1-6Head Restraints
Slide the head restraint up or down so that the top of the
restraint is closest to the top of your head. This position
reduces the chance of a neck injury in a crash.
The head restraints tilt forward and rearward also. To adjust the tilt for either of the front head restraints,
pull it toward you until you hear a click. There are four
positions available: initial position, first click, second
click and third click. Each position will click into place.
After the third position (three clicks) is reached, pulling
the head restraint farther will release it back to the
upright position.
Pull firmly on the top of the head restraint to position it
to your liking.
The rear seat head restraints in your vehicle are
adjustable. Slide an adjustable head restraint up or down
so that the top of the restraint is closest to the top of
your head. This position reduces the chance of a neck
injury in a crash.
On some models, the head restraints tilt forward and
rearward also.
Rear Seats
60/40 Split Bench Seat (Second Row) If your vehicle has a 60/40 split bench, the seatbacks can
be reclined (Yukon Denali only) and the seats can be
folded to give you more cargo space.
The Yukon XL Denali 60/40 seats do not recline.

1-67Once you have the top strap anchored, you'll be ready to
secure the child restraint itself. Tighten the top strap
when and as the child restraint manufacturer's
instructions say.
Yukon XL Denali models: A child restraint with a top
strap should only be used in the second or third row.
Don't use a child restraint with a top strap in the front
seat because there's no place to anchor the top strap.

An anchor loop bracket for a top strap is located at the
bottom rear of the seat cushion for each seating position
in the second row, and for the center seating position in
the third row.

1-68 Yukon Denali models: A child restraint with a top strap
should only be used in the second row. Don't use a child
restraint with a top strap in the right front passenger's
position or in the third row, because there's no place to
anchor the top strap.
An anchor loop bracket for a top strap is located at the
bottom rear of the seat cushion for each seating position
in the second row.
Yukon Denali Second Row Seat Lower Anchorages and Top Tethers for
Children (LATCH System) Your vehicle has the LATCH system. You'll find
anchors (A) in the outboard positions for the second row
seats where the seatback meets the seat cushion.
To assist you in locating the lower anchors for this child
restraint system, each seating position with the LATCH
system will have a visible metal anchorage point.

2-3Power Windows
The switches to operate all of the power windows are
located on the driver's door armrest. The front
passenger's door and the rear side doors also each
have an individual power window switch. Your power windows will work when the ignition has
been turned to ACCESSORY or RUN or when Retained
Accessory Power (RAP) is active. See ªRetained
Accessory Powerº in the Index.
Press the rear or front of the switch with the power
window symbol on it to lower or raise the window.
Driver's Express
- Down Window
The driver's window has an express down feature that
allows the window to be lowered without holding the
switch. Press and hold the rear of the power window
switch for one second to activate the express down
mode. The express down mode can be canceled at any
time by pressing the opposite side of the switch. To open
the window partway, lightly tap the power window
switch until the window is at the desired position.
Window Lockout Switch
The driver's door power window switch has a lockout
feature. This feature prevents the passenger's windows
from operating except from the driver's position when
the driver's door button labeled WINDOW LOCK
is engaged.

2-23Tow/Haul Mode
Your vehicle is equipped with a tow/haul mode.
The button is located on the end of the column shift
lever. You can use this feature to assist when towing or
hauling a heavy load. See ªTow/Haul Modeº in the
Index for more information.
The tow/haul mode also interacts with the Autoride

feature to enhance the ride when trailering or with a
loaded vehicle. See ªAutoride
º in the Index. Parking Brake To set the parking brake, hold the regular brake pedal
down with your right foot. Push down the parking brake
pedal with your left foot.
If the ignition is on, the brake system warning light
will flash. A chime will activate when the parking
brake is applied and the vehicle is moving at least
3 mph (5 km/h) for at least three seconds.
To release the parking brake, hold the regular brake
pedal down. Pull the bottom edge of the lever, located
above the parking brake pedal, marked BRAKE
RELEASE, to release the parking brake.

2-38Automatic Headlamp System When it is dark enough outside, your automatic
headlamp system will turn on your headlamps at the
normal brightness along with other lamps such as the
taillamps, sidemarker, parking lamps and the instrument
panel lights. The radio lights will also dim.
Your vehicle is equipped with a headlamp off delay,
which will keep the headlamps on for a short time after
the ignition is turned to OFF. For more information see
ªSecondary Information Center (SIC)º in the Index.
Your vehicle has a light sensor located on the top of the
instrument panel in the defroster grille. Be sure it is not
covered, or the system will be on whenever the ignition
is on.
The system may also turn on your headlamps when
driving through a parking garage, heavy overcast
weather or a tunnel. This is normal.
There is a delay in the transition between the daytime
and nighttime operation of the Daytime Running Lamps
(DRL) and the automatic headlamp systems so that
driving under bridges or bright overhead street lights does
not affect the system. The DRL and automatic headlamp
system will only be affected when the light sensor sees
a change in lighting lasting longer than the delay. To idle your vehicle with the automatic headlamp
system off, set the parking brake while the ignition is
off. Then start your vehicle. The automatic headlamp
system will stay off until you release the parking brake.
As with any vehicle, you should turn on the regular
headlamps when you need them.
You may be able to turn off your automatic headlamp
system. See ªDaytime Running Lamps (DRL)º later in
this section for more information.
Lamps On Reminder A reminder chime will sound when your headlamps or
parking lamps are manually turned on and your ignition
is in OFF, LOCK or ACCESSORY. To disable the
chime, turn the thumbwheel all the way down. In the
automatic mode, the headlamps turn off once the
ignition key is in OFF.

2-40 This procedure applies only to vehicles first sold in the
United States.
When necessary, you may turn off the automatic
headlamp system and the Daytime Running Lamps
(DRL) feature by following these steps:
1. Turn the ignition to RUN.
2. Press the DOME OVERRIDE button four times
within six seconds. After the fourth press of the
button, a chime will sound informing you the system
is off.
3. The system will revert back to the automatic mode
when the DOME OVERRIDE button is again pushed
four times within six seconds (a chime will sound),
or when the ignition is turned off and on again.
When the system is turned off, the headlamps will not
automatically come on when it becomes dark outside.
As with any vehicle, you should turn on the regular
headlamp system when you need it.
Fog Lamps
Use the fog lamps for better vision in foggy or misty
conditions. Your parking lamps and/or low
- beam
headlamps must be on for your fog lamps to work. The fog lamp button is
located on the left side of
the instrument panel.
Press the button to turn the fog lamps on while the
headlamps are on. Press the button again to turn them
off. An indicator light will glow near the button when
the fog lamps are on.
Remember, fog lamps alone will not give off as much
light as your headlamps. Never use your fog lamps in
the dark without turning on your headlamps.
The fog lamps will go off whenever your high
- beam
headlamps come on. When the high beams go off, the
fog lamps will come on again.
The fog lamps will be cancelled after the ignition is
turned off. If you still want to use the fog lamps after
you restart the vehicle, you will need to press the fog
lamp button again.

2-59Programming the HomeLink Transmitter Do not use the HomeLink Transmitter with any garage
door opener that does not have the stop and reverse
feature. This includes any garage door opener model
manufactured before April 1, 1982.
Be sure that people and objects are clear of the garage
door you are programming.
It is recommended that a new battery be installed in
your hand
- held transmitter for quicker and more
accurate transmission of the radio frequency.
Your vehicle's engine should be turned off while
programming the transmitter. Follow these steps to
program up to three channels:
1. Decide which one of the three channels (one of the
HomeLink buttons) you want to program.
2. Press and hold the desired button on HomeLink
through Step 3. 3. When the HomeLink indicator light begins to blink
slowly (this may take up to 30 seconds), hold the
hand
- held transmitter about 1 to 3 inches (3 to 8 cm)
away from HomeLink and then press and hold the
transmit button on the hand
- held transmitter.
Continue to hold both buttons until the indicator
light on HomeLink begins to flash rapidly (this may
take up to 90 seconds).
If you have trouble programming HomeLink, make
sure that you have followed the directions exactly as
described and that the battery in the hand
- held
transmitter is not weak. If you still cannot program it,
move the hand
- held transmitter to the left or right or
forward or backward or flip it upside down. HomeLink
may not work with older garage door openers that do
not meet current Federal Consumer Safety Standards.
If you cannot program the transmitter after repeated
attempts, refer to ªTraining a Garage Door Opener with
Rolling Codesº later in this section or contact the
manufacturer of HomeLink at 1

Be sure to keep the original hand
- held transmitter in
case you need to erase and reprogram HomeLink.

2-60Training a Garage Door Opener with a
ªRolling Codeº Feature (If Equipped) If you have not previously programmed the hand
- held
transmitter to HomeLink, see ªProgramming the
HomeLink Transmitterº listed previously. If you have
completed this programming already, you now need to
train the garage door opener motor head unit to
recognize HomeLink.
1. Find the ªLearnº or ªSmartbuttonº on the garage
door opener motor head unit. The exact location and
color will vary by garage door opener brand. If you
have difficulty finding the Learn or Smart button,
refer to your garage door opener owner's manual or
contact the manufacturer of HomeLink at

www.homelink.com.
Because of the steps involved, it may be helpful
to have another person assist in programming
the transmitter. 2. Press the Learn or Smart button on the garage
door opener motor head unit. An indicator light will
begin to flash when the motor head unit enters the
training mode.
Following this step, you have 30 seconds to
start Step 3.
3. Return to HomeLink in your vehicle and firmly
press and release the programmed HomeLink button
three times.
The rolling
- code garage door opener should now
recognize HomeLink. You may either use HomeLink
or the hand
- held transmitter to open the garage door.

problems training the garage door opener, contact the

2-78Trans Fluid Hot Your vehicle has a transmission temperature warning
display contained in the message center.
If the transmission fluid
temperature becomes high,
the message center will
display this message.
When the transmission enters the protection mode,
you may notice a change in the transmission shifting
patterns. When the transmission fluid temperature
returns to normal, the display will turn off and the
transmission shifting patterns will return to normal.
NOTICE: If you keep driving your vehicle with the
transmission TRANS FLUID HOT message
displayed, you can damage the transmission.
This could lead to costly repairs that may not be
covered under your warranty. The following situations can cause the transmission to
operate at higher temperatures:

Towing a trailer

Hot outside air temperatures

Hauling a large or heavy load

Low transmission fluid level

High transmission fluid level

Restricted air flow to the radiator and the auxiliary
transmission oil cooler (if equipped).
A temporary solution to hotter transmission operating
temperatures may be to let the transmission cool down.
