IRack Guide Adjustment
NOTE: Perform rack guide adjustment with the wheels
in the straight ahead Position.
1. Loosen the rack guide screw locknut with the
cialtool.
'96 - '97 models:
Loosen the rack guide screw
'98 - '00 models:
Remove the rack guide screw and remove the old
sealant off of the threaded section.
Apply new sealant all around the threads. Loosely
installthe rack guide screw
Tighten the rack guide screw to 25 N'm (2.5 kgf'm.
18 lbf.ft), then loosen it.
Retighten the rack guide screw to 3 9 N'm (0.4 kgim,
2.9 lbf.ft), then back it off to specified angle.
Specified Return Angle: 20" max.
Tighten the locknut while holding the rack guide
screw.
Check for tight or loose steering through the com-
plete turning travel.
Perform following insPections:
. Steering operation (see page 17-30).
. Power assist with vehicle parked.

Fluid Replacement
Check the reservoir at regular intervals, and add fluid as
necessary.
CAUTION: Always us€ Genuine Honda Power Stearing
Fluid-V or S. Using any other type of power sto€ring
tluid or automatic transmission lluid can cause
increased wear and poor steering in cold weathor.

RESERVOIR CAPACITY:
0.4 liter (0.42 US. qt, 0.35 lmP.qt)

LOWER LEVEL LINE
1. Raise the reservoir, then disconnect the return nose.
2. Connect a hose of suitable diameter to the discon-
nected return hose, and put the hose end in a suit-
able container.
CAUTION: Take care not to spill tho fluid on the
body and parts. Wipe off any spill€d fluid at oncs'
3. Start the engine, let it run at idle, and turn the steer-
ing wheel from lock-to-lock several times When
fluid stops running out of the hose, shut off the
engine, Discard the fluid.
4. Reinstall the return hose on the reservoir'
5. Fill the reservoir to the upper level line.
6. Start the engine and run it at fast idle, then turn the
steering trom lock-to-lock several times to bleed air
trom the system.
7. Recheck the fluid level and add some it necessary.
CAUTION: Do not fill the reservoir beYond the
upper l€vel line.

12, Install the steering joint cover with the clamps and a
clrp.
Reconnect the tie-rod ends to the steering knuckles,
tighten the castle nut ('96 -'97 models) or nut ('98 -
'OO models) to the specified torque, and install new
cotter plns.
NOTE: Before connecting the tie-rod ends, wipe off
any grease contamination from the ball joint tapered
section and threads.
CAUTION: Torquo the castle nut to the lower torque
sp€cification, then tighten it only tar enough to align
the slot with the pin hole. Do not align the nut by
loosening {,96 -'97 models only).

Install the exhaust pipe A or TWC (see section 9).
Connect the shift linkage (see section 13 or section
14).
lnstall the front wheels
Fill the system with power steering fluid, and bleed
air from the system (see page 17-331
After installation, perform the following checks
. Start the engine, allow it to idle, and turn the
steering wheel from lock-tolock several times to
warm up the fluid. Check the gearbox for leaks
(see page 17-39).
. Adjust the front toe (see section 18).
. Check the steering wheel spoke angle. Adjust by
turning the right and left tie-rods, if necessary.
NOTE: Turn the right and left tie-rods equallv

Ball joint Boot Replacement
'96 - '97 models:
1. Remove the boot set ring and the boot.
CAUTION: Do not contaminate the boot installa.tion section with grsase.
2. Pack the interior of the boot and lip with grease.
3. Wipe the grease off the sliding surface of the ballpin, then pack the lower area with fresh grease.
CAUTION:
. Keep grease off the boot installation seciion andthe tapered s€ction ot the ball pin.
. Do not allow dust, dirt, or oth6r foreign materi-
als to 6nt8r the boot.
LIPEALL PIN TAPEREDSECTIONWipe off the grease.
INSTALLATION
SECTIONWipe off the grease.
Install the boot in the groove of the boot installation
section securely, then bleed the air from the boot.

1. Remove the boot from the tie-rod end, and wiDe theold grease off the ball pin.
2. Pack the lower area ofthe ball pin with fresh grease.
3. Pack the interior of the new boot and liD with freshgrease.
CAUTION:

1.Remove the set ring and the boot.

the tapeled section of the ball pin.

als to enter the boot.
Install the boot into the groove of the boot installa-
tion section securely, then bleed the atr.
Install the upper and lower ball joint boot set rings
using the special tools as follows:
Lower ball joint: Adiust the special tool with the
adjusting bolt until the end of the tool aligns with
the groove on the boot. Slide the set ring over the
tool and into Position.

Removal
l. Remove the front wheels (see page 18-11).
2, Remove the damper pinch bolt trom the top of
damper fork.

Bleeding
CAUTION:
. Always use Genuine Honda DOT 3 Brake Fluid. Using 8
non-Honda brak€ fluid can cause corrosion and
docrea3e the life of the system.
. Make surs ||o dirt or other foteign matter is allowed
to contaminate the brake fluid,
. Do not spill brake lluid on the vehicle, it may damago
the paint; if brake lluid doos contac{ the paint, wash
it ofl imm€diately with water.
NOTE: The reservoir on the master cylinder must be at
the MAX (upper) level mark at the start of the bleeding
procedure and checked after bleeding each brake
caliper. Add fluid as required.
1. Make sure the brake fluid level in the reservoir is at
the MAX lupper) level line.
MAX {UPPER) LEVEL
CYLINDER
Have someone slowly pump the brake pedsl several
times, then apply steady Pressure.
Loosen the brake bleed screw to allow air to escape
from the system. Then tighten the bleed screw
securely.
Repeat the procedure for each wheel in the sequence
shown below until air bubbles no longer appear in
the fluid.
Refill the master cylinder reservoir to the MAX (up-
per) level line.

NOTE: For 2056 type reassembly procedures, see page 19-18.
o Never use an air hose or dry brush to clean brako assemblies.. Use an OSHA approved vacuum cleanerto avoid breathing brake dust.. Contaminated brake discs or pads reduce stopping abilhy.. when reusing the pads, always reinstall the brake pads in their original positions to pr€vent loss of braking €fficiency.
CAUTION:
. Do not spill brake fluid on the vehicle; it may damage the paint; if brake fluid do€s contaci the psint, wash it oft imme"diately with water.
. Clean all parts in brake fluid and air dry; blow out all passag€s whh comp.€ssed air.. Betore reassembling, check that all parts are free ol dust and othor toreign particlos.
. Replace parts wilh new ones whenever specified to do so.. Make sure no dirt or other toreign matt€r is allowed to contaminate the brake fluid.. Always use Genuine Honda DOT 3 Brake Fluid. Using a non.Honda brake tluid can cause corrosion and decresse thelife of th€ system.
NOTE:
. Coat the piston, piston seal, and caliper bore with clean brake fluid.. Replace all rubber parts with new ones whenever disassembled.

'1.Clean the piston and caliper bore with brake fluid,
and inspect for wear and damage.
Coat the new piston seal with the recommended
rubber grease in the caliper seal set. and install the
seal in the cylinder groove.
Apply the recommended seal grease in the caliper
seal set to the sealing lips and inside of a new pis-
ton boot, and securely install it in the caliper with the
new boot clip.
CAUTION: Be careful nol to damage the caliper
cylinder wall.
PISTON SEALReplace.

Lubricate the caliper and piston with brake fluid,
then install the piston in the cylinder with the dished
end facing in.

Apply the recommended seal grease in the caliper
seal set to the sliding surface of the pins and the
lnside of the new pin boots.
lnstall the pin boots into the grooves in the caliper

7. Insert pin A and pin B into the caliper bracket.
8. Install the pin boots into the grooves in the pans
propeny.
9. Install the brake pads in their original positions (see
page 19-9).
10. Push in the piston so that the caliper will fit over the
pads, and install the caliPer.
11. Tighten the caliper bolts.
12. Connect the brake hose to the caliper with new seal-
ing washers, and tighten the banjo bolt.

7.Apply the recommended seal grease in the caliperseal set to the sliding surface of sleeve A and theinside of a new guide pin boot.
Install the guide pin boot into the groove in thesleeve A.
Make sure that the brake pad retainers and brakepads are in their original positions (see page 19-10).
Install the caliper onto sleeve A, and pivot it downinto position.
NOTE: Install the guide pin boot into the groove inthe caliper properly.

11.Connect the brake hose to the caliper with new seal-ing washers, and tighten the banjo bolt.
Tighten the caliper bolt B.
Fill the brake reservoir and bleed the brake svstem(see page 19-7).
Perform the following checks.. Check for leaks at hose and line ioints and con-nectaons, and retighten if necessary.. Check for brake hoses for interference and twist-Ing.
