To Check the Oil Level
Before checking the oil, warm up the engine to the normal operating tem-perature and be sure it is parked on level ground. Turn the engine off. Wait five minutes, then remove the dipstick, wipe it off, fully reinsert the dipstick and withdraw it again. Then note the highest level the oil hasreached on the dipstick. It should be between the upper ("F") and lower ("L") range. HGK5004
CHECKING THE ENGINE OIL
G030A02O-GAT Recommended Oil Engine oil is essential to the perfor-
mance and service of the engine. It is suggested that you check the oil levelat least once a week in normal use and more often if you are on a trip or driving in severe conditions.
The engine oil quality should meet
the following classification.
API SJ, SL or ABOVE,ILSAC GF-3 or ABOVE G030B01JM
NOTE:
o For good fuel economy, SAE 5W-20 (5W-30), ILSAC GF-3 en-gine oil is preferred regardless of regional option and engine variation.
o If SAE 5W-20, ILSAC GF-3 en- gine oil is not available, second-ary recommended engine oil forcorresponding temperature range can be used. 1.6L/2.0L

matic) or reverse gear (manual transaxle).
2. Open the hood and remove the engine oil filler cap.
3. Slide underneath the car and loosen the drain plug by turning it counter-clockwise with a wrench of theproper size. Be sure that a drain pan is in position to catch the oil as it drains out, then remove the drainplug.
WARNING:
Be very careful when draining the
engine oil as it may be hot enoughto burn you! 5. Remove the oil filter by turning it
counterclockwise with a oil filterwrench of the proper size. A cer- tain amount of oil will come out when you remove the filter. So besure to have your drain pan in place underneath it.
6. Install a new oil filter in accordance with the instructions on the cartonor on the filter itself. Do not over- tighten. Tightening torque: 1.2 ~ 1.6 kgf.m.
Be sure that the mounting surface on
the engine is clean and that the oldgasket is removed completely. Lubri- cate the new gasket on the filter with clean engine oil before installation.
7. Remove the engine oil level dip- stick.
8. Refill the crankcase with the rec- ommended engine oil. Refer to the specification in chapter 9 for en- gine oil capacity.
4. When the oil has stopped draining,
replace the drain plug using a new gasket and retighten by turning it clockwise. Tightening torque: 4.5 ~ 4.0 kgf.m (1.6/2.0L) 4.5 ~ 3.5 kgf.m (2.7L) CAUTION:
Slowly pour the recommended oilusing by a funnel. Do not overfill not to damage engine.
9. Start the engine and check to be sure no oil is leaking from the drain plug or oil filter.
10.Shut off the engine and recheck the oil level.
NOTE: Always dispose of used engine oil in an environmentally acceptablemanner. It is suggested that it be placed in a sealed container and taken to a service station for maybereclaimation. Do not pour the oil on the ground or put it in with the household trash.

To add brake fluid, first wipe away

Adding Brake Fluid
WARNING:
Handle brake fluid carefully. It can damage your vision if it gets into your eyes. Use only DOT 3 or DOT4 specification fluid from a sealed container. Do not allow the fluid can or reservoir to remain openany longer than required. This will avoid entry of dirt and moisture which can damage the brake sys- tem and cause improper opera- tion. The clutch fluid level in the mastercylinder should be checked when performing other under hood services. The system should be checked forleakage at the same time. Check to make certain that the clutch fluid level is always between the "MAX" and"MIN" level markings on the fluid res- ervoir. Fill as required. Fluid loss indi- cates a leak in the clutch systemwhich should be inspected and re- paired immediately. Consult your Hyundai dealer.

To Check the Fluid Level
The fluid level in the brake fluid reser-voir should be checked periodically.The level should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the side of the reservoir. If the level is at or below the"MIN" mark, carefully add fluid to bring it up to "MAX". Do not overfill.

Responsibilty For Maintenance
It is the responsibility of the vehicle owner/driver to ensure that all routine mainte- nance services are undertaken in line with the recommendations specified in Section 5 of this manual. In addition, in order to ensure continued validity of the new vehiclewarranty and safe operation of the vehicle, non scheduled maintenance/running repairs should be undertaken at the earliest available opportunity. Under severe operating conditions, more frequent maintenance is required. Detailsof the maintenance schedule for such conditions are also given in section 5. tensioner seat belt assemblies, and failure to heed the warnings to not strike, modify, inspect, re-place, service or repair the pre- tensioner seat belt assemblies may lead to improper operationor inadvertent activation and se- rious injury.
o Always wear seat belts when driv- ing or riding in a motor vehicle.
SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT (AIRBAG) SYSTEM (SRS)
B240A01GK-GAT (Not all models) Your Hyundai is equipped with a Supplemental Restraint (Airbag) Sys- tem. The indications of the system'spresence are the letters "SRS AIR BAG" embossed on the ornament in the steering wheel and the passenger'sside front panel pad above the glove box. The Hyundai SRS consists of airbags installed under the pad covers in the center of the steering wheel and thepassenger's side front panel above the glove box. The purpose of the SRS is to provide the vehicle's driver and/orthe front passenger with additional pro- Driver's Airbag

o Pre-tensioners are designed to operate only one time. After acti- vation, pre-tensioner seat belts must be replaced. All seat belts, of any type, should always bereplaced after they have been worn during a collision.
o The pre-tensioner seat belt as- sembly mechanisms become hotduring activation. Do not touch the pre-tensioner seat belt as-semblies for several minutes af- ter they have been activated.
o Do not attempt to inspect or re- place the pre-tensioner seat beltsyourself. This must be done by an authorized Hyundai dealer.
o Do not strike the pre-tensioner seat belt assemblies.
o Do not attempt to service or re- pair the pre-tensioner seat belt system in any manner.

deploy very rapidly to provideprotection in a crash. If an occu- pant is out of position because of not wearing a seat belt, theairbag may forcefully contact the occupant causing serious or fa- tal injuries. B240B02GK-EAT SRS Components and Functions The SRS consists of the following com- ponents: - Driver's Side Airbag Module - Passenger's Side Airbag Module - SRS Service Reminder Indicator (SRI)- SRS Control Module (SRSCM) The SRSCM continually monitors all elements while the ignition is "ON" to determine if a frontal or near-frontal impact is severe enough to requireairbag deployment.B240B01L-R
o Do not tamper with or discon-
nect SRS wiring, or other com-ponents of the SRS system. Do-ing so could result in injury, due to accidental firing of the airbags or by rendering the SRS inopera-tive.
o Do not install a child restraint
system in the front passengerseat position. A child restraint system must never be placed in the front seat. The infant or childcould be severely injured or killed by an airbag deployment in case of an accident.
o Do not allow children to ride in the front passenger seat. If olderchildren (teenages and older)must ride in the front seat, make sure they are always properly belted and that the seat is movedback as far as possible.
o For maximum safety protection
in all types of crashes, all occu-pants including the driver should always wear their seat belts whether or not an airbag is alsoprovided at their seating posi-

The SRS service reminder indicator (SRI) on the instrument panel will comeon for approximately 6 seconds after the ignition key is turned to the "ON" position or after the engine is started,after which the SRI should go out. The airbag modules are located both in the centre of the steering wheel and in the front passenger's panel above the glove box. When the SRSCM detects aconsiderable impact to the front of the vehicle, it will automatically deploy the airbags. B240B02L-R Passenger's Airbag
Upon deployment, tear seams moldeddirectly into the pad covers will sepa-rate under pressure from the expan- sion of the airbags. Further opening of the covers then allows full inflation ofthe airbags. A fully inflated airbag in combination with a properly worn seat belt slows the driver's or the passenger's forward motion, thus reducing the risk of headand chest injury. After complete inflation, the airbag immediately starts deflating, enabling the driver to maintain forward visibility. B240B03L-R

Do not install or place any accesso- ries (drink holder, cassette holder, sticker, etc) on the front passenger'spanel above the glove box in the vehicle with passenger's side air bag. Such objects may becomedangerous projectiles and cause injury if the passenger's side air bag inflates.
