B900A01A-GAT ACOUSTIC WARNING SOUND (If installed) The acoustic warning chime sounds when the tail lights are on and the door in driver side isopen. This prevents the battery from dischargingwhen the car is left with the tail lights on. Thechime sounds until the tail lights are turned off.

Malfunction Indicator Light (If installed)
This light illuminates when there is a malfunction of an exhaust gas related component, and thesystem is not functioning properly so that theexhaust gas regulation values are not satisfied.This light will also illuminate when the ignition keyis turned to the "ON" position, and will go out in afew seconds. If it illuminates while driving, ordoes not illuminate when the ignition key isturned to the "ON" position, take your car to yournearest authorized Hyundai dealer and have thesystem checked.

B290A02A-AAT ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE WARNING: Never remove the radiator cap when the en-gine is hot. The engine coolant is under pres-sure and could erupt and cause severe burns.Wait until the engine is cool before removingthe radiator cap. The needle on the engine coolant temperature gauge should stay in the normal range. If itmoves across the dial to "H" (Hot), pull over andstop as soon as possible and turn off the engine.Then open the hood and check the coolant leveland the water pump drive belt. If you suspectcooling system trouble, have your cooling sys-tem checked by Hyundai dealer as soon aspossible.

B560A01X-AAT REMOTE FUEL-FILLER LID RELEASE (If installed)
The fuel-filler lid may be opened from inside the vehicle by pulling up on the fuel-filler lid openerlocated on the front floor area on the left side ofthe car. NOTE: If the fuel-filler lid will not open because icehas formed around it, tap lightly or push onthe lid to break the ice and release the lid. Donot pry on the lid. If necessary, spray around
the lid with an approved de-icer fluid (do notuse radiator anti-freeze) or move the vehicleto a warm place and allow the ice to melt.
To turn on the rear fog lights, push the switch.They will come on when the headlights areturned on.

This is normal and nota cause for concern.Whenever you open the fuel filler cap, turn itslowly.

o Engine oil and filter The engine oil and filter should be changed at
the intervals specified in the maintenance sched- ule. If the car is being driven in severe condi-tions, more frequent oil and filter changes arerequired.

o Drive belts
Inspect all drive belts for evidence of cuts,
cracks, excessive wear or oil and replace ifnecessary. Drive belts should be checked pe-
riodically for proper tension and adjusted asnecessary.

o Fuel filter
A clogged filter can limit the speed at which the
vehicle may be driven, damage the emissionsystem and cause hard starting. If an exces-sive amount of foreign matter accumulates inthe fuel tank, the filter may require replacementmore frequently.
After installing a new filter, run the engine for
several minutes, and check for leaks at theconnections. F060D01A-GAT
o Fuel lines, fuel hoses and connec-
tions
Check the fuel lines, fuel hoses and connec-
tions for leakage and damage. Replace anydamaged or leaking parts immediately. Inspect the hose routing to assure that the
hoses do not come in contact with any heatsource, sharp edges or moving component
which might cause heat damage or mechanicalwear. Inspect all hose connections, such as
clamps and couplings, to make sure they aresecure, and that no leaks are present. Hoses
should be replaced immediately if there is any
evidence of deterioration or damage.

o Air cleaner filter
A Genuine Hyundai air cleaner filter is recom-
mended when filter is replaced.

o Spark plugs
Make sure to install new spark plugs of the
correct heat range.

o Timing belt Inspect all parts related to the timing belt for
damage and deformation. Replace any dam-aged parts immediately.

inspected at those intervals specified in themaintenance schedule. Make sure that a newvapor hose or fuel filler cap is correctly re-placed.

Inspect the surface of hoses for evidence of
heat and/or mechanical damage. Hard and brit-tle rubber, cracking, tears, cuts, abrasions, and
excessive swelling indicate deterioration. Par-ticular attention should be paid to examinethose hose surfaces nearest to high heat sourc-es, such as the exhaust manifold. F060N01X-GAT
o Valve clearances Incorrect valve clearance will not only result in
unsteady engine operation, but will also causeexcessive noise and reduced engine perfor-
mance. Inspect valve clearance and adjust asrequired while the engine is hot.

4. Turn the radiator cap counterclockwise with-out pressing down on it, until it stops. This relieves any pressure remaining in the cool-ing system. And remove the radiator cap bypushing down and turning counterclockwise. Now fill the radiator with clean demineral- ized or distilled water. Continue to add cleandemineralized or distilled water in small quan-tities until the fluid level stays up in theradiator neck.SSA6060A

REPLACING THE SPARK PLUGS
The spark plugs should be changed at the
intervals specified in the vehicle maintenance schedule in Section 5 or whenever engine per-formance indicates they should be changed.Symptoms that suggest poor spark plug perfor-mance include engine misfiring under load, lossof fuel economy, poor acceleration, etc. Whenspark plugs are replaced, always use sparkplugs recommended by Hyundai. The use ofother spark plugs can result in loss of perfor-mance, radio interference or engine damage.
NOTE: When replacing the spark plug, always use
the genuine parts recommended.

5. Start the engine, top off the radiator with water and then add engine coolant to the reservoir until the level is between "LOW"and "FULL".
6. Replace the radiator and reservoir caps and check to be sure the drain cocks are fullyclosed and not leaking.
WARNING: The cooling fan is controlled by engine cool-
ant temperature and may sometimes oper- ate even when the engine is not running.Use extreme caution when working near theblades of the cooling fan so that you are notinjured by a rotating fan blade. As the en-gine coolant temperature decreases, the fanwill automatically shut off. This is a normalcondition.

HEADLIGHT BULB
Replacement instructions:
1. Allow the bulb to cool. Wear eye protection.
2. Always grasp the bulb by its base, avoid touching the glass.
3. Disconnect the connector, then remove the dust cover.
4. Push the bulb spring for removing the head- light bulb.
5. Remove the headlight bulb. If the bulb is burned out, replace it with the same watt- age.
6. Installation is the reverse order of the re- moval.
7. Use the protective cap and carton to promptly dispose of the old bulb.
8. Check for proper headlight aim. WARNING: The halogen bulb contains gas under pres-
sure and if impacted could shatter, and re- sulting in flying fragments. Always wear eye
protection when servicing the bulb. Protectthe bulb against abrasions or scratches andagainst liquids when lighted. Turn the bulbon only when installed in a headlight. Re-place the headlight if damaged or cracked.
Keep the bulb out of the reach of childrenand dispose of the used bulb with care. G290A02X-GAT HEADLIGHT AIMING ADJUSTMENT Before performing aiming adjustment, make sure of the following.
1. Keep all tires inflated to the correct pres- sure.
2. Place the vehicle on level ground and press the front bumper & rear bumper down sev- eral times. Place the vehicle at a distance of3,000 mm (118 in.) from the test wall.
3. See that the vehicle is unloaded (except for full levels of coolant, engine oil and fuel, andspare tire, jack, and tools). Have the driveror equivalent weight placed in driver's seat.
Recommended Fluid
Use PSF-3 type fluid. NOTE: Do not start the engine when the power
steering oil reservoir is empty.

POWER STEERING HOSES
It is suggested that you check the power steer-
ing hose connections for fluid leakage at those intervals specified in the vehicle maintenanceschedule in Section 5.
The power steering hoses should be replaced if
there is severe surface cracking, pulling, scuff-ing or worn spots. Deterioration of the hosecould cause premature failure.

REPLACING HEADLIGHT BULBS Before attempting to replace a headlight bulb,
be sure the switch is turned to the "OFF"position.
The next paragraph shows how to reach head-
light bulbs so they may be changed. Be sure toreplace the burned-out bulb with one of thesame number and wattage rating.
CAUTION: Keep the lamps out of contact with petro-
leum product, such as oil, gasoline, etc.

EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM (If Installed)
Your Hyundai is equipped with an emission
control system to meet all requirements of the Emission prohibition rules of your province. There are three emission control systems which
are as follows.
1) Crankcase emission control system
2) Evaporative emission control system
3) Exhaust emission control system In order to assure the proper function of the
emission control systems, it is recommended that you have your car inspected and main-tained by an authorized Hyundai dealer in ac-cordance with the maintenance schedule in thismanual. the crankcase through the air intake hose.Inside the crankcase, the fresh air mixes withblow-by gases, which then pass through thePCV valve and into the induction system.

2. Evaporative Emission Control
System (If installed)
The Evaporative Emission Control System is
designed to prevent fuel vapors from escapinginto the atmosphere. Canister
While the engine is inoperative, fuel vapors
generated inside the fuel tank are absorbed and stored in the onboard canister. When the en-gine is running, the fuel vapors absorbed in thecanister are drawn into the induction systemthrough
the purge control solenoid valve.
Purge Control Solenoid Valve The purge control solenoid valve is controlled
by the ECM; when the engine coolant temper-ature is low, and during idling, it closes, so thatevaporated fuel is not taken into the engine.After engine warm-up, during ordinary driving, itopens so as to introduce evaporated fuel to theengine.
