To assure that you receive the greatest number
of kilometers of satisfying operation from your Hyundai, certain maintenance procedures must
be performed. Although careful design and en-
gineering have reduced these to a minimum, those that are required are of the utmost impor-tance. It is your responsibility to have these mainte-
nance procedures performed to comply with theterms of the warranties covering your newHyundai. The Service Passport supplied withyour new vehicle provides further information
about these warranties. F010B01A-AAT

The maintenance required for your Hyundai
can be divided into three main areas:
o Specified scheduled procedures
o General everyday checks
o Do-it-yourself maintenance F010C01A-GAT

Specified Scheduled Procedures
Specified Scheduled Procedures
These are the procedures such as inspections,
adjustments and replacements that are listed in the maintenance charts starting on page 5-2.These procedures must be performed at theintervals shown in the maintenance schedule to
assure that your warranty remains in effect.Although it is strongly recommended that they
be performed by the factory-trained or distribu-tor-trained technicians at your Hyundai dealer,
these procedures may be performed at any
qualified service facility.
It is suggested that genuine Hyundai service
parts be used for any required repairs or re-placements. Other parts of equivalent quality
such as engine oil, engine coolant, manual orauto transaxle oil, brake fluid and so on which
are not supplied by Hyundai Motor Company or
its distributor may be used without affectingyour warranty coverage but you should always
be sure these are equivalent to the quality of theoriginal Hyundai parts. Your Service Passport

o Whenever you have your Hyundai serviced,
keep copies of the service records in your
glovebox. This will help ensure that you candocument that the required procedures have
been performed to keep your warranties ineffect. This is especially important when
service is not performed by an authorizedHyundai dealer.
o If you choose to do your own maintenance and repairs, you may find it helpful to havean official Hyundai Shop Manual. A copy of
this publication may be purchased at yourHyundai dealer's parts department.

DRIVING YOUR HYUNDAI 2- 3
C050A01A-AAT
STARTING (For Multiport Fuel Injection)
Normal starting with either a cold or warm
engine is obtained without pumping or depress- ing the accelerator pedal. Simply turn the key to
the "START" position and release when the
engine starts.
After the engine has started, allow the engine to
run for 10 to 20 seconds prior to placing thevehicle in gear.
The starter should not be operated for more
than 15 seconds at a time. Wait 15-30 secondsbetween starting attempts to protect the starterfrom overheating.
WARNING:Never run the engine in a closed or poorly
ventilated area any longer than is needed tomove your car in or out of the area. Thecarbon monoxide gas emitted is odorlessand can cause serious injury or death. C050B02X-GAT
Normal Conditions:
The Starting Procedure:
1. Insert key, and fasten the seat belt.
2. Depress the clutch pedal fully (manual transaxle) and place the gearshift lever in neutral (manual transaxle) or the selectorlever (automatic transaxle) in "P" (park)position.
3. After turning the ignition key to the "ON" position, make certain all warning lights andgauges are functioning properly before start-
ing the engine.
WARNING: Be sure that the clutch is fully depressed
when starting a manual transaxle vehicle. Otherwise, there is the potential to cause
damage to the vehicle or injury to someoneinside or outside the vehicle as a result ofthe forward or backward movement of the
vehicle that will occur if the clutch is notdepressed when the vehicle is started.
4. Turn the ignition key to the "Start" position and release it when the engine starts. DC090C1-E
FUEL ECONOMY
The following suggestions are made to assist in
achieving the greatest degree of fuel economy.
o Maintaining a constant check on fuel con- sumption will enable the most economical use pattern and driving style to be adopted.
o Avoid using the vehicle for very short jour- neys if possible, particularly when a coldstart is involved.
o Ensure that tyre pressures are maintained at the correct level.
o Use only the recommended grade of fuel.
o Avoid carrying unnecessary weight, and if a roof rack is in use, remove it as soon aspossible after use.
o Anticipate the road and conditions ahead to enable adjustments in speed to be madesmoothly. Avoid heavy acceleration andsharp braking.
o Avoid cruising at unnecessary high speeds.
o Always ensure that the periodic maintenance services are performed by a Hyundai dealer at the time and/or mileage intervals speci-fied.
o Use the air conditioner only when neces- sary.

NOTE: The inspection and testing of certain elec-
tronic fuel injection/engine management and automatic transmission control systems re-quire specialised electronic equipment spe-cifically designed for Hyundai vehicles. Theuse of general purpose electrical test equip-ment may result in damage to the controlunit microprocessors. be sure these are equivalent to the quality ofthe original Hyundai parts. Your Service Pass-port provides further information about yourwarranty coverage.
DF020F1-E SERVICE HISTORYIt is important that all scheduled maintenance
services are recorded in the warranty and ser- vice passport to ensure that proof of mainte-nance is available when warranty service isrequired.
DF020A1-E MAINTENANCE AND SERVICING REQUIREMENTS To ensure the continued reliability and safety of
the vehicle, certain routine maintenance opera-tions are required at specific mileage or timeintervals.
It is the responsibility of the vehicle owner to
ensure that the maintenance schedules shownin both this Owners Manual and the Warrantyand Service Passport are adhered to.
The new vehicle warranty may be invalidated if
the routine maintenance operations are notperformed in line with the recommendationsoutlined and the safety and durability of thevehicle adversely affected.
It is recommended that all maintenance opera-
tions with the exception of the daily operatingchecks are entrusted to a Hyundai dealer toensure that the latest repair and maintenanceprocedures and specialized servicing tools areemployed. In addition, the use of genuineHyundai replacement parts will ensure that thevehicle safety and performance will not becompromised. ZF010A1-A
