or receding object farther than12 in (30 cm) from the corners of thebumper, the tone sounds for only threeseconds. Once the system detects anobject approaching, the warning soundsagain.
