C090H01L-GAT NOTE:
o For smooth and safe operation, depress the brake pedal when shifting from "Neutral" position or "Park" position to a forward or reverse gear.
o The ignition key must be in the "ON" position and the brake pedalfully depressed in order to movethe shift lever from the "P" (Park) position to any of the other posi- tions.
o It is always possible to shift from "R", "N", "D" position to "P" po-sition. The vehicle must be fullystopped to avoid transaxle dam- age.
NOTE:
o In sports mode, only the four
forward gears can be selected. To reverse or park the vehicle, move the selector lever to the "R" or "P" position as required.
o In sports mode, downward shifts are made automatically when thevehicle slows down. When the vehicle stops, 1st gear is auto-matically selected.
o To maintain the required levels
of vehicle performance andsafety, the system may not ex- ecute certain gearshifts when the selector lever is operated.
o Before driving away from a stop on a slippery road, push the se-lector lever forward into the +(UP)position. This causes the transaxle to shift into 2nd gear which is better for smooth driv-ing away on a slippery road. Push the selector lever to the -(DOWN) side to shift back to 1st gear.
!
C090I03L-GAT
CAUTION:
o Shift into "R" and "P" position only when the vehicle has com- pletely stopped.
o Do not accelerate the engine in reverse or any of the forwardpositions with the brakes applied.
o Always apply the footbrake when shifting from "P" or "N", to "R","D"position.
o Do not use the "P" (Park) posi- tion in place of the parking brake.Always set the parking brake, shift the transaxle into "P" (Park) position and turn off the ignition when you leave the vehicle, evenmomentarily. Never leave the ve- hicle unattended while the en- gine is running.
o When accelerating from a stop on a steep hill, the vehicle may havea tendency to roll backwards. Shift-ing the shift lever into 2nd gear while in sport mode will help pre- vent the vehicle from rolling back-wards.

12EFFECTIVE BRAKING
SC140A2-E Braking system performance and fric- tion material life are greatly affected by the driving style adopted. The follow- ing suggestions are made to assist inachieving the best results from the braking system.
o Anticipate the road and conditions ahead in order that heavy braking may be avoided.
o When descending long gradients, use the engine to assist in retardingthe vehicle to minimise the possibil-ity of brake fade occurring.
o When trailer towing, ensure that the
trailer brakes function correctly anduse engine braking to assist the vehicle braking system.
o Use only genuine Hyundai replace- ment brake pads and shoes to en-sure consistent friction characteris- tics and wear rates.
o After driving through deep water (e.g. fording), the brakes may be-come wet and performance reduced.Always check brake efficiency after emerging from the water and dry the brakes by lightly depressing the brakepedal several times whilst driving slowly. o Apply the parking brake only when
the vehicle is at rest.
o Since the power assistance pro- vided by the brake servo is derived from the engine, coasting with theengine turned off or towing of the vehicle with the engine turned off will result in greatly increased pedalpressures being required to stop the vehicle.
o Do not hold the vehicle on an incline with the accelerator pedal. This cancause the transaxle to overheat. Al- ways use the brake pedal or parkingbrake.
o Use caution when parking on a hill.
Engage the parking brake and placethe gear selector lever in "P" (auto- matic transaxle) or in first or reverse gear (manual transaxle). If your caris facing downhill, turn the front wheels into the curb to help keep the car from rolling. If your car is facinguphill, turn the front wheels away from the curb to help keep the car from rolling. If there is no curb or if it is required by other conditions to keep the car from rolling, block the wheels.
o Check the automatic transaxle fluid
level regularly, and add fluid asnecessary. See the maintenance schedule for the proper fluid recommendation.

WARNING:
ABS will not prevent accidents due to improper or dangerous driving manoeuvres. Even though vehiclecontrol is improved during emer- gency braking, always maintain a safe distance between you and ob-jects ahead. Vehicle speeds should always be reduced during extreme road conditions. The braking distance for cars equipped with an anti-lock braking system may be longer than for thosewithout it in the following road con- ditions. These roads should be driven at reduced speeds.
o Rough, gravel or snow-covered roads.
o With tyre chains installed.
o On roads where the road surface
is pitted or has different surface height.!The safety features of an ABS equipped vehicle should not be tested by high speed driving or cornering. This could endanger the safety ofyourself or others.
ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS)
C120A03A-EAT (Not all models) The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) is designed to prevent wheel lock-up during sudden braking or on hazard- ous road surfaces. The ABS controlmodule monitors the wheel speed and controls the pressure applied to each brake. Thus, in emergency situationsor on slick roads, ABS will increase vehicle control during braking. NOTE:
o A click sound may be heard in the
engine compartment when the ve- hicle begins to move after the en-gine is started. These conditions are normal and indicate that the anti-lock brake system (ElectronicStability Program) is functioning properly.
o During ABS operation, a slight
pulsation may be felt in the brakepedal when the brakes are ap- plied. Also, a noise may be heardin the engine compartment while braking. These conditions are normal and indicate that the anti-lock brake system is functioning properly.

!
CAUTION:
Driving with varying tire or wheel size may cause the ESP system to malfunction. When replacing tires, make sure they are the same size as your original tires.!
C310A01JM-AAT ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM (ESP)(If Installed) The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system is an electronic system de-signed to help the driver maintain ve- hicle control under adverse conditions. It is not a substitute for safe drivingpractices. Factors including speed, road conditions and driver steering input can all affect whether ESP will be effectivein preventing a loss of control. It is still your responsibility to drive and corner at reasonable speeds and to leave asufficient margin of safety.
HGK3033-E
The Electronic Stability Program (ESP)system is designed to stabilize the vehicle during cornering maneuvers. ESP checks where you are steeringand where the vehicle is actually going. ESP applies the brakes at individual wheels and intervenes in the enginemanagement system to stabilize the vehicle. WARNING:
Electronic stability program is a driv-ing aid; all normal precautions for driving in inclement weather and onslippery road surfaces should be observed.

o Don't "ride" the brake or clutch pedal. This can increase fuel consumption and also increase wear on these components. In addition, driving with your foot resting on the brake pedalmay cause the brakes to overheat, which reduces their effectiveness and may lead to more serious con-sequences.
o Take care of your tires. Keep them
inflated to the recommended pres-sure. Incorrect inflation, either too much or too little, results in unnec- essary tire wear. Check the tire pres-sures at least once a month.
o Be sure that the wheels are aligned
correctly. Improper alignment canresult from hitting curbs or driving too fast over irregular surfaces. Poor alignment causes faster tire wearand may also result in other prob- lems as well as greater fuel con- sumption.
o Keep your car in good condition. For better fuel economy and reducedmaintenance costs, maintain yourcar in accordance with the mainte- nance schedule in Section 5. If you drive your car in severe conditions, more frequent maintenance is re-quired (see Section 5 for details).
o Keep your car clean. For maximum service, your car should be keptclean and free of corrosive materi-als. It is especially important that mud, dirt, ice, etc. not be allowed to accumulate on the underside of thecar. This extra weight can result in increased fuel consumption and also contribute to corrosion.
o Travel lightly. Don't carry unneces- sary weight in your car. Weight is anenemy of good fuel economy.
o Don't let the engine idle longer than necessary. If you are waiting (andnot in traffic), turn off your engineand restart only when you're ready to go.
o Remember, your car does not re- quire extended warm-up. As soonas the engine is running smoothly, you can drive away. In very coldweather, however, give your engine a slightly longer warm-up period. o Don't "lug" or "over-rev" the engine.
Lugging is driving too slowly in too high a gear resulting in the engine bucking. If this happens to you, shift to a lower gear.Over-revving is racing the engine
beyond its safe limit. This can be avoided by shifting at the recom-mended speeds.
o Use your air conditioning sparingly.
The air conditioning system is
operated by the engine power so your fuel economy is reduced when you use it.

19TRAILER OR VEHICLE TOWING
YC200A1-E If you are considering towing with your car, you should first check with your Local Laws to determine their legal requirements.Since laws vary from county to county, the requirements for towing trailers, cars, or other types of vehicles orapparatus may differ. Ask your Hyundai authorised repairer for further details before towing.
CAUTION:
Do not do any towing with your carduring its first 1,000 miles in order toallow the engine to have properly run-in. Failure to heed this caution may result in serious engine ortransaxle damage.
! YC200C3-A Trailer Brakes If your trailer is equipped with a braking system, make sure it conforms to localregulations and that it is properly in- stalled and operating correctly. NOTE: If you tow a trailer or vehicle, your car will require more frequent main- tenance due to the additional load.See Maintenance Under Severe Usage Conditions" on page 5-6.
YC200B2-E Trailer Hitches Select the proper towbar and ball com- bination, making sure that its location is compatible with that of the trailer or vehicle being towed.Use a quality non-equalizing hitch which distributes the nose weight uniformly throughout the chassis. The towbar should be bolted securely to the car and installed by a qualifiedtechnician.

7. The vehicle/trailer combination is
more affected by crosswind and buffeting. When being passed by a large ve- hicle, keep a constant speed andsteer straight ahead. If there is too much wind buffeting, slow down to get out of the other vehicle's airturbulence.
8. When parking your car and trailer,
especially on a hill, be sure to followall the normal precautions. Turn your front wheels into the curb, set the parking brake firmly, and putthe transaxle in 1st or Reverse (manual) or Park (automatic). In addition, we advise the use of wheelchocks at each of the trailer's tires.
9. If the trailer has electric brakes,
start your vehicle and trailer mov-ing, and then apply the trailer brake controller by hand to be sure the brakes are working. This lets youcheck your electrical connection at the same time.
10.During your trip, check occasion- ally to be sure that the load issecure, and that the lights and any trailer brakes are still working.
YC200E1-E Trailer or Vehicle Towing Tips
1. Before towing, check towbar ball
and safety cable connections as well as proper operation of the trailer running lights, brake lights, and turn signals.
2. Always drive your vehicle at a mod- erate speed (Less than 60mph).
3. Trailer towing requires more fuel than normal conditions.
4. To maintain engine braking effi-
ciency, do not tow a trailer with thetransaxle engaged in an overdrive gear.
5. Always secure items in the trailer to prevent load shift while driving.
6. Check the condition and air pres-
sure of all tires on the trailer and your car. Low tire pressure can seriously affect the handling. Also check the spare tire.

11. Avoid jerky starts, sudden accel- eration or sudden stops.
12.Avoid sharp turns and rapid lane changes.
13.Avoid holding the brake pedal down
too long or too frequently. This could cause the brakes to overheat, re- sulting in reduced braking efficiency.
14.When going down a hill, shift into a lower gear and use the engine brak-ing effect. When ascending a long grade, downshift the transaxle to a lower gear and reduce speed to reducechances of engine overloading and/ or overheating.
15.If you have to stop while going uphill, do not hold the vehicle inplace by pressing on the accelera- tor. This can cause the automatictransaxle to overheat. Use the park- ing brake or footbrake.
NOTE: When towing check transaxle fluid more frequently. CAUTION:
If overheating should occur whentowing, (temperature gauge readsnear red zone), taking the following action may reduce or eliminate the problem.
1. Turn off the air conditioner.
2. Reduce highway speed.
3. Select a lower gear when going uphill.
4. While in stop and go traffic, place the gear selection in park or neu- tral and idle the engine at a higher speed.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY
13
HGK4018
D080D03A-EAT Emergency Towing For emergency towing when no com- mercial tow vehicle is available, attach a tow cable, chain or strap to one of the towing hooks under the front/rear ofyour car. Do not attempt to tow your vehicle in this manner on any unpaved surface. This could result in seriousdamage to your car. Nor should towing be attempted if the wheels, drive train, axles, steering orbrakes are damaged. Before towing, be sure the transaxle is in neutral and the key is in "ACC" (with the engine off)or in the "ON" position (with the engine running). A driver must be in the towed car to steer it and operate the brakes. Front
Rear
!CAUTION:
o If the car is being towed with all four wheels on the ground, it can be towed only from the front. Be sure that the transaxle is in neu-tral. Do not tow at speeds greater than 30 mph (50 km/h) and for more than 15 miles (25 km).
o Be sure the steering is unlocked by placing the key in the "ACC"position.
IF YOU LOSE YOUR KEYS
D120A01A-GAT If you lose your keys, many Hyundai dealers can make you a new key if you have your key number. If you lock the keys inside your car and you cannotobtain a new key, many Hyundai deal- ers can use special tools to open the door for you. Information about the keyof immobilizer system (If Installed) will be found on page 1-4.

To Check the Transaxle Fluid Level Park the car on level ground with the
parking brake engaged. When the transaxle fluid level is checked, the transaxle fluid should be at normal operating temperature and the en-gine idling.
Whilst the engine is idling, apply the
brakes and move the gear selectorlever from "P" to each of its other positions — "R", "N", "D" — and then return to "N" or "P". With the enginestill idling:
Recommended Lubricant
Use only Hyundai Genuine ATF SP- III, DIAMOND ATF SP-III, SK ATF SP-III or other brands approved byHyundai Motor Co., Damage caused by a nonspecified fluid is not covered by your new vehicle limited warranty.
Transaxle Fluid Capacity The fluid capacity of the automatic transaxle is 7.8 litres.
WARNING:
The transaxle fluid level should be checked when the engine is at normal operating temperature. This means that the engine, radiator, exhaust system etc., are very hot so you should exercise great care not to burn yourself during thisprocedure. 1. Open the bonnet, being careful to
keep hands and clothing clear ofany moving parts.
2. Remove the transaxle dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert the dipstick as far as it will go, then remove it again. Now check the fluid level on thedipstick. It should be in the "HOT" range on the dipstick.
