Disassembly
lnboard Joint Side:
1. Carefully clamp the driveshaft in a vise with soft
jaws, then remove the set ring from the inboard
joint.
2. Remove the boot bands. Take care not to damage
the boot.
. lf the boot band is a locking tab type, pry up the
locking tabs with a screwdriver, and raise the
end of the band.
. It the boot band is a welded type, cut the boot
ba nd.
. lf the boot band is a crimping type, pry up the
end of the band with a screwdraver.
. lf the boot band is a double loop type, lift up the
band bend.

Mark each roller and inboard joint to identify the
locations of rollers and grooves in the inboard joint.
Then remove the inboard joint on the shop towel.
Be careful not to drop the rollers when separating
them from the inboard ioint.

4. Mark the rollers and spider to identify the locations
of the rollers on the sDider, then remove the rollers.

STOP RING(Applicable to '96 - 98 modols andErazil-produced driveshafts)
Remove the circlip.
Mark the spider and driveshaft to identify the posi-
tion ot the spider on the shaft.
Remove the spider using a bearing remover.
Remove the stop ring (Applicable to '96 - 98 models
and Brazil-produced driveshafts).
Wrap the splines on the drivsshaft with vinyl tape to
prevent damage to the boot and dynamic damper.

Remove the inboard
dynamic damper.

1. Lift up thc three tabs with a screwdriver, then
remove the boot bands, Take care not to damage
the boot.
NOTE:
. lf the boot band is a double loop type, lift up the
band bend.
. lf the boot band is a welded type, cut the boot
band.
. lfthe boot band is a locking tabs type, pry up the
tabs with a scr€wdriv€r and lift uo the snd of the
band.
2. Slide the outboard boot to the inboard ioint side.

4. lnsert the driveshaft into the outboard joint until the
stop ring is close on the ioint.
DRIVESHAFT
To completely seat the outboard joint, pick up the
driveshaft and joint, and drop them from about 10
cm (4 to 5 inches) onto a hard surface. Do not use a
hammer as excessive force may damage the drive-
shaft.

6. Check the alignment of the paint mark with the out-
board joint end.
Pack the outboard joint with the joint grease includsd
in th€ new ioint boot set.

3. lnsert the inboard end of the driveshaft into the dif-
terential or intermediate shaft until the set ring
locks in the groove
NOTE: Clean the areas where the driveshaft contact
the transmission (differential) thoroughly with solvent
or carburetor cleaner, and dry with compressed air'

lnstall the knuckie on the lower arm. then trghten
the castle nut and install a new cotter pin
NOTE: wipe off the grease before tightening the
nut at the ball ioint.
CAUTION:
. Be careful not to damago the ball ioint boot'
. Torque the castle nut to the lower torque sp€ci-
fication, thsn tighten it only far enough to align
the slot with th€ pin hol6. Do not align the nut
by loosening.

5. lnstall the damper tork over the driveshaft and onto
the lower arm. Install the damper in the damper
fork so the aligning tab is aligned with the slot in
the damPer fork.

Replace.
Loosely install the flange bolts and the new self-
locking nut.
Apply oil to the seating surface of the new spindle
nut.

NOTE: Aftortightening, use a drift to
stake the spindle nut shoulder against the drivoshaft'
8. Install a new spindle nut, then tighten the nut'
9. Clean the mating surfaces ot the brake disc and the
wheel. then install the front wheel with the wheel
nuts.
10. Tighten the flange bolts and the new self-locking
nut with the vehicle's weight on the damper.
11. Refill the transmission with recommended fluid (see
section 13 or 14).'t2. Check the front wheel alignment and adjust if nec-
essary (see section 18),

Inspection and Adjustment
Steering Operation
Steering Wheel Rotational Play
Place the front wheels in a straight ahead position andmeasure the distance the steering wheel can be turnedwithout moving the front wheels.
ROTATIONAL PLAY: 0 - 10 mm (0 - 0.4 in)
lf the play exceeds the service limit, perform rack guide
adjustment (see page lT-5).
lf the play is still excessive after rack guide adjustment,inspect the steering linkage and gearbox as descrjbed

Rack Guide Adjustment
NOTE: Perform the rack guide adjustment with the
wheels in the straight ahead position.
1. Loosen the rack guide screw locknut with the spe-
cial tool, then loosen the rack guide screw.
LOCKNUT WRENCH, 40 mm07916 - SA5000r
Tighten the rack guide screw until it compresses the
spring and seats against the rack guide, then loosen
rt.
Retighten the rack guide screw to 4 N'm (0.4 kgf m,
2.9 lbf.ft), then back it off to specified angle.
Specilied Return Angle: 30' max.
Tighten the locknut while holding the rack guide
Check for tight or loose steering through the com-
plete turning travel.
Recheck steering effort (see page 17-4).

Removal
NOTE: Using solvent and a brush, to wash any oil and
dirt off the gearbox. Blow dry with compressed air.
1. Raise the front of vehicle, and support it on satety
stands in the proper locations (see section I ).
2. Remove the front wheels.
3. Remove the steering wheel (see page 17-35).
4. Remove the steering loint cover
Remove the steering joint lower bolt, and discon-
nect the steering joint by moving the joint toward
the column.

Remove the cotter pin from the castle nut ('96 - '97
models) or nut ('98 - '00 models) and remove the nut.
Installthe 10 mm hex nut on the ball joint.
Be sure that the 10 mm hex nut is flush with the balljoint pin end, or the threaded section of the ball joint
pin might be damaged by the balljoint remover.
NOTE: Remove the ball joint using the special tool,
Refer to section 18 for how to use tho ball joint
remover.
Separate the tie-rod ball joint and knuckle using the
specialtool.
CAUTION: Avoid damaging the ball ioint boot.
Remove the left tie-rod end, then slide the rack all
the way to the right.
Separate the exhaust pipe A or TWC (see section g).
Disconnect the shift linkage (see section 13 or sec-
tion 14).
Remove the stiffener plate.

13. Remove the mounting bracket,
Pull the steering gearbox all the way down to clear
th€ pinion shaft from the bulkhead, then remove thepinion shaft grommet,
Move the steering gearbox to right so the left rack
end clears the rear beam, then tilt the left side down
to remove it from the car.

Reassembly
NOTE:
. Clean the disassembled parts with solvent, and dry them with compressed air. Do not dip the rubber parts in solvent.
. Alwavs replace the non reuseable parts with new ones before assembly
. Do not allow dust, dirt, or other foreign materials to enter the steering gearbox.
