Vehicle Damage Warnings
Also, in this book you will ®nd these notices:
Notice:These mean there is something that could
damage your vehicle.
A notice will tell you about something that can damage
your vehicle. Many times, this damage would not be
covered by your warranty, and it could be costly. But the
notice will tell you what to do to help avoid the
damage.
When you read other manuals, you might see CAUTION
and NOTICE warnings in different colors or in different
words.
You'll also see warning labels on your vehicle. They use
the same words, CAUTION or NOTICE.
Vehicle Symbols
Your vehicle has components and labels that use
symbols instead of text. Symbols, used on your vehicle,
are shown along with the text describing the operation
or information relating to a speci®c component, control,
message, gage or indicator.
If you need help ®guring out a speci®c name of a

Midgate
{CAUTION:
It can be dangerous to drive with the cargo
area covered and the tailgate and the midgate
open because carbon monoxide (CO) gas can
come into your vehicle. You can not see or
smell CO. It can cause unconsciousness and
even death. If you must drive with the tailgate
and midgate open or if electrical wiring or
other cable connections must pass through
the seal between the body and the midgate:
·Make sure all windows are shut.
·Turn the fan on your heating or cooling
system to its highest speed with the
setting on OUTSIDE AIR. That will force
outside air into your vehicle. See
Dual
Climate Control System on page 3-20.
·If you have air outlets on or under the
instrument panel, open them all the way.
See
Engine Exhaust on page 2-39.
Midgate
Your vehicle is equipped with a midgate and power
midgate glass. The midgate allows you to extend the
length of your vehicle's cargo area.
Lowering the Midgate
The midgate can be lowered to allow the cargo area of
your vehicle to extend into the cab. The midgate
cannot be lowered when the glass is up.
To lower the midgate, do the following:
1. Fold and tumble the rear seats. The front seats
might have to be moved forward slightly to allow
the rear seats to fold and tumble. See
Rear
Seat Operation on page 1-7for more information.
2.
C:Press this overhead console button to lower
the midgate glass with the key in the ignition.
The midgate can be lowered without the key in the
ignition if the midgate glass is already down.
3. Clip the second row seat belts into the retainers.
They are mounted on the pillars below where the
seat belt passes through the trim panel. This
prevents the seat belt from being tangled in the
midgate when opening or closing the midgate.

Engine Exhaust
{CAUTION:
Engine exhaust can kill. It contains the gas
carbon monoxide (CO), which you can not see
or smell. It can cause unconsciousness and
death.
You might have exhaust coming in if:
·Your exhaust system sounds strange or
different.
·Your vehicle gets rusty underneath.
·Your vehicle was damaged in a collision.
·Your vehicle was damaged when driving
over high points on the road or over road
debris.
·Repairs were not done correctly.
·Your vehicle or exhaust system had been
modi®ed improperly.
If you ever suspect exhaust is coming into your
vehicle:
·Drive it only with all the windows down to
blow out any CO; and
·Have your vehicle ®xed immediately.
Running Your Engine While You
Are Parked
It is better not to park with the engine running. But if
you ever have to, here are some things to know.
{CAUTION:
Idling the engine with the climate control
system off could allow dangerous exhaust into
your vehicle. See the earlier Caution under
Engine Exhaust on page 2-39.
Also, idling in a closed-in place can let deadly
carbon monoxide (CO) into your vehicle even if
the climate control fan is at the highest setting.
One place this can happen is a garage.
Exhaust Ð with CO Ð can come in easily.
NEVER park in a garage with the engine
running.
Another closed-in place can be a blizzard.

Storage Areas
Glove Box
To open your glove box, pull the handle on the front of
the glove box and lower the door.
Overhead Console
The overhead console includes sunglasses storage and
a HomeLinkžtransmitter.The midgate window (B), power roof (C) and rear
tailgate window (D) switches are located in the overhead
console. See
Midgate on page 2-12,Power Roof on
page 2-17andTailgate on page 2-13for more
information. The sunroof switch (A) (if equipped) is also
located in the overhead console.
Front Storage Area
If your vehicle has this console compartment, squeeze
the front lever while lifting the top to open it. You
can store cassettes and compact discs in the slots in
front of the compartment.
Your vehicle's console will be equipped with cupholders
located on the front and rear of the storage
compartment.
The console may also contain one or more of the
following components:

·Rear Climate Control
If your vehicle has the center armrest compartment, lift
the cover to expose the storage area which includes
slots for cassettes or compact discs.

Other Warning Devices
If you carry re¯ective triangles, you can set one up at
the side of the road about 300 feet (100 m) behind your
vehicle.
Horn
To sound the horn, press the horn symbols on the
steering wheel pad.

Climate Controls
Dual Climate Control System
With this system you can control the heating, cooling
and ventilation for your vehicle.
9(Fan):Turn the left knob clockwise or
counterclockwise to increase or decrease the fan speed.
If the knob is in off mode, outside air will still enter the
vehicle, and will be directed based on the position of the
mode knob. The temperature can still be adjusted
using the temperature knob.
Turn the right knob clockwise or counterclockwise to
direct the air¯ow inside of your vehicle.To change the current mode, select one of the following:
H(Vent):This mode directs air to the instrument
panel outlets.
)(Bi-Level):This mode directs about half of the air
to the instrument panel outlets; then directs most of
the remaining air to the ¯oor outlets. A little air is
directed toward the windshield and the side window
outlets. Cooler air is directed to the upper vents
and warmer air to the ¯oor outlets.
6(Floor):This mode directs most of the air to the
¯oor outlets with a little air directed to the windshield and
the side window outlets. The recirculation button
cannot be selected while in ¯oor mode.
h(Recirculation):Recirculation mode is used to
recirculate the air inside of your vehicle. When this
button is pressed, an indicator light in the button
will come on to let you know that it is active. Use this
mode to help prevent outside odors and/or dust
from entering your vehicle or to help cool the air inside
of your vehicle more quickly. The air conditioning
compressor will also come on when this mode is
activated. While in recirculation mode, the windows may
fog when the weather is cold and damp. To clear the
fog, select either the blend or defrost mode and increase
fan speed. Recirculation mode shuts off when the
engine is turned off.

Temperature Control
Driver's Side:The lever on the left side of the climate
control panel is used to raise or lower the temperature
on the driver's side of the vehicle. Slide the lever
up or down to adjust the temperature.
Passenger's Side:The lever on the right side of the
climate control panel is used to raise or lower the
temperature on the passenger's side of the vehicle.
Slide the lever up or down to adjust the temperature.
This lever also adjusts the temperature to the rear seat
outlets.
When the temperature outside is 0ÉF (-18ÉC) or lower,
use the engine coolant heater, if equipped, to provide
warmer air, faster to your vehicle.
#(Air Conditioning):Press this button to turn the
air-conditioning system on or off. When the button
is pressed, an indicator light will come on and the
system will begin to cool and dehumidify the air inside
of your vehicle. You may notice a slight change in
engine performance when the air conditioning
compressor shuts off and turns on again. This is
normal.
Defogging and Defrosting
Fog on the inside of windows is a result of high humidity
(moisture) condensing on the cool window glass. This
can be minimized if the climate control system is
used properly. There are two modes to choose from to
clear fog or frost from your windshield. Use the
defog mode to clear the windows of fog or moisture and
warm the passengers. Use the defrost mode to
remove fog or frost from the windshield more quickly.
Turn the right knob clockwise or counterclockwise
to select one of the following modes:
-(Defog):This mode directs the air to the ¯oor
outlets, windshield and side window outlets. The
recirculation button cannot be selected while in
defog mode.
1(Defrost):This mode directs most of the air to the
windshield and the side window outlets, with only a
little air directed to the ¯oor outlets. The air conditioning
compressor may run to dehumidify the air to prevent
window fogging. The recirculation button cannot
be selected while in defrost mode. Do not drive the
vehicle until all the windows are clear.

Operation Tips
·
Keep the hood and front air inlets free of ice, snow,
or any other obstruction (such as leaves). The
heater and defroster will work far better, reducing
the chance of fogging the inside of your windows.
·When you enter a vehicle in cold weather, turn the
fan knob all the way to the right for a few moments
before driving. This helps clear the intake ducts
of snow and moisture, and reduces the chance of
fogging the inside of your window.
·Keep the air path under the front seats clear of
objects. This helps air to circulate throughout
your vehicle.
·Adding outside equipment to the front of your
vehicle, such as hood-air de¯ectors, may affect the
performance of the heating and air conditioning
system. Check with your dealer before adding
equipment to the outside of your vehicle.
Dual Automatic Climate Control
System
Your vehicle may have the dual automatic climate
control system. With this system you can control the
heating, cooling and ventilation for your vehicle.
When your vehicle is ®rst started and the climate control
system is on, or if the climate control system has
been turned on, the display will show the driver's
temperature setting for ®ve seconds. Then it will show
the outside temperature.
OFF:Press this button to turn off the entire climate
control system. Outside air will still enter the vehicle, and
will be directed to the ¯oor. Press the AUTO button,
the mode button, the fan arrows, or either temperature
knob to turn the system on.
