STARTING A GASOLINE
ENGINE
When you start the engine, the idle speedincreases. This helps to warm up theengine. If the engine idle speed does notslow down automatically, have yourvehicle checked by an authorized dealer.
Note: You can crank the engine for a totalof 60 seconds without the engine startingbefore the starting system temporarilydisables. The 60 seconds does not have tobe all at once. For example, if you crank theengine three times for 20 seconds eachtime, without the engine starting, youreached the 60-second time limit. Amessage appears in the information displayalerting you that you exceeded the crankingtime. You cannot attempt to start theengine for at least 15 minutes. After 15minutes, you are limited to a 15-secondengine cranking time. You need to wait 60minutes before you can crank the engine for60 seconds again.
Before starting your vehicle, check thefollowing:
•Make sure all occupants have fastenedtheir seatbelts.
•Make sure the headlamps andelectrical accessories are off.
•Make sure the parking brake is on.
•Make sure the transmission is in park(P).
Starting Your Vehicle
Note: Do not touch the accelerator pedal.
Note:You must have your intelligent accesskey in your vehicle to shift the transmissionout of park (P).
Note:The green ready indicator illuminatesletting you know that the vehicle is readyfor driving. Since your vehicle is equippedwith a silent key start, the engine may notstart at the time of the vehicle start. SeeHybrid Vehicle Operation (page 146).
1. Fully depress the brake pedal.
2. Briefly press the push button ignitionswitch.
Failure to Start
The system does not function if:
•The key frequencies are jammed.
•The key battery has no charge.
If you are unable to start your vehicle, dothe following:
1. Remove the key blade from thetransmitter.
2. Remove the rubber covering (A) fromthe cup holder. With the buttons facingupward and the unlock button facingthe front of your vehicle, place the firstintelligent access key into the backupslot (B).
3. Press the push button ignition switch.
If you cannot start the engine after threeattempts, wait 10 seconds and follow thisprocedure:
1. Apply the parking brake.
2. Fully depress the brake pedal.

3. Shift into park (P).
4. Fully press the accelerator pedal.
5. Briefly press the push button ignitionswitch.
Fast Restart
The fast restart feature allows you torestart your vehicle within 20 seconds ofswitching it off, even if it does not detecta valid passive key.
Within 20 seconds of switching the engineoff, press the brake pedal and press thepush button ignition switch. After 20seconds, you can no longer start yourvehicle if it does not detect a valid passivekey.
Once your vehicle starts, it remains runninguntil you press the push button ignitionswitch, even if your vehicle does not detecta valid passive key. If you open and closea door while your vehicle is running, thesystem searches for a valid passive key.After 20 seconds, you can no longer startyour vehicle if it does not detect a validpassive key.
Automatic Engine Shutdown
This feature automatically shuts downyour vehicle if it has been idling for anextended period. The ignition also turns offto save battery power. Before your vehicleshuts down, a message appears in theinformation display showing a timercounting down. If you do not intervenewithin 30 seconds, your vehicle shutsdown. Another message appears in theinformation display to inform you that yourvehicle has shut down to save fuel. Startyour vehicle as normal.
Automatic Engine Shutdown Override
Note: You cannot permanently switch offthe automatic shutdown. When you switchit off temporarily, it turns on at the nextignition cycle.
You can stop the shutdown, or reset thetimer, at any point before the 30-secondcountdown has expired by doing any of thefollowing:
•Interacting with your vehicle, forexample pressing the brake oraccelerator pedal.
•You can temporarily switch off theshutdown any time the ignition is onusing the information display. SeeInformation Displays (page 94).
•During the countdown beforeshutdown, you are prompted to pressOK or RESET (depending on your typeof information display) to temporarilyswitch the feature off (for the currentignition cycle only).
Stopping the Engine When YourVehicle is Stationary
Note:The ignition, all electrical circuits andall warning lamps and indicators will beturned off.
Note:If your vehicle is left running for 30minutes without any interaction, itautomatically shuts down.
1. Apply the parking brake.
2. Shift into park (P).
3. Briefly press the push button ignitionswitch.
Stopping the Engine When YourVehicle is Moving
WARNING
Switching off the engine when thevehicle is still moving will result in aloss of brake and steering assistance.The steering will not lock, but higher effortwill be required. When the ignition isswitched off, some electrical circuits,including air bags, warning lamps andindicators may also be off. If the ignitionwas turned off accidentally, you can shiftinto neutral (N) and re-start the engine.

•Keep the tires properly inflated andonly use the recommended size.
•Aggressive driving increases theamount of energy required to moveyour vehicle. In general, you canachieve better fuel economy with mildto moderate acceleration anddeceleration. Moderate braking isparticularly important since it allowsyou to maximize the energy capturedby the regenerative braking system.
Additional Tips:
•Do not carry extra loads.
•Be mindful of adding externalaccessories that may increaseaerodynamic drag.
•Observe posted speed limits.
•Perform all scheduled maintenance.
•There is no need to wait for your engineto warm up. The vehicle is ready todrive immediately after starting.
EV+ Mode
Your vehicle will recognize your frequentdestinations and allow for more EV drivingas you approach them. For example, whennearing your home it should be easier tostay in electric mode. The EV indicator willdisplay EV+ when this mode is active. Youshould see this approximately 1/8 mile(200 meters) from a frequent destination.See Information Displays (page 94).
Note:Frequent destinations are learned byyour vehicle after two to four weeks of use.To add a destination immediately, performthe following process: cycle the ignition onfor 2 seconds, but do not start your vehicle,then off for 2 seconds. Repeat the process10 times. This location is now programmedfor EV+. You can clear these destinationswith a Driving History reset through theSettings menu.
Note:You can switch the EV+ feature onor off through the Driver Assist section ofthe Settings menu.
PLUG-IN HYBRID VEHICLE
OPERATION
Plug-in Power Mode and HybridMode
You must plug in your Energi vehicleregularly for optimal use of the highvoltage battery's extended rangecapability. Charging your vehicle addselectrical energy. This energy is used topropel the vehicle in plug-in power mode.
Estimated electric range is shown in bluenext to gasoline range at the bottom of theright information display. You can alsoconfigure MyView to include detailedvehicle range information. See Gauges(page 86).
The system maximizes the use ofelectric-only operation in plug-in powermode. System conditions may requireengine operation; however, the systemuses plug-in power whenever possible.
When your plug-in power is depleted, thepowertrain system will automaticallyswitch to hybrid mode. Hybrid mode usesboth the gasoline engine and electricmotor to power your vehicle and maximizefuel economy.
EV Modes
Your vehicle contains selectableEV modes through the EV buttonlocated on the center of theinstrument panel, below the climatecontrols.

These modes are available when yourvehicle can run under high voltage batterypower. With your vehicle in driving mode,you can change EV modes with each pressof the EV button. The current mode will bedisplayed in the left-hand instrumentcluster screen.
Auto EV
This mode provides anautomatic use of high voltagebattery power during the drive,staying in electric mode when possible andrunning the engine when needed. Thismode will be the only one available if theplug-in power has been depleted.
EV Now
This mode provides an electriconly driving experience. Theleft-hand information displaychanges to a screen displaying youraverage miles or kilometers per chargealong with EV specific tools and functions.
Your vehicle may accelerate more slowlyand the top speed may be lower in EV Nowmode than in Auto EV mode.
You can enable your engine at any time byusing one of the following methods:
1.Press the OK button on the left 5–waysteering wheel control while viewingthe miles or kilometers per chargescreen. Your vehicle will enable theengine as needed, and willautomatically return to EV Now aftereight seconds or when the engine is nolonger needed.
2.Press the accelerator pedal fully. A popup message will appear. Press OK onthe left-hand steering wheel button toactivate as needed. The message willdisappear if you release the acceleratorpedal.
3. Press the EV button. This will changethe mode to EV Later and permitengine operation.
Your vehicle may automatically enterEngine Enabled mode if system conditionsrequire it. A engine enabled message willdisplay if this occurs. This is normalfunction, and your vehicle will return to EVNow when possible.
Your vehicle may enter Enable Enginemode if the climate control is in a defrostmode and the outside temperature is cold.A engine enabled message will display ifthis occurs. If defrost is not needed, selecta different climate control mode to permitEV Now.
When you enable EV Now, a blue EV icondisplays in the left-hand informationdisplay. If your vehicle is in the EngineEnabled mode, the EV icon will be yellow.
EV Now will automatically exit when thePlug in power has been depleted.
EV Later
This mode saves most of thehigh voltage battery plug inpower for future use (forexample, your initial drive is at high speedson open roads, but later your drive will beat low speeds in an urban area whereplug-in power usage is most efficient).Your vehicle will run the engine as neededand keep most of the high voltage batteryplug in power for later use in Auto Mode orEV Now mode.
When you enable EV Later, a white EVLater icon appears on the left-handinformation display.
The EV Later mode will automatically resetto EV Auto mode when you power yourvehicle off. You may press the EV buttontwice during the next drive to return to EVLater mode, if desired.

ECO Cruise
Note:ECO Cruise is available as a separatefeature on Energi vehicles only. On nonplug-in vehicles it is included in EcoSelect.
This feature saves vehicle energy byrelaxing acceleration compared tostandard cruise control. For example, yourvehicle may temporarily lose speed whengoing uphill. When set to on, ECO appearsin the information display when cruisecontrol is on.
You can switch it on or off in through theinformation display. See GeneralInformation (page 94).
Settings
ECO CruiseDriver Assist
Low Engine Use
The low engine use mode is equipped onEnergi models only. The Low Engine Usemode maintains proper engine lubricationat sufficient temperature, and will activateautomatically when you drive your vehiclewith limited engine operation. When yourvehicle is in low engine use mode, yourvehicle will automatically run the engineas necessary.
Note:If your vehicle is in low engine usemode when you start your vehicle, amessage will appear in the informationdisplay. See Information Messages (page103).
If you select the EV Now mode while thevehicle is in the low engine use mode, EVNow mode will be suspended for as longas you are in low engine use mode. The lowengine use mode will resume the next timeyou start your vehicle and willautomatically stop when no longer needed.
Note:Cold temperatures will affect theengine warm up time and the low engineuse mode may operate more frequently.
Note:An oil change is not required but givesyou the option of not running a low engineuse cycle. Resetting the oil life monitoringsystem will suspend the low engine usemode.

ECOSELECT (If Equipped)
EcoSelect is a drive mode for non plug-invehicles designed to offer the best possiblefuel economy with tradeoffs in vehicleperformance and comfort.
To switch EcoSelect on, pressthe ECO button.
A graphic displays on your informationdisplay when EcoSelect is on.
Your vehicle will remember the lastselected mode whenever you start yourvehicle.
EcoSelect allows your vehicle to operatemore efficiently. You will notice:
•Less aggressive cooling.
•Softer acceleration.
•Increased deceleration when coasting.
•Changes in engine behavior.
•ECO cruise control activation.

FUEL QUALITY
Choosing the Right Fuel
We recommend regular unleaded gasolinewith a minimum pump (R+M)/2 octanerating of 87. Some fuel stations offer fuelsposted as regular unleaded gasoline withan octane rating below 87, particularly inhigh altitude areas. We do not recommendfuels with an octane rating below 87.
Do not use any fuel other than thoserecommended because they could lead toengine damage that may not be coveredby the vehicle Warranty.
Note:Use of any fuel other than thoserecommended can impair the emissioncontrol system and cause a loss of vehicleperformance.
Do not use:
•Diesel fuel.
•Fuels containing kerosene or paraffin.
•Fuel containing more than 15% ethanolor E85 fuel.
•Fuels containing methanol.
•Fuels containing metallic-basedadditives, including manganese-basedcompounds.
•Fuels containing the octane boosteradditive, methylcyclopentadienylmanganese tricarbonyl (MMT).
•Leaded fuel (using leaded fuel isprohibited by law).
The use of fuels with metallic compoundssuch as methylcyclopentadienylmanganese tricarbonyl (commonly knownas MMT), which is a manganese-basedfuel additive, will impair engineperformance and affect the emissioncontrol system.
Do not be concerned if the enginesometimes knocks lightly. However, if theengine knocks heavily while using fuel withthe recommended octane rating, contactan authorized dealer to prevent any enginedamage.
Fuel Freshness Mode (If Equipped)
This helps keep the fuel system functionaland the fuel fresh.
If you mainly use your vehicle in electricpower mode without refueling, the gasolinein the fuel tank may become stale due toaging. Stale gasoline can damage theengine and fuel system.
Your vehicle automatically switches to fuelfreshness mode if you do not refuel yourvehicle with fresh fuel within an 18-monthperiod. Fuel freshness mode protects yourvehicle from potential engine and fuelsystem damage caused by using stale fuel.
Note:If you do not add new fuel during an18-month period, fuel freshness mode willuse fuel until approximately 1.2 gal (4.5 L)of fuel remains in the fuel tank.
During fuel freshness mode:
•The information display will indicatefuel freshness mode is active.
•The vehicle will only run in hybrid mode.EV Now mode will not be available.
•Most of the plug-in power will bestored until fuel freshness mode iscompleted.
Note:EV Now mode resumes when lessthan 1.2 gal (4.5 L) of fuel remains in the fueltank.

You must complete the refueling processwithin 20 minutes. If 20 minutes elapses,you must press the button on the driverdoor again. Fuel pump nozzle automaticshut off may occur if you do not press thebutton on the driver door.
System Warnings
If the fuel filler door fails to open, aninformation message appears in theinformation display.
Description and ActionMessage
A warning message appearsin the information displaywhen the fuel system failsto depressurize or the fuelfiller door fails to open. Youmay have to use the fuelfiller door manual overridelever.
RefuelError SeeManual
If the information message appears, do thefollowing:
1. Check the fuel filler door for anythingthat may be obstructing its movement,for example ice or snow.
2. Remove any obstruction from the fuelfiller door.
3. Press the button on the driver door toopen the fuel filler door.
4. If the fuel filler door fails to open andthe information message remains inthe information display, use the fuelfiller door manual override lever.
Fuel Filler Door Manual OverrideLever
The manual override lever is in the luggagecompartment on the left-hand side.
Note:The transmission must be in park (P)or neutral (N).
When using the manual override lever dothe following:
1. Switch the ignition on.
2. Pull the manual override lever.
3. Switch the ignition off.
4. Complete the refueling process within20 minutes.
FUEL CONSUMPTION
Note:The amount of usable fuel in theempty reserve varies and should not berelied upon to increase driving range. Whenrefueling your vehicle after the fuel gaugeindicates empty, you might not be able torefuel the full amount of the advertisedcapacity of the fuel tank due to the emptyreserve still present in the tank.
Empty reserve is the amount of fuelremaining in the tank after the fuel gaugeindicates empty. Do not rely on this fuel fordriving. The usable capacity of the fueltank is the amount of fuel that can be putinto the tank after the gauge indicatesempty. The advertised capacity is the totalfuel tank size – it is the combined usablecapacity plus the empty reserve.
Filling the Tank
For consistent results when filling the fueltank:

Charge Port
The charge port is located between thefront left side door and front left wheelwell. There is an indentation located onthe charge port door. Press with yourthumb to open and close the door.
Note:Do not force the charge port dooropen or closed. Forcing the door open orclosed will damage the charge port.
The light ring located around the chargeport indicates the charge status of the highvoltage battery in your vehicle. Divided intofour quadrants, the charge port light ringdisplays the state of charge in 25 percentincrements.
There is a cord acknowledgment featurethat activates when you initiate a chargecycle. The four light quadrants willindividually flash clockwise starting withthe top right light and ending with the topleft, two full times, confirming the systemdetects the charging coupler.
Use the key fob to view the charge statusof your vehicle at any time by pressing theunlock button. The light ring will light upthe corresponding quadrant(s) so that thecurrent state of charge can be determined.If the charge is below 25 percent, the lightring will not light. Do not forget to press thelock button on your key fob to re-lock yourvehicle.
The light ring will also display the currentstate of charge when opening the doors.
Charging
Note:Your vehicle must be in park P tocharge.
To charge the high-voltage battery:
1. Put the vehicle in park P and powerdown the vehicle.
2. With your thumb, press in and releasethe indentation located on the chargeport door and the door will rotate open.
3. Plug the charging coupler into thecharge port receptacle on your vehicle.Make sure the button clicks confirmingthat you have completely engaged thecoupler.
4. Verify that the cord acknowledgmentfeature activates. This indicates thebeginning of a normal charge cycle.
5. If using a 240–volt charging station,follow the instructions on the chargestation to begin the charging process.

The light ring will display how far along thecharge is:
•When the top right quadrant is pulsing,the charge is between 0-25 percent.
•When the top right quadrant light is onand the bottom right quadrant ispulsing, the charge is between 25-50percent.
•When the lights on both right sidequadrants are on and the bottom leftquadrant is pulsing, the charge isbetween 50-75 percent.
•When the lights on the three quadrantsare on and the top left quadrant ispulsing, the charge is between 75-100percent.
•When all lights on the entire ring areon, the charge is complete.
Note:The light ring will turn off one minuteafter reaching a full charge.
Locking the Charging Coupler
Note:You will need a padlock or acombination lock with a shackle diameterof 0.2 in (5 mm) or less and the straightportion of the shackle of 1.0 in (25.4 mm)of length or more.
1. Insert the lock through the hole in thecharging coupler button.
2. Lock the padlock or combination lock.
Waiting to Charge
Note: See Charge Settings in the SYNC™ 3 section.
When you select Value Charge, chargingmay not begin upon plugging in. Yourvehicle may delay charging to takeadvantage of off-peak electricity rates.Your vehicle will optimize the chargeschedule to be complete by the next GOTime.
When waiting to charge (not activelycharging), the light ring will indicate thepresent state of charge of the high voltagebattery as follows:
•When the top right quadrant light is off,the charge is between 0–25 percent.
•When the top right quadrant light is on,and the bottom right quadrant is off,the charge is between 25–50 percent.
•When both right side quadrant lightsare on and the bottom left quadrant isoff, the charge is between 50–75percent.
•When three quadrant lights are on andthe top left quadrant is off, the chargeis between 75–100 percent.
•When all lights on the entire ring areon, the charge is 100 percent.
Note:When your vehicle is waiting tocharge, the light ring will turn off one minuteafter displaying the present state of charge.When your vehicle automatically beginscharging, the light ring will turn on anddisplay how far along the charge is per thesection above.
Note:If the system detects a vehiclecharging system fault at any point in acharge cycle, the entire light ring will flashcontinuously for one minute and then turnoff. If this happens, unplug the chargingcoupler and then plug it back into the chargeport receptacle. If the problem persists,contact an authorized dealer.

Reverse (R)
With the selector in reverse (R), yourvehicle moves backward. Always come toa complete stop before shifting into andout of reverse (R).
Neutral (N)
With the selector in neutral (N), yourvehicle can be started and is free to roll.Hold the brake pedal down while in thisposition.
Stay in Neutral Mode
Note:Always put your vehicle in Stay inNeutral mode when entering an automaticcar wash. Failure to do this could result invehicle damage not covered by warranty.
Stay in Neutral mode allows your vehicleto stay in neutral when you exit yourvehicle. Your vehicle must be stationary toenter this mode.
To enter Stay in Neutral mode:
•Move the transmission selector toneutral (N).
•A message will appear in yourinformation display screen promptingyou to press the low (L) button.
•Press the low (L) button again to enterStay in Neutral mode.
To exit Stay in Neutral mode, select a gearother than low (L).
A message will appear in your informationdisplay screen when your vehicle hasentered Stay in Neutral mode.
Drive (D)
Drive (D) is the normal driving position forthe best fuel economy.
Grade Assist
Press the grade assist button to activategrade assist. The grade assist lamp willappear in the instrument cluster. Press thebutton again to switch the system off.
Grade assist:
•Provides additional grade braking witha combination of engine motoring andhigh-voltage battery charging to helpmaintain vehicle speed whendescending a grade.
•As your vehicle determines the amountof engine motoring and high-voltagebattery charging, you may notice theengine speed increasing anddecreasing to help maintain yourvehicle speed when descending agrade.
•The grade assist lamp in the instrumentcluster is illuminated.
Low (L)
•Provides maximum engine braking.
•The transmission may be shifted intolow (L) at any vehicle speed.
•Is not intended for use under extendedor normal driving conditions and resultsin lower fuel economy.
