select Overdrive or Overdrive Off whenever you drive your
vehicle.

Use 1 (First) to provide maximum engine braking on steep
downgrades. Upshifts from First can be made by manually
shifting to 2 (Second) or
j(Overdrive). 1 (First) gear provides
only first gear operation. If you select First while driving at
higher speeds, the transaxle will shift to 2 (Second), and then
downshift to 1 (First) after the vehicle decelerates to the proper
speed.

Always come to a complete stop before you shift into P (Park).
This position locks the transaxle and prevents the front wheels
from turning. To securely latch the gearshift in the P (Park)
position, pull it toward you, push it completely

instrument panel.

The certification label is located on the pillar in the driver's
door opening.

Insert the jack handle into the jack and slide the tapered end
of the jack handle through the slot in the lug nut wrench.

b. Articulated Hex Handle Type

Remove the handle assembly from the jack retaining bracket.
Swing the hex socket end outward to an approximate right
angle position. Place the hex socket end on the hex nut of
the jack assembly. Turn the handle clockwise to raise the
vehicle off the ground.

Stowing the spare tire

To raise the tire to the stowed position, lay the tire on the
ground with the interior side facing up. Install the retainer
through the wheel center and slide the tire under the vehicle.
Fit the hex-shaped end of the wheel lug wrench over the hex
nut in the floor of the cargo area. Turn the wheel lug
wrench clockwise until the tire is raised to its original
position underneath the vehicle.

If your vehicle has 16" wheels, lift one end of the tire, route the
cable end through the center of the wheel and install the 16"
wheel retainer.

NOTE: The hex nut ratchets when the tire is raised to the
stowed position. It will not allow you to over-tighten.

Check for proper seating against the underbody supports

Never remove the radiator cap while the engine is running or
hot. If you must remove the radiator cap, follow these steps to
avoid personal injury that can be caused by escaping steam or
engine coolant.

Turn the engine off and let it cool before removing the
radiator cap. You should exercise care when removing the
cap, even from a cooled engine.

When the engine is cool, wrap a thick cloth around the cap

Step back while the pressure is released.

Check the freeze protection rating of the engine coolant at least
once a year, just before winter.

Add engine coolant only to the engine coolant recovery
reservoir Ð not to the radiator. If the coolant level is low, add
to the engine coolant recovery reservoir a 50/50 mixture of
water and the type of engine coolant that Ford specifies. If the
coolant recovery reservoir is empty, you should also check the
radiator to see if it is low. Check the coolant level again the
next few times you drive your vehicle.

Filling Your Fuel Tank

Turn the engine off. After opening the fuel door (located on
the driver side of the vehicle), remove the cap carefully and
slowly by turning it counterclockwise 1/4 turn until it stops.
Pull to remove the cap. A tether attaches the cap to the fuel
filler pipe.

The fuel system may be under pressure. If the fuel cap is
venting vapor or if you hear a hissing sound, wait until
it stops before completely removing the cap. Otherwise,
fuel may spray out and injure you or others.

Make sure that you pump unleaded fuel and put the nozzle
all the way inside the fuel filler pipe.

NOTE: To help reduce early nozzle shutoffs and fuel spillage,
park your vehicle so that the fuel filler door is not
downhill. Do not tilt or turn the nozzle upside down
when filling. Avoid excessively fast fuel dispensing
rates (over 10 gallons [38 liters] per minute).

clean it off immediately. The fuel may dull or soften
