CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEM
Children riding in the vehicle should
sit in the rear seat and must always
be properly restrained to minimize
the risk of injury in an accident, sud-
den stop or sudden maneuver.
According to accident statistics, chil-
dren are safer when properly
restrained in the rear seats than in
the front seat. Larger children not in
a child restraint should use one of
the seat belts provided.
You should be aware of the specific
requirements in your state. Child
and/or infant safety seats must be
properly placed and installed in the
rear seat. You must use a commercial-
ly available child restraint system that
meets the requirements of the Federal
Motor Vehicle Safety Standards
(FMVSS).
Child restraint systems are designed
to be secured in vehicle seats by lap
belts or the lap belt portion of a
lap/shoulder belt, or by a LATCH sys-
tem. Children could be injured or killed in
a crash if their restraints are not
properly secured. For small children
and babies, a child seat or infant seat
must be used.
Before buying a particular child
restraint system, make sure it fits your
car seat, seat belts and your child.
Follow all the instructions provided
by the manufacturer when installing
the child restraint system.
When the child restraint system is
not in use, store it in the luggage
area or fasten it with a seat belt so
that it will not be thrown forward in
case of a sudden stop or an acci-
dent.
WARNING - Restraint
location
Never install a child or infant
seat on the front passenger's
seat. A child riding in the front
passenger seat can be forceful-
ly struck by an inflating airbag
and severely injured or killed.
WARNING - Hot child
restraint
A child restraint system can
become very hot if it is left in a
closed vehicle on a sunny day.
Be sure to check the seat cover,
buckles and latches before
placing a child in the restraint
system.

Noise and smoke
When the air bags inflate, they make
a loud noise and they leave smoke
and powder in the air inside of the
vehicle. This is normal and is a result
of the ignition of the air bag inflator.
After the air bag inflates, you may
feel substantial discomfort in breath-
ing due to the contact of your chest
with both the seat belt and the air
bag, as well as from breathing the
smoke and powder. Open your
doors and/or windows as soon as
possible after impact in order to
reduce discomfort and prevent
prolonged exposure to the smoke
and powder.
Though the smoke and powder are
non-toxic, they may cause irritation
to the skin (eyes, nose and throat,
etc). If this is the case, wash and
rinse with cold water immediately
and consult a doctor if the symptom
persists.
Never install a child restraint in the front passenger seat.
Never place a rear-facing child
restraint in the front passenger’s
seat. If the air bag deploys, it could
impact the rear-facing child restraint,
causing serious or fatal injury.
In addition, do not place front-facing
child restraints in the front passen-
ger’s seat either. If the front passen-
ger air bag inflates, it could cause
serious or fatal injuries to the child.

WARNING - Hot
components
Do not touch the air bag storage
area's internal components
immediately after airbag infla-
tion. The air bag related parts in
the steering wheel, instrument
panel and the roof rails above
the front and rear doors are
very hot. Hot components can
result in burn injuries.

Condition and operation in the front passenger occupant classifica-
tion system
*1) The system judges a person of adult size as an adult. When a smaller adult sits in the front passenger seat, the system may recognize him/her
as a child depending on his/her physique and posture.
*2) Do not allow children to ride in the front passenger seat. When a larger child who has outgrown a child restraint system sits in the front passen-
ger seat, the system may recognize him/her as an adult depending on
his/her physique or posture.
*3) Never install a child restraint system on the front passenger seat.
WARNING - OCS system
Riding in an improper position
adversely affects the occupant
classification system (OCS) and
may result in the deactivation of
front passenger airbag. It is
important for the driver to
instruct the passenger as to the
proper seating instructions as
contained in this manual. (Continued)

When an adult is seated in the front
passenger seat, if the PASSENGER
AIR BAG “OFF” indicator is on,
change the ignition switch to the OFF
position and ask the passenger to sit
properly (sitting upright with the seat
back in an upright position, centered
on the seat cushion with their seat
belt on, legs comfortably extended
and their feet on the floor). Restart
the engine and have the person
remain in that position. This will allow
the system to detect the person and
to enable the passenger air bag. If the PASSENGER AIR BAG “OFF”
indicator is still on, ask the passen-
ger to move to the rear seat.
✽ ✽
NOTICE
The PASSENGER AIR BAG “OFF”
indicator illuminates for about 4 sec-
onds after the ignition switch is
changed to the ON position or after
the engine is started. If the front
passenger seat is occupied, the occu-
pant classification sensor will then
classify the front passenger after
several more seconds.

WARNING - AIR BAG
"OFF" light
Do not allow an adult passenger
to ride in the front seat when the
PASSENGER AIR BAG “OFF”
indicator is illuminated,
because the air bag will not
deploy in the event of a crash.
The driver must instruct the
passenger to reposition himself
in the seat. Failure to properly
position yourself may lead to
airbag deactivation resulting in
airbag non-deployment in a col-
lision. If the PASSENGER AIR
BAG “OFF” indicator remains
illuminated after the passenger
repositions themselves proper-
ly and the vehicle is restarted, it
is recommended the passenger
move to the rear seat because
the passenger's front air bag
will not deploy.

Side impact air bag
Your vehicle is equipped with a side
impact air bag in each front and out-
board rear seat. The purpose of the
air bag is to provide occupants with
additional protection than that
offered by the seat belt alone.
The side impact air bags are
designed to deploy only during cer-
tain side-impact collisions, depend-
ing on the crash severity, angle,
speed and point of impact. The side
air bags are not designed to deploy
in all side impact situations or in all
rollover situations. Side impact
airbags are deployed if the rollover or
the possible rollover event is detect-
ed by ACU (Airbag Control Unit).

Safety features of your vehicle
Side impact air bags are supplemen-
tal to the seat belt systems and are
not a substitute for them. Therefore
your seat belts must be worn at all
times while the vehicle is in operation.
For best protection from the side air
bag system and to avoid being
injured by the deploying side air bag,
all seat occupants should sit in an
upright position with the seat belt
properly fastened.
The driver's hands should be placed
on the steering wheel at the 9:00 and
3:00 positions. The passenger's
arms and hands should be placed on
their laps.If seat or seat cover is damaged, have
the vehicle checked and repaired by
an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
Curtain air bag
Curtain air bags are located along
both sides of the roof rails above the
front and rear doors.
WARNING - Deployment
Do not install any accessories
including seat covers, on the
side or near the side impact air
bag as this may affect the
deployment of the side air bags.
WARNING
Do not place any objects over
the air bag or between the air
bag and yourself. Also, do not
attach any objects around the
area the air bag inflates such as
the door, side door glass, front
and rear pillar.
WARNING - Flying
objects
Do not place any objects (an
umbrella, bag, etc.) between the
door and seat. Such objects
may become dangerous projec-
tiles if the side airbag inflates,
which may result in serious
injuries to the occupants.

crash severity, angle, speed and
impact. The curtain air bags are not
designed to deploy in all side impact
situations or in all rollover situations.
Curtain airbags are deployed if the
rollover or the possible rollover event
is detected by ACU (Airbag Control
Unit).✽ ✽
NOTICE
Never try to open or repair any com-
ponents of the side curtain air bag
system. This should only be done by
an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.WARNING
Do not allow the passengers to
lean their heads or bodies onto
doors, put their arms on the
doors, stretch their arms out of
the window, or place objects
between the doors and passen-
gers when they are seated on
seats equipped with side
impact and/or curtain air bags.
Failure to follow this instruction
could result in injury or death to
vehicle occupants in a crash.
WARNING
Do not hang other objects
such as hangers or hard
objects except clothes. Also,
do not put heavy, sharp or
breakable objects in the
clothes pockets. In an acci-
dent or when the curtain air
bag is inflated, it may cause
vehicle damage or personal
injury.
Do not place any objects over the air bag. Also do not attach
any objects around the area
the air bag inflates such as
the door, side door glass,
front and rear pillar, roof side
rail.
Do not hang hard or breakable objects on the clothes hanger.

Safety features of your vehicle
Just before impact, drivers oftenbrake heavily. Such heavy braking
lowers the front portion of the vehi-
cle causing it to “ride” under a vehi-
cle with a higher ground clearance.
Air bags may not inflate in this
"under-ride" situation because
deceleration forces that are detect-
ed by sensors may be significantly
reduced by such “under-ride” colli-
sions. They are deployed if the rollover or
the possible rollover event is
detected by ACU (Airbag Control
Unit). They are not designed to be
deployed in all rollover situations. Air bags may not inflate if the vehi-
cle collides with objects such as
utility poles or trees, where the
point of impact is concentrated to
one area and the deceleration
forces are significantly reduced.
